Splatoon 2 Details Revealed in the Freshest Nintendo Direct Yet

Get to Know the New Features, New Weapons and New Styles Before the Game Launches on July 21

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– With the Splatoon 2 game launching exclusively for the Nintendo Switch console in just a couple of weeks, Nintendo partnered with the renowned Squid Research Lab to provide a refresher on some of the new and returning features coming to the squid sequel. The special Nintendo Direct presentation highlighted many of the game’s new features, new weapons, new locations and, most importantly for all the fashion-forward cephalopods out there, its fresh new styles. The video also touched on SplatNet 2, the new service for mobile devices that displays information about Splatoon 2 like stage schedules, gear and stats. SplatNet 2 is part of the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app launching on July 21, which lets players send multiplayer invites to their friends via social media, as well as enables the use of voice chat in battles.

Splatoon 2 is a huge, robust sequel to the original Splatoon,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Fans that played and loved the first game will have plenty of new stuff to enjoy, while the game is also a great introduction for players new to the colorful and stylish series.”

Before the game launches on July 21, Nintendo Switch owners can dive into the fun with the Splatoon 2: Splatfest World Premiere demo. This special Splatfest will happen July 15 from 3 to 7 p.m. PT. Players just have to download the free demo in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch and choose a team before the Splatfest begins. The demo can be downloaded early before the Splatfest goes live, starting later today.

To view the Nintendo Direct video in its entirety, visit http://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct. Some of the highlights revealed in the video include:

