Fort Triumph Review

Fort Triumph

Developer: CookieByte Entertainment
Publisher: All In Entertainment
Platform: Windows (Reviewed)
Release Date: 16 April 2020
Price: $24.99 USD/ $35.95 AUD – Available Here

Video Review

Overview

Fort Triumph has finally left Steam Early Access after spending over two years in the program. The game bills itself as a mix of Heroes of Might and Magic’s open world exploration and XCOM’s turn based strategy.

Story

Fort Triumph offers a decent sized campaign following four heroes on their epic adventure. The story is filled with a lovable cast of oddballs. The dialogue is well written with a good bit of wit. The humour mostly parodies the fantasy genre with a few smart jabs at modern society and some absurd humour for good measure.

Gameplay

Fort Triumph offers a full campaign and a skirmish mode. Separate skirmish modes are available for singleplayer and local co-op. The campaign is composed of multiple skirmish maps with special combat events. Each skirmish map serves as a single act in the story. While the story follows four heroes, players can have multiple parties of up to five heroes each.

The game is split into two main phases, the overworld and combat. The overworld is modeled after Heroes of Might and Magic where each player takes turns moving their parties around the map. Each player is based out of a fort. The fort is where players will buy upgrades for both their kingdom and their entire roster of heroes. Forts can be taken over by opposing parties of heroes, so players do need to protect their base by stashing a few heroes in reserve.

Scattered around the map are treasure guarded by enemies, random events, forts, and resource generation nodes. One day is represented by one turn, and players are limited to a certain number of steps per turn. At the end of the week, the monsters grow in strength. The system works well for the most part except for the small number of wasted steps a party will take if they interact with an enemy battle event but later decide to back out.

Fort Triumph is light on stats and equipment. The only choice a player can make when a character levels up is to choose from a random selection of three skills or upgrade existing ones. Artifacts offer a decent stat bump but are rarely found. Heroes are only able to equip one artifact or one consumable item at the start, but additional slots can be purchased at the local fort.

Combat is turn based strategy in the spirit of XCOM. Fort Triumph emphasizes both direct damage and environmental damage. Objects and units can be pushed and pulled around, causing damage on impact. A majority of the cover in the game is affected by physics, making cover a risky proposition against enemies who also have physics based abilities. The difficulty is slightly higher than average as characters tend to be squishy. Additionally, death is permanent, so losing a hero can be devastating. The game is more forgiving when it comes to permadeath as patient players willing to replay a mission can restart the mission or load an autosave.

I found the gameplay to be enjoyable. The developers have hit just the right spot in terms of difficulty that emphasizes strategy without being unnecessarily punishing. There is a decent amount of variety in the enemy composition that will make players adjust their tactics to survive. The level up system is done well as certain skills are rare and characters can sometimes learn a skill from another class. When combined with the fact there only three randomly selected skills offered for each level up, the four classes in the game does not feel limited at all. The campaign does feel a little tacked onto the skirmish mode mechanically speaking since each act is just a new skirmish, but it is an enjoyable way to see all the content in a cohesive manner.

The controls are decent for the most part. The game can be played entirely with the mouse though keyboard controls for camera movement makes things easier. The developers do a very good job keeping the mouse consistent, with left click handling neutral or cancel functions and right click for executing character actions. Targeting enemies can be a little finnicky when large objects are nearby, as it is very easy to click on the wrong target. The game did not ship with the ability to modify key binds but the developers have promised the feature will be added in a future update.

Visuals

Fort Triumph offers an enjoyable visual presentation. The art style is cartoony with lots of exaggerated features and bold colours. There’re a few nods to Shrek in the character design that fits in well. On the technical side, the graphical options are extremely slim. The bulk of graphical quality adjustment is handled by a single vague option.

Audio

The audio experience is solid. The soundtrack is the standard video game fare, providing a pleasant distraction-free accompaniment to the game. The sound effects are of high quality and have enough variation to prevent the game from feeling stale. There is no voice acting in the game, which is significantly better than terrible voice acting.

