Sink Your Teeth Into SWAPMEAT: Totally Normal Third-Person Shooter Debuts New Trailer on IGN, Launches Super Size PC Playtest from Dec. 16 to 23

Composer of Acclaimed Scores to Journey, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, ABZU, and Others to Score SWAPMEAT

SEATTLE – Dec. 16, 2024 – SWAPMEAT, a co-op third-person shooter where you swap body parts with the alien weirdos you fight to steal their abilities, today debuted a brand-new trailer on IGN and kicked off its ‘Super Size Meat Lab’ playtest. Developers One More Game also announced that acclaimed composer Austin Wintory will be writing the game’s soundtrack.

Players can sign up to experience the game’s delightfully squishy – and surprisingly deep! – meat swapping gameplay mechanic at playSWAPMEAT.com, and if they invite three friends, their whole squad gets in. The trailer, introduces the outlandish SWAPMEAT universe, where players take on the role of a Meat Scientist for multi-galactic corporation Rangus Meats. They’re tasked with raiding the weirdest worlds in the cosmos, engaging in combat with the unfriendly locals, and harvesting their DNA samples (and the planets’ meat cores, of course). While planetside, players loot body parts that drop from vanquished enemies, appending a wide variety of heads, legs and torsos to their own bodies, gaining game-changing abilities.

“We set out to make the finest sci-fi comedy body horror co-op roguelite third-person shooter with a nostalgic 90s fast food aesthetic the world’s ever seen,” said Jamie Stormbreaker, SWAPMEAT game director and cofounder of One More Game. “With all of those keywords, we’re also super good at SEO.”

“Once I took a half second’s glance at SWAPMEAT I had to be in,” said Austin Wintory, composer of the game’s soundtrack. “Too few games afford the opportunity for something both musically interesting, but also weird and funny! It’s the sort of game which affords something genuinely experimental and anyone who knows me knows I can’t get too much of that!”

The Super Size Meat Lab playtest runs from December 16th at 11 AM PST through December 23rd at 11 AM PST. Players who refer three friends will guarantee access for their entire squad (while supplies last). New to this playtest since the game’s previous run in September:

  • Improved art and animation, including the exceptionally juicy depiction of swapping body parts featuring ‘SmartMeat’ tendrils that reach out and grab your newly acquired bits
  • New, dramatically different worlds to explore and conquer, including a planet made of mechanical meat and a crater-pocked planetoid with towering structures evocative of of coral reefs
  • SWAPMEAT’s first boss fight: Frank’N’Beans, an abhorrent amalgamation of baked beans and hot dogs that open their teeth-filled mouths (?) to shoot you with lasers (??)
  • Hunters: very normal big bads that spawn in to really ruin your day if you press your luck too long on a run

About One More Game

Founded by developers behind genre-defining franchises like Warcraft, Diablo, League of Legends and Guild Wars, One More Game is on a mission to help players have more fun. Started in 2019 by Patrick Wyatt and Jamie Stormbreaker, the Seattle-based (but fully remote) studio believes that involving players early in the development process is paramount to creating ground-breaking games. One More Game is currently developing SWAPMEAT, a roguelite third-person shooter where you raid the weirdest worlds and angriest aliens in the universe…for their meat. The title won the ‘Creative Overkill’ award at the 2024 devcom Indie Awards. To learn more, visit www.onemoregame.com.

FANTASIAN Neo Dimension Review

FANTASIAN Neo Dimension

Developer: Mistwalker Corporation
Publisher: Square Enix
Platforms: Windows (Reviewed), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Switch
Release Date: 6 December 2024
Price: $49.99 USD / $74.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

FANTASIAN is a JRPG crafted by industry legends Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu. Originally released as an Apple Arcade exclusive in 2021, this game stands as a heartfelt homage to Squaresoft’s era Final Fantasy titles. From its story and gameplay to its music and visuals, FANTASIAN feels like a deliberate celebration of the duo’s legacy. The game is now available for a slew of systems as FANTASIAN Neo Dimension. This new version brings substantial performance improvements and interesting additions.

Story

The game’s narrative is steeped in familiar tropes, evoking memories of classic Final Fantasy titles. The protagonist, Leo, wakes up in a mysterious world with amnesia. From there, the story unfolds as a blend of melodrama, hero’s journey, and existential musings.

While the overall plot is predictable, it’s sprinkled with moments of beauty. Some passages, reminiscent of Lost Odyssey’s “Thousand Years of Dreams,” offer poetic and touching insights into the lives of the characters. However, the melodrama can feel excessive at times, and the dialogue occasionally dips into outright cheesiness. Despite that, FANTASIAN’s varied cast and sprawling storyline were engaging enough to keep me playing.

Gameplay

FANTASIAN sticks closely to traditional turn-based combat, with a few twists to keep things fresh. Initially, battles feel overly simplistic with characters lacking significant ability variety.

