Overview

Do you know what’s seriously missing in gaming nowadays? A game where you can freely traverse the vast universe, occasionally engaging in space fights and random encounters while improving your ship and learning new abilities. Wow, that was suspiciously specific, right? And what a coincidence that I have something on my PC right now. Chorus seems like a game that takes the very best of Everspace while toning down the strategic aspects of it. It hands you the controls, tells you “here is how you shoot, here is how you fly, those are the enemies……..aaaand good luck!” Just the idea of participating in intense tense space dogfights and improving your ship and weapons sounds appealing on its own, but there are also other elements that can either make or break the game. Let’s see how it all exactly goes with Chorus.

Story

Chorus is a third-person space combat shooter where you take control of Nara, a former warrior of The Circle (more on them later), and she is joined on her space adventure by Forsaken a sentient space ship. Yes, your weaponized space vehicle isn’t just for show, it can talk to you and advise you on your journey. Sadly, you can’t control him directly (only Nara) but he is there to provide commentary on whatever is happening on the screen, warn you of incoming threats, and so on. Now, regarding The Circle; a long long time ago there was a dark age for the universe of Chorus. The galaxy was ravaged by constant wars and people longed for peace as the Great Prophet promised them. He was a charismatic figure that quickly rose to fame. He became the inspiration for all the people in the galaxy and eventually their leader. Member of The Circle dedicated their lives to erasing the source of all misery, the selfish human discord, and strive for bringing absolute harmony to all living beings: The Chorus. Supported by the mysterious galactic force called “the Faceless”, what started as a religious movement had turned into a bloody crusade, conquering the galaxy at an exponential rate. And that is where you come in. Bring down The Circle (with Great Prophet included) and make everlasting peace the old-fashioned way – by shooting down everyone who is not on your side.

Gameplay

After a mildly sluggish tutorial segment, I was launched into open space and came upon a great epiphany – this is fun! Sure, the controls are kinda unorthodox compared to what you might expect from your average arcadey third-person space shooter. Controller triggers for flying and shooting, right stick to control the direction, and the left one for evading and activating subsonic flight. It takes no more than 10 minutes to get used to but the fun doesn’t stop there. Eventually, you’ll learn how to upgrade the hull (the HP of your ship) and the shield and even learn some abilities along the way. Throughout the story, you will unlock “rites”, the special abilities that bind Nara and Forsaken. Some are pretty fun although you only get the near the end of the game, such as telekinesis, and rite of the storm. There is nothing more fun than taking a short break from shooting the enemies with conventional weapons and throwing them around with telekinesis into nearby asteroids or even other ships. On the other hand, a rite of the storm is pretty much a fancy name for an EMP in Chorus. A well-placed “zap” into enemies will stun them and leave them completely defenseless for your battling gun, lasers, and missiles. And I definitely have to mention a rite of the spear, a special ability that (you guessed it) transforms you and your ship into a huge spear made of energy where you can pierce through the enemies. So while the selection of conventional weapons in the game isn’t exactly huge, mixing them with your abilities in space dogfights never stops being fun.

Visuals

With this being an arcadey third-person space shooter, you will probably spend more time admiring your surroundings and vast emptiness of space rather than on your ship. I think the folks at Deep Silver Fishlabs expected that so they put extra effort into the level design and making what little life in the universe is left seem visually pleasing. There are six main sections of the game where you are free to fly around, complete the main and side objectives and engage in occasional random encounters. What’s interesting is that each of those sections is distinct, with its own identity. For example, the Stega Central area is well presented as the huge graveyard for stray spaceships and it is pretty much the empire of asteroids. Not much life there, however, once you get to Nimika System later you will see it’s the exact opposite. A bustling and highly industrialized corner of space, well-populated with all types of enemies in the game.

Audio

Not much to be said when it comes to audio, but I always held an opinion that a good soundtrack and voice acting of the game can also be the once you never notice, only the bad one can stand out. I can’t exactly write essays when it comes to the soundtrack here, except just pointing out that it’s there. It’s not exceptionally good and it’s not bad, it merely does its job. Regarding the voice acting, there is a lot of it. I never imagined I’d find a game with too much of it but it finally happened. The playful banter and occasional chit-chat between Nara and Forsaken can be amusing at first but it slowly devolves into being insufferable. Later on, at the start and finish of every main and side quest, you will always be followed by (in this order) a short comment on the situation by Nara with Forsaken, followed by a comment from Forsaken to Nara, and finally a comment from to herself. After more than 10 hours of play, I was seriously on the edge of trying to mute them both somehow.

Overall

With all that said, I think Chorus is a game well deserving of your time. What really puts it above the rest is the unique setting and incredibly flexible dogfights. Once you get the hang of all of your weapons and abilities, every enemy encounter will play out in a completely different way. Zapping enemies with lasers, showering them with a barrage of missiles, and making swiss cheese of them with a Gatling gun never gets old.

