In a somewhat surprising turn, Kazutaka Kodaka, creator of Danganronpa and the recent The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy-, is already gearing up for his next title. Alongside his team at Too Kyo Games and in collaboration with publisher Spike Chunsoft, Kodaka has officially unveiled Shuten Order following a mysterious teaser earlier this year. Shuten Order is set to launch worldwide on September 5 for Nintendo Switch and PC and is described as a “multi-genre adventure” that blends five completely different gameplay systems, including stealth-horror, visual novel storytelling, and a romance-tinged detective game. In typical Kodaka fashion, it’s weird, wild, and full of potential.
The game takes place in a world teetering on the brink of destruction. A fanatical religious group known as the Shuten Order has established its own nation, only for its founder to be mysteriously murdered. By a divine miracle, he returns from the dead—but with no memory of his past and only four days left to live. Now known as Rei Shimobe, and guided by two self-proclaimed angels, the resurrected prophet must uncover the identity of his killer to achieve full resurrection. The suspects? Five ministers within the Shuten regime. Depending on who you accuse, both the story and the gameplay branch into five dramatically different paths, each with its own unique mechanics.
The creative minds behind Shuten Order (Pre-order here) include Kazutaka Kodaka, Takumi Nakazawa, and Takekuni Kitayama, with music once again composed by Masafumi Takada, known for his iconic work on Danganronpa and No More Heroes.
