Kill la Kill Episode 12: Spit Your Sadness Away
Holy to the absolute crap. This episode definitely took one hell of a twisted turn. Alright, so we all knew that Ryuko isn’t the calmest student at Hannouji…but damn. We all knew from last week that she was angry at Nui…but this? This turned it up to eleven, then multiplied it by two.
In short: anger can be dangerous. Not just to those on the receiving end, but those who dole it out. Even if rage is a natural response, it is by no means the correct one. Those who allow themselves to be consumed by their most base emotion may just lose sight of what first drew that feeling out…and when they should stop. Ryuko learned that the hard way. As her fight with Nui took her far beyond her tolerance for hatred, she began to lose herself. Her blood boiled beyond any definition of safe and even Senketsu was unable to keep her in check. Then it happened…
Full. Blown. Monster. Beyond bestial fangs. Horrid, soulless eyes. An asymmetrical body, contorted beyond all possible human thresholds. Her neck was no longer attached to her body, rather it latched on to Sanketsu malformed eye. Not to mention the constant and catastrophic blood loss or the torturous, rasping screams. There really wasn’t much of Ryuko left in there. All that was left was hatred. Cruel, explosive hatred.
A writhing deformation of inconceivable malice
As Ryuko lashed out at all who dared tread near her, Mikisugi and Tsumugu called their plan into action from afar. The bullet. Tsumugu explains that the round possesses a “starching effect” and that whilst it will defeat clothing, the survival of the one wearing said clothes is not guaranteed. As Tsumugu enters the battlefield to try and halt Ryuko, he learns just how terrifying her power is. That being said, the staunch opposer of Life Fibres expressed a hint of sadness when he discovered that Ryuko had lost herself to the Kamui, expecting her will to be stronger than that. Even Mikisugi, for all his bravado, hesitated a number of times when he was about to pull the trigger. Not only that, but the two Nudists also bore witness to the incredible might of Nui Harime and…Satsuki. That’s right, even the illustrious President could not leave Ryuko unchecked. Descending from high she sought to destroy the one who would destroy her school, worse than that, the one who would allow their clothing to take control. It would seem that her indomitable, and slightly off kilter, pride momentarily aligned her with the greater good…it just so happened that it was against Ryuko. Though these incomparable warrior clashed in an unbelievably destructive battle, it was not Satsuki who brought an end to Ryuko’s madness. Rather, it was Mako who found the remaining thread of Ryuko’s humanity and pulled her from her self imposed desolation just in the nick of time. Even Satsuki notes this, telling Mako that Ryuko lived thanks to her efforts. Kind of a nice thing for the tyrant to say.
As is also common with Kill la Kill, we learned a great dell of backstory in yet another flashback…
As if we didn’t know already, Nui Harime is also proven to be an utter psychopath. Worse, an intelligent, manipulative psychopath. That didn’t save her however, from the apparently kickass Dr Matoi. Don’t let his looks fool you, which they will, that guy can fight. Flips, kicks, slashes. He even has a cool Life Fibre lab coat, though it apparently only has the power to retain shape. Still, handy. He was also able to wield his greatest invention: The Rending Scissors. Designed to cut and destroy those pesky little Life Fibres. However, his scientific acumen and skill with a bizarre blade were not enough to save him. Though he did put up one hell of a fight, right to the bitter end. He even managed to rob Nui of her left eye…served her right. However, he was able to hide Senkstsu’s existence from her, a fact which Satsuki believes fuelled her psychological attack on Ryuko. Though she of course denies this.
Before circumstance would tear it asunder
So this week we learned that Mikisugi’s fears are not entirely unfounded, as we were so clearly shown. Even Ryuko’s status as anime protagonist does not protect her from the caustic effects of pure seething hatred. That being said, rather than it being Senketsu who dominated Ryuko as Nudist Beach so frighteningly implied, it was in fact Ryuko who overwhelmed her Kamui and went on a roaring rampage of revenge. Were it not for the timely arrival of everyone’s favourite little oddball, our hero may very well have continued her jaunt through insanity and been dissolved by her own malice.
In a post credits scene we see that Satsuki is overseeing some repairs being made to Hannouji. Though Ryuko, now back to her regular level of anger and combativeness, leaps her and attempts to instigate another fight, Satsuki blocks with her usual grace. She also thanks Ryuko. Due to the data acquired during the Naturals Election, she has perfected her Goku Uniforms, and thus is ready to begin her domination of he West Academies. In one weeks time, Hannouji is going on a battlefield trip…and it won’t be fun. You can count on that.
Ossian Studios – which includes talents such as the developer of Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate and former Bioware producer on Baldur’s Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal (also the CEO) – have released the “Western RPG iOS gamers have been waiting for” in The Shadow Sun.
The universal app can be downloaded here. The Shadow Sun promises to be a 10-15 hour long experience for the mobile platform, within which you can explore over 70 unique areas holding quests that can be completed a myriad of different ways. It also features real-time combat, over 200 items, treasures and hidden secrets, and multiple NPC dialogue options which open up depending on your decisions made up to the relevant encounter. It’s a premium release priced at $8.49, but if it delivers, that price tag might be worth it for potentially the best Western RPG title on the iPhone/iPad.
