Video Review

Overview

Ubisoft is bringing some of the biggest changes to the main Assassin’s Creed franchise this year with Assassin’s Creed Origins. The game is reimagining the long running franchise as an action RPG, introducing character levelling, equipment, and a brand-new combat system. Bucking the trend of increasingly modern settings, Assassin’s Creed Origins is going to the birth of the Brotherhood in Ptolemaic Egypt.

Story

Assassin’s Creed Origins is set in Ancient Egypt. The glory days of the Old Kingdom is long over. Now, the Greeks have established their own kingdom based in Egypt after the death of Alexander the Great. Ptolemy XIII now sits in the throne, but is resorting to violence and thuggery to maintain hold. Cleopatra and the Romans are chomping at the bit to pry the throne from the weak Ptolemy XIII, but in the shadows lurk a mysterious organization pulling the strings to ensure Ptolemy XIII stays in power. Here, last Medjay Bayek and his wife Aya carve their bloody path of vengeance and look to save the people of Egypt.

Choosing to tell the story of how the Brotherhood of Assassins first formed is the perfect backdrop for Ubisoft’s major gameplay changes to the long running series. By going back in time before the Brotherhood even existed, the developers have created a fresh start both story and gameplay wise. The game is presented in a way that anyone who has missed the last few Assassin’s Creed titles or is completely new to the series can enjoy the game or even get caught up to the general plot line of the series if they so please. The writing in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood is excellent. The plot line is interesting, starting from a personal vendetta and blossoming into a battle for the soul of Egypt. The dialogue is sharp, and the characters are interesting. The setting is incredibly vibrant and a lot of attention has been paid to create an accurate depiction of Ptolemaic Egypt.

Gameplay

Assassin’s Creed: Origins is the biggest revamp to the series to date, turning the game into a full-blown action RPG. Bayek now levels up with experience earned from actions like killing enemies and completing quests. Each level awards players with a skill point that can be spent in one of three skill trees specializing in ranged/stealth, combat, and tools. The skill trees are well balanced with some good lateral options that link later game skill trees together. Additionally, Bayek can equip weapons and shields he loots or buys. Clearly inspired by Ubisoft’s Far Cry titles, Bayek’s base stats can be improved by spending raw materials to upgrade his equipment. Raw materials are acquired by dismantling old weapons, hunting, or ambushing enemy caravans. While the game does have microtransactions in the form of loot boxes, I feel the game offers enough opportunity to acquire and upgrade loot. During my testing of the game, I did not feel any pressure to buy loot boxes to try to keep up.

The stealth mechanics remain largely the same. Assassin’s Creed: Origins is a modern stealth title where the player is the predator stalking from the shadows instead of being the prey hiding in the darkness. The stealth system feels fluid as stealth is toggled on and off with a press of a button. While the game can be played almost entirely in stealth with the correct skills unlocked, the basic stealth toolkit is more than enough for even the clumsiest player to at least position themselves to initiate combat from stealth.

Combat is the other target of Ubisoft’s rework of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Instead of an animation based combat system, everything is based on hitboxes. The new combat system feels fluid and responsive. The hitbox system feels like more input and skill is required from the player, making combat more fun than the animation linked style from previous games. The addition of a wide variety of weapons means players will find a combat style that suits them. Switching from bow to melee weapon and back again is totally smooth, and the multiple short range bows make it a viable strategy. While stealth is still a big part of the game, the new revamped combat is meaty enough that its possible to drop stealth almost entirely and run through the game like a wild barbarian.

The level design is excellent. The main mission objectives have a good amount of variation, especially with the naval combat. The side missions tend to be a little on the repetitive side though, as most involve running off to some corner of the map and assassinating a target. The collectibles that litter every open world title return in Assassin’s Creed: Origins, but they are a lot less of a chore compared to other games as they reward players with loot.

The parkour system that made the original Assassin’s Creed famous returns in Assassin’s Creed: Origins. While I have not played a main Assassin’s Creed title since Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, I find Origins to be much smoother than the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 era titles since almost all surfaces can be climbed. The added bonus is that the walls are visually more realistic as they are no longer littered with handholds.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins implements enough changes to the game that it could become an entirely new open world franchise for Ubisoft. The updates are a much-needed breath of fresh air to the series that has become more of a steady staple in recent years. While the changes aren’t worthy of a full reboot on its own, the changes modernize the title into a fast paced and fluid game that moves seamlessly from mounted combat, to stealth, to (bow) shooter, to melee hack ‘n slash. The beefy skill system helps personalize the game, making players a little more emotionally invested in a Bayek that is moulded in their style. While the core of Assassin’s Creed: Origins remains the same, the delivery is fresh and modern.

