While it may have seemed like a foregone conclusion Epic Games has made it official by announcing that Fortnite will indeed be coming to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 at launch and will run on Unreal Engine 4 when it is released but, thanks to the company’s efforts to allow for forward compatibility, it will be transitioning to Unreal Engine 5 halfway through 2021.
The company did not state if the paid aspect of Fortnite, “Save the World,” will transfer to next-gen platforms if already purchased on current platforms but for now, Fortnite is available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices.
Epic Games revealed Unreal Engine 5 for the first time today by providing some new details about what developers will be able to do using the engine as well as a real-time demonstration called “Lumen in the Land of Nanite” that is being run on the PlayStation 5. This demo highlights the two new core technologies being added to Unreal Engine 5 which are Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry frees artists to create as much geometric detail as the eye can see.
Nanite virtualized geometry means that film-quality source art comprising hundreds of millions or billions of polygons can be imported directly into Unreal Engine—anything from ZBrush sculpts to photogrammetry scans to CAD data—and it just works. Nanite geometry is streamed and scaled in real time so there are no more polygon count budgets, polygon memory budgets, or draw count budgets; there is no need to bake details to normal maps or manually author LODs; and there is no loss in quality.
Lumen is a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes. The system renders diffuse interreflection with infinite bounces and indirect specular reflections in huge, detailed environments, at scales ranging from kilometers to millimeters. Artists and designers can create more dynamic scenes using Lumen, for example, changing the sun angle for time of day, turning on a flashlight, or blowing a hole in the ceiling, and indirect lighting will adapt accordingly. Lumen erases the need to wait for lightmap bakes to finish and to author light map UVs—a huge time savings when an artist can move a light inside the Unreal Editor and lighting looks the same as when the game is run on console.

Exclusive Pack Purchases Support Autism Ontario London and The Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex in DE’s First-Ever All-Digital TennoCon
LONDON, ONTARIO, CA – May 13 2020 – Canadian developer and publisher Digital Extremes announced today purchases of its new TennoCon Game Packs will support its two charity partners, Autism Ontario London and The Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex. For the fifth year running, Digital Extremes’ TennoCon, the Warframe®-dedicated game conference created for its 50 million-plus player base, will take place from 11 am to 6 pm ET, Saturday, July 11. Due to health restrictions created by the Coronavirus (COVID-19), TennoCon 2020 will be an all-digital event, and it is now included in the very first Summer Game Fest program.
Following last year’s extended panel streams, Digital Extremes already had planned to expand digital programming in 2020 so more players from home could experience and celebrate the joy of TennoCon. This year, working from home, DE will broadcast all TennoCon content live via Twitch, Mixer, YouTube, and Facebook Live.
Three new TennoCon packs were designed for players to feel the excitement and connectedness of TennoCon’s all-digital conference in lieu of a physical event. The Digital Pack ($24.99 USD) is an exclusive suite of in-game cosmetics, items and Baro’s Relay; the Merch Pack ($34.99 USD) includes exclusive physical TennoCon gear (beautiful commemorative T-shirt and pin). And the TennoCon Bundle ($54.99 USD) combines both Digital and Merch Packs at a discounted rate. Check Warframe’s website for more details.
Because TennoCon is a charity event, a portion of all proceeds will be given to Digital Extremes’ valued partners, Autism Ontario London and Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex (ASLM), two community-oriented, local Canadian organizations that help citizens in need of special attention and care.
“Autism Ontario London is excited to partner with Digital Extremes and bring a greater understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to the game industry,” said Kelly Wilson, Autism Ontario London – Chapter Development Coordinator. “In Canada 1 in 66 children and youth is diagnosed with autism, making autism one of the most common developmental disabilities. It is vital that those living with autism – whether personally diagnosed or caring for another –receive the support needed to manage the challenges they face. We are thankful for the partnerships with community-focused organizations like Digital Extremes that help us provide support to autism.”
“We are thrilled that Digital Extremes selected our organization as one of the partner charities for TennoCon 2020,” said Carol Walters, CEO of the Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex (ASLM). “Families living with dementia can feel isolated, overwhelmed and anxious in normal times and these last few months have been anything but normal. The need for dementia support services in our region continues to rise and if the COVID-19 crisis has shown us anything, it is the power of community coming together to help others. We are grateful for this partnership and appreciate Digital Extremes commitment to supporting our work, our clients and our community.”
Since its debut in 2016, TennoCon’s digital streams, like Warframe itself, remain free. Players who would like to donate during the event itself can do so via Warframe’s Tiltify page, which will go live during Tennocon, Tiltify.com/.

Think it is safe to say many of us have been experiencing launch day jitters, watching stats, making patches, and really just wanting to jump into the game with the community all the time. But we have never been happier than we are right now! Thank you to everyone who jumped into the hunt with us on launch day.
Today is probably one of the most exciting days for me personally. It is my birthday for one, and secondly, I get to talk about one of the biggest career highs of my life right here in this blog. I get to share with you what our first free update and first paid DLC are.
We are bringing Dutch to Predator: Hunting Grounds. Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger has reprised one of my favourite roles from childhood for this game. The game that IllFonic has developed out of a love for the ’87 Predator. To say my inner child cannot be contained is putting it mildly. Yes, I got to meet him, and yes, I think I kept my cool. We got to spend a day in sunny California recording with Arnold. And before you ask, Arnold truly is one of the nicest people I have met in my lifetime.
In order to make Predator: Hunting Grounds the game we envisioned it to be, it had to include Dutch’s story and bringing him back into the universe. We have created two different items for the community in order to do this. The first is a free update, available for all players who own the game. Players will be able to learn where Dutch has been all these years and hear his story in his own words through a series of voice tapes that you earn as you level up.
The second is a paid DLC pack where you can play as Dutch and get early access to the QR5 “Hammerhead” Rifle and Dutch’s Knife! (available free for all players later in June) Getting the future Dutch just right was so exciting for the entire team. Creating the details, working with our partners to make certain everything fit together perfectly in the universe, and of course working with the legend himself has been a dream come true. We cannot wait until you can get access to both the free update and the paid DLC on May 26!
Rest assured, the content doesn’t stop with Dutch. We have some really fun stuff in store for the community. We have both free updates and paid DLC coming in the months ahead that will keep you on your toes in the hunt and continue to make the game exciting for everyone.
With the free updates we plan to introduce new weapons, game modes, and more. We will share more as we get closer to each content drop. For the various paid DLC you will get access to more themed character packs. Dutch is just the beginning! Be sure to follow our socials and join the community forum at predator.illfonic.com. We will update in these channels as more information is ready to be shared. Now I need to get back into the game and practice my hunting skills because Dutch will be here on 26th May!
