Paint the Town Red Causes Chaos on Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, Steam July 29

Paint the Town Red Causes Chaos on Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, Steam July 29

Voxel Melee Brawler Enjoyed by More than 400,000 Hooligans Demolishes Early Access

QUEENSLAND, Australia – June 29, 2021 – Paint the Town Red, the first-person brawler with sandbox combat levels and a massive roguelike mode from South East Games, bursts out of Early Access where more than 400,000 bruisers created carnage, and onto Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PlayStation 5 and 4 on Thursday, July 29, alongside the debut of 1.0 on Steam for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux.

Originally released in 2015 to Early Access, version 1.0 of Paint the Town Red evolved from a violent voxel sandbox into a deeply-customizable action experience. Slay foes in fast-paced, visceral first-person melee action using fisticuffs, class abilities, and wielding from a selection of more than 200 weapons. Attack with improvised armaments like barstools, implements of pain like shurikens, and say hasta la vista to foes with deadly firearms.

Tackle the roguelike Beneath mode, working for a clandestine organization that stands against undead terrors and eldritch horrors in a subterranean world. Pick from five different classes with distinct stats and abilities, such as the nimble Spectre who possesses the ability to teleport and the stalwart Vanguard capable of healing allies. Uncover the mysteries of this shifting, procedurally-generated world, and defeat the four Elder Gods.

Cause mayhem in Scenarios mode, a series of themed sandboxes where brawlers must kill ‘em all and let the Elder Gods sort ‘em out. Fight to the bloody end in the Arena mode, with an endless mode for warriors to push themselves to the limits. Use modifiers to customize the experience, enabling prospective punishers to bring a gun to a swashbuckling pirate fight or enjoy a slow-mo disco demolition night with an authorized SUPERHOT mode.

PC fighters can expand the fun even further with a built-in level editor and full Steam Workshop support, with more than 8,000 items and counting including custom levels, texture packs, and music packs. A PC-exclusive online co-op mode allows up to 4 rowdy brawlers to make a bloody mess in Scenarios or pummel the Elder Gods in Beneath mode together.

Paint the Town Red’s lightning-fast, gory, and tactile combat makes it such a blast to play,” said Matthew Carr, South East Games, co-founder. “The simplistic voxel-based graphics present the game as clean and sterile at first glance, but once the fists start flying, all of the viscera and fleshy bits really add some colourful details.”

Paint the Town Red launches Thursday, July 29 on Steam for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux, as well as PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch for $19.99. A Playstation 5 release will follow shortly afterward. Paint the Town Red supports English audio and interface, with interface support for French, Italian, German, Spanish, Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazil), Romanian, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Swedish, Thai, Traditional Chinese, Turkish, and Ukrainian.

The Sandbox Unveils Zero Carbon Plan to Foster Environmentally Friendly NFT Ecosystem

Gaming metaverse unveils bold strategy to reduce environmental through layer 2, carbon credits compensation and trees growing charity support actions impact by up to 99%

HONG KONG – June 29th, 2021 – The Sandbox, the virtual world built onto the blockchain and a subsidiary of Animoca Brands, has unveiled a Zero Carbon plan to address the environmental impact of NFTs with a multi-step strategy currently in development. The Sandbox team is seeking to bring creators and gamers together in a persistent virtual world that provides secure ownership via NFTs while using up to 100 times less energy than traditional blockchain transactions.

The Sandbox has laid out several commitments in reducing environmental impact:

  • New Efficient Technology: The Sandbox is migrating to a new eco-friendly NFT layer 2 technical solution this summer that will use up to 100X less energy than Ethereum.
  • Carbon Removal Offset: The Sandbox has begun acquiring carbon credits for reversing emissions with carbon removals via blockchain based platforms, such as Nori and Offsetra, providing transparency on the compensation. The company has already calculated its carbon footprint associated with NFTs for 2021 to be equivalent to 350 tonnes of CO2 and acquired $Carbon Credits. Check Nori Sandbox Certificate of Carbon Removal. In addition, The Sandbox also purchased 200 tonnes of CO2 removal credits from Offsetra. You can visit The Sandbox’s profile page to view the impact and proof of certification.
  • Tree Growing: The Sandboxhas renewed its partnership collaboration with WeForest, a forest restoration charity it previously partnered with in 2014 to plant nearly 9,000 Mangrove trees in Madagascar, and committed that for every hectare users buy of virtual LANDS in The Sandbox, 1% of proceeds goes to WeForest to protect and restore forests in Ethiopia, Zambia and Brazil. The Sandbox will engage with additional nature protection foundations in its ongoing efforts to make a real impact in the physical world. You can follow The Sandbox‘s tree regrowing progress on the WeForest website.

