CLOSED BETA REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR DAEDALIC ENTERTAINMENT’S TEAM-FOCUSED RTS A YEAR OF RAIN

Second playable faction showcased in the Undead Champs Tournament, which is running now until the grand finale on September 28

HAMBURG, Germany Sept. 5, 2019 — Publisher and developer Daedalic Entertainment has announced that registration is now open for the upcoming PC closed beta of the highly anticipated, team-focused real-time strategy game A Year Of Rain. Players who want to get firsthand experience before the game officially launches later this year can apply for beta access at https://beta.ayearofrain.com.

Daedalic recently revealed A Year Of Rain’s second playable faction — the Restless Regiment. An army of bloodthirsty, unliving warlords, soldiers, beasts and souls under the mindless obedience or zealous devotion of Lady Llorona, the Restless Regiment is a force to be reckoned with in battle, fueled by a singular purpose and torment.

To give fans a first impression of this new faction, Daedalic has set up the Undead Champs Tournament. Four teams, among them RTS players from TKA E-Sports and Berliner eSports Club e.V., are fighting for top standing before the grand finale on September 28 at 19:00 CEST. Matches take place every week and are streamed live on Twitch at www.twitch.tv/wardiii, with the first VODs available to view now. More information about the tournament and videos of every match are now available at www.ayearofrain.com/en/news/undead-champs-2019.html.

A Year Of Rain combines classic real-time strategy elements with a strong focus on teamplay and hero units. The game’s co-op campaigns and online and offline modes are designed with a team of two players in mind. The classic 2v2 skirmish mode is being developed for competitive matches from the very start. Meanwhile, the “Against All Odds“ mode is an innovation in the genre, where two lone heroes face two entire armies.

River City Girls Review

River City Girls

Developer: WayForward
Publisher: Arc System Works
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, Xbox One (Reviewed), PlayStation 4, PC
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $29.99 – Available Here

Overview

Throughout the 90s we saw the side scrolling brawler explode as a genre as nearly every franchise wanted a piece of the arcade fueled pie, whether it was an X-Men game, Simpsons, and many more the beat-’em ups flocked to arcades and still live on as fond memories since most of these games have moved on from the genre. That isn’t to say that it has been forgotten however and the Kunio-kun series, best known as River City in the West, was there at the beginning and has returned with a new spin-off focusing on the girls this time around in the form of River City Girls. After taking a few years off and now developed by WayForward, is River City Girls a beat-em up that scratches that classic arcade itch?

Story

Misako and Kyoko aren’t really having a great day as the pair spend their time sleeping through a lesson in detention, which is odd because Kyoko doesn’t even attend that school. Things get worse however when the pair receive a text message that shows their boyfriends, Kunio and Riki (the standard heroes of the River City games) being kidnapped. Not ones to be held down by things like rules, gangs of other rebellious students, and especially the teachers, the pair bust out of detention and hit the streets to track down their boyfriends.

WayForward has crafted an excellent and humorous tale that sees this pair of girls traveling through numerous areas in the city all while brawling against enemies ranging from standard school thugs, corrupt cops, and even masked wrestlers though there are some even stranger enemies that appear as well. The two girls, even while playing solo, make various remarks about the things they see throughout the story as the game progresses and interact with numerous characters that are both new to the franchise as well as some old returning faces. These familiar faces are great callbacks to past games in the Kunio-kun series and even a couple of guest characters are here as well.

This creates a fun and entertaining storyline that holds together rather well partly due to how humorous and charming the cast of characters are, though be prepared for a rather sudden feeling ending that doesn’t feel like it works the best.

Gameplay

While at its heart River City Girls is a side-scrolling brawler, it is actually a bit of a blend of that plus some light RPG mechanics and adventure as well. This is primarily due to the fact that while players will still need to travel through various screens to progress, any previous level in the game can be revisited at any time and progress is generally only halted behind a boss battle before allowing players to progress to the next section of the city. This includes allowing various shortcuts to be opened up between areas and the ability to use a bus stop to travel to other locales in a form of fast travel.

