Stealth Action Game UnMetal is coming to PC and Console This Summer

2D Stealth ‘Em Up Delivers 80’s Nostalgia with Killer Comedy and Eyepatch Slingshots

Baltimore, MD – June 15th, 2021 – indie publisher Versus Evil in partnership with Independent developer Unepic_Fran are excited to announce that their 2D stealth action game UnMetal is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch and popular PC stores Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG this summer with a release date to be announced in the coming weeks.

An updated playable demo on PC for Steam is available for players to try, and coincides with new reveals and demos in Steam’s Next Fest from the 16th June.

UnMetal is driven by a narrative that piles on the 80’s movie and TV nostalgia alongside gameplay and characters heavily inspired by games where hiding in cardboard boxes is considered a sound evasion strategy. UnMetals top down 2D pixel-art visuals deliberately give the game a distinctly retro feel and tasks you, the player, to conduct a covert mission to escape a clandestine military base for a crime you didn’t commit. Espionage and deception go hand in hand as you take out video cameras with grenades, knock out nosy predictable guards and subdue pursuing enemies with military grade hardware when things inevitably go haywire.

“When Versus Evil first started to talk with UnEpic_Fran about UnMetal, I honestly didn’t know what to expect.  Once we played UnMetal and started learning more, we were hooked. This isn’t just a stealth action game, but a game that is fun, challenging, and wrapped up into a classic retro design filled with intelligent humor. There are truly some genuine laugh out loud moments in this game that make you feel like you are quoting lines from your favorite movie.  The Versus Evil team could not be more excited to launch UnMetal.” said Steve Escalante,General Manager of Versus Evil.

You can start your own escape on all the major console stores this summer, and UnMetal will also stealth onto Steam, GOG, Epic Game Store, Humble Store, Gamesplanet., VersusEvil.com and all other approved Versus Evil PC retailers.

Check out the new official UnMetal announcement trailer which featured as part of the recent Guerrilla Collective 2021 game reveals.

Roguebook Review

Roguebook

Developer: Abrakam Entertainment
Publisher: Nacon
Platform: Windows PC
Release Date: 17 June 2021
Price: $26.99 USD/$39.95 AUD  – Available Here

Video Review

Overview

Roguebook is the latest deck builder from Abrakam Entertainment. This time around, the developers have partnered with Richard Garfield, the creator of the legendary card game Magic: The Gathering. Roguebook mixes elements rogue-like mechanics, deck builder gameplay, and a splash of Civilization exploration.

Story

Players are trapped a book and must fight their way out. Being a rogue-like, the game is understandably thin on story. There is a little attempt to world build through short discussions, events, and character descriptions, but it is a sparse attempt.

Gameplay

Roguebook First 30 Minutes of Gameplay

Roguebook is in the same vein as other rogue-like deck builders like Slay the Spire and Monster Train. Players need to conquer three levels to win. There are four characters in the game, each with their own unique talent tree. As players complete runs, they will earn pages to unlock permanent buffs to help them progress deeper into the game. Roguebook offers a twist on rogue-like deck builders with its Civilization style exploration.

The deck building is very satisfying. Roguebook tries to break from the traditional tactic of slimming down a deck to the bare metal in hopes of cycling important, synergistic cards as quickly as possible. Instead, Roguebook encourages players to collect at least a certain number of cards in their deck to max out their talents. The cards are smartly designed to boot, offering plenty of potent deck options.

Combat is excellent. Two characters using their own abilities adds a layer of tactical complexity. Not only do players need to worry about incoming damage and debuffs to maximize their gains, but the physical positioning is also key to victory or defeat as each character have a role that they specialize in. The character who plays a defend card is moved to the front of the line. Since damage carries over between fights, players need to be careful with positioning. Combat is a thinking game. New players will be able to learn the ropes and consider some basic decks in the first level, but the difficulty level quickly ramps up. At times, I found the ramp up between levels to be a bit brutal until later in the game.

The Civilization style map exploration is a wonderful addition to the deck building gameplay. Players are limited to five paintbrushes to uncover tiles around them. For more precise and efficient work, inks reveal a smaller amount of space. The goal is to strategically use the paintbrushes and inks to reach major points of interests in hopes of uncovering buffs, rewards, and fights that will make the boss battle easier. It’s a game of risk of reward with a bit of luck thrown in. Players must constantly consider the benefits of getting in a fight with many regular or elite encounters in hopes of getting enough inks and equipment to beat the run, without being so crippled that it’s impossible to clear the boss. It’s an amazing level of complexity considering most overworlds in deck builders are simple paths with only one or two options.