Visuals

Assassin’s Creed: Origins is a gorgeous game. The art style brings Ancient Egypt to life, with much of the game looking like it was torn out of art history textbooks. Graphically, Assassin’s Creed: Origins is a great display of what a cutting-edge game looks like. With the graphic settings cranked up, the game looks very realistic thanks to its sharp textures, solid animations, and detailed models. My only complaint with the graphics is that some of the horse riding animations are a touch too slow compared to the model’s movement speed, making the horse look slightly unnatural.

All is not perfect though. On the PC, the game is a pig for resources. While the system requirements are already quite high for the PC, there is still some optimization left to be done. The game happily gulps down all available CPU power. There are a variety of explanations, with the official line saying it’s a bug that will be addressed in a future patch. Either which way, patches and driver updates are currently coming out fast and furious, with more on the horizon.

Audio

Assassin’s Creed: Origins delivers a solid audio performance. The sound effects are all top notch. The music is excellent. The voice acting is of high quality, as expected from an AAA title. My only gripe is some of the minor lines are reused a bit too often. The hippodrome is one of the major offenders, with only five or six lines that are played on repeat.

Overall

Assassin’s Creed: Origin is a fantastic new direction for the long running series. The transition to open world action RPG/stealth hybrid adds a modern touch to the game and ensures that the main Assassin’s Creed titles stays relevant for another decade. The game does struggle with some minor audio/visual issues and is still in need of some optimization on the PC, but the excellent new direction for the series combined with the solid story makes it worth toughing it all out.

WARFRAME PLAINS OF EIDOLON COMING TO PLAYSTATION 4 AND XBOX ONE NOVEMBER 14

Major New Direction Opens Digital Extremes’ Cooperative Action Game to Novices and Offers Experts Lofty New Challenges

LONDON, ON – November 8, 2017 – Independent game developer and publisher Digital Extremes is ready to bring a whole new way of playing to its cooperative online action game, Warframe®. With Plains of Eidolon’s release hitting PlayStation®4 and Xbox One on Tuesday, November 14, Digital Extremes’ new Open Zone design proposes a vast new Landscape packed with exploratory daytime activities and towering night-time battles unlike anything Warframe players have seen before. Recently released on PC to a phenomenal reception that saw the game nearly double its player numbers, PlayStation®4 and Xbox One players will get their chance to experience the free to play expansion, Plains of Eidolon, starting November 14.

https://www.youtube.com/user/PlayWarframe

At night, only experienced Tenno will have a chance at defeating the towering Eidolon.

In Plains of Eidolon, players will discover a brand new experience vastly different from the procedurally generated tilesets they’ve come to know. For the first time in Warframe, players will see exquisitely lit vistas with an ongoing day/night cycle. During the day, Tenno (players’ in-game name) will have the freedom to seek missions from colorful vendors in the makeshift colony of Cetus, including as many as 50 other players with which to socialize.

Outside town, solo or in squads of up to four, players can freely explore the Plains. Filled with stunning lush hillsides, busy lakes and rivers inhabited by underwater creatures, and hidden cave systems, the Plains offer mini-games such as spearfishing and mining to gather resources, or engage players in heroic land and air battles — using the reworked Sky Archwing — against an ever-belligerent Grineer presence.

Best of all, daytime activities are available to all players of any experience. But once night falls, enemies scatter and hide as the Plains are haunted by towering Sentients. Summoned by a mysterious force, the towering Spectral Sentient known as the Teralyst Eidolon ascends from the waters and threatens all living things in its path. What will it take for your team to defeat it?