At its heart however this brawler still sticks true to its roots as both Kyoko and Misako boast a strong arsenal of moves that grow the longer the player keeps going through the game. In fact, thanks to both characters having their own fighting style players will have a blast playing through the game as either fighter and being able to swap any time you load into the game again is a nice touch, though character levels are independent from one another. Initially both characters start with a fairly limited set of moves and move a bit on the slower side but as they defeat enemies they gain experience as well as money. Leveling up provides a stat boost and can unlock additional moves right off the bat while other moves can then be learned from dojos scattered around the city.

Along those lines, it does mean that players can grind a little bit to either help make their fighter stronger or to pick up a piece of equipment they might find useful. This is where the aforementioned adventure style comes in a bit as there are numerous side-quests that the girls can accept that reward them with a bit of cash and experience when completed and simply retreading old areas respawns enemies so the more the player puts into River City Girls the more they end up getting back as the true combo potential for these fighters, including their special moves, really start to shine once a few of these moves are learned. Combat is also fleshed out a bit more by being able to pick up various weapons and use them until they break and occasionally enemies will beg for mercy. In this case that foe can then be recruited as a temporary ally that can be called in to perform a special attack until their health runs out.

Purchasing moves at these dojos requires money, which can also be used to purchase various bits of equipment ranging from different types of underwear that boost various weapon abilities or make-up to deal extra damage to certain foes, to pepper spray that earns the player additional rewards, and more as well as food that can either be used at the store for an immediate heal or carried in an inventory that grows larger as the girls level up.

It is worth noting that getting beaten down allows players to continue but does cost them some money, so investing some into carrying a few healing items around is a nice touch, especially against some tougher bosses. Speaking of bosses, players will encounter a wide array of unique enemies here and while we won’t get into any of their exact details to keep things a surprise, every fight has a unique mechanic built into it aside from simply punching/kicking the foe in the face.

Although the combat can feel fluid with some blows really packing a punch, especially when smashing enemies into a locked screen and causing it to vibrate, River City Girls can be a bit rough at times as it can be difficult to properly gauge a jump at times when there is the threat of fall damage and the game has a real habit for swapping maps during combat. This is due to the fact that the standard light attack button is the same as the button used to both pick up items as well as transition to the next stage. This means that if you happen to be brawling against enemies that either rush the girls when they enter the screen or near an exit, fighting with standard attacks will almost always throw you into another stage and reset any damage done to the foes. This is an annoyance that can be avoided by relying on heavy attacks or special moves when unlocked but the use of a seperate button would have been preferred here. It is also worth noting that while there is a New Game Plus mode once the game is completed that offers some fun bonuses, there is no actual side content outside of the core game, not even a gallery of cutscenes or a way to re-listen to the soundtrack, which is disappointing simply due to how high quality both of these are.

Visuals & Audio

River City Girls features a great blend of pixel art and anime/manga styled artwork. Standard gameplay sees the girls exploring through a variety of gorgeously detailed areas of the city, all of which have their own unique feeling, battling against a solid variety of enemies. Each environment is filled with various NPCs and the bosses are quite unique both in design and their aforementioned fights. The design of every in-game character is quite detailed though there does seem to be a bit of an issue with their models vanishing a bit when certain grab moves are performed on them. It is also interesting to note that even though many enemy types feature alternate color schemes, the aforementioned mercy recruitment system often contains a few extra tidbits of information regarding some of the palette swaps.

When looking to purchase items Kyoko and Misako will encounter a wide-variety of eclectic shop owners all featuring unique background art and designs while the actual story segments are told through beautiful anime cut-scenes. All of this is accompanied by some very solid voice acting featuring a great voice cast and an absolutely amazing soundtrack. Generally a brawler could get away with standard background music but River City Girls goes that extra mile by not only featuring some great pieces of standard background music but also a large collection of tunes that feature full vocals, allowing players to beat down enemies to a great collection of music.