Thankfully, as the game progresses and new party members join, the combat evolves into something more engaging. Each new character brings unique abilities, adding layers of strategy and breaking the monotony. However, the slow buildup means the first ten hours can feel like a test of patience before the gameplay fully hits its stride.

The standout feature of FANTASIAN’s combat system is the Dimengeon device. This clever mechanic allows players to avoid random battles by “storing” enemies in a separate dimension. Players can choose when to “clean” the device but once a certain threshold is reached, you are forced to face all the stored enemies at once.

The Dimengeon system streamlines exploration and adds layers of strategy to combat. These battles take place on a larger battlefield, allowing players to target multiple enemies simultaneously. Additionally, bonus icons that pop up in the battlefield can be hit for extra turns or increased attack power. Choosing when and how to engage these cumulative battles can significantly make the combat faster and more dynamic.

That said, regular encounters are too frequent and feel repetitive due to limited enemy variety and straightforward strategies. However, some boss battles stand out with unique gimmicks that feel like puzzles to solve, though they can be punishingly difficult due to hard-hitting attacks. Thankfully, an easier difficulty setting has been introduced in Neo Dimension, making it more accessible for players less accustomed to steep difficulty spikes.

The explorable landscapes of FANTASIAN are a visual delight. Moving your characters through these beautifully rendered settings feels like guiding toy soldiers across a miniature world, evoking a sense of nostalgia for JRPGs of yesteryear. Towns bustle with NPCs who bring a sense of life and vibrancy to the game’s world.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the dungeons. They are linear and empty to a fault, with exploration often interrupted by redundant dialogues. Additionally, while character movement is swift, the controls fail to adapt to perspective shifts, leading to a bit of frustration as you navigate through the game’s environments.

Visuals

The decision to use handcrafted dioramas as the basis for the game’s visuals was inspired, and when it works, it’s breathtaking. The attention to detail in these miniature sets is astonishing, and they lend the visuals a tangible, toy-like quality.

However, not all dioramas are created equal. Some suffer from lower resolution or excessive post-processing effects, resulting in blurry visuals that detract from the overall experience. These inconsistencies, while not game-breaking, are noticeable and can pull players out of the otherwise immersive world.

Audio

The music is, as expected, a highlight of the game. Tracks range from sweeping orchestral pieces to intimate melodies, showcasing Uematsu’s versatility. That said, while the soundtrack is undeniably excellent, it doesn’t quite reach the heights of Uematsu’s best works, such as Final Fantasy VI or Final Fantasy IX. While not groundbreaking, the soundtrack beautifully complements the game’s diorama visuals and emotional storytelling. Still, even a “safe” Uematsu score is leagues above most game soundtracks, and it’s a joy to listen to as you wander through the game’s world.

Neo Dimension offers voice-acting for story segments and some NPCs. The Japanese dub is solid; highlighting characters that originally didn’t stand out much while emphasizing the best ones. Another welcome addition is the inclusion of extra battle themes from the Final Fantasy series, which can even be switched mid-battle.

Overall

FANTASIAN Neo Dimension is a love letter to the JRPGs of the past. Its story, gameplay, and music are steeped in nostalgia, evoking a bygone era of gaming while incorporating just enough modern innovations to feel fresh.

However, the narrative’s over reliance on tropes will probably annoy older players at some points. The linearity of dungeons – which lack even basic puzzles – and the game’s overall uneven pacing prevent it from achieving true greatness.

Despite these shortcomings, FANTASIAN Neo Dimension remains a charming and endearing experience, especially for fans of classic JRPGs. Its diorama-based visuals, innovative Dimengeon system, and Uematsu’s music make it a memorable journey, even if it falls short of the classics it aims to emulate.

Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone is going to Kickstarter

Watch the breakdown of gameplay features in the new trailer

December 16th, Gliwice, Poland. Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone is a sequel to Chernobylite, the game created thanks to the very successful  2019 Kickstarter campaign. Released in 2021 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the original Chernobylite finally reached its last development stage by launching on Nintendo Switch a couple of days ago.

Add the game to your Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2075100/Chernobylite_2_Exclusion_Zone/) wishlist to follow the game’s development.

And now we’re here to bring you the next chapter, which is bigger, better, and more bad**s than the first.

It’s a post-apocalyptic action RPG, blending free exploration of a huge, extremely realistic open world with challenging combat, unique crafting, team and base management, and non-linear storytelling.

A few months ago, we released the first teaser and trailer for Chernobylite 2. Once again, we received tons of valuable feedback from Chernobylite players and gamers who haven’t experienced the original game. While the overall reception was very positive, many people felt that something was missing—some feature that made the first part such an enjoyable experience for them.

We’ve listened to your feedback and are here to address that issue. When so many of you, after watching the trailers, expressed concerns that our vision might be heading in a direction that wouldn’t allow you to play the way you truly want, we’re ready to adapt — as we did many times during the Early Access phase of Chernobylite.