Additional key features include:

  • Debut of the Deadly Warrior: Witness the introduction of the 34th Warframe, Gara, who manipulates glass to fracture the resolve of her enemies.
  • New Weapons and Reinforcements: Gara wields a new arsenal of powerful weapons, including: Astilla that shoots slugs that explode on impact; Volnus, which deals a large amount of damage and can beat enemies to a pulp; and Fusilai, stealthy glass shurikens pierce through flesh and armor. Reinforcements include Argonak, the Grineer rifle uses an advanced laser sighting system and is deadly in both single fire and automatic modes; Krohkur, a hooked blade that reward critical hits to those skilled enough to strike with finesse, and the Dual Krohkur, which doubles the battlefield butchery.
  • Fashionista: Indulge your Fashion Frame sensibilities with the Virago Helmet and Gara’s new signature Hyalus Syandana.
  • Focus 2.0: Experience the reintroduction of the Operator-Warrior Focus Rework 2.0. This new system changes the Skill Tree to be more combat-focused, enabling you to equip your Operator with distinct Weapons and Armor found deep in the Caves of the Plains.
  • And More! Misc updates include the Mag Deluxe Skin, Deluxe Tonfa, and Deluxe Syandana, resource, decoration and weapon collecting and ’Stone Fish’ collecting, and more Mods and Stances.

A few bytes of history, Sierra classics restored only on GOG.com

A few bytes of history, Sierra classics restored only on GOG.com

Rise of the Dragon • Heart of China • Conqueror A.D. 1086

NOV 8 – Take a few bytes of gaming history with GOG.com, the digital game store where the oldies come to play.

Today, three productions from the Sierra & Dynamix back catalog return, including two legendary Jeff Tunnell adventures (designer for Incredible Machines, Willy Beamish, and Betrayal at Krondor) – fully restored for with modern computers, exclusively on GOG.com:

Rise of the Dragon

With its noir cyberpunk setting, the Blade Runner inspirations are undeniable and that’s a good enough reason to not pass this one by. Furthermore, the story-heavy gameplay and stylish art set the stage for years of unforgettable Sierra adventures, making Rise of the Dragon an influential release and noteworthy experience even today.

Heart of China

A product of its time through and through, this 1991 adventure plays like an interactive-comic trip through an admittedly outmoded depiction of 1930s China. According to Computer Gaming World, “Heart of China is everything a good adventure movie should be: fast-paced, tense, ingenious, witty, varied of locale and light of plot. Above all, it is entertaining.” It was labeled one of the 50 best computer games ever by PC Format in 1991.

Conqueror A.D. 1086

Fast-forward a few years to 1995, and travel back to medieval Europe. Conqueror A.D. 1086 is a blend of strategy, management, and a sprinkle of action – taking you from but a child, to conqueror of lands or slayer of dragons.

All three Sierra classics are available now, exclusively on GOG.com.

Expansive DLC Coming Soon; Day-One Update Adds Japanese Audio Option

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– In just a few weeks, Nintendo Switch owners will leave the familiar behind and enter the fantastical world of Alrest – a world full of living lands known as Titans and the fabled paradise of Elysium. To get fans ready for the Dec. 1 launch of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 game, Nintendo presented a deep dive into elements of the massive game, including the vast environments, battle system and characters. This special Nintendo Direct presentation also revealed upcoming paid DLC, a fun cross-promotion with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, as well as free DLC available to download on launch day that will allow players to also play the game with Japanese audio and English subtitles.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is next in the series following the original acclaimed RPG that launched for Wii in 2012. This sequel features new characters and worlds, with an expanded battle system that will still feel familiar to fans of the first game. (Photo: Business Wire)

“With Xenoblade Chronicles 2, we are giving fans yet another engaging adventure that can only be found on Nintendo Switch,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “This sequel is perfect for playing at home or while traveling during the busy holiday season.”

To view the Nintendo Direct video in its entirety, visit http://xenobladechronicles2.nintendo.com/direct/.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is next in the series following the original acclaimed RPG that launched for Wii in 2012. This sequel features new characters and worlds, with an expanded battle system that will still feel familiar to fans of the first game. In Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Blades are artificial lifeforms that bond with Drivers to lend them their weapons and powers in battle. Main character Rex is a Driver and Pyra is a Blade. To help familiarize fans with main character Rex before the game launches, a new Side Quest will be available via a free update in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game for both Nintendo Switch and Wii U systems, in which players will be able to obtain a Rex costume starting on Nov. 9.

In and out of battle, Blades have a wide array of support abilities. While adventuring, these abilities might increase the number of items that can be collected, open up new paths to explore or initiate other special effects. When players fight alongside their chosen Blade, they might trigger effects that protect the Driver, strengthen attacks and so forth. Abilities differ from Blade to Blade, so selecting different Blades adds to the strategy of battle.

