LEAGUE OF ORIGIN GEARS UP FOR BLOCKBUSTER WEEKEND

LEAGUE OF ORIGIN GEARS UP FOR BLOCKBUSTER WEEKEND

With only 13 days to go until the inaugural League of Legends: League of Origin begins, Riot Games Oceania has today revealed the final teams, ticket details and schedule for the first region vs region esports event to hit Oceania’s shores.

Taking place from 2pm AEST on the 3-4 June at ESL Studios in Auburn, NSW, top Oceanic Pro League (OPL) and Oceanic Challenger Series (OCS) pro players from New Zealand, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria will battle across two days to be crowned the best League of Legends region. The first match on Saturday will see the biggest rivals, New South Wales and Queensland, go head-to-head.

With pride on the line, Shoutcasters and Region Selectors, Cameron ‘Crunch’ Russell (NZ),  Zack ‘Rusty’ Pye (QLD), Matthew ‘Fish’ Stewart (NSW), Jake ‘Spawn’ Tiberi (VIC), have confirmed their final line ups and they’re all ‘quietly’ confident their team can win it all.

“There’s always something to prove in the Australian/New Zealand rivalry, so when it comes to League of Origin you’re certainly going to see the strength of Kiwi patriotism in backing our team,” said Crunch.

“I’d call us the underdogs in this story,” says Rusty. “We had a limited player pool to choose from, names that may not compare in magnitude to some of our opponents. But we’re still Queensland.”

“The past decade has seen a lot of Maroon victories.” says Fish. “This time the Blues will be leading the pack, and we will take NZ and VIC as collateral damage along the way!”

“Mid lane is so stacked in Victoria,” Spawn acknowledges. “It’s kind of insane that the three I rate the highest in the OPL are all from my home state!”

Tickets for League of Origin will go on sale on Friday 26 May at 4pm AEST, with 150 seats available each day. Tickets are $15 per day and the ticket website will be released on oce.lolesports.com on Friday.

The packed two day schedule, made possible by our sponsors at Red Bull, will also be streamed live on watch.oce.lolesports.com.

Empathy: Path of Whispers Review

Empathy: Path of Whispers

Developer: Pixel Night
Publisher: Iceberg Interactive
Platforms: PC (reviewed)
Release Date: 16 May 2017
Price: – $19.99USD – Available Here

Overview

Walking Simulators are games that you have to approach with a specific state of mind. They’re made to be meditative,  thought-provoking games that you play at your own pace. No pressure to get anywhere fast and no one is chasing you. For this to work, a typical walking sim is supposed to have a strong foundation on a compelling story, great atmosphere and eye-candy visuals as a cherry on top. So does Empathy: Path of Whispers passes all the checkmarks with flying colors? Well, there’s only one way to find out (spoiler: by reading the rest of this review).

Story

The game opens up with a slideshow of paintings (well-drawn paintings, even) and a narrator giving us the first taste of the story. According to him, “something happened” and “violence soon took to the streets” (wow, talk about being vague). The world is in shambles but there is still hope for it to be saved. The narrator doesn’t tell us exactly how yet, only that we need to find a certain room with him but hey, I’ll take what I can get. Not that all of that tells us much, we only went from knowing nothing to almost nothing. Next, we’re thrown into a room (not the same one as the narrator mentioned, otherwise this would be a really short game) with a big control panel and one nifty tool that will be our companion for the rest of the game.  Besides having our right hand constantly occupied from now, E-15P energy scanner introduces us with the main mechanic of the game. As much as the world is torn apart there are still remnants left by the former citizens. These are called mementos and they can be almost anything, ranging from various tools to common household objects. You can usually recognize them by seeing a bit of static on them and having a bluish glow. Pointing out the E-15P in their direction and scanning them properly aligns them back into our world. We’re also rewarded with a short audio recording giving us a tiny glimpse into the story.

Gameplay

The game is divided into acts aka levels and every act follows a standard formula. There’s usually one main point of interest in a level, a door to unlock or a machine to start up and we do that by discovering all mementos in the area. To avoid a lot of empty walks, our scanner also has a built in radar so we can easily pinpoint those mementos. Unfortunately, that also means that most of the time you can just sprint around, zig-zagging all over the place till you scan enough mementos and the game tells you “that’s it, go here now connect the pieces and finish the level”. On the other hand, the visual angle of the game is good enough to distract us from accidental speedrunning so let’s talk more about that in the next segment.

Visuals

The game has four presets that impact the quality of visuals: low, medium, high and ultra. In reality, there are only two:  absolutely stunning and “is my graphics card dead now?” Seriously though, anything below high is not worth mentioning (or playing). The downgrade in quality after the high setting is horrendous but considering that the requirements for the game are not taxing at all, it’s hardly an issue. So unless you’re playing on a 10-year old rig there’s nothing to worry about.  The game is well aware of what it can offer on the visual front. The first act of the game introduces us to a  sector of Atlas Park consisting of a beautiful forest and cozy lake at midnight. I actually spent most of my time there despite the area having only 2-3 required mementos to find. Every corner and a turn I took was a perfect screenshot material. This aspect of the game would be even more impressive if it weren’t for some underwhelming level choices later. The next act threw me into one of the blandest and uninspiring areas of the game. As much as it was important and integral to the story, I raced to finish it as fast as I could. Although I was handsomely rewarded by arriving in Eagleview next (one of the most beautiful locations in the game), it’s not really a good sign when a game has “that one level we all despise”.

