Satirical tabletop game “Terrible Influence” heads to Pax Unplugged 6-8th December

WatchMojo and acclaimed comedy writer Mark Cope introduce darkly humorous boardgame

Montreal, Canada – 4 Dec. 2024 – Terrible Influence’s edgy themes around pop culture and politics were inspired by the combined experience of WatchMojo’s Founder and CEO Ashkan Karbasfrooshan and acclaimed creator Mark Cope (The Most Popular Girls in School, Dr. Havoc’s Diary). The first public demo will be made available for play at PAX Unplugged 2024 Friday, 6 Dec.-Sunday, 8 Dec., at Forever Stoked’s booth #3709 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The game will launch on Kickstarter early 2025.

As one of the most successful media brands ever built on YouTube, WatchMojo and its numerous owned-and-operated channel brands serve over 45 million subscribers on YouTube alone. Having navigated the complex worlds of social media, YouTube, and Hollywood, their unique POV became the perfect foundation for Cope to craft the absurd and often cynical commentary that is found throughout the game.

Role-play and develop your own super-star personas, drawing in (possibly deranged) fans and as much wealth as possible while triggering juicy scandals only the best PR team could sweep under the rug. Survive Leaked DMs, Internet Trolls, and other Cancel cards with ease… because in this game, just like in life, with enough money and power, anyone can achieve massive fame without any consequences!

Rise through the levels of influence as a funny as hell podcaster, a vlogger who actually has talent, or a brilliant at marketing reality TV star, among other starting classes. Kickstart your character’s careers from scratch and watch them flourish (or flounder)under the microscope of the totally merciful public eye and against scandals, cancels, and the spite of other players.

Gain valuable skill cards like Incredibly Good Looking OR Great Personality — however you can’t use both of those in the game, because let’s be honest, no one on earth has both. Role-play and act out lucrative scenarios like sponsor ads or acceptance speeches to secure more money and help you climb to the top of power.

In the end, the players use all the fans and money they’ve accumulated throughout the game to become president! Because after all… it doesn’t matter what horrible deeds you did along the way. In this game, if you have enough fame and money, you get to do what you want, be what you want, and the rest of us just get to hate you for it.

“The game is a comedic and frankly cynical journey through our modern society, where players try to earn as much money and fame as possible in order to win the game and become President” said Mark Cope, Creator and Lead designer of Terrible Influence. “The real humor comes from the wild bonuses and absurd scandals throughout the game, and if I’m honest, those are pulled more from real life than satire.”

ANTONBLAST Smashes the Devil with a Giant Hammer Today on PC

Nintendo Switch version set to arrive at later date

MIAMI BEACH, Florida – Dec. 3, 2024 – ANTONBLAST, the fast-paced explosive action platformer all about destruction from developer Summitsphere and publisher Joystick Ventures,  launches today on PC via Steam, with the Nintendo Switch version aiming to release by the end of the year.

The time has come to knock Satan down a peg or two. He’s seeing red – literally and figuratively – because Dynamite Anton is the one being on Earth redder than him. So the Devil Himself swindles Anton’s entire collection of Spirits, which means Anton can’t relax and kick it at Happy Hour. At least not until he’s recovered his prized collection piece by piece across 12 sprawling levels.

Take control of Anton, his Mighty F’n Hammer, and his unstoppable rage. Guide them through a strikingly stylish world alongside Anton’s mace-wielding coworker and fellow playable character Annie, and Brulo, the former owner of Boiler City’s only casino (where Anton is officially banned). Fling Anton through the air with increasingly devastating combos and master the Way of the Hammer to finally catch Satan and punch him in his awful dumb face.

Smash through destructible environments with a dynamic animation system that takes inspiration from 32-bit 2D games amped up to a new extreme. Battle gigantic bosses and discover the many secrets hidden in each level. Play for completionism’s sake at your own pace, or find the optimal routes for speedruns because while smashing the devil is fun…smashing the devil at world record pace is even more fun.

ANTONBLAST is about embracing the chaos and finding a flow – at least, as much as a furious, red-faced man with a beard and a giant hammer can,” says Tony Grayson, creator of ANTONBLAST and the Fearless Leader of Summitsphere. “Our team took to heart that a game about smashing the devil with a hammer should look and feel damn good, and we hope you agree.”