  • Custom Style: In Splatoon 2, Inklings can be customized to fit the player’s taste. Things like eye color, hair style and skin tone can all be adjusted when creating a character. And this doesn’t even mention the fresh new gear like shirts, shoes and hats that can also be equipped. Since two years have passed in the world of Inkopolis, many styles have been upgraded so no one is caught splatted in something that is “so 2015.”
  • Galleria: To find all these hot new fashion trends, players just have to make their way to the Inkopolis Galleria. This row of popular gear and weapon shops is where all the cool kids and squids hang out. In Ye Olde Cloth Shoppe, a jellyfish named Jelfonzo will help players obtain T-shirts and jackets. A spider crab named Bisk runs the shoe shop Shella Fresh, while Flow the sea slug helps players at the headwear shop Headspace. Weapons can be picked up by stopping by Ammo Knights, run by the knowledgeable horseshoe crab Sheldon. And who doesn’t love food? Inklings can grab a bite at Crusty Sean’s dive to get more points and in-game currency from battles.
  • Gear: Equipping gear in Splatoon 2 will give players special abilities. Each piece of gear has certain abilities, and there are even additional abilities that appear as players use the gear more and more in battle. By speaking to Murch, a sea urchin (naturally), players can freshen up their gear with abilities that reduce ink consumption or help them move faster – some will even decrease respawn time! There is a wide variety of abilities in the game, so selecting the right one to use could make or break the battle.
  • Fresh Features: Some additional features coming to Splatoon 2 include a handy menu that lets players change the sensitivity of the controls separately for TV and Handheld mode, amiibo functionality and the ability to post drawings directly to social media. By tapping a Splatoon series amiibo figure, players can save control settings, gear and weapon loadouts, and nicknames to any Splatoon amiibo figure. New Splatoon series and legacy Splatoon amiibo are all compatible with Splatoon 2 and can also reward players with exclusive gear when tapped. (The game saves data on the amiibo figure, which can hold data for one game at a time. The game, system and amiibo are sold separately. Visit http://www.nintendo.com/amiibo for details about amiibo functionality.)
  • Turf War: Turf War, which finds two teams of four battling to ink the most turf, makes its grand return in Splatoon 2. There are all kinds of different stages in the game, ranging from city streets, a sports club, an academy and even a BMX track. Different stages have different environmental hazards, so players will have to work together to figure out the best strategy.
  • Ranked Battles: Every two hours, the three Ranked Battle modes rotate, offering something new to play. The three modes are Splat Zones, which finds teams fighting for control of Splat Zones placed on the stage; Tower Control, a fast-and-frantic mode in which players ride a moving tower; and the chaotic fun of Rainmaker. By winning a Ranked Battle, players increase their rank in each mode. Ranked Battles can be played online*. The modes in Ranked Battle can be played in local multiplayer** in Private Battle.
  • League Battles: League Battles allow players to form a team with friends, fight alongside them and battle their way to the top of the charts. There are two ways to join in these 4-on-4 battles: Players can enlist one other friend to form a pair and be matched with another pair, or connect with three friends to form a four-squid team. Once teams are created, players compete in Ranked Battle modes to aim for a top ranking.
  • Salmon Run: This new local- and online-multiplayer mode* to Splatoon 2 finds up to four players** working together to defeat bosses and collect Power Eggs in a limited amount of time. Each match in Salmon Run lasts for three waves, with players having to collect a select number of Power Eggs to advance to the next wave – oh, and at least one player on the team has to stay alive. This last part might be tough since the stage is overrun by Salmonid enemies and giant bosses, each with their own weakness. Salmon Run is a frantic multiplayer mode that can be played locally with friends at anytime and is also available to play online at designated times, just like Splatfest.
  • Single-Player Adventure: Oh no! Callie (of the famous Squid Sisters) has disappeared! Of course, there’s no need to panic. Players can just hop into the game’s single-player adventure to ink their way through a variety of creative obstacles, monstrous bosses and devious Octarians. This single-player mode is also a great way to learn the basics of the game and try out different weapons.
  • So Many Ways to Play!: Splatoon 2 can be played in so many different ways, including TV Mode, Handheld Mode and Tabletop Mode, as well as online* or local multiplayer**. And not only are the game-play options numerous, but the jam-packed sequel can be played anywhere!
  • Main Weapons: In Splatoon 2, weapons come in sets of three: a main weapon, a sub weapon and a special weapon. There are many different types of main weapons, from long-range weapons to short-range ones. Some new (wonderfully named) weapons introduced in Splatoon 2 include the Clash Blaster, Flingza Roller, Goo Tuber and the Dapple Dualies.
  • Sub Weapons: In addition to inking and attacking, many sub weapons will help players with other abilities, such as defending from attacks or revealing enemy positions. The new Autobomb, for example, will find an enemy and automatically follow them, while Toxic Mist, well, is exactly how it sounds! It fills the surrounding area with a poisonous mist, reducing the ink of opponents who dare step in its range, as well as making them move slower.
  • Special Weapons: All the special weapons in Splatoon 2 are new! Some of the weapons making their debut are the Tenta Missiles, the Inkjet, the Sting Ray and the Baller, which lets players roll up walls in an explosive hamster ball. Special weapons can be used once a player’s special meter is filled.
  • Post-Launch Updates: Like the first Splatoon, Splatoon 2 will see a continuing rollout of updates to the game. These updates will take the form of new weapons, like the umbrella-shaped Brella, new gear and additional stages.
  • SplatNet 2: When the Nintendo Switch Online app* launches for mobile devices on July 21, players will also have access to SplatNet 2. This Splatoon 2-specific service helps players stay in touch with Inkopolis even when they are away from their Nintendo Switch systems! SplatNet 2 displays information like stage schedules, gear and stats, and even lets users view their lifetime inkage, a feature that shows how much turf a player has inked compared to real-world places. The Nintendo Switch Online app allows users to invite other players to join Private Battles, League Battles, Salmon Run and Splatfest Battles, as well as communicate with those players using voice chat. (A compatible mobile device and persistent internet connection are required. Data charges may apply.)
  • Splatfests: While content updates for Splatoon 2 will last around a year, more limited-time Splatfests for the game are planned for the next two years. To kick things off, a free demo to try out the first Splatfest for Splatoon 2 is going to be held on July 15 from 3 to 7 p.m. PT. Players just have to download the free demo in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch and get ready to decide if cake or ice cream is their dessert of choice. To prepare in advance, the demo can be downloaded early before the Splatfest goes live, starting later today. Once downloaded, players can start the demo to vote for their team, and even visit the in-game mailbox to create and share drawings in support of their team.

UPPERCUT ANNOUNCES CITY OF BRASS, AN ARABIAN NIGHTS THEMED 1ST PERSON ROGUE-LITE COMING TO PC & CONSOLES

UPPERCUT ANNOUNCES CITY OF BRASS, AN ARABIAN NIGHTS THEMED 1ST PERSON ROGUE-LITE COMING TO PC & CONSOLES

Become a daring thief in a punishing, procedurally generated quest filled with treasure, traps and ghoulish foes. Armed with scimitar and a versatile whip, players must lash and slash, trick and trap their way to the heart of an opulent, ancient metropolis before the sands of time run out

Canberra, 6th July 2017: Leaping from the pages of the Arabian Nights, adventure awaits in the accursed City of Brass – a place of legend beneath the sand, filled with danger and reward. Infested with mischievous spirits and deadly traps, its shifting streets are brimming with the wealth of a nation. Players assume the role of a cunning thief, battling to reach a fabled treasure at the city’s heart, wielding a blade and whip that can be used to disarm, trip or stun enemies, to swing to safety, grab inaccessible objects or even break through flimsy barricades.

