STAR WARS™: FORCE ARENA INTRODUCES FOUR NEW CHARACTERS AND REPLAY FEATURE

STAR WARS™: FORCE ARENA INTRODUCES FOUR NEW CHARACTERS AND REPLAY FEATURE

SEOUL, Korea – Apr. 5, 2017 Netmarble Games Corp., the fastest-growing mobile game company in Asia, today announced a new update into Star Wars™: Force Arena featuring four new character cards, new features in Guild, Replays, and a newly balanced 2vs2 play.

With the update, four new characters from Rogue One: A Star Wars™ Story have been added into the game including the Imperial Death Trooper and the TX-225 Assault Tank from the Galactic Empire, and Keredian Partisans and Rebel Demolitionists from the Rebel Alliance. Death Troopers, who are the elite soldiers of Imperial Intelligence, were featured in the recent movie as bodyguards and enforcers for Director Krennic, and has been one of the fan favorites since.

Star Wars™: Force Arena is also introducing a new feature in the Guild System, strengthening the social aspect of the game. Guild members can now freely request and donate character cards to others in the same guild. Also, Guild members can take part in missions together and receive special card packs after completing each mission.

One of the biggest changes to the recent update is in the game’s balance, starting with the 2vs2 normal match. While players will continue to play for a better rank, tier, more credits and card packs in the 1vs1 ranked match, the 2vs2 normal match is now a non-ranked match, meaning that players can play the game more casually without affecting their rank or tier, but still receive credits and card packs after victory. Also, players now taking part in 2vs2 normal matches will each play with the same level deck, bringing a more balanced, fair matchup for each battle.

Replays are now available in Star Wars™: Force Arena, and players can view all matches they’ve played for the past three days. Also, players can view Top 20 matches based on stats including leader kills, squad kills, number of tower destructions, and number of comebacks wins. The Top20 match highlights will be renewed every 4 hours.

“We hope players have more fun and share great strategies with each other through newly introduced character card donations and Replays in Star Wars™: Force Arena,” said Seungwon Lee, Chief Marketing Officer of Netmarble Games. “Now players can enjoy 2vs2 in a fair environment without worrying about rank drop and also bring their best game with four new characters including the Death Trooper.”

Star Wars™: Force Arena boasts more than 80 playable in-game cards, including new faces from the recent movie release, Rogue One™: A Star Wars™ Story. Star Wars™: Force Arena is available on the iTunes App Store and Google Play. For more information on the game, visit the official website at www.StarWarsForceArena.com.

Composer Olivier Derivière Pioneers Real Time Generated Interactive Music for Video Games in GET EVEN™

Composer Olivier Derivière Pioneers Real Time Generated Interactive Music for Video Games in GET EVEN™

“Game music’s eclectic daredevil” takes musical immersion in games to new level with innovative interactive music 2.0 techniques and 3D audio tech

For more than a decade, IFMCA award-winning composer Olivier Derivière (‘Remember Me’, ‘Assassin’s Creed IV Freedom Cry’), hailed by MTV as “Game music’s eclectic daredevil,” has been scoring music for animation, films and video games and is widely acclaimed for both his composition and innovative approaches to connecting music with the game experience.

With his latest work on the psychological thriller game ‘GET EVEN’, developed by Polish studio The Farm 51 and published by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe, Derivière is once again challenging industry conventions and enhancing the player’s interactive experience through music.

To fully immerse players in the center of the game’s multi-dimensional story, Derivière created a visceral and emotional musical score – rendered live in the game’s engine – that infuses sound sources from within the game’s environment and reacts in real-time with the actions of the player.

“Through the use of real-time MIDI, live musicians recorded in ambisonics, and other audio tricks, the gaming environment itself is now an orchestra waiting to be conducted, and everything in it is a potential instrument,” says Derivière.

An intense and genre-defying musical journey combining organic electronic music and live orchestra, recorded and mixed in 3D audio with the Brussels Philharmonic at Galaxy Studios, Belgium, Derivière’s score conveys a vast spectrum of emotions whereby all the music is connected directly to the meaning of the game.