ANTONBLAST is now available on PC via Steam for $19.99, with the Nintendo Switch version arriving soon. Keep up with the latest from Summitsphere on their official website, and follow the studio on X/Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. Join the red-faced conversation on the official Discord server, and be sure to check out Joystick Ventures’ official website and follow them on X/Twitter.

Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven Review

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven

Developer: Square Enix, xeen inc.
Publisher: Square Enix
Platforms: Windows (Reviewed), PlayStation 5, Switch
Release Date: 25 October 2024
Price: $49.99 USD / $74.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

The Romancing SaGa series is well-known for its open-ended progression, intricate RPG mechanics, and minimalist storylines featuring multiple protagonists.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a remake of one of the most beloved entries in the series, featuring modernized visuals, streamlined gameplay, and customizable accessibility options.

Back on the PlayStation 2, I dabbled in Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song. The series has always intrigued me, and I fell in love with Minstrel Song’s vibrant art style and diverse cast. However, with so many RPGs competing for my attention, I set it aside. Now, with this fresh iteration of Romancing SaGa 2, I’m ready to dive into the franchise for real.

Story

Legends speak of seven heroes who save the day whenever evil arises. Over time, these heroes faded from people’s collective memory as peace and prosperity endured for generations. But now, the land is again under siege by an army of fiends, and the people clamor for the return of the legendary heroes. However, their reappearance may not bring the salvation everyone hopes for. With the guidance of a mysterious seeress, the Emperor of Avalon and his retinue embark on a quest to reclaim the land and uncover the truth behind the seven former heroes.

New and expanded story beats add depth to the world and its characters. Devices scattered throughout the game provide brief flashbacks that shed new light on the events surrounding the seven heroes’ past.

Dialogues and cutscenes are sparse, which works in the game’s favor by avoiding excessive exposition. However, the remake could have benefited from expanding a few key story elements to give more context and impact to pivotal moments. The game’s robust RPG systems further enhance the story, allowing for multiple outcomes and encouraging players to fill in the gaps themselves.

Gameplay

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is an engaging RPG. Its open-ended gameplay offers players considerable freedom in how they approach quests and in what order.

The game offers numerous mechanics to tinker with from the get go. There are a variety of character classes to choose from, with even more becoming available as players complete quests. Dialogue choices can also play a significant role in shaping the outcome of events, potentially unlocking new quests, characters, and abilities while foregoing others.

Character classes have fixed basic attributes, but the game’s growth system is tied to weapon proficiency through repeated use. That means that despite some limitations regarding acquiring skills, your scrawny mage can also become a skilled warrior if you so choose. This peculiar system – among others – makes customizing your retinue one of the game’s highlights. It helps that the frequent turn-based battles are fast-paced and challenging.

Exploring towns often lack significant depth – There’s not much to do besides soaking in the atmosphere. Occasionally, villagers will provide useful hints or clues, but they don’t add much beyond that. In dungeons, light platforming segments enhance the exploration experience, making it more engaging compared to the original game.

Three difficulty levels are available, with hard mode reflecting the original game’s difficulty. Personally, I found this setting the most fitting, as the game is designed for players to learn from failure, experiment, and adapt to overcome challenges. It’s a rewarding approach that encourages mastery rather than simply powering through – I found myself actively looking to engage in battles instead of dreading the next encounter with enemies.

Visuals

The transition from the original 2D environments to 3D is a success, with the new visuals adding depth and immersion. That means bigger areas to explore and nice vistas to see. The graphics don’t feature any technically impressive effects, and a few textures need some work.

Regardless, the art direction is solid, featuring vivid and colorful landscapes. The characters and monsters are beautifully rendered. The visuals resemble xeen’s previous work in Trials of Mana

Audio

A revamped soundtrack with new compositions and extensions to existing music would have gone a long way in enhancing the experience. After some time, I could barely listen to the same repetitive tunes used for villages, dungeons, and battles.

On the other hand, the voice acting stands out, particularly during the flashbacks with the seven heroes.

Overall

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is proof that an old-school RPG can feel fresh even decades later. The new visuals exude charm. Customizing your party and experimenting with strategies is a blast, and the fast-paced battles keep you on your toes. That said, the soundtrack could use some variety. All in all, it’s a perfect game for hardcore RPG enthusiasts.
