Overview

It’s safe to say now that 2021 wasn’t exactly an exciting year for gaming. The impact of COVID on the gaming industry was obvious so we didn’t have a large repertoire of high-profile releases last year. I did enjoy spending my time with Forza Horizon 5, Psychonauts 2, and such but I wasn’t exactly drowned in new releases like the year before. But there was one game from last year that I eagerly awaited and then it got delayed – Dying Light 2. And then it got delayed again. But here it is now. Almost a year later but released and playable. You might wonder what is so special about this game. It’s simple. Dying Light combines some elements that you rarely see in other games. Parkour, melee combat, simple RPG elements, and an engaging story. I had fun with the previous game so let’s see if the sequel lives up to it.

Story

The story is set 15 after the events in Dying Light. Harran Virus has spread across the world and it is evolved, plunging the world into a period known as the Modern Dark Ages. And no more Kyle Crane, you now play as Aiden Caldwell. He is a member of an outcast group known as Pilgrims, constantly wandering the world looking for resources. His path takes him to Villedor to search for his sister Mia. She might be a key to the past he cannot remember. Your adventures in Villedor will inevitably have you engaged with two of the main factions there, Survivors and Pacifists. Siding with either of those in the certain mission will have an impact on the story and give you some benefits depending on who you assign certain city districts. More on that later.

Gameplay

In Dying Light 2 some features are taken away and some newly introduced. Techland giveth, Techland taketh away. What is easy to notice right away is more emphasis on melee combat. No more guns, except for bow. But now we have new toys in the form of paragliders (excellent for covering large distances) and a grappling hook. Also, enemies are keen to block on your every 2nd or 3rd hit, so combining your melee attacks with parkour is a must. The weapon drop is pretty generous from what you can find in boxes and on enemies. They always scale around your level but you can improve them with various mods. Those range from shock, freeze, bleed damage to durability. As for armor pieces, you can combine them into your own custom build or focus on a certain class. There are sets aimed for tanks (emphasis on health points and survivability on combat), rangers (emphasis on ranged damage aka bow) or you can match all the armor pieces into a set that will give you more experience in parkour. Speaking of experience, you earn it after completing quests, fighting, and parkouring. The skills points you earn are divided into two main parts, combat and parkour. One peculiar thing about all the unlockable skills is that I found none of them to be a “game-changer”. Sure, it’s nice to have a rotating jump or a wall run or a sliding kick but the combat is already a great mixture of melee and parkour by default so you’re not exactly missing out if you take your time in acquiring skills. And as I mentioned, later in the game you get to assign certain city resources to either Pacifists or Survivors. Giving more city resources to Pacifists will reward you with various traps and weapons placed all over the city, while the Survivors are keener on strategically placing ropes, gliding spots, and jump pads to help you while parkouring.

Visuals

Let’s be clear, the visual jump from Dying Light to Dying Light 2 is astounding. The characters are way more detailed, as well as zombies. I also love how you can completely change your melee weapon visually just by attaching different mods to it (while improving its stats along the way). Every piece of armor on you (pants, top, gloves, etc) is distinct so once you hit a decent level you can stop caring about armor stats and focus on the only thing that matters at the point – the fashion. And notable mention also goes to the incredibly detailed infrastructure and level design of Villedor. Sure, you unlock fast travel points pretty early in the game but they are no match for parkouring from one point to another, no matter how big is the distance between those. Start from any point of the city, put a map marker anywhere else on the map, and on your way to there you will have just one continuous run that includes slides, jumps, gliding, and a grappling hook. Parkouring in here takes some time to master but once you get the hang of it, you will be pretty proud of yourself for what you can do.

Audio

The adrenaline-filled parkour, combat, and night runs are so intense that it took me a while to pay attention to the music here. But once I got to the nearest safe house and decided to do more sidequests instead of just aimlessly running around, I noticed things. Things like muffled and slowed down dubstep while I’m climbing to one of the buildings, the shift in music once you unlock a radio tower, and the tense pounding of the drums as I am being chased by a pack of volatiles. The voice acting is also superb, with a notable mention of Lawan, voiced by Rosario Dawson.

Overall

Far from it that Dying Light 2 is a flawless game, but there are some hiccups that I only noticed after 30 or so hours of playtime. Some sidequests are pretty simplistic in nature and can only be described as filler quests. I remember a certain that required me to go to a building next to a quest giver, kill a few zombies, take the quest item and come back. All of it was done in under 3 minutes. Paragliding is also rough around the edges, especially in one sidequest that requires you to go through 27 checkpoints with tight turns and not enough speed. But these are all things that are far from having any negative impact on the game. All I can say is that Dying Light 2 is a definite improvement over the previous game, visually and in terms of gameplay. The wait was justified, even with all those delays. You know how they say – all good things are worth waiting for.