The Sandbox wants to set the standard for transparency and best practices in the world of NFTs and encourages a healthy discourse about the tools that can be used to reduce environmental impact and the uses of NFTs and blockchain technology.

The Sandbox is committed to building a vibrant and environmentally friendly gaming ecosystem while fully supporting secure content ownership, creating new jobs and offering economic opportunities” said Sebastien Borget, COO and Co-Founder of The Sandbox. “As a pioneer in the blockchain gaming space, we’re taking steps to mitigate energy usage by up to 99% now, and will continue to look for additional solutions such as our engagement with WeForest to protect and restore forests in Ethiopia, Zambia and Brazil.

In the meantime, The Sandbox has recently launched the beta for its Marketplace, allowing artists from the Artist Fund to monetise their NFTs. They have pledged to reduce the number of minted NFTs while improving the technical functionality of the Marketplace. To support the artists from the Artist Fund, NFT drop events will continue while waiting for the new environmentally-friendly technology to come online.

Under the new efficient technology powered by Polygon, NFT mining will generate less than 1% of the carbon emission that it currently produces on the standard Ethereum blockchain. The Sandbox is also considering other options that are currently in development if a more efficient technological solution were to appear.

This commitment to addressing the environmental impact has led The Sandbox to partner with Nori, who were part of 2019s Techstars Sustainability program. Nori coordinates the creation and administration of carbon removal projects, starting with regenerative agriculture projects that store carbon in soil thanks to the large co-benefits including water retention and improvements to soil health and quality. Through working with Nori, The Sandbox will be responsible for a number of Nori Carbon Removal Tonnes (NRTs), each NRT representing a tonne of CO2 removed from the atmosphere and stored in a terrestrial reserve.

“The team at The Sandbox is paying attention. They see that this is not a zero-sum game; we can innovate in technologies like blockchain and take care of our environment,” said Alexsandra Guerra, Co-Founder of Nori.com. “The time when businesses define success only by the bottom line is now antiquated; we need to look at the double bottom line: profits and impact, as The Sandbox is doing.”

“One of Offsetra’s co-founders, Damien Schuster, @damshoey, was one of the first LAND buyers,” said Andrew Bonneau, Carbon Markets Advisor at Offsetra. “Our team of crypto natives is thrilled to help The Sandbox reduce its emissions and help drive sustainability forward in unique metaverses like theirs.”

Almighty: Kill Your Gods – Game Update Takes The Action Underground

The Hollows are Coming

Baltimore, MD – June 29th 2021 – Independent games publisher Versus Evil and developer RUNWILD Entertainment today announced that the next major content update for their third person co-op action RPG Almighty: Kill Your Gods is now live.

The action goes underground in this latest update via the Hollows, a subterranean network of Elder God tunnels, caves, old mine workings and long forgotten ancient dwellings of the ancestors for players to hunt and score loot inside.

Entering the Hollows is a time based event, made accessible using keys once players have reached Almighty level or above. Utilizing an extraction portal, players have a limited amount of time before they are locked down and are trapped inside.

Entering the Hollows isn’t without risk of course, within the dark and cramped confines of this subterranean domain there’s a Thunderhead Guardian variant that shoots balls of lightning from its head in addition to being charged with Fire Magic and resistant to its effect. If that isn’t enough, lava rivers and poisonous waste are other hazards players will need to avoid to fully enjoy the spoils of war.

“Aside from the ongoing updates, tweaks and optimization we’ve been hard at work on, we’re really excited to introduce a whole new environment for players to explore and fight in, more of which will be introduced in stages during early access. This update takes things up a notch in terms of player adversaries and rewards, and we can’t wait to see what players think of the Hollows”. Said Darran Thomas, Creative Director at RunWild Entertainment.

RunWild intends to introduce five Hollows locations throughout the realm, each one presenting the player with unique enemy variants to do battle with, all of which are Almighty level or above, players looking for a fight won’t be disappointed.

