The Quantum Prisoner, a Completely Free Video Game Experience Makes Science Fun and Accessible to all!

0

Science, Technology and Logic are Your Best Allies to solve more than 30 puzzles and succeed in the adventure; Playable on PC, Mac, Mobile Devices and Tablets

Paris, France – September 15th, 2020 — The CEA, a French public scientific research organisation, today announced The Quantum Prisoner, an absolutely free browser-based puzzle adventure already popular in France, will be launching in English on October 5th, bringing the fun world of science and technology to a global audience. Featuring 10-12 hours of gameplay, The Quantum Prisoner is designed to make science accessible and fun for everyone, from 12 years old and over and can be played on any sufficiently recent browser with an internet connection – or by offline download or via the Android App, which will be available through the game website on October 5th.

Play as Zoe, traveling to all four corners of the globe on the trail of Artus Cropp, a physician who mysteriously disappeared in the 1960s, to uncover the discovery that may have led to his disappearance – a  discovery that will change the world. To progress in your investigation and escape perilous situations, you must solve more than 30 puzzles involving technology (such as operating particle accelerators, fuel cells and robots), and various other branches of science, including environmental and life sciences, physics, chemistry, and maybe even a bit of quantum physics!

“We made The Quantum Prisoner with the help of our fellow CEA scientists and researchers with the sole purpose of making science fun and showcasing scientific and technical culture to a younger demographic,” said Roland Lehoucq, astrophysicist at CEA and scientific adviser of the game. “Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a scientist to solve these puzzles! You learn as you play along, in line with the scientific approach. You will be able to move forward thanks to informative videos and facts along the way, as well as assistance from our researchers if you get stuck”.

The Quantum Prisoner is a browser-based game created by the CEA with the sole purpose of making science fun and more accessible. The game is completely free with no registration required, no ads, and can be played on any browser without the need of downloading a plug-in, unless you desire to play offline. The Quantum Prisoner is designed for players in the 12/13 age range  and over but can be enjoyed by players as young as 8 with the help of an adult on some of the more difficult puzzles. Featuring 10-12 hours of gameplay, The Quantum Prisoner takes players around the world on a point and click adventure that walks the line between science and science fiction, with retro graphics and  a dose of humour.

First released in October, 2019 in France (only in French), The Quantum Prisoner received praise at Paris Games Week and has attracted more than 100,000 gamers across the country, receiving positive feedback from the players. Given this success, the CEA is now developing the game in English for a wider audience and will release the game to global markets on October 5th.

Buffaloed Review

Buffaloed

Studios: Lost City; Bold Crayon Pictures; MXN Entertainment
Publisher: Magnolia Pictures
Platforms: Digitalout now on iTunes, Google, Xbox, Amazon and other major digital platforms.
Release Date: 9th of September, 2020

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too impressed with the trailer for Buffaloed when I saw it. It looked like another run-of-the-mill American comedy which ultimately gives away the bulk of the film’s plot with in-character narration directly to the audience. Despite the cliche, I was hopefully that first impressions could be deceiving and that the film was more than it appeared on the surface and might surprise me. So I booted up my laptop, set up my home theatre and tried to forget about the world’s troubles unfolding outside my window.

Story

The film’s narrative follows Peggy Dahl (Zoey Deutch) in her quest from childhood to become wealthy. From her youth, we see her calculating and working numerous schemes in order to build up a fortune and go to college. Unfortunately, due to the dubious legality of one of these schemes, she ends up serving time in prison where she continues to plot and pull money-making schemes with little success. Her dreams of college shattered after leaving prison, Peggy finds a new profession which might suit her unscrupulous self in the world of private debt collecting. After she finds that her boss is exploiting her, she sets out to start her own debt collection agency to compete in the amoral and bloodthirsty debt collecting industry.

