Release Date: 21 Sep 2023

Overview

Did you know that PAYDAY 2 is my second most-played game on Steam? Clocking it to nearly 500 hours, I’ve been with it since the release. And I would be the first to admit that it was far from a perfect game. Bad matchmaking, broken stealth, terrible AI on lower difficulties, and so on. But damn, it is fun clearing out a bank with four perfectly synced random players. For all of its flaws, the core gameplay was always beyond amazing. So imagine my excitement when I heard that the sequel is around the corner, with a new story, new heisters, and most importantly – a new game engine!

Story

Several years after the crew’s reign of terror over Washington DC has ended, the crew assembles once again to deal with the threat that roused them out of early retirement. Apparently, someone is after them, and the questions are why and what they want. In order to identify and crush this new threat, the Crew is leaving their Washington DC roots behind them and moving to New York City.

A new location will bring with it new challenges, but also new opportunities for a heister with a plan. And that’s pretty much most of the story we might get for now. Remember that it took almost a decade for the PAYDAY 2 story to be wrapped up with ongoing new heists and updates so I can only say at this point to….stay tuned?

Gameplay

Okay, so I start the game and what do I see? Some lackluster menus and 99% of weapons are locked behind the player level. No big deal, I can still work with that (after all, PAYDAY 2 wasn’t in any better shape on release). But wait, what is this………challenges as the only way to level up infamy, always online, lack of detailed numbers for weapon stats, no safe house, no bot customization, and most importantly of all – no preplanning!

Okay, now I’m seriously mad. And if I were any more upset, this is honestly where I would stop the review. Why? Because it took me more than 3 days to even get into a heist or two (by the way, why do I have to matchmake when I want to play with bots only, makes no sense). Another thing is that the player damage now is beyond pathetic. Even on the lowest difficulty, the only way to quickly dispose of cops is to score a headshot, and for anywhere else on their body it’s going to take you 5-6 bullets on average.

Honestly, playing PAYDAY 3 feels like they forgot ten years of updates that PAYDAY 2 went through. I just don’t understand why every single thing has to be locked behind level or something else. It is so incredibly demotivating seeing a bunch of weapons with only 1 or 2 unlocked, like the game is saying “You like what you see? Well, better get used to playing the game & its challenges in a very specific way that the developers intended if you want to unlock more”.

Visuals

So far, the only thing that makes me feel a bit better about this game is the visual overhaul that came with selecting Unreal Engine 4 instead of the previous Diesel game engine that had noticeable limits in visuals. Now we have better weapon models, better-looking NPCs, better environments, and better enemy design (special shoutout goes to the new Dozer, Cloaker, and Zapper). Overall, the levels now look brighter and with better lighting.

Audio

Upon hearing that Simon Viklund won’t be returning for PAYDAY 3, I was heartbroken. Can’t tell you just how many times I would restart heists on purpose just hoping to get Razormind on shuffle. In any case, after spending some time in this game, I can confirm now that the new artist Gustavo Coutinho is only a suitable replacement, but his tracks give a fresh breath of air for PAYDAY 3. Just try to get “No Rest For The Wicked” out of your head after you finish the heist, it’s near impossible.

Overall

I’d say I somewhat like what this game can be but not the game itself as of right now. It is the version of PAYDAY 3 that I would have expected in 2015. The new engine is good and the heists are interesting as well. However, I really have no patience for waiting for a couple of years (at least!) before this game evolves into an acceptable state. Put this in a cryo sleep and wake me up when I won’t have to spend 5 to 6 minutes queueing for a game before finally being kicked out to a main menu.

New Management Structure of Sony Interactive Entertainment

0

Sony Group Corporation and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) today announced that SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan has made the decision to retire in March 2024 after almost thirty years with the PlayStation business. To support Mr. Ryan in his transition, Sony Group Corporation President, COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki will assume the role of Chairman of SIE effective October 2023. Effective April 1, 2024, Mr. Totoki will be appointed Interim CEO of SIE while he continues his current role at Sony Group Corporation. Mr. Totoki will work closely with Sony Group Corporation Chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida and the management team of SIE to help define the next chapter of PlayStation’s future, including the succession of the SIE CEO role.

Jim Ryan joined Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Europe-based legal entity, Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE) — which was then Sony Computer Entertainment Europe — in 1994. Since then, he has held a number of senior positions at the company including President of SIEE, Head of Global Sales and Marketing at SIE and Deputy President of SIE since January 2018, before being appointed SIE President and CEO.

Comment from Kenichiro Yoshida:

“Jim Ryan has been an inspirational leader throughout his entire period with us, but never more so than in overseeing the launch of PlayStation 5 in the midst of the global COVID pandemic. That extraordinary achievement made by the entire SIE team has been steadily built on and PlayStation 5 is on track to become SIE’s most successful console yet. I’m immensely grateful to Jim for all his achievements. Respecting Jim’s decision to finish his long career at Sony leaves me with an important decision regarding his succession given the significance of the Game & Network Services business. We have discussed intensively and have determined the new management structure. We aim to achieve Sony Group’s further evolution and growth through bringing even greater success to the Game & Network Services Business.”