Driven by his passion to provide players with a unique musical experience that truly reflects the game, both musically and directly in sync with the gameplay itself, With ‘GET EVEN’ Derivière continues to innovate and enhance the player’s interactive experience through music. For more information visit http://olivierderiviere.com.

GET EVEN™ will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on May 26. For more information visit http://www.getevengame.com.

Video Review

Overview

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is an action RPG inspired by Norse mythology. Players take on the role of the chief of the Ulfung clan, a band of misfits and outcasts who lead the charge to stop the war between the Jotan and the Gods of Asgard. Blessed by their patron god, gamers will slay hordes of creatures from Norse lore, conquer the mortal foes of the Ulfung, and cement their legacy as the most feared Viking warrior.

Story

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard’s story is rather weak. While the overall idea for the plot has good potential, the execution just falls flat. A large part of the problem is that the writing lacks direction. The overall plot is presented in a very serious tone but the dialogue is often a lame attempt at being funny, corny to the point of cringe-worthy, or just plain lazy. The main character’s lines makes them unlikable, as most lines make them out to be a blood thirsty brute who answers almost everything with awful one liners. There are a few moments where the game is genuinely funny, but these moments are few and far between. The disjointed dialogue feels like different writers handled the script writing and at no time spoke to each other or that management decided to demand serious changes to the script mid-way. The game feels like wasted potential as the setting has plenty of content to explore and there are characters like Helga who would be well served by actual character development.

Gameplay

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is a standard action RPG with a few twists. Character creation consists of the normal aesthetic choices, but instead of choosing a class, players pick a deity to initially worship. The choice in deity will dictate the player’s weapon specialty: two handed, dual wielded one-hander, one-hander and shield, bow, or staff. Players’ rage ability is based on the weapon, while remaining abilities are purchased from the skill tree. When players kill an enemy, there is a chance it will drop blood. Collected blood immediately restores a little health and is later spent at an altar to the gods to level up. Each level gained awards the character with two points to spend on the skill tree and a point that can increase one of five stats. The skill system leaves little room for creating builds. Each tree is rather linear as each level unlocks only one or two skills. There is no incentive to experiment with dual class builds as most of the time players will lose out on important stats with little gain in return. It leaves the game with a rather bland and overly simple progression system.

I like the combat system in Vikings: Wolves of Midgard. It mixes traditional isometric action RPG combat with mechanics found in modern action games. Stamina fuels both skills and the all-important roll function. Mobility is well rewarded in the game as strikes from behind are guaranteed critical hits and dodging prevents quite a bit of damage in a game where heals are rather limited. Having to choose between a quick burst of speed or dealing a boat load of damage adds a nice layer of complexity to combat. The game also uses a combo system that will be familiar to Diablo 3 players that reward people with extra blood for executing multi-kills and stringing together long hit chains.

The game’s biggest twist to the action RPG genre is the harsh environments. Many levels have some sort of elemental based hazard that players must contend with. Spend too long in a hazard zone and the player will begin taking damage until they can return to a safe area. Stacking elemental protection can extend the length of time a player can spend in a hazardous area, but eventually the player will need to seek cover. I like the idea as these levels become a constant decision between choosing to fight or retreating to a safer area. The cold levels get an extra wrinkle as light armour protects against cold at the cost of armour points, putting melee characters in the difficult position of figuring out how much long term survivability they can sacrifice for short term survivability.

The level design is rather average. Levels tend to be rather linear with several side areas rewarding players who explore with legendary items and level completion bonuses. The level completion bonus that has players destroying all of the totems or shrines in a level is absolutely maddening as they often blend right into the background. The other two level completion bonuses tend to be a little less challenging to complete.

