SelectaPlay Announces PC and Console Publishing Deal for Morkull Ragast’s Rage

Channel your inner God of Death and Darkness in Disaster Games’ 2D action platformer

Barcelona, Spain – 4th September 2023. Publisher SelectaPlay is excited to announce a new publishing deal with developer Disaster Games for the 2D action platformer Morkull Ragast’s Rage. SelectaPlay will be responsible for the global digital publishing of Morkull Ragast’s Rage on PC via Steam, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 in 2024.

Morkull Ragast’s Rage is a 2D video game that combines platforming and action with a touch of exploration in which you control Morkull, God of death and darkness and lord of the Ragast. Morkull’s gameplay mechanics lie in breaking the fourth wall, which allows Morkull to communicate with the player in some exciting ways.

Watch the announcement trailer for Morkull Ragast’s Rage here

SelectaPlay is also thrilled to announce that Morkull Ragast’s Rage will be amongst the playable games exhibiting for the first time at the Indie Dev Day in Barcelona from 8th – 10th September in Barcelona, Spain. SelectaPlay will be hosting six new titles at the event and Morkull Ragast’s Rage joins the already announced first-person psychological horror narrative experience Luto, the addictive puzzle game Bubble Ghost Remake and Inner Ashes, the first-person narrative adventure game. Two more exciting titles will be announced this week and will join this stellar lineup.

Get ready to play as Morkull, the villain of this story, who knows that he is a character in a video game, the existence of a player who controls him (that is, you) and of some developers who have created him (that is, us).

Your objective? Help Morkull escape from the Ragast so he can rule and carry out his evil plans around the world. Yep, that’s right. your typical cliché villain….

  • Art and animation – Morkull Ragast ‘s Rage is completely hand-drawn and animated frame by frame. Inspired and influenced by traditional animated films and other two-dimensional video games. This traditional animation endows the entire cast of characters with great naturalness and life within.
  • Break out of the fourth wall – What makes the game special is Morkull himself, his personality and character along with that fourth wall break that allows him to talk to players as if he were right there. We have endowed Morkull with great charisma and personality, constantly generating a lighthearted atmosphere, loaded with constant humour, bad jokes and pop culture references.
  • Combat system – You’ll have your own hands and all the power that comes with being the God of Death and Darkness, of course… Plus a wide selection of combos and abilities that will allow you to fight your way through the deepest corners of the Ragast.

Morkull Ragast’s Rage will be digitally published by SelectaPlay in 2024 for PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series and PlayStation 5.

Overview

Beat-em ups are known for a lot of things, but the narrative is usually a second thought in most cases. Dawn of the Monsters, the excellent Kaiju-based brawler landed last year to high praise, but some had an itch for a more stream lined experience. 13am Games have delivered a huge value in their new “Arcade Edition + Character DLC Pack”, adding in the titled additions, which should add some new replay value into the beloved title. How does it measure up? Lets find out.

Content

Before we tackle the actual gameplay additions, I want to speak a moment on Meteor Temujin, as he is the new mech to control and is quite the addition all around. This Sentai inspired robot has several attacks. One is a mighty hammer that can deal a great deal to enemies, as well as a sword, and a swooping axe. With this comes new ultimate attacks and a fresh variety that most should enjoy, becoming a welcome addition to the mix. Other characters have also been shown a lot of love, with over 50 skins applied for the now five characters within the game. Yes, its a very impressive pack, and one that adds a lot of value on its own.

The Arcade mode is absolutely the sweet spot of this DLC. Players now can go through the game’s 11 stages in a new format where the objective is survival, where a losing player is sent back to the start. Avoid damage, survive, and fight forward to win, with leaderboards available for bragging rights. The mode is split into two sections, with “Rogue” and “Classic Mode”, allowing for the player to get randomly generated or preset power-ups, which of course come with their own difficulties and perks. The whole experience is addictive and a lot more “pick and play” themed, making for something one can go into again and again as they make attempts for completion or simply score accrual. This DLC also has new ending illustrations, and a lot of unlockable content – adding a new layer to the experience as a whole.