The UI is probably the weakest part of Roguebook. There are clear cues taken from previous competitive card games and deck builders. On the flip side, not all of the UI design translates clearly. There is a lot of bloat that could have been slimmed down, such as the extra step to access the shop or the lack of a keybind to automatically loot all items. Some advanced functions like filters and counts for certain abilities would have been nice. It would be easier to see a breakdown of the current deck, choose cards to pair with gems, and figure out which item should be equipped on which hero.

Visuals

Roguebook has an excellent art style. The game has a fantasy storybook art style with the slightest splash of Civilization. The old school painted art look is also a wonderful nod to Garfield’s Magic: The Gathering’s art style.

Audio

The audio experience isn’t expansive, but it is solid. The sound effects are good, though a few extra would have helped break up some of the monotony. The soundtrack is an enjoyable background to the game without being particularly intrusive. There isn’t much voice acting, as it’s mostly a few lines for each character. Regardless, they are done well and would easily work for larger indie titles.

Overall

Roguebook is an excellent deck building game that throws in just enough twists on the popular indie genre to make it stand out in a crowded space. I haven’t been this addicted to a game for a while.  The deck building is solid due to the large deck design and a good selection of cards. Combat is deep and very rewarding, and the Civilization style overworld is a home run.  While the UI and graphical issues need to be polished off, Roguebook is an excellent choice.

Backbone Review

Backbone

Developer: EggNut
Publisher: Raw Fury
Platforms: PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 8 Jun 2021
Price: $24,99 USD – Available Here

Overview

A wise man once said, “find a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”. But the reality is sometimes far removed from our expectations. Take the main character in Backbone, for example. A private investigator without any dreams of making the world a better place. He is just in it for the money, plain and simple. And while he might be good at it, offers aren’t exactly pouring in. If anything, our protagonist is barely scraping by. His next case is a monkey paw type of deal. While it might bring him some financial stability in his life, it will also throw him in a vast net of city conspiracies, gruesome murders, and shady dealings. And as the icing on the cake, he has to do all that and make it out alive while being a raccoon!

Story

To be fair, it’s not like anyone turned him into a raccoon for the duration of the game. The post-noir city of Vancouver in Backbone is full of anthropomorphic cats, dogs, bears, foxes, raccoons, and so on. You don’t stand out and don’t exactly fit in. One night, a client comes to Howard Lotor (that’s our raccoon dude btw) and tells him she suspects her husband is cheating on her. What’s starts as a routine case will soon devolve into something far more sinister, while we juggle between solving the case and saving our life in the end. After all, what god is being paid for our work if we don’t live long enough to spend it properly?

Gameplay

Backbone is your typical point n click adventure, with a touch of stealth, exploration, and extensive dialogue with other characters. There are some puzzles here and there and they’re pretty moderate in difficulty. Usually, the solution is in the same room as you. While the branching paths in dialogue are extensive, in the end, they might only decide what Steam achievement you’re going to get. But it is the character of Howard Lotor that elevates the whole dialogue in Backbone to the next level. Howard is a defeated cynic, somewhat crushed under the weight of the punches that life threw at him. He is stuck in a city that doesn’t like him and the feeling is mutual. All of that is visibly poured into his inner thoughts and interactions with others.

Visuals

While the atmosphere of the city in Backbone is bleak and depressing, the art style is far from that. I have a confession to make: I have a mild resentment to the pixel art approach in video games. Mild but strong. You could blame it on the oversaturation of indie games bringing that to the spotlight but after a while, I just started seeing it as a lack of creativity. An easy way out and an easy way to make an indie game. At least, that’s how I felt in general until I started playing more and more of Backbone. I think these screenshots speak for themselves but this is the first game where I would often stop just to absorb the visual background and the incredible amount of details that went into every single scene. Each area of the city such as Gastown, West End, Greenery and Granville have their own unique visual identity.

Audio

To disappoint you right off the bat, the characters in Backbone are not fully voiced. I do acknowledge that some extra work went into the background music of the game (which will be your companion most of the time, along with your inner thoughts). At the same time, I do consider it a lost opportunity that the soundtrack doesn’t have a noticeable presence of jazz tunes. It would go incredibly well with the post-noir setting of the game. The music in the game is just the right amount so you don’t feel completely alone but not enough to stand out.

Overall

Backbone is a game that is a perfect recommendation to someone who is indifferent to point n click games. A recommendation to someone that might a low assumption or two about the pixel art in indie games (I’m subtly talking about myself, in case you haven’t noticed). It might seem funny, but I’m kinda embarrassed how long it took me to finally realize just how much care and love is usually poured into these types of games. But I suppose Backbone was a turning point. I’ve been blind, but now I see. In the end, this is the game that left me satisfied at the end while also made me wish for more. That’s mostly thanks to the game’s noticeably short duration and the ending that comes out of nowhere. Despite all of its shortcomings, Backbone gets a heartfelt recommendation from me.