The biggest issue with Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is its subpar controls. The mouse tends to latch onto destroyable items from quite a distance away, making it difficult to navigate with the copious amounts of destroyable objects littered around the maps. Targeting long range AOE abilities with a circular area of effect is just as inconsistent as sometimes the ability would target at the mouse cursor and sometimes right in front of the character. The game generally feels like it was designed for a controller first as movement is much smoother and the game lacks tooltips outside of menus. Another major issue that is not restricted to mouse and keyboard is the many corners that the player could get stuck in. The vendor menus also seem to be lacking some quality of life features like sell all collectibles or a buy back function.

Visuals

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard has rather average graphics. The art style channels a dark look that is popular with many games in the genre. The textures and models look good; however, the animations feel a little unnatural and clunky.

Audio

The audio experience is generally quite good. The soundtrack starts with a Norse style that fits the experience of being a Viking warrior slaughtering hundreds of thousands of enemies perfectly and mixes in some more modern touches at times. I would have preferred if the soundtrack was expanded by three or four tracks to give the game a little more variety. The sound effects are enjoyable. The voice acting threw me for a bit of a loop. The acting is quite good, and the actors make the best out of a lousy script. I just don’t understand the director’s decision to have the player character speak with a Scandinavian accent while the rest of the cast speaks with a British one. I understand a British accent is standard code in English language media for “historical,” but consistency is key.

Overall

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard tries hard to distinguish itself from the hordes of other action RPGs. The elemental exposure system and the modern style combat system is a nice, small twist on the formula. Unfortunately, the game is hampered by iffy PC controls and a boring skill system. When mixed with the poorly written script and middling audio/visual presentation, I can only recommend the game to the most hardcore action RPG addicts looking for a new game on PC and those stuck without really good options on consoles.

The Surge – Target, Loot and Equip in limb-cutting new trailer

The Surge – Target, Loot and Equip in limb-cutting new trailer

Coming May 16 – preorders open now for consoles and PC

April 7th 2017 – Deck13’s upcoming hardcore Action-RPG The Surge comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on May 16, 2017. Today, the latest Target, Loot and Equip Trailer highlights the game’s limb-slicing loot system in all its bloody, brutal glory.

The Surge gives players greater control over what they loot from defeated enemies. During combat, they can individually target specific body parts, which they can damage with a wise combination of vertical and horizontal attacks to then slice off – and what part they dismember directly determines what piece of equipment they loot. When approaching an enemy, players will make a difficult decision: do they target an unarmoured body part for a shorter fight, or risk a lengthier, damaging battle for a chance at slicing off a shiny new piece of equipment?

Balancing risk and reward is core to succeeding in The Surge, and bold players will be rewarded well! The toughest enemies drop the most powerful weapons and armour, so if you see a piece of equipment you like the look of, you’ll need to fight hard for it…or die trying.

The Surge comes May 16th, and is available to pre-order now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Visit the official website

Fractured Space Activates Action Stations with Phase 3 Update, New Player Events

Fractured Space Activates Action Stations with Phase 3 Update, New Player Events

Team-Based Space Combat Game Boosts Action Side of Strategic Gameplay with Less Flying, More Fighting—and More Ways for Players to Reap Rewards

Guildford, UKApril 6, 2016 – Edge Case Games, developers of the award-winning team-based space combat game with over one million players, Fractured Space, today revealed the game’s Phase 3 updates that boost action and game speed have gone live and can be downloaded for free. The new update features a tighter Conquest 2.0 game map to encourage more direct confrontation, makes resource mining more impactful with new drone ships that can be shot down to reduce enemy resources, provides more help for new players with audio Base Commander tips, gets players back into the action faster with shorter respawn rates and much more. The updated gameplay can be seen in today’s new Phase 3 trailer, released in conjunction with the game’s Steam promotion running over the weekend.

Fractured Space pits two teams of five giant capital ships against each other in matches that highlight teamwork and strategy with MOBA-style lanes as players work together to destroy the enemy’s team base. While the free-to-play game continues to emphasize strategy, the new action-oriented changes take into account player feedback for “less flying around and more fighting!” As such, closer quarters maps for the game’s three-lane Conquest mode bring ships nearer the action at all times—without reducing the importance of team tactics or the ability to defend team bases.