But the city itself also has teeth. Players have to leap across pits, slide under blades, dodge spears or arrows, evade or employ sprung paving slabs, and sidestep poison gas traps – all the while manipulating these hazards to their advantage against diverse supernatural foes.

City of Brass has eternal replayability, designed to encourage combinative gameplay within an ever-changing, carefully optimized cityscape. Gamers must learn to manipulate every system if they are to survive, moving swiftly and deftly through each level, balancing the need for loot with the absolute requirement to escape within the time limit.

“Developing a game with multiple, interacting systems that players can freely combine feels like a return to our roots, drawing on our experiences working on BioShock and many of our other favorites,” explained Ed Orman, Lead Designer. “Players must learn how to use the traps to kill their foes, and even turn enemies against each another. You’ll perish in the City of Brass – often, and quite horribly – but as your skills improve and you discover new ways to cheat death, you’ll return to fight another day.”

Game features include:

  • Loot! Collect treasure to increase your score, plunder chests for weapon and armor upgrades or powerful relics – but make it to the exit in time or face death by dervish…
  • Genies! Incarcerated within the city, and most are friendly… Some will barter gear, upgrades, secrets, unlocks or protections in return for loot. Use one of three wishes to unlock a powerful benefit, or for a king’s ransom, buy a genie’s freedom in return for help in the final battle.
  • Improv! When your sword just isn’t enough, get creative: smash your enemies with explosive vases, blind them with a brick to the face, or force them into traps.
  • Ghouls! The city is filled with wretched spirits of all flavors, all with unique behaviors, all with the singular character defect that they want to kill you.
  • Smarts! The algorithms that create each level are tweaked to generate a logically laid out cityscape of interconnected chambers, courtyards and corridors.
  • Agility! The rhythmic interplay of blade and lash has been carefully tuned along with sprinting, crouching, sliding, leaping and vaulting to give a fluid, balanced and natural feel to the movement and melee.
  • Challenges! For the ultimate test, experienced players can encumber themselves with Divine Burdens, global modifiers that change enemy abilities, spawn behaviors or multiply environmental hazards.
  • Permadeath! No two playthroughs are ever the same: play, die, and play again, each time using what you’ve learned to get further. Are you tenacious enough to reach the heart of the City of Brass?

City of Brass will be released for Windows PC on Steam in fall 2017, with versions for PlayStation® 4 systems and Xbox One following in 2018.

Spider-Man: Homecoming and some of Spider-Man’s Greatest Foes Join MARVEL Future Fight!

Players presented with new costumes, Super Villains, quest and updates to the game

Seoul, Korea (July 5, 2017) – The fastest-growing mobile game company in Asia, Netmarble Games Corp., introduced two new uniforms inspired by Spider-Man: Homecoming and six new Super Villains into its hit action role-playing game MARVEL Future Fight! The new villains are all infamous foes of Spider-Man, and players will be able to face them in battle with a special quest and a new quest pack.

Two new uniforms were added into MARVEL Future Fight that were inspired by Spider-Man: Homecoming: the “Homemade” suit for Spider-Man and a new uniform for Vulture. Additionally, a new Anti-Venom uniform was added.   “With the Spider-Man: Homecoming film coming up, we thought it was fitting to introduce new uniforms inspired by the film to bring more excitement and fun into the game,” said Seungwon Lee, Chief Global officer at Netmarble Games.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be releasing in cinemas around the world from July 5th.

Improvements were made to the Alliance Conquest, as all allies can take part in the conquest and the Alliance Leader can be the only one to cancel it. When players use backup skills, push alerts are now sent out to all allies. Players can also check which allies are online while being able to sort out heroes by type, level and current status. Other updates include collecting ISO-8 for growth, improvements with the tutorial, and a new point system for growth points.

The full list of new characters joining MARVEL Future Fight today includes:

●      Sandman – A classic Spider-Man antagonist with the ability to transform himself into sand-like forms that he can manipulate and shape at will.

●      Lizard – When he lost his right arm in an accident, Dr. Curt Connors experimented with reptilian limb generation. The serum he developed turned him into a beastly, lizard-like creature.

●      Kraven the Hunter – As one of the world’s greatest hunters, he has honed his years of training and experience towards one goal: to hunt Spider-Man, the ultimate prey!

●      Rhino – With a virtually impenetrable, rhinoceros-like armor bonded to his body, Rhino uses his massive strength and speed against his most troublesome adversary – Spider-Man!