I found the film’s protagonist to be utterly vile. Her entire philosophy of material acquisition regardless of cost to others around for no reason other than pure avarice has no endearment for me. I have enjoyed the antics of greedy characters and their arcs as they learn that money is not everything… but Peg just held no other redeeming qualities for me. Her unremitting greed being played straight at the start of the film, combined with no other compelling foil character, means that I just was not invested in the narrative arc of the film. The single note she hits just isn’t particularly compelling or entertaining to watch and the film expects me to find her compelling or likeable. When Peg finally experiences a change of heart, the change just carried no emotional impact because I had no investment in this character. This lack of engagement fundamentally dulled my enjoyment of the film in general.

Despite my lack of engagement with the protagonist, I can state that Deutch’s performance is frenetically unmatched by her peers. It’s clear to see that Deutch is laying all she’s got on the table with what she brings to her character but without my own investment in her character, I just found her to be obnoxious and repulsive more than anything. Similarly, with the ensemble cast I found that there just wasn’t too much for me to invest in with the characters around Peg. Jermaine Fowler as Ada does a good turn as the film’s love interest and conscience but is similarly constrained by lack of development. Their primary characteristics are largely based around their specific relationship to Peg and leaves them feeling one dimensional.

The film’s writing, I feel was largely to blame for so many of its shortcomings. Buffalloed markets itself as a comedy and I ultimately found it’s humour falling flat more often than not. It was the perfect mix of dry humour and American cringe comedy to completely alienate me from my sense of humour. Furthermore, I believe the film attempts to address the serious economic issues at play in the American debt collection industry but ultimately anything to fundamentally say beyond “the debt collection industry is evil”; a sentiment only the depraved would disagree with. The film does nothing to explore the wider economic context and the forces therein which leads to the accumulation of private debt in the hands of villainous debt collectors which is an opportunity that was sorely missed to tap into the vein of the present.

Visuals

The film’s visual direction does not leave to great of an impression in either direction. The scenes are competently shot and staged and the editing is fine but there’s no real visual flourishes that elevate the film above that of a competent baseline. Interestingly, Buffaloed does perform a cinematic homage to a film that similarly tackled the state of the American economy, The Big Short, by doing a similar expository fourth wall breaking cut-away to explain a piece of financial jargon. I very much enjoyed this foray into learning about the debt collection industry and I wished there had been more of them.

Audio

The film doesn’t really engage with it’s sound design in a particularly unique or memorable way. The film’s soundtrack is made up of a number of pop songs of various genres which, off the top of my head, I cannot quite recall. The music is serviceable and does the job of punctuating the film’s narrative beats but there isn’t anything that particularly stuck with me after the film’s credits rolled. It’s not at all bad but it’s not good either and I don’t have much more to add in my analysis.

Conclusion

Overall, I don’t think I can really recommend Buffaloed. Perhaps there is something I’m missing but I just could not connect with the avaricious protagonist in her quest for lucre. This alienation unfortunately undercut a lot of the film’s humour and my ability to enjoy it as a comedy. The film’s visuals and audio weren’t anything particularly inspired by my own analysis although I did appreciate the homage to one of my favourite films I got to review. Overall, I don’t know if there’s enough here for me to recommend the film to anyone.

Cute ‘Em Up B.ARK Launches Animal Astronauts On Consoles and PC Q4 2020

BURBANK, Calif. – Sept. 14, 2020 – B.ARK, the interstellar animal adventure cute ’em up for the whole family from Tic Toc Games featured in a Nintendo™ Showcase earlier this year, blasts into space for fun, challenging adventures Q4 2020 as a timed-exclusive on Nintendo Switch™.

https://youtu.be/EfDa9ERO0rI

Carefully crafted by some of the minds behind Shovel Knight, Contra 4, and A Boy and His Blob, B.ARK feels like a Saturday-morning cartoon for the whole family. When a cybernetic army of sea creatures known as the Dark Tide threatens the universe, humanity’s only hope is Team Bio-Interstellar ARK (B.ARK), an awesome crew of animal pilots!