Are The Hollows worth the risk? There are unique Almighty treasure chests in the Hollows that hold signature gear not available above ground, and destructible containers that contain large quantities of crafting materials that players can make keen use of.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Developer Diary Sheds New Light on the Great Fortress of Drezen

Owlcat Games’ Classic Isometric CRPG Arrives on Consoles Later This Year; Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous coming to GeForce Now on launch

Moscow, Russia, June 28, 2021 – Owlcat Games has shared a new developer diary for its classic isometric CRPG Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. The video reveals new information on Drezen, a sprawling fortress that will play a pivotal role as fans reclaim the world from demonic spawn this September 2 on PC via Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store. The studio also shared that Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S via backwards compatibility later this year in digital and physical formats. Console retail copies will be distributed by Prime Matter. More details regarding the title’s console versions will be provided at a later date.

Pay a visit to the great fortress of Drezen with today’s developer diary:

Drezen is the linchpin that holds Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous’ story together. During the adventure the Queen will order heroes to take back the fortress by any means necessary. The assault’s starting location is highly influenced by the choices players make and the advice they follow. A climatic battle of resilience and wit unfolds.

If players are successful, Drezen will evolve to become much more than a place to sleep, wash, sell and buy gear. The fortress and its NPCs will change according to the Mythic Path one chooses and the decisions one makes throughout the game.

Moreover, Owlcat Games has announced that Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is coming to Nvidia’s cloud gaming service on release date. GeForce Now members who purchase Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous on PC will be able to stream the game to Windows or Mac computers, Android devices, or Nvidia’s Shield TV streaming players starting the same day it officially launches.

CRYPTOMINING MALWARE INFECTING GAMERS’ COMPUTERS TO MAKE MILLIONS IN CRYPTOCURRENCY

CRYPTOMINING MALWARE INFECTING GAMERS’ COMPUTERS TO MAKE MILLIONS IN CRYPTOCURRENCY

29 July June, 2021: New research from Avast Threat Labs has revealed that cybercriminals are targeting gamers with cryptomining malware, called “Crackonosh”, through “cracked” or pirated versions of popular online games, earning them over USD $2 million (AUD $2.6 million) in cryptocurrency to date.

The malware has been circulating since at least June 2018 and has been found hidden in free pirated versions of games such as Grand Theft Auto V, Far Cry 5, NBA2K19, and Fallout 4 GOTY which are available to download on torrent sites.

According to Avast Threat Labs, Crackonosh has infected over 222,000 systems worldwide since December 2020, including 2,837 in Australia and 900 in New Zealand, but the number could be significantly higher as this is only what Avast software has detected. Avast Threat Labs data also shows that over 800 devices continue to be infected every day.

Number of hits since December 2020. In total over 222,000 unique devices.

“Crackonosh installs itself by replacing critical Windows system files and abusing the Windows Safe mode to impair system defences,” explains Daniel Beneš from Avast Threat Labs.

“This malware further protects itself by disabling some security software, operating system updates and employs other anti-analysis techniques to prevent discovery, making it very difficult to detect and remove.”

Once installed, the malware uses your computer in the background for cryptomining, helping the cybercriminals gain cryptocurrency by using the processing power of the malware-infected computers to solve complex mathematical problems and verify cybercurrency transactions.

Infected users may notice that their computer is overheating or slowing down substantially in how it performs very simple processing tasks, but sometimes it can be hard to detect.

“As long as people continue to download cracked software, attacks like these will continue to be profitable for attackers. The key take-away from this is that you really can’t get something for nothing and when you try to steal software, odds are someone is trying to steal from you,” added Beneš.

Crackonosh has mostly infected users in the United States, Brazil, India, the Philippines, and Poland, with notable infections in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Canada. Other countries included Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Greece, Sweden, Turkey, Pakistan, and Indonesia.

Here are some tips to avoid cryptomining:

  • Don’t download pirated or “cracked” versions of online games as you don’t know what else you may download – it’s just not worth the risk.
  • Use a strong antivirus like Avast that can protect against cryptojacking by detecting unsecure websites and can help to detect and block most malicious software, like cryptomining malware.
  • Always make sure your Windows software is updated to prevent against vulnerabilities that can be used to spread cryptomining attacks.

Avast Threat Labs found cracked versions of the following games included Crackonosh:

  • NBA 2K19
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Far Cry  5
  • The Sims 4 Seasons
  • Euro Truck Simulator 2
  • The Sims 4
  • Jurassic World Evolution
  • Fallout 4 GOTY
  • Call of Cthulhu
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2018
  • We Happy Few

Overview

Legend of Mana released over twenty years ago as a part of the “Mana” franchise, and up until this remaster, I really didn’t give it the time of day. Sure, the art design at the time was amazing, but I was a lot younger and a lot less patient to take everything in back then. Thankfully, Square Enix have brought a remaster with a few updates and changes to fall in line with their other re-releases from the same series, and this time I finally got a closer look at a unique gameplay system that never grabbed me the first go around. How does this classic hold up after all these years? Let’s find out.

