Interview with Susan Chang, head of Quill Game Studios

0

We are joined by Susan Chang, one of the folks behind A Summer with the Shiba Inu and Death Becomes You. While it is a relatively young dev studio, they quickly made a name for themselves with unique premises for visual novels (seriously, who doesn’t want to play as our favorite meme dog) and notable art style. Today we are going to learn a bit more about their latest PC release and maybe get the first scoop about their upcoming projects.

Hello Susan, thanks for taking some time to do this. I played your previous game, A Summer with Shiba Inu, and loved it. How did that release go? I’d imagine presenting your game out there to an audience of millions can be somewhat overwhelming, as it is exciting

Thank you for playing our game! The release for the first game went surprisingly well, especially on consoles. As a developer, I try to keep in mind my own perspective as an avid video game collector and player – that as long as some people really enjoyed it, even if it’s just a handful of people, I’ve achieved my goal. Thankfully, those expectations were exceeded!

2. Your new release, Death Becomes You, seems to be quite a departure from cute dogs and a quirky storyline. What was the inspiration behind this game?

I wanted to tell a different kind of story, and a magical school setting (with humans) works very well for the concept this time around. The dog universe (of the first game, A Summer with the Shiba Inu) will be the setting of one or more of Quill Studios’ future games, though, with one already being in progress! So stay tuned! One fun fact, though – the default main character name for Death Becomes You is Sidney, while the main character of A Summer with the Shiba Inu is named Syd…

3. I also noticed that Death Becomes You has a visible upgrade when it comes to art and visuals. I’m wondering if there are some new members of Quill Game Studios or are you mostly pulling the strings behind everything?

I’m mostly managing everything, but I’ve brought on new team members (art, programming) so that I can focus better on what I do best, more on the creative vision.  I’ve also learned a lot from releasing my previous game, and was able to improve on the development process and how to use the art and game UI elements to execute the vision better in almost all aspects!

4. With a number of 50,000 Steam games and counting (with dozens of them being released daily), how challenging is it for an aspiring indie dev to be noticed on the storefront? A Summer with Shiba Inu was very well received so I imagine your name should give your a decent headstart when it comes to this release

I’m hoping that with each release, that Quill Studios gets more and more folks that look forward to our games! It is still a challenge for indie developers, even with released projects, since we’d still be competing for attention regardless. Spending time marketing is definitely worth it – I’m trying to take my own advice and do even better on this front for Quill Studios’ future games.

5. What is next for Quill Game Studios now? After some Shiba Inus and murder mysteries, what other games could we expect down the road?

We’re working on two other games right now! One is a second game set in the dog universe of A Summer with the Shiba Inu, and we’ll announce its name soon, once we get some more key art. The other game we’re conceptualizing is about the story of a woman who’s just returned from her travels. We look forward to sharing those with you all!

World of Warships New Season of Ranked Battles Brings Superships Alongside Huge Graphical Improvements In Update 0.10.10

World of Warships New Season of Ranked Battles Brings Superships Alongside Huge Graphical Improvements In Update 0.10.10

The “Arms Race” battle type also returns as Soviet aircraft carriers sail out of early access

11th November – World of Warships’ latest update 0.10.10 is packed full of changes, including the fifth season of Ranked Battles with superships, the return of popular battle type ”Arm’s Race” and huge graphical improvements to the game, alongside much more.

Massive Visual Improvements

World of Warships prides itself on offering stunning visual displays of naval combat for gamers and military history enthusiasts across the world, and this update is set to make the game’s visuals bolder and better than ever before.

Firstly, the simulation of water on all maps has been completely changed. The new simulation system allows you to get waves of almost any shape and height, and also makes their dynamics realistic, with ships visually swaying on the waves. Some maps have also been updated with HD textures and animated objects. Vegetation has been improved and it looks more realistic on all maps. Besides the surface, changes have been made on the underwater world as well, which continue to be vastly improved as Submarines continue to roll-out in the game.

Superships in Ranked and Co-op Battles

As World of Warships enters into its fifth season of ranked battles, a new range of superships is here to shake things up, as well as changes to the existing superships. In addition to the existing super ships Satsuma and Hannover, there will be 4 more super-ships: Condé, Annapolis, Yamagiri and Zorkiy.