Overall

River City Girls puts a new spin on the Kunio-kun series of brawlers and delivers an amazing example of what the brawler genre is capable of when given plenty of love and given enough room to deliver solid humor alongside its great cast of characters. The story may falter a bit at the end and the screen transitioning can be an issue but River City Girls’ solid combat makes the game an absolute blast when played with a friend and just as great solo.

Gears 5 Review

Gears 5

Developer: The Coalition
Publisher: Microsoft
Platforms: Xbox One (Reviewed), PC
Release Date: September 10, 2019
Price: $59.99 USD – Available Here $99.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

Over the years the Gears of War franchise has managed to tell an original storyline over the course of an amazing trilogy plus a prequel to provide a little extra backstory and more recently the series even passed the torch to a younger generation of protagonists in Gears of War 4. Now three years later The Coalition has returned with a new entry in the series that packs plenty of changes to its campaign, dropped part of the title entirely, as well as refined its multiplayer even further. Have these changes made Gears 5 better or are they simply too far from the formula the series is known for?

Story

Those who may have missed out on the story told in Gears of War 4, or may have forgotten bits and pieces of it, won’t have to worry as the first thing Gears 5 does is provide a solid summary of events that took place in the form of a recap video before throwing players right into the new story. Some time has passed since the events of the previous game and while humanity has mostly gathered back together on Sera, the Swarm remain a constant threat to those survivors. As such the Marcus, JD, Del, and Kait are searching for the remnants of a Hammer of Dawn satellite in an attempt to bring the powerful weapon that once helped change the tide of the war back online. Though all the while Kait continues to struggle with headaches and nightmares that have plagued her since the previous game and must go on a journey to learn more about herself.

Oddly enough, while the Gears of War story campaigns rarely felt like they were telling something that could easily be spoiled outside of one or two major events, or featured plenty of worldbuilding details in general, Gears 5 makes a major change in that regards and going further into the actual plot beyond this point would be spoiling some rather large events. This can be seen as a rather impressive storyline improvement over the previous entry that only offered a handful of new plot details and while the original trilogy had its fair share of emotional moments, the character-drive storyline found in Gears 5 makes for an emotional journey that puts Kait almost entirely in the spotlight.

That isn’t to say that the other characters are pushed to the back, instead they play more of a supporting role this time around though Del also gets plenty of time to shine as he tends to spend the most time with Kait in the game. It is also worth noting that while previous Gears of War games still gave us bits of information about the backstory of Sera and the people who live on it and the adversities they faced, most of this info was drip-fed through collectibles and little mentions here and there. While collectibles are still very present in Gears 5‘s storyline the game also delves far deeper into the history of the world and its people than ever before.

To think that numerous pieces of information and some rather large twists to an already established storyline could come in the fifth entry of a series is a bit surprising but a pleasant one to say the least. Filling in various plot holes from past games as well as offering players a look at the darker history of the world these characters are pushed in a number of unique ways we haven’t seen since the emotional events surrounding Dom and there is even a choice to be made near the end of the story though what that may be is up to the player to find out. That being said, don’t expect a very solid ending as this time around Gears 5 adopts an ending that is very reminiscent of the whole “finish the fight” aspect of Halo 2 where it ends in a cliffhanger. This will almost assuredly be answered in the next entry but be prepared to feel a bit let down in that regard.

Gameplay

There are many games that have managed to master a certain style of gameplay and the Gears of War series has easily mastered the cover-based shooter and that continues to be the case in Gears 5. Players will find all of their favorite weapons returning with a few new weapons being added into the arsenal, such as a grenade launcher attached to a lancer, a massive spiked club for close encounters, and even a weapon with a massive clip that fires more accurately the longer it is shot before misfiring. Sliding behind cover, taking a few shots at an enemy, nailing an active reload, and popping back out to try and take down another enemy still feels as smooth as ever and the new multitude of weapons, including plenty of time with everyone’s beloved Swarm slicing chainsaw lancer, all pack plenty of punch making the game’s gunplay feel like it really packs a punch.