●      Mysterio – A Hollywood stunt man and special effects wizard turned Super Villain, who uses his holographic costume and deceptive illusions to deceive and antagonize Spider-Man.

●      Vulture – With the help of a special suit with large wings, the Vulture possesses augmented strength and speed that allows him to take to the air at dizzying speeds to battle his arachnoid arch-nemesis.

To celebrate, XSEED Games will host a one-week 10% off launch sale for the base game as well as 20% off all of the Windows PC version’s DLC from July 25 through July 31.

The Nintendo Switch version will release in North America simultaneously with the Windows PC version on July 25 via the Nintendo eShop and at retail stores for MSRP $59.99.

About Fate/EXTELLA

Developed by Marvelous Inc. and expanding upon the extensive Fate universe with an original story from acclaimed series writer Kinoko Nasu (of Fate/stay night fame), Fate/EXTELLA features a diverse cast of 16 playable “Servants” – ancient warriors of legend and imagination, always at the beck and call of their Masters – who survived the Holy Grail War that took place on the Moon. In a future watched over by the all-powerful lunar super computer, “Moon Cell Automaton,” these champions now battle for dominance over this digital realm, known as “SE.RA.PH.” This story takes place after the events described in Fate/EXTRA, and depicts the world as it appears following that previous Holy Grail War.

Players will experience the story of Fate/EXTELLA from the independent perspectives of the three factions wrestling for control over SE.RA.PH. and face off against foes from a variety of Fate productions, including characters from Fate/EXTRA, Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero, Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order, in fast-paced combat. A new form change battle mechanic called Moon Crux debuts in this entry to match its series-first gameplay style, transforming the player-controlled Servants and granting them considerable powers that allow them to devastate enemies and take formidable challenges head-on. The game will contain the original Japanese voices, with the Nintendo Switch and Windows PC versions featuring game text in English, Japanese, Chinese (Traditional), and Korean.

Fate/EXTELLA is developed by Marvelous Inc. and is published in North America by XSEED Games. In addition to standard retail and digital formats for the Nintendo Switch version, the game is available on the PlayStation®4 and “PSVita” systems in a limited Noble Phantasm Edition bundle, which contains a 7.5” by 6.3” hardcover art book featuring over 100 pages of high-quality artwork and backstory from the Fate/EXTELLA universe, a pack of sixteen collectible 3” by 5” cards depicting each of the game’s Servants, and a 24” by 17” cloth poster, all housed in a custom collectible box. The PlayStation®4, “PSVita” system and Nintendo Switch versions of this title have been rated “T for Teen” by the ESRB. The Windows PC version of the game is not rated by the ESRB.

OpenIV Restored, Though Return to Liberty City Cancelled

Today brings good news for Grand Theft Automodding! OpenIV has been able to work out their issues with Rockstar and Take-Two. The development team will be able to continue their decade long project as it was. The team has insisted that OpenIV has never interfered with Grand Theft Auto Online and never will, thus making it compliant with Rockstar’s modding policy. The return of OpenIV in its original state is vindication for the OpenIV team.

Unfortunately, it is not a complete victory. The Return to Liberty City project that looked to import Grand Theft Auto IV’s Liberty City to Grand Theft Auto V has been canned as Rockstar has deemed the project to be in violation of their modding policy. The needs of the Return to Liberty City project was driving development on OpenIV, so the team is currently reevaluating the development road map of OpenIV itself.

Overview

Beacon Academy, once a safe place for human and Faunus students from around the world, has fallen. Ozpin was killed during the attack by the White Fang, or rather, its emerging extremist faction. After briefly returning home, Ruby left her older sister and father in order to trek to Mistral. She is joined by Ren, Nora and Jaune, whom are unable decide whether ‘JNRR’ or ‘RNJR’ is a better team name for them, and the group runs into Qrow along the way. Elsewhere, Weiss becomes increasingly frustrated at the way in which her father is running the Schnee Dust Company, Blake returns to her home on the island of Menagerie and Yang is given a new, mechanical arm to replace the arm lost during the fall of Beacon.

Story

A fearsome villain named Salem orders her underlings to do her bidding. Under her command is Cinder, who is almost mute after having received the full amount of the Fall Maiden’s power. Although only one of her underlings shows their face in the outside world this time, they all remain a major threat, as does the White Fang’s extremist faction. Both of these groups of villains are largely operating in the shadows now, allowing Ruby and her friends from Beacon Academy to have somewhat of a reprieve from fighting people. On their journey, they encounter many villages that have been abandoned or destroyed, but a Grimm is never far away. After helping one surviving village out and receiving some support in return, they are on their own. The situation appears more and more bleak as they get closer to Mistral, but their teamwork and the sudden appearance of Qrow gets them through the difficult stages of their journey. Unfortunately, the Grimm and one of Salem’s henchmen, who has been sent to capture Ruby as revenge for taking Cinder’s left eye, are not their only problems.