Demoniaca: Everlasting Night Review

Demoniaca: Everlasting Night

Developer: Aki
Publisher: Eastasiasoft
Platforms: PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch, PC
Release Date: 12 January 2022
Price: US$14.99 – Available Here

Overview

Released on PC in 2019 and just now brought to consoles, Demoniaca: Everlasting Night is another addition for the now long list of indie games inspired by Castlevania, Metroid and more recently, Dark Souls. Normally, those kinds of games are known as “Souls-like Metroidvanias”, or just “Metroidvanias“, but I think that a new definition is in order for these games. Maybe “Soulsvaniatroid”? “Metrosoulvania”? Silliness aside, Demoniaca tries to set itself apart from its peers by throwing fighting game mechanics into the mix. This an interesting concept, for sure, but does it work in a sub-genre known by its fluid and fast pacing?

Story

A horde of Demons invaded our realm massacring everyone in sight. The Demons’ intention was to rebuild the fabled Tower of Babel. The protagonist or “Demoniaca” is lucky enough to survive by having Demon blood spilt onto her. Now, after sewing her body back using her new found powers, Demoniaca sets off to the Tower of Babel to exact revenge on the Demons.

While exploring the Tower of Babel, the player will meet a variety of NPCs. From villain-like ones who seem to be plotting something, to others that are a little more friendly and will even help you, most of them look like they’re out of a heavy metal band while others are a direct homage to classic Metroidvanias and Souls games. Even then, there’s not much story or dialogue to be had, and what’s there didn’t grip me very much.

Gameplay

Demoniaca: Everlasting Night has all the features you’d expect from a title of its genre: A huge map to explore, items and new special moves to collect, RPG elements such as character leveling and whatnot. The combat is where Demoniaca really differs from other Metroidvanias; instead of equipping a sword and armor, Demoniaca prefers to solve her problems with her fists. In traditional fighting game fashion, the player can use weak and strong punches and kicks that can be combined to form short combos, special moves executed with a combination of d-pad and button inputs, a block button, and other abilities that you can unlock. These moves function just like in a fighting game, they’re weighty and slow with a lot of startup and recovery frames on strong and special moves. This means that the player will have to really commit to every punch they throw as they can leave Demoniaca open long enough to take a lot of damage. Some moves can stun some enemies briefly, but it’s up to the player to find out what works on what. As a general rule of thumb, approach enemies with caution as they can jump at you instantly, dishing a lot of damage, and also causing a variety of nasty status debuffs.

At the start of the game, the player is able to choose from two difficulty settings: Easy and classic. Easy would be the default difficulty that you can find in many metroidvanias; it does a good job of introducing the game and its mechanics without too much frustration. The problem with easy is that as the game progresses, you’ll find yourself a bit overpowered. Classic, on another hand, is more akin to a hard mode, and where the game’s flaws are more evident: The controls don’t respond too well, and feel as if they were transplanted directly from a fighting game; the combat becomes too one-sided, as enemies do a lot of damage and health items are scarce. You’ll find yourself just jumping over enemies most of the time so you can find some manner of restoring your life, or the next save point. There’s no autosave apart from a checkpoint that lets you retry a boss fight, so a save point is the first thing that the player must find upon reaching a new area. Also of note is how simple and monotone the overall level design is.

Visuals

Demoniaca: Everlasting Night is presented in a grimdark, heavy-metal like aesthetic. The introduction with the protagonist laying in a pool of blood, and subsequently sewing her body back, sets the horror tone that permeates the entire game well. There is also some “risqué” content in the form of nudity and suggestive imagery, but nothing too overbearing. The game is made entirely using 2D assets; while Demoniaca’s sprites and animations are mostly well done, the same can’t be said about the enemies. The backgrounds are also too static and drab for their own good.

Audio

The game’s soundtrack is composed mostly of ambient rock, and while they fit the game, they’re not exactly catchy or varied. The sound effects are ok, but also too repetitive.

Overall

As much as I love the concept of a fighting game inspired “Beat em’ up Metroidvania”, Demoniaca’s execution leaves a lot to be desired. The game can be interesting if you set your expectations accordingly, or if you’re itching for the next metroidvania.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Shows Off Final Class Trailer Alongside New Game Details

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands® Shows Off Final Class Trailer Alongside New Game Details

Latest update reveals the Graveborn and Spore Warden classes in addition to fresh looks at environments, enemies, game mechanics, and more

Today, 2K and Gearbox Software revealed the final two classes for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands® as part of a major update detailing an overview of the Multiclass system, a new character, and more exciting environments and enemies. The brand new “Welcome to Wonderlands #3” trailer and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Game Guide provide a deeper look, and a third Dev Diary offers intriguing perspectives straight from the Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands development team.