In the single player campaign not only can players choose to play the game solo but they can play with up to three other players, one taking on the role of the other NPC in the story and the other controlling their robotic companion Jack. Jack is a featured far more than any previous robot assistant in previous games as not only does he have a skill tree featuring a number of skills that can be used in the middle of a firefight to make things easier but he can also be upgraded in various ways. While playing through Gears 5‘s campaign players will not only find the aforementioned collectibles but also components that can then be used to unlock various upgrades to Jack’s abilities such as having a stunning blast having a larger radius or recharging quicker, or simply being able to take more damage. In single player these new skills are quite useful at times and open up a new way to tackle some challenges and if you’re playing with a full team of three, the Jack player will appreciate a more upgraded unit to play as.

Aside from Jack’s upgrades Gears 5 also offers another new change to the campaign that takes the game in another new direction. For long stretches of the game players will still find themselves taking part in gloriously over the top action set-pieces with intense firefights featuring both returning and new enemy types, but the middle of the game opens up to an extremely large level style that allows for a more free roam style of gameplay. Players will be able to explore these open maps with a wind powered ski-sled called a skiff and while it is entirely possible to simply head towards the marked objective exploration not only rewards the player with short side-quests that often result in new dialogue as well as collectibles but also a few weapon variations in the form of relic style weaponry that have additional bonuses stacked onto them. This open world style of exploration may seem a bit uneven compared to the usually tight and narrow style of gameplay that fans may be familiar with but it’s handled well enough and offers some unique moments and surprise encounters.

Outside of the campaign mode those who loved Gears of War for its multiplayer will find that the game has still retained most of its greatest modes and added a few new things to spice things up. Players will still have the traditional Versus gameplay featuring a number of different game types such as the amazing Arms Race, Dodgeball, Execution, Team Deathmatch, and more as well as a new Arcade Deathmatch. Arcade features players on both teams selecting characters that all have different starting weapons as well as weapons that can then be purchased using in-match currency earned for kills, executions, and pity streaks for dying a lot in a row. This Arcade mode actually does change up the gameplay a bit and can be a nice respite from some of the more standard competitive styles found in the normal modes, as such Versus continues to offer a little of everything and then some.

Horde mode returns as well with a few new changes though remains true to at its core. Players will work cooperatively with one another to survive against waves of increasingly difficult enemies with boss fights occuring every five stages. Depending on what character the player is using, and their role of being a scout, support, etc, will vary what they can acquire from the Fabricator using energy dropped from defeated enemies. Crafting an elaborate death tunnel filled with turrets, arc-lightning, and floor traps can be a great thrill but be prepared for a challenge as even a full team of five will have their mettle challenged on higher ranks even on the easier difficulty levels, of which there are now many to select from.

Finally the brand new Escape mode features up to three players at a time taking part in a survival match that pits them up against a wave of death chasing them from behind and their only hope for survival being behind an unknown number of Swarm. These Escape matches may take a bit to get used to but they really can nail down the feeling of having to struggle against enemies at times primarily due to the fact that not only do players have to keep moving as the gas bomb detonated near the start of the mode will kill them if they are caught up in it, but ammunition is also kept to a bare minimum. Stealth kills and scavenging for ammunition or utilizing a character’s specific special ability that has to recharge over time can be a real thrill and some fights can be real tense. In fact, when playing with a solid team this mode can easily be found as a favorite for those who enjoy survival style gameplay. That being said, the modes can feel a bit repetitive at times since there are only so many variants available at the moment though since players can create their own Escape maps, it will be interesting to see what the community can come up with.