For fans of the extreme racing genre, 2014 will certainly give you a lot to look forward to. Nordic Games has announced that they have planned to resurrect the best selling MX vs. ATV series.
Nordic Games was able to acquire the rights to the great MX vs. ATV series from an agreement between Nordic Games and THQ. The first game that’ll be released under the MX vs. ATV series will be MX vs. ATV: Supercross. While it will contain new features that will be sure to impress the people who love this game, it will keep most of the features that makes it such a great game. The team will also be maintaining the existing MX vs. ATV series, which includes MX vs. ATV Alive and MX vs. ATV Reflex.
We’ll keep you updated with the latest news on Nordic Games latest endeavor.
Frank Capra’s classic 1946 film, It’s A Wonderful Life is the perfect Christmas treat to celebrate with family and friends at Event Cinemas George St. The special screening on December 19 allowed audience members to travel back in time, to appreciate the importance of life, love and true happiness. There is a reason why It’s A Wonderful Life will continue to live through the years and hold a dear place in the hearts of everyone.
Storyline
Sent from a galaxy far, far away was a Guardian Angel named Clarence (Henry Travers), on a mission to save the young man, George Bailey (James Stewart) from an act of madness in Bedford Falls. Before this time comes, the Almighty narrator tells a gripping story of the rise and compromise of the struggling banker and how he came to wish that he never existed. The most creative and effective aspect of the storyline, is that the narrative progression is intertwined in succession with an alternate universe, Pottersville, in which the protagonist was never born.
The story begins in 1914, with a group of adolescent boys taking advantage of the snow by sliding down the slopes on shovels to cross the ice. On this particular day, George Bailey (age 12) jumps into the icy depths of the pond to save his younger brother, Harry from drowning. A few years later, we see George working as a shop assistant at the drug store, holding the attention of two beautiful girls, Violet and Mary. However, the focal point of this scene is how George deals with the distraught druggist, Mr. Gower (H.B. Warner), who is not coping well with the loss of his son to influenza. When told to make a delivery, George discovers that the druggist used poison in the process of making pills. Unsure of how to deliver the package, George visits his father’s legal firm for advice; instead he interrupts a meeting with the evil and angry, Henry. F. Potter (Lionel Barrymore). The boy returns to Mr. Gower with the package and takes a beating from the man, before he can explain himself and the druggist’s mistake.
The film jumps ahead to 1928, the night George is ready to leave Bedford Falls for a wondrous adventure overseas to Europe. Harry invites his brother to accompany him to celebrate his highschool graduation party, which leads to George’s reunion with Mary Hatch (Donna Reed). This romantic evening changes the course of both these characters’ lives, as they come in contact with an abandoned Granville house and shatter its windows with rocks to make their own wishes come true.
However, tragedy soon looms over the Bailey family and hinders George’s plan of escaping this town to travel around the world and study architecture. Instead, George is enlisted to take over as Executive Secretary in the Bailey Building and Loan Association, with his promise to keep the greedy hands of Mr. Potter away from the money of the good people in Bedford Falls. In contrast, Harry heads to college to study with his brothers saved funds, with the assurance that he will return to replace George in the family business.
After four long years, Harry comes back happily married and ready to take another job offer, more profitable than working in the Bailey Building and Loan Association. Yet again, the protagonist is faced with another inopportunity to move forward in his pursuit of happiness.
Although, George is soon to realise that Mary has also returned from completing college and in the spur of the moment, he walks to her place and lets the woman know what he truly wants and how he feels about her. The newlywed couple find solace together in the old Granville House they rebuild for their future family, but must make financial sacrifices to keep the family business running and out of reach from Mr. Potter to claim ownership.
On Christmas Eve, George is taken aback by another unfortunate circumstance and is forced to request a loan from his nemesis, who refuses to help. At this point of the film, the audience is introduced to the Guardian Angel, Clarence, who arrives just in time to save the desperate and scared man from a terrible crime. The resulting sequence from a regretful wish influences George Bailey to reconsider keeping his own life and re-joining the lives of those he saved; his brother from a near-death experience and Mr. Gower from imprisonment.
Visuals
The original black and white version of the movie, frames the dark and light viewing experience for the audience. From post-war to a time of hope, the title, It’s A Wonderful Life visually portrays the essence of the motion picture. The choice of the film setting reinforces the 1940s era and takes into account the period during WWII, in which Harry receives a Medal of Honour for his bravery as a Navy fighter pilot. The prominent visual aspect was the addition of snow to capture the coming of Christmas and symbolise this time as an important part of It’s A Wonderful Life.
Audio
Director of the musical score, Dimitri Tiomkin (1894-1979) evoked a magical setting in It’s A Wonderful Life through his heartwarming soundtrack, with the City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. The main stars enriched the music with their passionate voices, singing ‘Buffalo Gal (Won’t You Come Out Tonight)’ and joined in the Christmas Carols; ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’ and ‘Auld Lang Syne.’ As the film was made 68yrs ago, the audio quality is not top notch for the loud sound system in a cinema; however that minor flaw is purely circumstantial.
