Nowadays, the videogame market abounds with story-driven games. Especially common on the indie scene, these games usually come in the form of first-person, dialogue-filled walking simulators. “movie-like” games aren’t a new trend in the industry as we had games like this decades ago, games like Dragon’s Lair, Flashback, Another World… Video games have always strived to be like movies to some degree. Comments like, “Look at the graphics on this game! It’s got four megabits of memory” or “This game features a thousand polygons per frame, it almost looks like a movie” etc. were commonplace back then and parroted by videogame magazines and players alike. Well, we got our wish it seems as videogames more and more look and feel like movies. Enter White Shadows, the first game by indie developer Monokel. White Shadows borrows its aesthetic and gameplay mechanics from games like Limbo and Inside, relying on silent film storytelling, platforming, and some puzzles. However, White Shadows is more of a sensory experience than what you’ll find in Limbo.
Story
“Don’t be a burden, kill yourself today.” With this sentence, the demo version of the game ends. I couldn’t find this same sentence in the final game, but I feel it gives us a good idea of what the story is about. In a dystopian not-so-distant future, people… I mean, animals are forced to live underground. With no sunlight to be found anymore, the animals rely on electricity to have some manner of light. As is the norm in any society, everyone has their place in the social pyramid, with birds being the exception or so it seems… As a young raven girl who managed to escape being battery fuel, you must navigate a monochrome junkyard and help her reunite her people to save the world survive.
There’s no dialogue in the game. Text appears only in the form of political propaganda written on billboards or as you’d see in a silent film, although these texts are sparse. White Shadows‘ story unfolds with the use of its visuals and sounds. It’s a tale that’s mostly felt than understood; this is White Shadow’s biggest strength and also its weakness: I feel that the game relies too heavily on its imagery to present the story. I normally like this manner of silent and ambiguous story-telling. It spares you from walls of text and dialogue choices that amount to nothing in many cases, but White Shadows could certainly use a bit more exposition.
Gameplay
White Shadows uses only two buttons and the left analog stick for movement. One button for jumping and the other for interacting with things found in the game; there are no prompts, glowing signals, QTEs, etc. That doesn’t mean it’s a hard game, quite the opposite: Unlike Limbo, the puzzles aren’t designed to block your path but to provide some manner of gameplay as most of the time you’ll be walking from a side to another while getting dragged into tubes. If it wasn’t for the slow pace and dark nature of White Shadows, I’d think this was a Sonic spinoff. Jokes aside, as I said at the beginning of this review, White Shadows is a story-driven game. That means that it’s much more focused on absorbing the player with its heavy atmosphere than providing a traditional “gamey” game.
Visuals
The black and white graphics combined with the overall oppressive atmosphere and brutal imagery should give White Shadows a dreadful and generally unpleasant feel. The problem is that the game uses a cartoonish style to depict its characters; the scene with the suicidal pigs looks like something out of a Looney Tunes episode. Regardless, the overall beauty and scale of the game is something Monokel should be proud of. Much of the appeal of White Shadows lies in its emblematic scenes which are incorporated masterfully throughout the game.
Audio
The audio in White Shadows is comprised mostly of famous classical pieces. Surfing atop a high-speed train while Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries plays is an exhilarating feeling. Other famous composers are also featured, but Ride of the Valkyries is by far the most played piece throughout the game. The sound effects and audio design also contribute a lot to the experience.
Overall
Much like the films and games from which it takes inspiration, White Shadows is a game that beyond entertaining the player but also aims to make one think and feel. The game lasts for, give or take, around two hours. Its short duration, affordable price point, and low difficulty makes White Shadows accessible for anyone. For those in doubt, there’s a demo available on Steam.

BAFTA-nominated composer Takeshi Furukawa scoring the original soundtrack for this beautiful off-earth odyssey
Gothenburg, Sweden – December 10th, 2021 – Thunderful Publishing and independent developer Wishfully Studios have released a new trailer for highly anticipated cinematic puzzle adventure Planet of Lana. This stunning one-shot sequence highlights the visual and gameplay contrasts in the game’s breathtaking hand-painted world.
Planet of Lana’s debut announcement trailer introduced us to scenic platforming and stealth gameplay through a lush world of green fields, rich forests and sparkling blue water. The new trailer gives us an exciting peek at another section of the game, showcasing a breakneck chase sequence through an epic desert environment. This trailer also unveils more variants of the mysterious machines that have crashed onto Lana’s peaceful world. The smaller, spider-like droids first seen on the original reveal interact with larger flying automatons, while towering, monolithic walkers threaten to crush our heroes as they press on towards a mysterious destination…
During the game’s appearance at The Game Awards yesterday, it was also revealed that Planet of Lana will be scored by multi award-winning and BAFTA-nominated composer Takeshi Furukawa. Thunderful and Wishfullly Studios are delighted to have Takeshi, known for his work on The Last Guardian, the Star Wars franchise and Star Trek: Enterprise, putting his incredible talent to work composing the game’s soundtrack.