Visuals & Audio

The Coalition had quite the task for themselves when it came to one-upping what players saw in Gears of War 4 but they’ve certainly managed to accomplish it here in Gears 5. Not only are the character models as detailed and varied as ever, with the core cast undergoing a few style changes throughout the campaign and of course in multiplayer but the environments found in the campaign are absolutely stunning to see. The Skiff travel sequences can be absolutely astounding to see and of course the combat can is just as visceral and meaty as ever, though the real highlights are the high-intensity setpieces that will be hard for anyone to forget.

One must also give the voice actors, all of whom have returned to reprise their respective roles with new characters fitting right in, a lot of credit as the emotional impact of a number of the story beats wouldn’t hit nearly as hard if it wasn’t for their great voice work here. Alongside the astounding voice cast the game features a number of great pieces of background music that feel great when accompanying an intense shootout as well as some more somber tracks used for exploration or during the aforementioned drama.

Overall

Gears 5 breathes a breath of fresh air into a franchise that didn’t even need it by expanding the scope of the storyline into a more emotional realm and delivering plenty of new pieces of information that reveal more about the world the game takes place in while also expanding the gameplay world a bit by featuring a few more open areas that are bookended by the straightforward action packed set piece filled firefights fans love. With the tightest gunplay to date with a few new ways to take the fight to the enemy Gears 5’s multiplayer mode also continues to excel at giving players a little something of everything to try, with the new Arcade and Escape modes being great additions to an already packed offering.

Calling all PUBG gamers to squad up and load up for Red Bull Fight or Flight powered by OMEN

Calling all PUBG gamers to squad up and load up for Red Bull Fight or Flight powered by OMEN

5 September, 2019 – Today registrations have opened for Red Bull Fight or Flight, the biggest PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS (PUBG) esports tournament for amateurs Australia has ever seen.

Red Bull Fight or Flight, a first-of-its-kind battle royale esports tournament powered by OMEN (HP’s purpose-built gaming range) and in collaboration with ESL, will challenge 4-person squads with custom PUBG settings, to see whether they will fight, or take flight to become the last team standing.

The unique in-game settings for Red Bull Fight or Flight are different to PUBG esports. The games will be fast-paced, lasting no longer than 15 minutes, with the playing field shrinking rapidly and causing more damage to you and your team. In addition, the loot spawns are much more concentrated and more frequent care packages offer better equipment. With qualifiers open to all gamers, Red Bull Fight or Flight will level the playing field for amateur and seasoned gamers alike and make for a fantastic viewing experience.

Qualifier events will take place at PAX Australia in Melbourne at the Red Bull and OMEN booth (11-13 Oct), online via ESL Play (18-20 Oct) and at Carriageworks in Sydney (2 Nov). The Grand Final will be held at Carriageworks in Sydney on the evening of 2 November in front of a live audience and streamed on Red Bull Twitch, giving wings to amateur players who will experience a taste of what it’s like to play on stage like a pro and a chance to win a prize pool valued at up to $45,000, including an all expenses paid trip to the PUBG Global Championship Grand Finals, taking place in Oakland, California, on November 23 and 24.

“At HP, we have long shared our users’ passion and love for gaming, supporting gamers with purpose-built OMEN technology that can make the difference between a chicken dinner or defeat,” said Ken Maher, Director Personal Systems at HP. “HP believes gaming is for all, so we’re excited to be partnering with Red Bull and empowering Australia’s best PUBG players to challenge themselves.”

“PUBG is such an exciting game because you could always be a moment away from being taken out – with the Red Bull Fight or Flight rules this effect is doubled,” said Kritikalmotion, one of Australia’s most prolific PUBG streamers.

“We’re constantly seeking unique experiences for our fans around the world, so we’re thrilled to be working with Red Bull to bring one of the largest amateur PUBG competitions to our community in Australia,” said Jeff Parker, Head of Central Events at PUBG Corporation. “The unique game settings we’ve devised are sure to keep things interesting and we’re looking forward to an amazing event series.”