Overall
It’s A Wonderful Life proves to still be a magnificent film after all these years, for audiences of the previous and current generation. There are few cinematic titles that will be remembered and relived as a special Christmas classic. From this film, I learnt that a wonderful life is for those willing to appreciate what really matters; that ladies and gentlemen is friends and family.

Mark Darrah, Executive Producer of the Dragon Age franchise, has made a new blog post detailing the changes that the development team at Bioware have made to the EA-published Dragon Age: Inquisition since the PAX Prime build back at the start of September. To go along with this update are three fresh screenshots seen within this article.
The blog – which can be read in its entirety here – specifically notes the additions and enhancements found in Bioware’s “Holiday Build”, which is an in-house tradition allowing the dev team and others in the company to play as complete a version of the game as possible. Mark includes some visual accompaniments to better communicate the progress. Check it out for your latest look at the title.
Ahead of the launch of their huge update for Dofus and Wakfu, we got to chat with Ankama Games Marketing Director David Talmat, the man behind the cult-classic MMO games that have captured the imaginations of millions of players across the globe. We talk about what’s new with the update and what they have in store for the 10th anniversary of Dofus. Read on for our interview with Olivier Comte.
CC: To start things off, you have a new update out for Dofus and Wakfu, can you tell us what new features will be included with the update?
A: The most interesting feature in the latest update is the whole new sidekick system, which has been introduced with the Multimen. This update also offers players a load of Christmas content for both games. In DOFUS, players can also try to get their hands on one of the Dofus (powerful dragon eggs) through a new quest which is part of the game’s main quest.
CC: What exactly are the Multi-men and how will they be featured in both Dofus and Wakfu?
A: The sidekick system, which includes the Multimen, lets players control one or two extra characters alongside their main character. This opens up the possibility of new combat tactics and can take battles in different directions than their used to.
CC: In what way do you feel that the Multi-men will change the way players play Dofus and Wakfu?
A: Whatever the engagement of the player in the game, with the help of the Multimen they can access content that was previously only unlockable while playing with other players.
It’s also very tactical. You can choose a character that is totally different than yours in order to combine your skills and see what happens.
CC: How important do you feel updates are to MMO games?
A: It’s one of the most important things to consider when developing MMO games. You have to make your game evolve, keep the players interested in it, and offer them new quests and experiences regularly. Having an update almost every month is one of the keys to our success.
CC: For those who haven’t played Dofus or Wakfu, how would you describe these games to them?
A: Both are humorous and colorful games with manga inspired graphics. They’re set in a rich fantasy universe called the Krosmoz, which includes many references to heroic-fantasy, but also to pop culture, history and mythology. I should also mention the tactical gameplay which is central to the experience – it has similarities with Final Fantasy Tactics for example – and also the 15 different character classes in each game.
CC: Dofus and Wakfu are incredibly unique types of games, they are something different to the normal MMO games. Do you feel that this has contributed to their success?
A: Absolutely it has! Our games feature a tactical turn-based combat system which is quite unique in online games. But they also have strong political and economic systems.
CC: Both of these games are quite distinct from one another, what do you think is the main thing that sets them apart?
A: WAKFU is set in the same universe as DOFUS but a few hundred years in the future. Both games have complex gameplay systems under the surface with 15 character classes and turn based combat alongside a lot of other features that fans of the genre will be familiar with. Other major differences with WAKFU are its more complex political and economic systems plus a very interesting housing feature. In WAKFU, everything is down to the players.
DOFUS was launched nearly 10 years ago and today its content is very rich. We have the same commitment to developing the content for WAKFU. DOFUS has very distinctive graphics but also a different set of spells. On top of that, the way the characters are built in DOFUS is not the same and the PvP play is more challenging than WAKFU.
CC: These games have somewhat of an anime style to them. Is there any particular anime that influenced these games?
A: The various Japanese animated series broadcast in France in the 1980’s that we grew up with are a great source of inspiration, as is the output of Studio Ghibli and comic books from both France and the US.
CC: With the 10 year anniversary of Dofus coming up soon, what can we expect in terms of celebrations?
A: We’re currently planning a lot of events to celebrate, both in game and in real life. Among these will be retrospectives where we will go through the archives and dig out the best stories about the development of the game to share with our players.
CC: What new things can we expect from Dofus and Wakfu as we head into 2014?
A: Both games will get a new theme and a new innovative feature each year, and the sidekick system (of which the Multimen are a part) is going to be significantly developed. We have a lot of different ideas to expand the world of DOFUS and WAKFU and offer new experiences, and we’re very excited about sharing them with our players.
CC: What would you like to say to all of the Dofus and Wakfu fans out there?
A: Are you ready for another decade with us? Because we’re ready for you.
You can check out Dofus and Wakfu on Ankama’s official website here. The new update for the games are now available for download. Update your game to see the mighty power of the Multi-Men. Special thanks to Ankama Games for setting up this interview and for the opportunity.