Blades are just one form of life that players will encounter while journeying on the backs of the mighty Titans. In the vast world of Alrest, players will discover both peaceful and aggressive wildlife of all shapes and sizes wandering among giant plains, winding caverns, frozen kingdoms, scorched earth and sandy beaches. If players manage to defeat certain Unique Beasts, a tombstone will be left behind to commemorate the creature and allow players to relive those battles for additional rewards.

While traveling the massive world of Alrest, players will run into shining spots called Collection Points – which give players the opportunity to pick up valuable items or dive under the clouds to salvage hard-to-find treasures – or special landmarks that players can transport to at any time. Alrest is also teeming with bustling cities. From shopping districts to residential quarters, each Titan has its own unique layout and atmosphere.

Fans who want to expand their epic adventure can pre-purchase an Expansion Pass for the game in Nintendo eShop beginning today or pre-order it from select retailers shortly at a suggested retail price of $29.99. With this pass, players can enjoy DLC as it releases between the launch of the game and fall 2018, starting with quests and support items, and eventually including a challenge Battle Mode where they can face powerful enemies. This DLC will even include an additional adventure with a new side story set in the world of Elysium. Details about individual elements of the Expansion Pass will be released in the future.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch system on Dec. 1 at a suggested retail price of $59.99. The same day, the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Edition Nintendo Switch Pro Controller will launch at a suggested retail price of $74.99. Launch day will also see the release of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Special Edition. This special version includes the game, a beautifully illustrated hardbound art book filled with 220 pages of concept designs and artwork of the characters, landscapes and objects from the game, a sound-selection CD of many of the game’s memorable music tracks, and a special metal case containing the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 game card at a suggested retail price of $99.99. The ‘Dragon of the North’ DLC follows on from William’s valiant struggle in the main game, opening up the region of Oshu and introducing terrifying new enemies, weapons, armour, ninja skills, magic and Guardian Spirits.

‘Defiant Honour’ moves the narrative to the Osaka region and focuses on one of the defining battles of late Sengoku era introducing new key characters, weapons, equipment, enemies, Guardian Spirits, an even more challenging difficulty level and new trophies.

Finally, ‘Bloodshed’s End’ adds a further three main missions, nine side quests and a twilight mission concluding William’s journey.

Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon Review

Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon

Publisher: Koei Tecmo
Platforms: Switch, PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), PC
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $59.99 USD – Available Here $89.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

For the most part GUST has been known to develop games that are on the lighter side of things, often allowing players to enjoy the journey and interacting with as many characters as possible along the way. About a year and a half ago the developer tried their hands with something a bit darker in nature with Nights of Azure and saw a mild level of success from the game and now here we are with Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon. With a number of new mechanics and a brand new storyline, is this entry in the series worth your time?

Story

Set some time after the events of the first game the history remains mostly the same, so for those who may be jumping in now, a demonic being called the Nightlord being defeated only to spread its dangerous essence called Blue Blood throughout the land. Anything touched by this blood became, whether it be human or animal, became a fiend that would terrorize the land. In an attempt to put a stop to the fiends, the Curia organization was born and has since worked to prevent such evil from ever rising again.

A female agent by the name of Aluche is given the task of guarding her childhood friend Liliana, who is now a priestess of the order, to the Curia but it is here they find out that only a horrible fate will await the pair. To put a stop to the new evil, known as the Moon Queen, an existence called the Bride of Time must be sacrificed and Liliana is the one who has been selected as the bride. Unprepared for such a mission, the pair set out but It isn’t long before another friend from their past by the name of Ruenheid appears to inform them that there is another possibility to that the Curia speaks of, but all that is for naught as the party is beset by none other than the Queen herself.

After being slain in combat, the game takes a new turn as Aluche awakens from her death to find that she is being cared for by the strange Doctor Camilla who informs her that, in an effort to revive her, Aluche is now a half-demon as a demonic heart now beats within her chest. To make matters worse, since her death the location of both Liliana and Ruenheid have been lost. As such, Aluche sets out with a tainted power in an attempt to save her friends and the world, no matter what route she must take.

There is a certain problem that arises when you create a storyline that thrives when you interact with the cast and learn little bits about them and enjoy the service that is provided as your relationship grows and hamper it with something as frustrating as a time limit. Gust is no stranger to placing time restrictions on story events as the majority of the Atelier franchise featured such a system but nowhere did it feel more restricting as in Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon.