Assemble for a family game night and join B.ARK’s four furry heroes on their journey to save the Solar System. Barker the Dog, Felicity the Cat, Lucio the Bear, and Marv the Rabbit all possess Super-Duper abilities to help turn the…tide…against the Dark Tide. Barker temporarily turns baddies into goodies while Felicity can double her bullets for extra damage. Create a powerful barrier for the whole team as Lucio, or slow down every on-screen enemy with Marv.

Coordinate with up to four local pilots to activate Super Fusion Combos that can take down even the most powerful revenge-seeking sealife. Though B.ARK soars through space in top-of-the-line ships, their fishy enemies put up quite the fight. When they take too much damage, crew members can attach to friendly ships in Side-Car Mode to stay in the fight. But a bit of friendly competition never hurt anyone — tally the results at the end of levels to see who played best.

Journey through our corner of the Milky Way discovering animated friends and foes while visiting colorful planets. Battle sea creatures like Guppies, Hammerheads, and Crush-taceans piloting powerful mechs. And what sort of cute ‘em up would be complete without tough bosses?

B.ARK invites families and friends to reconnect for a night of fast-paced fun.Charming hand-drawn animation, epic space-faring music that keeps the action lighthearted, and an all-ages setting means anyone can pick up the game, start playing, and start smiling in mere minutes.

“With B.ARK, we’ve created a seamless story experience from the opening cinematic to the menus, and into gameplay,” said Marc Gomez, director, Tic Toc Games. “We hope players and their teammates find themselves immersed in the colorful world we’ve presented to them and fall in love with the different animal heroes of the B.ARK team!”

B.ARK releases on Nintendo Switch™ as a timed-exclusive in North America, Europe, Great Britain, and Russia in English for $9.99. For more information on B.ARK, visit the official website, follow Tic Toc Games on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Systemic Reaction’s Co-op Dino Shooter Second Extinction Coming Oct. 13 to Steam Early Access

STOCKHOLM Sept. 14, 2020 — Systemic Reaction, a creative division of Avalanche Studios Group, has announced that the online co-op dino shooter Second Extinction will be available on Steam Early Access for PC on Oct. 13, 2020, for $24.99. The reveal accompanies a new trailer featuring a time-lapse cover art drawing for the game from legendary retro cover artist Tom duBois. Tom’s work for Konami defined the action game genre of the ’90s, and his Second Extinction artwork captures the spirit of the era as characters Ortega and Amir make a great escape from the claws of death.

“What helped fuel me creatively? That’s easy! Badass characters! Mind boggling creativity! It gave me so much ‘go juice,’ I wanted to honor the designers by being as loyal as possible to the characters. The process is a constant back and forth between revising, correcting, and fine tuning until it just feels right. It never comes easy, and it’s a battle from start to finish,” said Tom duBois.

The time-lapse is a double-hit of throwback thrills, as Cody Carpenter (son of cult film director John Carpenter), uses his unique game-inspired synth and drum style to score the piece (track titled “Prehistoric Menace”).

Second Extinction pits teams of up to three players together in fast-paced and intense battles to reclaim a dangerous frozen Earth from mutant dinosaurs. Fight side by side with your friends with a wide range of powerful weapons against beastly predators long thought extinct — now mutated and deadlier than ever! The War Effort is Second Extinction’s global metagame: by slaying dinos, completing missions and more, players will determine the kinds of enemies, activities, challenges and rewards they’ll face in different regions around the world.

Here’s what players can expect in early access:

  • Day One: 4 Heroes, 10 Weapons with 5 upgrade tiers, and 6 missions across 7 regions
  • In the future:
    • Loadout modifiers — party buffs for each mission
    • Armor Augments
    • Timed game modes, including a horde mode
    • An additional mutation and related effects
    • And much more!

Second Extinction is available to wishlist now on Steam. It is also in development for Xbox Series X and Xbox One. For more info, visit www.SecondExtinctionGame.com, and follow @2nd_Extinction on Twitter.