Final Thoughts

Dawn of the Monsters now feels more complete than ever with a fantastic and low-priced DLC pack that is sure to add a ton of bang for the buck for any kaiju fan. The new mech is fantastic, but the mode is simply devine, giving us new reasons to jump in and out of the modern classic with a ton of replay value added. Sure, it may not be an entirely new experience as a whole, but do not sleep on adding this little pack to your base game, as it certainly is one of the best add-ons for a console title this year.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon Review

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon

Developer: FromSoftware
Publisher: Bandai Namco
Platforms: Xbox Series XXbox OnePlayStation 4PlayStation 5PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 25 August 2023
Price: $59.99 USD – Available Here $109.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

When it comes to certain genres, mech games are in a peculiar spot. If we would round them all up, there’s a big number of them, but only a few rise to the top. There’s no middle ground, either they’re instantly forgettable after a few days of release or they make quite a name for themselves.

As for the Armored Core series, the “most recent” release was Armored Core: Verdict Day in 2013, and after that, we were left with a big gap. So far, there have been 15 games in the series, including spin-offs, and reboots, but there are a few specific things that can wrap this series around. One of them is the steep difficulty curve as well as high difficulty in general and Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is no stranger to that.

Story

On the frontier planet of Rubicon 3, a substance called Coral was discovered that could be used as both an energy source and a data conduit. Coral was hailed as the key to humanity’s technological advancement, but instead, it caused a cataclysmic event known as the Fires of Ibis, which engulfed the planet and the surrounding star system in flames and left behind a lethal contaminant. All Coral in existence was thought to have been consumed by the disaster.

Fifty years later, however, signs of Coral are once again detected on Rubicon 3. Corporations flock to exploit the planet and control the Coral and mercenaries follow to profit from the conflict. You are an augmented human labeled as “C4-621” and you work as an Armored Core pilot on the promise of earning a new life by taking on mercenary jobs. After illegally landing on Rubicon 3, you steal the license of a deceased mercenary and assume their callsign: “Raven”.

Gameplay

After a first mission disguised as a bare-bones tutorial and a boss (that I like to call “The Great Filter™”), you’re thrown into the rest of the following missions on your own. There are some levels where you are helped by an AI partner here or there, but don’t get used to it. After the first few levels, a part shop and arena are opened and that’s where the real fun starts. One of the staples of the Armored Core series is the insane customization for your mech when it comes to parts and weapons. Whenever you’re stuck on a certain boss the solution is often to try a different build.

The mission will often have standard objectives such as protect x, eliminate all enemies, investigate such and such, and there are some where your only goal is to kill a certain boss. The combat is hectic (as you might expect) and consists of high stakes dance made out of dodging, flying, missile spamming, and close combat with energy swords. And if you like to explore every nook and cranny, this game has got you covered. Some levels will contain secret weapons that you cannot buy anywhere and they’re often unique such as a chainsaw or a flamethrower and some will contain unique mech parts.

There is also something called a “loghunt” which opens up later in the game. In almost every level there will be a hidden or not-so-well-hidden enemy that you have to take down in order to progress on the loghunt. Every loghunt level will reward you with either a new mech part or a weapon.

Visuals

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon uses the same engine as Elden Ring but here it is pushed to its absolute limits. It’s way more polished, smoother, responsive, and optimized to heaven and back. Understandably, a lot of the detailing went into mechs and not so much on the background objects but that’s perfectly fine, it’s not like you often have the time to stop and look at the buildings as you’re missile blasted from every possible angle. Notable mention goes to some bosses’ designs that are equally intimidating in the intro cutscenes and even more once they start blasting at you.

Audio

Considering that you’ll be stuck on some bosses more than you’d like, the developers put a lot more care when it comes to the soundtrack. For the most part, the music is pretty tame and predictable until you get to the boss(es). It’s just a matter of time until some tracks will stick with you such as Balteus’ theme or “Rough and Decent” – also known as Cinder Carla’s theme. Another remarkable thing is the refined sound design when it comes to weapons, which is pretty impressive once you realize just how big the arsenal of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is. After a while, you’ll learn to recognize from afar just by sound alone if the enemy is using plasma or explosive weapons.

Overall

To sum it up, Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is almost a perfect game and it’s not without its flaws. There is one puzzling stealth where it feels like it doesn’t belong in the game at all and until you memorize the placement and path of every enemy (so you can effectively sneak by) it’s nothing but an infuriating slog to get through. Another thing is that certain bosses are near impossible unless you have a very specific build for them and the game never hints or tells you that – it’s up to you to experiment blindly. For example, one late-game boss is extremely fast and does nothing else but spam missiles at you but it’s highly susceptible to stagger + melee. Any other approach to fight it will simply not work.

Regardless of that, when it comes to the atmosphere, weapon arsenal, combat, and fluidity, I have a feeling that Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon will sit on the throne for quite some time. Or at least until the next game in the series is out (just don’t make us wait a decade for the sequel again).