In true supership style, these new vessels will have unique features that offer players alternative gameplay tactics and diversify decision-making in battle. Conde, Annapolis and Zorkiy can boast an alternate firing mode, which makes all their turrets fire several salvos in rapid succession. The Yamagiri, meanwhile, offers two types of torpedoes, that can be exchanged during the battle enabling players to prioritise either range, speed, or damage in their combat engagements. The existing superships, Satsuma and Hannover will see some changes with their unique feature – Combat Instructions. Instead of it being automatically triggered, players will now be able to activate it themselves at the most opportune moment in the battle.

All six superships will be available for rent from random bundles that can be purchased from the Armory for a new temporary resource – Supership Tokens. Tokens can be obtained for completing special combat missions on Tier X ships. Superships will be available to play in both Ranked and Co-op battles.

Soviet Aircraft Carriers Enter the Fray

With the release of Update 0.10.10, “Komsomolets”, “Serov”, “Pobeda” and “Admiral Nakhimov” will be available for research to all players. These formidable ships will offer players devastating attacks with their whole squadron, rocket boosters, long-range torpedoes as well as skip bombers.

The second week of the Update will bring five thematic groups of combat missions, upon its completion players will be rewarded with a historical Soviet battleship Novorossiysk, a commander with 6 skill points and a port slot.

As the Soviets complete their full release, German battleships Tier III-IX continue their early access through Update 0.10.10. The iconic Hamburg port has been decked out, and players can trade German tokens for these ships, and with the release of the update, a special combat mission will be available, awarding players with a themed patch and a flag.

Arms Race

The popular Arms race battle type is back, as Wargaming gradually prepares to launch the game mode into Random Battles in the future. Players will need to coordinate with their team in a 12 vs 12 format, capturing special boost zones as reinforcements continue to arrive. Improving on the original format, the new iteration will see several changes including two new buffs that will increase armament damage and HP pool of ships.

This update also includes significant changes to Submarines as they continue to be tested by the community. Finally, festive battle performance bonuses arrived early this year. Starting from Tier V onwards players can grab Coal, Steel, or a special temporary resource called New Year Certificates that can be exchanged for Santa’s Gift containers in the next update.

Star Citizen – Alpha 3.15: Deadly Consequences Update Brings Game-Changing New Features Like Medical Gameplay, Bombing, Looting, and More

New Update from Cloud Imperium Games Raises the Stakes for Players with Features Highlighting the Balance of Risk and Reward

LOS ANGELESNov. 10, 2021Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) announced today, the release of the Star Citizen – Alpha 3.15: Deadly Consequences update. Today’s update introduces an array of exciting new systems for players, focusing on new hospitals and medical gameplay, including injury and recovery mechanics. In addition, players can look forward to significant updates to personal inventory systems that will make managing loadouts a more tactical endeavor. Updates to these major feature sets will heighten the level of risk vs. reward around players’ strategic choices in-game. The Star Citizen – Alpha 3.15: Deadly Consequences update marks another major milestone in CIG’s progress and continued commitment to its players to develop the most ambitious and transparent games development project in history – and follows an exciting first look at the next full star system in development for Star Citizen revealed at CitizenCon 2951.

“On behalf of the entire development team, I am thrilled to launch Alpha 3.15: Deadly Consequences, which adds vital new gameplay and content like healing, looting, and bombing to Star Citizen,” said Star Citizen Creative Director Chris Roberts. “We’re especially excited for the Tier 1 implementation of Medical gameplay and the hard gameplay choices that come withPhysical Inventory, which brings us one step closer to our shared vision for the best universe sim ever.”