Audio

The soundtrack in Empathy: Path of Whispers is on par with visuals, except it doesn’t have “that one tune we all despise”. Most of the time we are accompanied with soothing piano renditions but sometimes it will take a turn to eerie notes. It works great paired with certain ominous locations in the game. The only thing that bugged me is why the narrator had to be so chatty at the start of the game. I know that the world is all screwed and in danger, but let me just enjoy some nice music while I can. Still, don’t take this as a jab at the voice acting in any way. He might have been a bit clingy at the start but the audio recordings you scavenge around show some remarkable voice acting throughout the game. Considering that the only thing I wanted was that music wouldn’t be too annoying, I’d say I got more than I bargained for.

Overall

Empathy: Path of Whispers is a game that took a look at other walking sims and decided not to repeat some common mistakes. Along with that path, it also made a few of its own. The story is rather interesting near the end when everything finally pieces together, but before that happens it hardly serves as a driving force behind all the exploring. What pushes this game above mediocrity is great visuals, good soundtrack but not storytelling. It’s all great once you get the full picture but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Nevertheless, If walking simulators are your thing, I’m certain you’re welcome this game with open arms. I know I enjoyed it, it only irks me how a few missteps are what prevents this good game from being great.

BUNGIE AND ACTIVISION UNVEIL DESTINY 2 GAMEPLAY WITH NEW, ACTION-PACKED, CHARACTER-DRIVEN STORY AND A BREADTH OF ACTIVITES IN A LIVE BROADCAST

BUNGIE AND ACTIVISION UNVEIL DESTINY 2 GAMEPLAY WITH NEW, ACTION-PACKED, CHARACTER-DRIVEN STORY AND A BREADTH OF ACTIVITES IN A LIVE BROADCAST

Blizzard Entertainment to Host Destiny 2 on PC via Battle.net® Destiny 2 Gives Players New Ways to Connect and Play with Others Through “Guided Games” Feature

May 19, 2017 – Bungie and Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI), debuted Destiny 2’s gameplay for the first time to a global, livestreamed audience in a hands-on event at Jet Center in Hawthorne, California.  Destiny 2 is the sequel to the internationally acclaimed Destiny, a first-person action game that takes the player on an epic journey to defend humanity from annihilation. The live broadcast showcased a variety of the activities, opening on a dramatic campaign mission that sets up the premise of the game to answer how you recover when your home is destroyed and your powers are taken away.  The broadcast went on to detail the game’s social and cooperative activities, including the all-new “Guided Games” feature while highlighting multiple brand-new destinations.  In September, Destiny 2 will be available on PlayStation®4 systems with additional, timed exclusive* content, and Xbox One (PlayStation®Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription, respectively, required for significant features).  Additionally, Destiny 2 will be available on PC at retail and as the first third-party game to be offered digitally via Battle.net®, Blizzard Entertainment’s online gaming service.

The broadcast was streamed globally in four languages and emphasised that the game will offer a fresh start to all players with no previous knowledge or background needed.  Destiny 2’s story allows the player to enjoy a heroic, cinematic journey, either solo or with friends.  A key announcement during the livestream was about a new feature called, “Guided Games,” that makes it easy for all players to experience the most challenging and rewarding activities the game has to offer. This new feature allows solo players to find and play with other players to enjoy Destiny 2 and earn new in-game rewards like weapons, and armour.  Also available for attendees was “Countdown,” an all-new competitive multiplayer mode as well as a three-player cooperative activity on a new map called, “Inverted Spire.”

In the story of Destiny 2, the last safe city on Earth has fallen and lay in ruins, occupied by a powerful new enemy and his elite army, the Red Legion. Every player creates their own character called a “Guardian,” humanity’s chosen protectors. As a Guardian in Destiny 2, players must master new abilities and weapons to reunite the city’s forces, stand together and fight back to reclaim their home.

Destiny established a blockbuster, new franchise and a massive global community of amazingly passionate fans. And today, we are giving people their first look at the gameplay of Destiny 2,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision. “Destiny 2 has a great story, an iconic new villain, awesome characters you want to go on an epic adventure with, and of course, tons of the amazing gameplay that Destiny is known for. We, along with our partners at Bungie, have listened carefully to our community, and have added thoughtful innovations that make the game, and all of its content, more accessible to more types of players than ever before.”

Bungie CEO, Pete Parsons, said, “This is a defining moment for our studio, and we couldn’t have done it without the continued support of our partners in Activision, Sony and now Blizzard.”  He added, “We have an amazing community of players who have been with us on this journey, but with the sequel, the team are paying close attention to welcoming new and returning Guardians to the universe with something for every type of gamer, including gameplay for solo, cooperative and competitive players with new places to explore and adventures to conquer.”

“As Destiny fans, we were excited to learn that the sequel was coming to PC,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re pleased to support Destiny 2 as the first non-Blizzard game on our platform, and we look forward to joining fellow Guardians in their fight against the Red Legion.”

Destiny 2 is currently CTC by the Australian Classification Board and will be available at a suggested retail price of $99.95 AUD RRP. The product line-up will also feature the Destiny 2 – Game + Expansion Pass Bundle at $139.95 AUD RRP, the Destiny 2 – Digital Deluxe Edition featuring premium digital content at $149.95 AUD RRP, the Limited Edition at $149.95 AUD RRP, and the Collector’s Edition, featuring a fully-wearable Destiny 2 – Frontier Bag, Expansion Pass, premium digital content and a Cabal-themed Collector’s Box for $349.95 AUD RRP.
