Hertfordshire, 12th March 2026 – KOEI TECMO Europe and developer Team NINJA dare all fans of Japanese horror to step into Minakami Village with the worldwide release of FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, now available on PlayStation®5, Nintendo Switch™ 2, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC via Steam®. To celebrate, a haunting trailer has been released, highlighting the work done on the remake of this beloved title.
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is a full remake of the second game in the FATAL FRAME (Project Zero) series which was originally released in 2003 for PlayStation®2 as FATAL FRAME/Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly and is one of the most acclaimed games in the series.The title has undergone a complete overhaul to offer a haunting experience, thanks to enhanced graphics and sound. The graphical enhancements offer a higher level of detail with refined textures, striking lighting and shadow contrast, while the sound has been revamped to offer spatial audio that will immerse players deep into the action, offering a more haunting and realistic experience than ever before.
In the title, players follow twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they venture into a mysterious village, guided by a crimson butterfly. In Minakami Village, a place of unending night, Mio is separated from her sister and must search for her in order to escape, armed only with the Camera Obscura—a device that can capture the impossible and seal away wraiths that haunt the dark.
The Camera Obscura, a signature feature of the FATAL FRAME franchise, has been reworked to offer a more intense and rich experience during combat and exploration. Not only will players still be able to attack wraiths by taking photos, but they will also have access to new features such as focus, zoom and filters, as well as new Special Shots to help them inflict significant damage and repel spirits.
As fans delve deeper into the mystery of the haunted village, they will explore new locations such as the Umbral Mound and the candlelit hall of Eikado Temple, while also being able to discover more about the lore of Crimson Butterfly thanks to the brand-new ending featuring the song “Utsushie”, composed by Tsuki Amano, along with new side stories.
Among the new features, players can now hold Mayu’s hand, bringing the sisters closer than ever while restoring both Health and Spirit Power. Fans can also collect and equip Charms to gain various effects, and purify the Twin Dolls scattered throughout Minakami Village by photographing them, earning points that can be exchanged for items.
For players wishing to discover the beginning of the game before seeking to uncover the truth, a free demo of FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is available on all platforms. Players will venture into an abandoned house, guided by a crimson butterfly, where they will engage in terrifying encounters with wraiths, armed with the newly upgraded Camera Obscura. Fans can now purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes the base game, the Digital Soundtrack and Digital Art Book, as well as the Digital Deluxe Bonus Set featuring the Deluxe Charm and costumes for Mio and Mayu*. A Digital Deluxe Upgrade is also available separately. Players who purchase a physical or digital version of the game before 25th March 2026 will receive the following early purchase bonuses: Wraith Charm, Peony Hair Ornament (Red)/Peony Hair Ornament (Blue), and Kimono (Red)/Kimono (Black).