Overall

Fort Triumph is a solid game that does justice to the two franchises that inspired development. While there are some quality of life issues that need to be ironed out, fans of turn based strategic combat will enjoy this new take on the genre.

Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories Review

Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories

Developer: Granzella
Publisher: NIS America
Platforms: PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), PC, Switch
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $59.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

Few video games manage to release without issues but when it comes to Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories, it almost seemed like it would never see the light of day. Originally announced back in 2010 for the PlayStation 3, a devastating earthquake struck Japan in 2011 and, considering the title is focused around surviving during a massive string of earthquakes, the game was eventually cancelled by its original developer Irem only to be revived years later by a new owner in the form of Granzella. Now years later Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories has managed to be released during another significant problem sweeping the world, bringing at least a few unique points to light but is this disaster game worth checking out?

Story

Players begin with a customizable male or female character who has found themselves traveling to this city for the first time. While riding the bus through the city an emergency alarm is sent out just prior to an apocalyptic earthquake strikes the city, sending the bus crashing over onto its side. Once the player crawls from the wreckage they witness a city destroyed as paths are blocked by fire, collapsed buildings and roadways, and people scream while trapped under rubble. This serves as an outstanding first impression that can really nail home how horrific such an event might be and traveling around the initial devastation lets players get a glimpse at how various people may react to such a situation as NPCs can worry for their life or sit stunned while others are more concerned about being in a slight fender bender.

This type of storytelling holds up rather well through a lot of the game as players encounter tons of people in need of their help as well as plenty of odd situations as well adding some levity here and there; especially with some situations that were once outlandish seeming possible now. Unfortunately this does fall apart here and there. Not only does the tone of the game swing wildly at times during “quirky” scenes, especially in the latter half of the game, but there are numerous situations that players simply cannot interact with that seem strange. While playing players can come across a number of people who are wounded, trapped, or need help but can do nothing but glance at them, even if they might have tools that would help in that situation. In many cases this appears to simply be a way to force players forward rather than making them feel powerless and often is quite frustrating, especially in a few key situations.

It also doesn’t help that while Disaster Report 4 touts that this is the player’s story and provides a large number of choices ranging from dialogue spoken out loud to other survivors or internal thoughts about how they might handle a situation, nearly every one of these choices are simply there for flavor text and nothing else. A few interactions will result in various “moral” and “immoral” points being added to the player’s score, though even these can be inconsistent as obviously evil acts can be treated as positive while negative points can be given for taking down someone taking advantage of people, and some reappearing characters will react differently depending on how the player interacts with them as well but outside of one significant decision player choice does little to vary things up.

In fact, Disaster Report 4 often feels like a classic adventure game that requires players to interact with a specific item or situation to advance the story, whether they want to or not. Oddly enough, with the nature of having to survive in such a situation and seeing humanity at both its best and its worst, this style of storyline and writing, as odd as it can be at times, does make the game quite an engrossing one to play even if it raises a few eyebrows at times.

Gameplay

As mentioned before, Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories plays similar to a classic adventure game but mixes in some survival elements as well. Not only do players have a health meter that they have to keep an eye on but they will also grow hungry, thirsty, and have to go to the bathroom as well. Players will find backpacks in many areas that allow for a bit of customization as well as carrying useful supplies such as food, water, and health packs. Oddly enough rather than being able to scrounge from obvious sources of such items, players are generally left with only what the game specifically puts in their path here, leaving plenty of obviously full water bottles and food sitting without the ability to interact with it.

Along those same lines, players will need to watch their health as countless aftershocks will rock the city and can send the main character to the ground for a shocking amount of damage if they don’t properly brace themselves. Being close to fire or other hazards can also cause damage though most deaths will likely come from having a building or object come down right on top of the character after running the wrong way, though a generous checkpoint system alleviates most worries here. Stress can also build up though taking a quick breather at most save locations does help with that. Other systems, like crafting, only make an appearance for plot purposes so players don’t need to worry about that.

It is also worth noting that, as mentioned before, players can often find themselves left with no obvious sign of progression and are instead left to wander either hoping to trigger a scene that may only occur in a specific spot or after a certain period of time has passed. This is also compounded with the fact that the control system is a bit on the rough side and, even while jogging, the player character moves at a shockingly slow pace and can barely climb over a guard rail at times, let alone a waist high wall.