CRSED: F.O.A.D. shooter got “Fangs”

This update brings a new playable character and cross-platform multiplayer

Gaijin Entertainment and Darkflow Software announce the release of the “Fangs” Content Update for the brutal online shooter CRSED: F.O.A.D. It brings a new Champion, the vampire Bram van Helsing, as well as new mystical rituals, weapons, cool costumes, a myriad of cosmetic items and a deadly aspen stake.

Bram van Helsing is a wealthy Dutch nobleman, a hematophagous occultist that practiced so-called “unity ceremonies” with his minions. Activists wrote statements to the police every day with requests to stop the “debauchery” going on but failed to achieve anything. At some point Bram’s compulsive desire to drink blood had begun to lead to sleep problems and ultimately made him go to a Rehab center for treatment. There he met another patient who told him rumors about the F.O.A.D. murder games, a perfect event to satisfy a vampire’s thirst.

The “Flock of bats” ability allows Bram to levitate and move quickly in bat form. While in this state, a Champion gets “vampirism” status and 50% of the damage done to the enemy is returned in the form of health, while his transformation into a flock of bats allows him to move at high speed. Damage to the Champion is reduced by 50%, and during the “Sun Eclipse” ritual by 70%. On the other hand, the “Killing Sun” ritual is quite bad for a vampire’s health.  There is also a new kind of gravestone called  “Coffin of the Undead” available to players. After destroying it, a greedy enemy will be attacked by a ruthless Zombie.

The update not only brings new content, but also allows PlayStation and Xbox players to play together in the same sessions, as well as join cross-platform squads and communicate with each other.

More information on the “Fangs” update is available at the official CRSED: F.O.A.D. website: www.crsed.net

War Thunder uncovers the secrets of Winged Lions

Players are getting the Israeli aviation tech tree and cruisers equipped with reconnaissance aircraft

Gaijin Entertainment announces that the next major Content Update “Winged Lions” for the military online action War Thunder will be released later this December. It will bring the Israeli aviation closed beta test, launchable shipborne reconnaissance aircraft, dozens of new air, ground and naval vehicles and more.

Since the Israeli Air Force was formed after the end of World War II, the Israeli aircraft lineup begins immediately from rank IV. While researching new machines, players will follow the way that the Israeli engineers have chosen. Domestically assembled Spitfires were one the first planes in the force later joined by French Mirage III fighters that became the base for developing original Israeli Kfir (literally, “lion cub”) machines, while the US gives access to F-4 fighter jets and A-4 attackers. Aviation of Israel mainly consists of imported aircraft, but with a distinctive local feel, as they are highly modified, adapted to local conditions and equipped with new weapons. Their arsenal includes unique rockets with a shape-charge warhead, new to the game calibers of aircraft bombs, air-to-air missiles and even guided bombs!

All owners of early access packs will be able to take part in the closed testing of the Israeli aviation immediately after the “Winged Lions” update is live. After the end of closed testing, to start researching the Israeli Air Force aviation, the player will need at least one purchased aircraft of rank IV in any of the following playable nations: USA, Great Britain, France or Israel.

The update brings ship-launched reconnaissance aircraft, a feature that many large WW2 era warships were capable of. The reconnaissance aircraft will allow the players  to better examine the enemy grouping, scout a ship hidden behind rocks, fight enemy aircraft, destroy an enemy boat with cannons and machine guns, or damage an enemy cruiser or destroyer with bombs. Just like regular seaplanes, reconnaissance hydroplanes will be able to capture points – a small plane can decide the outcome of a battle for large ships. Powerful and fast German battlecruiser Scharnhorst that is equipped with such aircraft will be added to War Thunder in the “Winged Lions” update.

Ground vehicle fans will get several modern tanks like Challenger 2 TES (2008) and Leclerc SXXI (2003). The most interesting one is probably Type 10, the latest Japanese MBT that entered the JSDF service in 2012. One of the main new features of Type 10 is the automatic loader located in the rear of the tank, which increases the rate of fire. The new diesel engine doubles the reverse speed in comparison with the predecessor. The Type 10 also receives a new APFSDS round, that has the same name as the tank itself – Type 10. It complements the range of shells, already familiar with the JM12A1 HEATFS and the JM33 APFSDS rounds.

Follow the news at the official website to get more information on the “Winged Lions”.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars Review

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars

Developer: Square-Enix/Alim
Publisher: Square-Enix
Platforms: PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), Switch, PC
Release Date: 28 October 2021
Price: US$29.99 – Available Here

Overview

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is the newest game from the creative mind of Yoko Taro. One of the creators of the Drakengard and Nier series, Taro gained a small cult following throughout the years. Taro’s games feature themes of existentialism, and they also touch on some “taboo” subjects such as female sexuality; including but not limited to abortion, gender identity, and more. After the success achieved by Nier Automata, Taro gained immense popularity, especially in the West. Voice of Cards isn’t part of the Nier canon and was originally pitched by Taro as a social mobile game. With the intervention of producer Yosuke Saito, development shifted to consoles and PC as a small-scale project. However, what Voice of Cards lacks in “high production values” is compensated by the artistry and innovation in regards to its presentation.