Comment from Jim Ryan:

“After 30 years, I have made the decision to retire from SIE in March 2024. I’ve relished the opportunity to have a job I love in a very special company, working with great people and incredible partners. But I’ve found it increasingly difficult to reconcile living in Europe and working in North America. I will leave having been privileged to work on products that have touched millions of lives across the world; PlayStation will always be part of my life, and I feel more optimistic than ever about the future of SIE. I want to thank Yoshida-san for placing so much trust in me and being an incredibly sensitive and supportive leader.”

Comment from Hiroki Totoki:

“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Jim Ryan for his outstanding achievements and contributions over his 30-year career at Sony, including the great success of launching the PlayStation 5. The PlayStation business managed by SIE is an essential part of Sony Group’s entire business portfolio. I will work with Jim and the senior management team closely to ensure our continued success and further growth. I am also looking forward to creating the exciting future of PlayStation and the game industry together with everyone at SIE and its business partners.”

Silent Hope Review

Silent Hope

Developer: Marvelous Inc.
Publisher: XSEED Games, Marvelous Inc.
Platform: Nintendo Switch, PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 3 October, 2023
Price: $49.99 USD, $59.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

Silent Hope is a 3D anime-style dungeon-crawler, where players control a team of seven different heroes, all with different affinities and weapons. The heroes work at the behest of a Princess who seeks the King, hiding in a deep abyss after cursing his people. Silent Hope follows a familiar formula of seeking answers to narrative mysteries while conquering a lengthy and difficult string of dungeon levels, but does it follow through on all its promises?

Story

The story behind Silent Hope is intriguing from the jump, even with the minimal details players are provided. A kingdom has fallen, with its ruler suddenly turning malicious and stealing the voices of his people (hence the name of the game). Thereafter, he descended into the depths of the Abyss, a cesspool of monsters and evil. You control a party of seven heroes. They all operate at the will of the Princess, who is trapped inside a crystal teardrop, and whose wishes can only be heard by her now voiceless subjects. She wants answers as to why her father cursed her people, and guides the party through the Abyss.

From the beginning, the game promises answers to lore and all the mysteries it proposes. Unfortunately, story beats take incredibly long to occur, with new dialogue from the Princess only unlocking after completing around half a dungeon level. Cutscenes are few and far between, with the majority of the game being running through the Abyss, hoping to find a checkpoint. A lot of the excitement about unraveling the mystery of the story is lost in the grinding and leveling that comprises the main chunk of the game.

Gameplay

Silent Hope is defined by its gameplay, requiring hours and hours of grinding characters and equipment to be strong enough to defeat bosses and continue through the story. The dungeon-crawling mechanic is the main source of gameplay. Your character jumps into the Abyss at the start of every round, and attempts to gain experience, collect materials, and progress to the next floor. When players encounter a Princess Tear, they are given the opportunity to switch to another character, or return to base camp.

Unfortunately, it seemed some characters were designed better than others – making it difficult to want to play as all seven and level them equally. I found myself wanting to stick to the same two or three characters throughout the game, but it was difficult to progress through levels without making use of the entire party – you cannot heal or revive characters unless you return above ground, so your only option is to switch to someone else. And if you don’t have options for properly leveled characters, you’ll die almost immediately.

The base camp area has numerous stations/tents where you can craft weapons, meals for combat buffs in the Abyss, and materials for new equipment and food. The production of most materials are locked until you return to the Abyss a given number of times, which encourages further exploration. However, crafting quickly feels mundane and thoughtless, with limited options for what to craft until later in the game, and limited interaction outside of clicking the same buttons over and over.

Like with most games of a similar style, playing Silent Hope can feel repetitive and mindless. If focusing on leveling and upgrading through in-game grinding is fun to you, you’ll likely be able to lose yourself in this game and enjoy it for a bit. But even as someone that tends to enjoy that, I found myself bored and wanting more rather quickly.

Visuals

Silent Hope uses a 3D anime art-style. The playable characters are all chibi style, with many of the enemies and bosses appearing in a similar style. The visuals of the game are very colorful and simple. At times, the environment feels stagnant. The majority of the characters are not very expressive and outside of some cutscenes, the visuals of the game aren’t particularly impressive or eye-catching.

Audio

The soundtrack of Silent Hope is of a whimsical RPG vibe, and predictable without standouts.

Regarding the voiceover work for the game, the Princess is the only character who speaks and serves as a narrator. The voice acting for the Princess is good, but as she’s the only voice you hear throughout the game, the quality of the voice acting becomes meaningless compared to how annoying hearing the same lines over and over can be.

Overall

Silent Hope is an interesting experience and could be fun to a specific type of player-base. The colorful anime-style animation makes the game light-hearted and cute, while the required dedication to crafting and grinding can make the game feel like a drag. A lot of these elements seem to counteract each other at times, and I found myself wanting a lot more from the game narratively, character-wise, and especially in terms of its gameplay. At its price point, I hoped for more, making me think this game may not be worth it, unless you are drawn in by the premise or gameplay genre.