Story

Legend of Mana was a “sandbox” RPG before we really knew what a sandbox was. That statement holds true to its own narrative, where players basically must restore the world by rebuilding it, spawning NPCs and characters as they progress forward. That really is where the story is here, as every artifact you obtain can create an entire piece of a map, and it is your job to explore, find quests, and continue to gather more artifacts to continue the expansion. There are three character “arcs” to complete, as well as a ton of side-quests where you assist random NPCs with their day-to-day issues. Most quests are simple, but the characters are full of personality and quirk, fleshing out a bit of a backstory as you help them with their mundane tasks. Because nothing is really just given to the player, utilizing these mechanics take a bit of trial and error, but make for a title that has a very solid and rewarding sense of progression, as our silent protagonist’s journey is what the player makes of it.

Gameplay

As I mentioned, this is a game where you are kind of dropped into, and by simply choosing a location for your house, a world is created with a hub town where you then start hunting for more artifacts to build. This is known as “Land Make” mode, as the location of where you spawn an artifact does matter, as it can create a “Land” that is unique to itself, with new NPCs to recruit temporarily in order to complete their quests while also expanding the main narrative that lies underneath for each arc provided. It’s a lot to take in, but ultimately very deep and strategic due to the way the grid-styled overworld works.

Players who get hasty and do not plan before dropping a Land will quickly see a spike in difficulty, as Lands that are farther away from your house become more difficult in level. The battle system is true to the Mana franchise, featuring action-RPG mechanics, where players can attack, defend, and use abilities freely, with a leveling system continuously increasing the player’s stats as they explore more areas. Item collection is also a big deal, as equipped accessories can make or break a big battle. Partnered allies also play a role in combat as they will do their own attacks, but occasionally be able to add an exclusive attack or technique that assists in completing an area with a bit more ease.

It sounds like a lot because it really is. This remaster adds a lot more accessibility and guides to make sense of it all, but even then, I found myself having to basically feel out the game a lot before it all fell into place. Simply put, this is not a game that holds your hand as you are expected to learn it as you go and failing to read something can lead to a bit of tedious repetition as the learning curve to it all is mastered. Those wanting to have a friend join in can have them control an NPC which is a nice feature (and very familiar to the franchise), but only for specific areas and when you have a party member available.

Once you dig in and get past the depth of it all, Legend of Mana is actually a simple game to conquer, with so many secrets and rewards, all based off how you decide to play it. In this day and age of RPGs being either action or turn-based, this title adds a middle ground that truly feels unique and refreshing, even if it can get a bit stale due to the many filler Lands that don’t add a lot of value to the overall experience.

Visuals

This kind of goes without saying, but Legend of Mana is stunning. With rich colors and soft, hand drawn sprites, there is definitely a warm, relaxing atmosphere at work here. The animations add a lot of life and charm as well, with little NPCs scurrying about the environment, bringing this painting to life. The menus can feel a bit cluttered at times as this remaster may have refined instruction, but still has yet to streamline things – which kind of makes it feel as if just basic navigation of it can be a game in and of itself.

Audio

The soundtrack is some of the best video game music I have ever heard. Yoyo Shimomura (famous for Super Mario RPG, Xenoblade Chronicles, and a bevy of other big-hitters) makes the world of Fa’Diel feel impressive and boisterous, even at its most basic moments. While there is little voice work, the effects tie-in well, offering a lot of incentive to unlock new Lands to explore. Yes, the audio is something special, and at times maybe a little too giving due to how oddly the game holds itself together.

Overall

Legend of Mana is an odd one. It has an amazing soundtrack, fluid and fun gameplay, and some of the best art you can find in an RPG. That said, there is something a bit off when you step back and take it all in that misses the mark when it comes to creating one full experience. This is possibly due to the world building mechanics, but also due to a few too many mechanics all playing out at once. It’s not really disjointed as there is a flow to it all, but this Mana title definitely could have used a little more attention as at times it feels like you are playing a host of small experiences, rather than one whole one. It’s kind of like someone had all of these ideas to create the perfect RPG, but got too carried away and overfilled the world with unnecessary substance. Either way, this game is still well worth the price of admission and full of defining moments that are extremely satisfying, so longtime fans and newcomers should find a lengthy distraction within these gorgeous walls.