Story

Voice of Cards tells the tale of a dragon that, after having been defeated once, returns to once more threaten the peace now enjoyed by the people. A hefty reward is offered by the queen to those who are able to slay the dragon. As Ash, the money-hungry, “self-proclaimed hero” along with his monster companion Mar, the player must overcome a series of quests and enlist the help of people who have their own personal reasons for joining Ash; some related to the dragon, some not so much. Other parties are also in search of the dragon. Is the dragon really the cause of all the world’s problems? None of that matters to Ash, or so it appears. And so, Ash departs on his quest to get rich.

As with everything in the game, the story is told as if you were in a session of tabletop Dungeons and Dragons with a snarky “gamemaster” narrating everything. The gamemaster’s words are absolute, which basically renders most of your story-related choices inconsequential. This is standard JRPG story-telling and allows the game to flow in a very straightforward and easy-going way.

Gameplay

Think of Voice of Cards as a traditional, old-school JRPG. Something like the Dragon Quest titles of old in regards to its progression and overall presentation. The game is laid out exactly like a tabletop game with the player controlling a piece that can be moved along the card-filled board. The towns, NPCs, etc. are all represented as up-sided cards where your piece can land, thus triggering a dialogue or event. While in the field, most of its terrain is covered in down-sided cards which are flipped once your piece is right next to or adjacent to a card; this manner of exploration is interesting because it encourages the player to keep moving their piece to reveal what lies beneath the next card. It could be just another piece of terrain, a chest, an NPC, and so on. As your piece is placed upon certain tiles, random events might trigger that prompts the player to choose an option or roll a dice to see what the outcome will be.

Battles occur randomly as you move your piece through the field or dungeons. Upon encountering an enemy, the game will switch to a smaller table that is used exclusively for dealing with battles. The battles are turn-based with each character acting according to their agility status. Instead of MP, the game uses a system in which gems are accumulated each turn. Every turn, your party will receive one gem regardless of whether you used a simple action such as a normal attack or if you passed a character’s turn. Stronger and effect-inflicting attacks or actions will require the use of gems. Although the battles flow well and relatively fast, they are the weakest point of the game. The battles provide no challenge whatsoever: you can just mash buttons if you want while in battle without fear of enemies killing even one of your party members. Just have the latest equipment that you can buy in towns and you’re set. The battles continue in this braindead pattern throughout most of the game. The difficulty spikes a bit towards the end, but by then, the battles will have mostly outstayed their welcome. I can come up with only one reason for the game designers to have handled the battles like this. They did it for the sake of accessibility; you don’t even need to read most of the text since the gamemaster will do it for you. There’s no difficulty selector, and the game can even be played with one hand most of the time, although not for the kind of accessibility some of you might think.

The lack of challenge can be a huge detractor to the game’s overall enjoyment, especially for some more old-school players. Even then, there’s a lot to love in Voice of Cards. Its presentation keeps things fresh. The story at first is your “tired and true” trope about a group of characters who want to save the world, but let’s remind ourselves that this is still a game with heavy influence from Yoko Taro and his team. There is no shortage of events and secrets to discover which will pique a player’s curiosity. There’s even a game of cards… inside a game of cards; it serves as a nice distraction and can even be played with three other players; provided you are in the same room since there’s no online multiplayer to speak of.

Visuals

Browsing through the images in this review is basically most of what you’re going to see in the game. The graphics are super simple but charming. The card artwork might not resonate with everyone because of their anime style. I’d say that the card’s artworks are very pleasing to my eyes. The navigable field leaves a lot to the imagination, and to me, this is on purpose: every time you enter a new city or dungeon you’ll have only tiles with the occasional fog or some other effect. The same NPC and shop cards are reused a lot of the time. It’s with the help of the gamemaster who will narrate with precision what exactly stands before you and your own imagination that you’ll have a clear idea of where you are and the type of situation you find yourself in.

Audio

Keiichi Okabe returns once again, not as the main composer, but as a contributor of sorts. Nevertheless, the music composition in Voice of Cards is beautiful: the melodies take inspiration from Celtic themes and traditions. The only downside about the music is the lack of variety regarding the number of tracks. The audio design is excellent: the sounds of the cards flipping, the dice rolling against the wooden table and whatnot are very relaxing and will remind you of those old GURPS sessions or, at least, make you imagine how it is or used to be.

Overall

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars promised a true JRPG adventure with an engaging story told only with a table, cards, and some dice. Featuring big names from the JRPG scene, Voice of Cards delivers on its ideas and story but sets aside one important aspect of any JRPG: its combat is borderline frustrating. In fact, this might drive away many players who will dislike the game entirely because of the combat. I won’t say that the lack of challenge and diversity to the combat are minor setbacks; they take a lot out of what was primed to be one of the best RPG experiences this year. That said, there’s enough quality content in Voice of Cards that will make it worth your while, especially if you’re a fan of a good old tabletop RPG session.