You see, as you advance the story you can take part in various sub-plots and raise your affection level with the numerous “Lilies” as your female companions are called in the game but thanks to a strict time limit and other mechanics, you’ll often be limited in these relationships to a rather frustrating level. The core storyline itself is fairly well handled and offers some unique little twists here and there but don’t expect anything to really jump out of the story outside of the aforementioned character interactions.

Gameplay

In many ways Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon plays similar to its predecessor as players will find that their home base is Hotel Eterna where Aluche can speak with her Lily companions, purchase and sell items and equipment, take a dip in a bathing suit, or even have a cup of hot chocolate with your companions. This is also where players will be able to use accumulated Blue Blood to power up Aluche and raise her levels.

For the most part, players will be spending their time outside of Hotel Eterna and taking part in field missions where Aluche will battle against enemies and try to complete as many tasks possible within a limited time frame. You see, thanks to Aluche not being accustomed to her new body there is only so much time that she can spend out in a field before having to return to Eterna and get some rest. To make things worse, players are given a second time limit where every time Aluche returns to rest, a night passes and once the moon grows completely dark, the game comes to an end. This means that not only are players limited in actual exploration but they are also limited in how long they can explore before worrying about advancing the storyline and returning the moon to its previous phase, making players have to often make sacrifices in an attempt to see as much of the story as possible without risking a game over screen.

That being said, the actual combat isn’t that difficult to master as Aluche controls in similar fashion to a standard hack and slash title where she can unleash various light and heavy attack combinations. To change things up this time the party system has been revised and the Servan system has also been made a bit more limited. Two Servans can still be brought with Aluche and a few of these can even change into different weapons for her to wield, but for the most part they are used to take advantage of various blockades that are inserted into levels.

These include areas that require a Servan capable of burning a path, or something else, and there will be instances you’ll need to worry about whether you need strong fighting Servans or those capable of clearing an obstacle in an attempt to avoid having to return to Eterna and lose your available exploration time, potentially ruining a chance to complete a limited mission. Thanks to this, actually trying to complete as many side missions and Lily interactions as possible is something of a pain that is hard to be annoyed by.

The other change to the party system in Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon is that Aluche can now be accompanied by a Lily, one of the female companions who join her on her mission. The Lilies’ AI can be given four different patterns to follow though thanks to how certain elements tend to play out, you’ll usually want them to stay focused on the enmy you are attacking. This is thanks to “Double Attacks” and “Revenge Attacks” that happen when Aluche and a Lily attack the same enemy at the same time or damage an enemy that hurt one of the pair.

Whenever this happens a tension gauge is filled and special skills can be activated. These skills vary depending on what Lily you have assisting you but they range from small buffing abilities or small scale attacks to large area of effect attacks capable of completely wiping out an enemy force. With these abilities growing stronger as your bond with a Lily is increased, players are encouraged to strengthen the Aluche’s relationship with these characters, though don’t expect most combat encounters to be too difficult even with an unfamiliar partner as most encounters, even some boss battles, can be incredibly easy on the Normal difficulty setting, so you will likely wish to avoid the suggested Easy difficulty unless you happen to be entirely new to action RPGs.

Visuals & Audio

The aesthetic from the first entry in the series remains intact in the sequel here but that isn’t a bad thing as these unique designs are not only quite detailed but incredibly gorgeous. The character designs for most of the main cast come in a wide array of styles, though be prepared for even the basic clothing designs to be fan-service heavy, and basically every character has a swimsuit design as well so be prepared for that too. The environments that Aluche travels through and the enemies that you battle against are fascinating and feature quite a bit of detail so even though you may revisit areas a few times, you’ll never feel bored retreading territory.

It is worth noting that this release of the game comes with only the original Japanese voice track. This works well for the most part as the voice actresses fit their roles well here and the subtitles do a solid job keeping up with the dialogue without any noticeable issues like previous Koei Tecmo releases. The soundtrack also features a wide array of music that fits the theme and aesthetic of the game perfectly, making any venture into the battlefield a treat when you aren’t rushing from place to place.

Overall

Keeping the same gorgeous aesthetic and theme from the first game Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon makes enough changes to the game’s combat mechanics to keep things feeling fresh and offers a decent enough storyline with highly enjoyable character interactions that will keep players engaged. The issue being that despite its improvements, the combat remains mostly simple in nature and the timer is far more of an issue than it should be. As such, while Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon may not bring too much to the table for newcomers, fans of the original will be pleased with the improvements and the emphasis on relationships in this entry.