The team’s commitment to player satisfaction go beyond core game changes. Edge Case’s live operations focus also provides new player events and rewards on a weekly basis, including 30 day rewards. Next up, starting on April 13th, is a “Credits Rampage” where if the player community earns 100 million credits, all contributors will be awarded a unique Pioneer skin, with a unique Colossus skin arriving if players hit 200 million credits. Other recent events include the Unique Fleets Tournament that began March 25th on Razer Arena, log-in rewards with Legendary Captain Jingles, based on YouTube personality Jingles, and Super Space Bowl XLXX, which pitted US player vs. the rest of the world with free crew pods on the line.

Other updates include the ability to fly any ship in solo vs. AI mode for more comprehensive, free battle testing before purchase, tougher and more strategic AI captains for bot play, a crew level up system for more comprehensive ship customization and other improvements. Complete update details can be found in the Phase 3 update patch notes.

Edge Case Games will keep adding new features to the game under its Open Development model that prioritizes player feedback and shares upcoming plans for comments before they are implemented. The battle to dominate space continues—jump in and help your team to fight to victory!

Joy-Con adds new ways to fight, Evil Ryu and Violent Ken join the roster, team up with a friend in Buddy Battle and go online to test your skills

6th April, 2017 – Relive the glory days and prepare to take on new challengers anytime, anywhere, when Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers – distributed by Nintendo throughout European territories, Australia and New Zealand, and published by Capcom – launches at retail for Nintendo Switch on 26th May.

Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers takes players back to where it all began, and with a host of new control options, multiple game modes, online play and the inclusion of Lite controls for newcomers, friends will be able to experience Street Fighter in a whole new way. When the Nintendo Switch console is docked and by simply removing both Joy-Con controllers from the console, friends can fight for glory from the comfort of their living room, or put their differences aside and team up against the CPU in Buddy Battle. And the Nintendo Switch console can be carried anywhere, empowering warriors to test their might in cafes, at train stations, and any other location to battle all-comers, simply by standing the console upright using the stand and handing a Joy-Con to an opponent.

On top of the 17 classic characters returning to compete in the second World Warrior tournament, powerful new additions Violent Ken and Evil Ryu both join the roster. Violent Ken, who has been brainwashed by M. Bison, and Evil Ryu, the form Ryu takes after succumbing to darkness, are perfect for those that like a highly aggressive playing style. Once players have selected their preferred fighter, they can enjoy a number of modes:

  • In Arcade mode, a single player must defeat 12 warriors on the path to becoming the World Warrior champion
  • Prepare for intense co-op battles as two friends can team up in Buddy Battle to throw down new two-player combos and attack their opponents from both sides
  • Fight locally against a friend or against the CPU in Versus mode
  • Go online and fight against the best players across the mode in either ranked or casual matches
  • Brush up on old skills – or learn new ones – in the training mode before taking on new challengers
  • In the brand new mode called Way of the Hado, players can play a unique first-person mode and experience what it’s like to be Ryu. By using motion controls to perform moves, players can fight off an onslaught of opponents using the iconic Shoryuken (dragon punch), Tatsumaki Senpukyaku (hurricane kick), and Ryu’s fireball super combo, Shinku Hadoken

For those new to Street Fighter who are looking to level the playing field against more experienced players, there’s an option to switch between Lite and Pro controls. Lite controls let players perform special moves or super combos by either touching the touch screen or pressing a single button, whereas traditional Pro controls offer all the classic button inputs engrained into players’ muscle memory. The game also supports the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, available separately.

Regardless of their experience level, all players can fight in style by using the Colour Editor to customise the colour scheme of their favourite character, giving them their ideal look. Enter the style settings and select between new high-definition visuals for a modern look, or select classic graphics and witness Street Fighter II just as it was in the arcades. Fight fans can relive their favourite local matches and show off their best combos to impressed passers-by with the replay feature. Take a break from brawling and visit the gallery, which includes over 1,400 highly detailed illustrations from throughout the Street Fighter series, taken from the out-of-print Street Fighter Artworks: Supremacy book.