All Six Classes Revealed

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has a deep and highly customisable class system centred around the Multiclass mechanic that lets you mix and match abilities from six unique character skill trees. With Stabbomancer, Brr-Zerker, Spellshot, and Clawbringer revealed previously, the Graveborn and Spore Warden round out the classes available at launch in Wonderlands:

  • Graveborn are Death-touched acolytes who sacrifice health to unleash devastating Dark Magic attacks and become the phantasmal Reaper of Bones. They use their Demi-Lich Companion and sacrificial Action Skills to enact suffering upon their enemies, even at the cost of their own life force. Any Spell cast by the Graveborn will cause the Demi-Lich to cast a unique spell of their own, as well as triggering Kill Skills to summon hellish minions;
  • Spore Warden are masters of nature who summon tornadoes and launch volleys of arcane arrows into enemy lines alongside their toxin-spewing Mushroom Companion. They are Gun and Companion specialists that can significantly boost the abilities of their companions and allies while laying down withering firepower and slowing advancing enemies with Frost tornadoes. Speed and distance are a Spore Warden’s best friends.

New Multiclass System

The best part of being the Fatemaker – besides all the chaotic fantasy adventures and general badassery – is harnessing the power of two mythical classes to become a truly hybridised hero. When your journey begins, you’ll choose a starting class, wielding the strengths and abilities of a Brr-Zerker, Clawbringer, Graveborn, Spellshot, Spore Warden, or Stabbomancer. As you progress in Wonderlands, you’ll gain access to the Multiclass system and open up a secondary class slot, with a wide world of possible character builds. Each class is defined by a permanent Class Feat, two iconic Action Skills to choose between, and a skill tree loaded with passive abilities.

The Dangers of the Wonderlands

The vast and diverse world of the Wonderlands is slowly coming into view. Each area has its own robust side quests, and unique enemies, including:

  • Crackmast Cove be a haven for all manner of necrotised naval ne’er-do-wells, so ye’d best pack your blackest powder and most cutly lass, lest ye wish to share their fate! Also, it’s the only place in the game where you can talk like all piratical and no one’s allowed to judge you for it;
  • Drowned Abyss, the nightmarish expanse, lies beneath the ocean waves, below the wreckage of broken ships and even broken-er dreams. These sunken fissures are teeming with baddies like Coiled Queens roaming the depths and the uncool-kind-of-sirens luring unsuspecting marks, kevins, and kyles to their watery graves.

Facing Down Your Enemies

The world of Wonderlands is a wild and slightly warped take on high fantasy, with a seemingly endless stream of monsters to battle. Today we take a closer look at:

  • Pirates are a constant menace in the Wonderlands. Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of strictly non-alcoholic soda! Ye might think death would be enough to set these larcenous terrors of the seas on a more societally constructive career path … and ye’d be wrong! These guys are extremely committed to the bit. So hold on tight to your doubloons;

A New Character Joins the Fray

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is full of charming, hilarious, and off-the-wall characters. From the tyrannical Dragon Lord to Tiny Tina herself, journeying through the story brings you together with both familiar faces and brand new personalities:

  • Bones Three-Wood’s long, intricate, and sad backstory is so well thought-out and definitely written in advance that just hearing it will make you cry your kidneys out of your eyes. Leading from the prow, Bones only sails in the most dangerous waters, always emerging victorious and laden with booty. Or, he would if he still had a crew. Now he spends his days guarding the southern gate of the Briny Shelf. He sings songs to remind him of better days, when loot, love, and life seemed to last forever.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will launch on March 25, 2022 across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, and PC via the Epic Games Store exclusively at launch, and on other PC digital storefronts later in 2022. Pre-orders are now available across all launch platforms, and players can also visit playwonderlands.com to register for the game’s newsletter.

Developed by Gearbox Software, the anticipated ESRB rating for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is M by the OFLC. For screenshots, key art, and other visual assets, please visit newsroom.2k.com. To learn more, please visit playwonderlands.com and follow @PlayWonderlands on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Every Battle Pass owner will also have an opportunity to earn more points during the Double Battle Points event on February 5-6. This year, the Battle Pass includes 100 tiers and 135 rewards to earn before February 21. Progress through the tiers and obtain exclusive gear for the Captains and their teammates, as well as additional exclusive content. 30% of the revenue from this Battle Pass will support the Six Invitational 2022 prize pool, up to a maximum of $3 million USD.

The Six Invitational is the biggest and most anticipated Rainbow Six Siege event, celebrating a year of Siege with the fans and community. As announced in January, due to recent regulations and event restrictions in Quebec, Canada, the 2022 edition of the Six Invitational has been relocated to Stockholm, Sweden, where teams will compete in a LAN environment following strict sanitary measures. The health and safety of our players, fans, staff and partners being our top priority, the event will not host any live audience on site. The competition is the pinnacle of the Rainbow Six Siege competitive season and features the best teams in the world, all vying for the Championship title and a share of the prize pool.