Jaune has many questions to ask Qrow when he has the chance, and he is unable to truly let go of Pyrrha as he trains to become stronger and more useful to his friends. Ren and Nora have their own problems as well, which are revealed when they come face to face with their collective past. The two have always been an interesting couple, but the exact nature of their relationship has been something of a mystery until now. They are childhood friends, although they did not meet under the happiest of circumstances. Nora evidently did not have a happy childhood, directly contrasting with Ren’s experiences with his loving parents. Their devotion towards each other is explained through a depiction of a horrible event that occurred in their village a long time ago, making it possible to see them and their relationship in a whole new light. There are numerous people and monsters to be fearful of in Remnant, but people like Ren and Nora are still able to overcome their fears and protect what is important to them, and seeing them remain strong is a wonderful thing to see.

Team RWBY has been split up across Remnant, but all four of its members are doing their best to keep going. Weiss has returned to the Schnee family’s mansion, but does not approve of her father’s conduct. She may have initially come across as a stuck-up rich kid, but she has developed into a thoughtful person who is able to see what is wrong with the world around her. It will be interesting to see where that knowledge takes her in the future. She is unable to accomplish much at this point, however she does have the courage to do whatever it takes to escape her father’s controlling and dictatorial will. Blake’s parents, ex-members of the White Fang, are loving and caring unlike Weiss’ father, and even put up with Sun to a certain extent after he follows Blake and imposes himself on her and then her parents. She cannot stand the thought of people being hurt because of her, and chooses to internalise that emotional pain. Her home village is otherwise a mostly happy place; Menagerie is a small island inhabited by the Faunus. Some see it as a reminder of the segregation of humans and Faunus, while others simply see it as a peaceful island. It is unclear exactly where in the world her journey will take her next, but her contemplative character development provides a strong contrast with Weiss’ external struggles and Ruby’s seemingly perpetual fights against the Grimm and her fights against bad people. Like Blake, Yang has a supportive family. Her father does whatever he can to help Yang train so she can be stronger when it is her time to fight, and her ability to bounce back is remarkable. It is evidently going to be a while before Team RWBY is reunited, but their individual journeys are some of the most compelling parts of this volume and the series as a whole.

Visuals

While Japanese animation studios largely and consistently fail to produce smooth 3D animation, with the notable exception of Square Enix, Rooster Teeth continues to prove itself as a leader in 3D animation. An extraordinary amount of detail can be seen in every shot, from the diverse settings to the unique characters. RWBY looks even better throughout this volume too; this is western anime at its finest. The fight sequences are consistently well-choreographed, and there are plenty of them to enjoy. Furthermore, the characters are expressive with their body language and their facial expressions. The world of Remnant is well-crafted; from desolate mountains to ruined villages to an island utopia, a significant amount of detail can be seen in every shot.

Audio

Western animated series are not typically known for featuring orchestral pieces, but RWBY is once again an exception. Emotions run high in volume four, and the music underscores those emotions perfectly without missing a single beat. It is as brilliant as it is real; Jeff Williams’ score feels like a natural extension of the story rather than literal background music that is immediately forgettable. The voice acting continues to bring the characters to life, so this is a series that is at least as good to hear as it is to watch.

Extras

Rooster Teeth knows how to entice fans to pick up a copy of one their DVDs and Blu-rays; hours of extras are included. If you want to learn more of the history of Remnant and its peoples, the “World of Remnant” shorts will satisfy that interest. If behind-the-scenes features are what you are looking for, this release also has you covered. To top it all off, a lenticular card is included inside the case. It features a clean version of the cover art for volume four on one side and a picture of Ruby’s scythe on the other.

Overall

If the first three volumes are to be considered as Act I of RWBY, this is just the introduction to Act II. An introduction that runs for roughly three hours and eight minutes sounds like it would be slow and dull on paper, but in this case, it is effective at building anticipation for the next chapter of the story. Despite originally airing as significantly shorter episodes, volume four is worth watching as a movie. It presents multiple concurrent plot-lines that feature brilliant writing, setting up what is sure to be an exciting continuation of the story of Ruby Rose and her friends as they try to save Remnant one person at a time. The voice acting, music and animation are about as perfect as it gets with western productions.