To be one of the 12 squads to compete at the Red Bull Fight or Flight Grand Final, PUBG players over 18 years old can enter their 4 person squad into one of the following qualifier events:

  • Live Qualifier: Red Bull Fight or Flight and OMEN booth at PAX Australia in Melbourne, 11-13 October

Squads can register at the Red Bull and OMEN booth during PAX on a first come, first served basis. The winning squad on each day (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) will win flights and accommodation to the Red Bull Fight or Flight Grand Final in Sydney on the 2 November 2019 to compete.

  • Online Qualifier: Online via ESL Play, 18-20 October

Registrations will be taken online at ESL Play until 11:59pm AEST, 17 October, 2019 or until timeslots are full. Teams will battle their way through a tournament format to claim number 1 spot. The winning team from each of the three online qualifiers will win a $2,000 stipend to assist with travel and accommodation to attend the Grand Final in Sydney.

  • Last Chance Qualifier – Carriageworks in Sydney, 2 November

Registrations will be taken online until 11:59pm AEST, 1 November, 2019 or until spots have been filled. The top team from each group will advance into the final lobby, with the top six teams of the Last Chance Qualifier qualifying to the Grand Final.

The final twelve teams that have qualified for the Grand Final will compete in a five-map series on the Sanhok map, with teams earning points for both overall round placements, as well as eliminations. At the end of the fifth map, the team with the highest total points will be declared the winner.

Use the hashtag #RedBullFightorFlight on Twitter and other social media channels.

Top Development Talent Join Forces to Bring Rune Knights Large-Scale Fantasy Turn-based Strategy Game in the Battle to Conquer Runersia

TOKYO, JAPAN (Sept. 4, 2019) – Japanese videogame company, Happinet, is pleased to announce that Brigandine will make its return after 20 years with Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia exclusively on Nintendo Switch™ system. Scheduled for a Spring 2020 release worldwide, the turn-based strategy series set in a familiar fantasy world is brought to life by renowned talent including scenario writer, Kenji Terada (Batman: Dark Tomorrow, FINAL FANTASY I – III), art director and character designer, Raita Kazama (Puzzle & Dragons, Xenoblade Chronicles), and the homecoming of composer Tenpei Sato (Brigandine: Grand Edition, Disgaea 1 -5).

In Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia, six countries in the Continent of Runersia have waged a war to conquer and unify the land under one nation. Players decide how their legend will unfold by selecting a country and creating their army of Rune Knights, exploring over 40 base locations and encountering over 100 unique knights and 50 types of monsters as they progress across Runersia.

About Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia

In Runersia, a continent created by the Rune God, mana rains down endlessly. Eons ago, five Mana Stones were brought forth by this continent and passes through history alongside human nations, eventually embedding into special Brigandine equipment to create Rune Knights – special individuals who can wield the mana power and stones embedded into their armor to cast skills and magic as well as summon and control ancient monsters. Six Brigandine Countries of Runersia, each with conflicting ideals beliefs, histories, and faiths, are divided by Brigandines of Justice, Glory, Freedom, Sanctity, and Ego, while the sixth country exists without Brigandine. The goal is to win battles to expand their country’s influence until the entire continent of Runersia has been taken over by the player.

Featuring a Fantasy world conquest within the turn-based strategy genre, Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia will offer hundreds of hours of immersive gameplay in this stunning new campaign for conquest. Players choose one of six countries to assume the role of the ruler aiming to conquer Runersia, and command more than 100 Rune Knights throughout the six nations leading various monster troops of various dragons, ghouls, and fairies, into fierce battles on hexagonal grid maps in the tactical turn-based battle system.

Attendees will have chance to learn more about Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia during Tokyo Game Show (TGS), which takes place September 12 -15 at Makuhari Messe, in a video presentation at the Happinet booth. Additionally, fans can receive one of six posters featuring a ruler, designed exclusively for TGS, by Raita Kazama!
