Quake Champions Closed Beta Introduces New Maps, Hero, and Weapon

Those lucky enough to be participating in the Quake Champions closed beta received a huge surprise during Bethesda’s E3 Showcase when servers went down for a short time. When they came back online, new content was available for the free to play competitive FPS. The marquee addition is the introduction of Wolfenstein hero BJ Blazkowicz to the line up. His active ability allows him do dual wield any weapon for a short time, including the newly introduced Tribolt weapon.

Additionally, three new maps have been added to the game. Lockbox is designed for Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch games. The map is littered with traps, forcing players to be hyper-aware of their surroundings. Blood Run and Corrupted Keep are designed for Duel mode where two players will go head to head.

The update also contained some smaller quality of life changes. Bethesda reports that a spectator mode and custom game modes have been added to the game. Matchmaking and the Sacrifice mode rule set have also been improved. Additionally, video tutorials have been added to the game to help new players.

Get Your BFG Ready, Doom VFR Coming to HTC Vive and PS VR

If it has electronics in it, you probably can run Doom on it. After all, it’s not a platform until you run the grand daddy of FPS games on it. We’ve seen the game on graphing calculators, printers, and the Apple Watch.

PlayStation VR and HTC Vive will be getting their own version of Doom soon, but in slightly higher resolution and with controls designed with VR in mind. Doom VFR uses a brand new control scheme designs with VR in mind. Instead of walking or running around, players mark out a near by location to teleport. To dodge incoming attacks, players have jets that will allow them to strafe around quickly.

Doom VFR is set on a UAC facility on Mars during a demonic invasion. Players take on the role of a human enhanced with cybernetics tasked with cleaning up this hellish mess. The game does not have a firm launch date yet, but Bethesda expects the game to be released some time in 2017.

Creation Club Bringing Paid 3rd Party Content to Fallout 4 and Skyrim

During their E3 2017 presentation, Bethesda announced Creation Club will be coming to Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this summer. The program will offer a way for content creators to work with Bethesda to create new content to both games and get paid for their efforts. The program will require content creators to pitch new ideas to Bethesda. Once accepted, Bethesda and the creator will work together to develop the idea into a full fledged DLC that can be bought with Creation Club credits. The resulting content will be checked through Bethesda’s quality assurance team, meaning it will be 100% compatible with all save files, achievements, DLCs, and other Creation Club content. For gamers, the credits are purchased through their platform’s store and are transferable between all three platforms.

Bethesda’s latest efforts to continue monetizing Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is incredibly intriguing. The PR nightmare that followed the Skyrim paid mods program of 2015 was swift and merciless for both Valve and Bethesda. The company is clearly making an effort to prove it is not making the same mistake twice. Technically, this is the same as contracting out the development of an expansion pack to a game to a smaller studio at a much smaller scale, but the bigger question is if the fans will see it the same way.