That being said, there are a ton of costumes ranging from standard clothes to absurd outfits to find throughout the game allowing players to embrace the crazy world in an even crazier outfit should they choose and compasses can come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, though these are usually only cosmetic changes a few outfits do spark some extra dialogue here and there, plus it does make for some rather interesting looking scenes to play out.

Visuals & Audio

With Disaster Report 4 originally being unveiled for the PlayStation 3 back in 2010 there are more than a few lingering issues that seem to persist through this final release. The character designs for unique characters are solid enough with plenty of the aforementioned costumes ranging from normal to goofy which is a nice touch and venturing into many destroyed areas for the first time can be quite shocking, especially during a collapse, but spending time in these areas quickly shows them for being rough looking and often shockingly empty despite the destruction. This emptiness then leads into some rather large frame rate drops that see the game stuttering heavily during populated scenes and even randomly from time to time despite there being almost nothing happening on screen at the time.

NIS America has released Disaster Report 4 in the West with only the original Japanese voice track which works quite well here as the company has made sure to provide ample subtitles for every bit of spoken dialogue, including the emergency broadcast app players can activate in-game. Although most player choices won’t play a big role in the plot there is plenty of voiced dialogue to match the player’s personality no matter how they play, be it a virtuous soul, someone who wants to take advantage of everyone, or even a bit of a creep.

Overall

The journey that Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories took to finally get released to consoles as well as the circumstances that see it being released now make it something of a disaster itself but that doesn’t hold it back from being a rather satisfyingly weird game to play thanks taking drama and absurd situations and mixing them together fairly well, especially in these times even if it is incredibly rough around the edges on a technical level.

World of Tanks Starts its 10th Anniversary Celebrations

To mark this milestone, World of Tanks invites its community of 160 million registered players to join the party!

April 22, 2020 – After a decade of entertaining commanders across the world, Wargaming is pleased to announce that World of Tanks is starting the official celebration of its 10th anniversary. Running across four months, the anniversary celebrations will give players a plethora of surprises to get involved in – including several exciting thematic activities, throwbacks and missions, culminating in a big event in August.

Since its inception 10 years ago, World of Tanks has released thousands of features, unleashed hundreds of events, launched 11 nations and 600 vehicles, and garnered over 160 million registered players globally in the process. Thanks to the ardent support of its close-knit community, the game has been recognized in other ways too, with 4 Golden Joystick award wins and a Guinness World Record for the most players simultaneously logged on to an MMO server.

Speaking of the anniversary and the party to come, Max Chuvalov, Publishing Director of World of Tanks said:

‘For the team and I, the past 10 years have allowed us to make more than a successful game – it has seen the formation of one big, global family. On behalf of the World of Tanks team, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to our players over the years. You’ve stuck with us through different stages of the game’s development and helped us to create one of the most impactful MMOs in gaming history. As a reward, we have prepared a lot of exciting activities and additions, things that will surprise and please you – all in celebration of 10 amazing years. And remember, together, we can continue to create amazing experiences. So, let the party begin!’

World of Tanks will be hosting exciting activities made up of five thematic Acts starting from April 21. These Acts correspond specifically to certain milestones within the game’s history; milestones that left their mark on commanders.

The first Act will start from April 21 through May 18.

Players will also have the chance to vie for prizes and earn Anniversary Coins that can be exchanged for valuable items and exclusive customizations in the special in-game Anniversary Store. Prizes for completing five acts will include items such as the mind-blowing 3D style for the Т30, the legendary American Tier IX tank destroyer.

The first Act will also herald the return of General Chat. World of Tanks will bring back it for one week between April 21 through April 28 and for Random Battles only, allowing players to rediscover the ability to sow mischief in game – by communicating with enemies as well as allies during the battle.

From Time Warps to T30 3D style, special missions, thematic Acts – this will be a birthday to remember! For more information on these events, visit     https://worldoftanks.asia/10-years/