Soon, we’ll start a brand new campaign on Kickstarter to join forces together, and if you like to check out what it’s all about, click “Notify me on launch” on our Kickstarter pre-launch page (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thefarm51/chernobylite-2-exclusion-zone-an-open-world-sci-fi-rpg/).

ABOUT CHERNOBYLITE 2: EXCLUSION ZONE

Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone is a post-apo action RPG, mixing free exploration of a huge and extremely realistic open world, challenging combat, unique crafting, and team and base management with non-linear storytelling. You’re a planeswalker who travels through parallel worlds in search of the precious, high-energy material called Chernobylite. Cut off from the world, trapped in the Zone, attacked by hordes of nightmare creatures, you must fight for survival and unite the handful of remaining survivors.

The story told in the game will make you fight to survive in the most dangerous place on Earth. Whether you become the hunted or the hunter depends on how quickly you can evolve, your ability to adapt, and the strategy you follow when exploring the open world of the Chornobyl area. In the daytime, you can see the Zone as an intriguing, exciting, or even beautiful area, but when dusk comes, the absolute terror starts and you have to face it every night.

CHERNOBYLITE 2: EXCLUSION ZONE – MAIN FEATURES

The combat system of Chernobylite 2 is a massive expansion of its predecessor. The introduction of advanced melee weapons fight and crafting system gives more diversity to the character build, strategies, and tactics you can create independently. Don’t forget that if you like to play at the pace of the original Chernobylite, you still can!

About CH757 and Key

CH757 and Key form the creative duo behind Monster DNA. They had previously collaborated together on Fred’s Cereal Company and Billy’s Game Show, both known for their unique, freaky horror style. Monster DNA was born from a simple question: “Where do all those horror game monsters come from?” With a high demand for monsters, they envisioned a company responsible for creating and supplying them. The project began as a 2D game, as creating and merging monsters seemed more possible in that format. However, it eventually evolved into the 3D version known today. The game’s visuals are inspired by Monsters, Inc., That’s Not My Neighbor, and a touch of Rick and Morty, blending dark humor with distinctive freaky monster designs.

New STALCRAFT: X Game Mode Revealed in New Trailer Showcased at The Game Awards

Get ready for the new ‘Operations’ PvE mode coming in 2025.

Indie developer EXBO has revealed the action-packed new game mode for their large-scale MMOFPS STALCRAFT: X in a thrilling new teaser trailer during Thursday’s The Game Awards.

‘Operations’ is a new PvE game mode where teams of three players will venture into the mysterious corners of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in a dungeon-crawling format with various objectives, interesting opponents, complicating modifiers, and mini-bosses.

This will be the game’s first concentrated PvE content, and the developers plan to release it in several stages throughout the year. This is the long-awaited STALCRAFT: X update fans have been waiting for, as currently, most in-game activities are related to PvP modes.

In other news, the EXBO team is launching a major winter event today. During this event, the entire Chernobyl Exclusion Zone will be covered with snow, and thematic activities will take place.

About STALCRAFT: X

Players will spend their time in the open world of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Locations are filled with many kinds of PvP and PvE activities, beloved by fans of Stalker, such as searching for artifacts, mutant hunting, exploration of uncharted locations, doing quests, creating laboratories and participating in faction wars. For those who have less time to play, there are various session modes to experience.

A living open world

The open world of STALCRAFT: X is truly alive, and players create unique situations for each other, forging loyal friendships and relentless enemies along the way. While exploring the game world’s many locations, other factions’ players may shoot you, but you won’t lose all your gear and progress; instead, you’ll only leave part of the resources you’ve collected during that trip. This ensures you retain the thrill of each raid, while setbacks are not overly fatal.

A unigue combination of FPS and RPG

The balance of weapons is not typical for open-world MMOs, and rather resembles session shooters like Counter Strike and Call of Duty. We define the shooter component as fast-paced, tied primarily to reaction and shooting skills. At the same time, you will remain motivated to progress further on as, over the years, the developers have managed to achieve a unique combination of FPS and RPG mechanics.

Progression and open world economy

Don’t let the MMO genre scare you away — there is no levelling mechanic, and you progress through the game by obtaining new equipment. You can aquire it in many ways, including buying it from other players — because STALCRAFT: X has an open economy. You can become a legendary merchant without leaving the base! And by the way, there are no game wipes.

The distribution model

STALCRAFT: X is distributed for free, and there is no catch here — monetization is organized according to the P4T (Pay for time) as well as cosmetics model.

Any items can be obtained through playing the game, however, the soft monetization method allows you to speed up some areas of character levelling.

STALCRAFT: X is available to play for free now via Steam and the EXBO launcher

About EXBO

The history of the company began in 2014, when a small team of modmakers launched its first servers, transforming the fan-inspired idea of an online S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game based on Minecraft. By 2024, STALCRAFT: X has become the most popular online shooter in the post-apocalyptic Chernobyl setting, unique in its blend of MMOFPS features with an open world and economy.
