Rebuilt From the Ground Up, Knytt Classic Launches Today Free on PC

Experience the unhurried exploration and immaculate 2000s vibes of Nifflas’ beloved adventure

Maryland, USA – 10 August 2026 – Knytt Classic, the fully rebuilt version of the classic indie platformer by Niklas “Nifflas” Nygren and remade from the ground up by Chasm and WOLFHOUND developer Bit Kid, sets off on adventure today on PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam. True to the original freeware classic by Nifflas, who later released Knytt Stories and Knytt Underground, and is currently working on Rhythm Doggo, Knytt Classic is available for free.

Originally released in 2006 as a freeware title to millions of downloads and critical acclaim, Knytt Classic is a faithful rebuild of the original game, preserving the original while adding compatibility for modern hardware. Take up new challenges by earning new achievements, and push the Knytt to his limits in special difficulty modes created by Bit Kid and Baba is You creator Hempuli. Through it all, soak in the vibes of Nifflas’ original atmospheric soundtrack.

The Knytt – a small and scrambly creature – has been kidnapped by an alien and whisked away from his homeworld, but is marooned on a distant planet when the alien’s UFO is struck by an asteroid and crashes. Guide the Knytt as he sets out to find the scattered components of the ship and hopefully make his way home.

Explore an imaginative and colorful open world by leaping, climbing, and occasionally plummeting down through the planet’s many layers. Discover villages built in the clouds and massive industrial facilities deep underground. Meet a fanciful and memorable cast of characters, all of whom make up the unique fabric of a world like no other.

Knytt was hugely influential on my path as a game developer, so it’s been incredibly rewarding to take tools I made for my games and use them on a modern version,” said James Petruzzi, founder and lead developer of Bit Kid. “Nifflas is a super cool guy, too, so this project has been a very joyful and almost meditative experience for me – it sounds weird, but making this has helped me relax, and I hope it’ll have the same effect on players.”

Knytt Classic is available for free on PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam. For more information, follow Nifflas on Bluesky, Bit Kid on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and join the official Bit Kid Discord server.