Star Citizen Alpha 3.15: Deadly Consequences update key features include:

  • Player Health System: Players can now be “downed” if they are wounded and can be revived by players to get back into the fight. While downed players can call for a rescue from nearby players, they can still be killed by other players and NPCs. Killed players will leave their items behind, which can then be looted by opportunistic adversaries. Injuries can also be applied to specific body parts, including the head, torso and limbs, that now impact gameplay until the injury is healed. For example, head injuries can now trigger dizziness and a wounded limb may make it more difficult to aim. These injuries come in three tiers from Tier 1 (most severe) to Tier 3 (least severe).
  • Healing and Healing Tools: Players can temporarily heal themselves and other players with a variety of new healing tools, including the CuraLife Medical Gun and Multi-tool Healing Beam attachment. Healing tools will also increase the player’s blood drug level, which can come with deadly side effects if allowed to rise, including blurred vision, muffled audio, and even a “downed” state. The addition of these new healing mechanics and tools opens up a new gameplay profession, as players can adopt a medic-style role to travel the ‘verse and heal other players.
  • Hospitals and Medbeds: New hospitals can be found in Orison, GrimHex, New Babbage, and Rest stop clinics. Hospitals can be set as respawn locations following player death and can also be used to heal critical injuries.
  • Personal Inventory: Players can now manage their player loadout, personal inventory, and also external containers with this improved system. With the NikNax asset manager app, players can now locate and track inventory previously tied to specific locations, vehicles, off-ship crates, and on their person. This major update also introduces strategic inventory management decisions to players. Before beginning their adventure, players may need to make tough decisions for the road ahead, choosing between more weaponry, ammunition, or healing equipment. Running with a crew of likeminded players also introduces options for players to fill specific roles in terms of items and gear they bring to the mission.
  • Dynamic Loot Generation: New dynamic loot generation leverages the existing Harvestables system to dynamically generate containers holding randomized loot. These containers can be generated across a planet surface, or at designated spawn points. With more rewards for pilots willing to take the risk, exploring the ‘verse has never been more rewarding.
  • Origin 400i: Originally revealed at CitizenCon 2951, the Origin 400i makes its flyable debut in the Alpha 3.15: Deadly Consequences update. Designed for pilots in need of a vessel that can deliver in terms of speed, safety, and style, the Origin 400i is a ship that exudes luxury with its sleek design along with superb fuel efficiency and defenses that will take players to the far reaches of the galaxy.
  • Crusader Hercules Starlifter A2: The A2 bomber has been used to devastating effect in airborne assaults, search and rescue operations, and landing initiatives. With more than double the firepower of the M2, and a custom bomb bay capable of delivering a staggering payload, the A2 caters to anyone hauling massive amounts of cargo through potentially unfriendly skies. Following the release of the C2 and M2, the arrival of the Hercules Starlifter A2 closes out Crusader Industries’ Starlifter line.
  • New Bombing Mechanic: The new bombing mechanic introduced with the Starlifter A2 adds extra layers of tactical gameplay, allowing players to devise new strategies in both offensive and defensive scenarios. New bomb UI offers pilots a hi-tech solution for targeting, while retaining skill-based, manual aiming to place the perfect shot for maximum damage. That shot won’t come easy, as pilots will have to avoid inflicting friendly damage in the resulting blast radius as well as defend against countermeasures such as ground turrets and anti-aircraft missiles.
  • New Infiltrate/Defend Missions: New mission modifiers that challenge players with defending objectives against waves of enemies in all-out assaults or avoiding detection have been introduced with both lawful and unlawful variants.

About Cloud Imperium Games

Cloud Imperium Games is a new kind of independent studio dedicated to delivering AAA games outside the established publisher system. It was founded in 2012 by renowned visionary game developer Chris Roberts (Wing Commander series, Freelancer, Privateer), Sandi Gardiner, and international media lawyer and producer Ortwin Freyermuth (Carlito’s Way, Shattered, Das Boot – Director’s Cut), with industry veteran and studio director Erin Roberts (Lego videogame series, Starlancer, Privateer) joining the team in 2013. Cloud Imperium Games is creating Star Citizen, a record-shattering, largely crowdfunded space sim, and Squadron 42, a Hollywood-caliber, story-driven single-player game set in the same universe. Cloud Imperium Games operates in “open development” – sharing progress and updates in near real time. This paradigm-shifting development process (game development usually occurs behind closed doors) gives the community an unprecedented look at Star Citizen and Squadron 42’s development and allows direct feedback and interaction between players and developers, thereby ensuring that the games being developed are what players want to play.
