GOG Preservation Program brings the big box nostalgia

• Star Trek: 25th Anniversary • Armikrog • Big Box Collection • Printable Big Boxes •

September 8th, 2026, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Armikrog are the two newest additions to the GOG Preservation Program. They’re joined by three games already maintained by the program — Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, and Myst — all five of which are part of this wave together — and this time, we’re preserving more than just the code.

Here’s what’s new: every one of these five games now comes with an interactive 3D scan of its real, physical box art. We had the actual boxes scanned — front, back, spine, the works — and turned into rotatable 3D models you can download after purchase and open right in the 3D viewer that’s already built into Windows and Mac. No extra software, no plugins. Just spin the box around on your screen like you’re holding it.

And if you’d rather hold the real thing, we’ve got you covered there too. In collaboration with Big Box Collection — a one-person passion project that’s been turning real game boxes into 3D scans since 2015 — we’re delivering flat, printable versions of the same box art, so you can cut, fold, and glue your own physical big box at home. A proper papercraft project for anyone who misses shelves full of PC game boxes. If you want to know more about this amazing project, take a look at the exclusive interview with its creator HERE.

Physical media doesn’t survive the way software can — boxes get lost, crushed, thrown out. Scanning them, and letting you print your own, is preservation in a different shape: the same mission that keeps these games running on modern PCs, applied to the objects they used to come in.

If no one gives you the choice to own a physical copy, take matters into your own hands — and paired with GOG’s DRM-free installers, no one can ever take the games you paid for away from you.