“I’m always attracted to projects with a strong visual identity in combination with touching stories and universal themes,” said Takeshi Furukawa, composer of Planet of Lana. “But beyond the opportunity to provide emotional weight to this beautiful world, what intrigued me even more is the integral role that music plays in the story of the game.”
Set on an alien world, Planet of Lana tells the story of Lana and her loyal animal companion Mui as they embark on a rescue mission to save her sister. This touching tale is experienced through the lens of a cinematic side scrolling gameplay format, as players explore a colourful world full of stunning environments, strange creatures and dangerous machines. From a gameplay perspective, Planet of Lana is an adventure filled with daring platforming, engaging puzzles, tense stealth sequences and a companion mechanic that connects Lana and Mui, allowing for unique gameplay and story moments using their abilities in tandem.
This off-world odyssey is tied together with a completely unique visual style that combines hand-drawn artwork, complex parallax layering and subtle use of 3D graphics to give the look of an interactive painting. On high-end PCs and Xbox Series X, Planet of Lana will run at a native resolution of 4K (2160p) at 60 frames per second, allowing its incredible artwork to come to life. Further details on Planet of Lana’s gameplay, story and performance profiles for other devices in the Xbox family of consoles will be shared at a later date.
Planet of Lana stunning hand-painted visuals, unforgettable story and epic soundtrack will be coming exclusively to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC via Steam® and the Windows 10 Store in late 2022.

Victor Saltzpyre gets up close and personal as the Warrior Priest
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, December 10, 2021. Independent developer Fatshark is proud to bring a new career to the award-winning and multi-million selling Warhammer: Vermintide2.
The Warrior Priest is a new career for Victor Saltzpyre and is the fourth career released to Vermintide 2. Saltzpyre will get up close and personal with enemies when he takes on the role of a Warrior Priest of Sigmar. Powered by his normal fearless and sassy behavior, Saltzpyre shines extra bright when throwing around a mighty hammer infused with Sigmar’s powers.
“We are happy to launch the fourth new career to Warhammer: Vermintide 2, and this time it’s Victor Saltzpyre that gets the spotlight with the Warrior Priest of Sigmar.” says Martin Wahlund, CEO Fatshark.
The Warrior Priest of Sigmar includes a new talent tree, new weapon types, new abilities, and a new Warrior Priest skin amongst other things. The DLC hits Steam and Xbox today and will be available for Playstation in January 2022.
Warrior Priest Features
New weapons: the Reckoner Great Hammer and the Skull-Splitter Hammer & Blessed Tome
New talent tree and new abilities
New voice lines and character skin.
New weapon combinations
Skull-Splitter Hammer and Blessed Tome
Skull-Splitter Hammer and Shield
Dual-wield Skull-Splitter hammers
Q&A Mårten Stormdal and Markus Olsén – The Warrior Priest Fatshark is bringings the fourth career for Warhammer: Vermintide 2. Fatshark’s Narrative Director Mårten Stormdal and Lead Game Designer Markus Olsén explains why this is not to be missed.
The Warrior Priest is the fourth new career for the five heroes launched so far. Previously Fatshark has released the Grail Knight for Markus Kruber, Bardin Goreksson’s Outcast Engineer, and Kerillian’s Sister of the Thorn. Now it’s time for Victor Saltzpyre to get the spotlight.
The Warrior Priest of Sigmar is probably the most requested career there is, and for a good reason.
Tell us about the Warrior Priest. Warrior Priests have been a central part of Warhammer for a very long time and who would do it better than our own Sigmarite, Victor Saltzpyre. Warrior Priests are the armoured fist of the cult of Sigmar, members of the order of the silver hammer, they are tasked with protecting the Empire from any enemy, within or without. They may join or even take command of armies in the field, or wander the lands, protecting the borders and help out at temples they pass by talking to initiates or even preaching at the Throng.
Some priests aren’t only courageous fighters but are especially blessed and can call upon interventions and miracles from Sigmar himself to aid the pure of heart in the war against the enemies of the Empire.
What is unique with the Warrior Priest? The Warrior Priest of Sigmar, like the Slayer and Grail Knight before him, will not have traditional ranged weaponry available. He relies on his damage mitigating armor and skills coupled with hard hitting hammers to get the job done. His Career Skill is a protective shield that can be put on himself or his party members. This is the first time we’ve made the Career Skill a beneficial skill in this way and it makes him a very strong frontliner and supporting character
How do you use the Warrior Priest career best? The Warrior Priest of Sigmar has an affinity for smashing Chaos Warriors into the ground. And he’s also an excellent choice for carrying Skaven Grimoires around since he’s unaffected by their curse among other things. In any party he can have a strong impact when faced with danger by placing his protective shield on someone in the front. He can also shield allies who’ve been incapacitated to buy them time or free them. The nature of most hammers and especially coupled with his talent tree will make him great at controlling the enemies by staggering them. He also has a few talent options that enable him to heal allies in dire situations.
Which are the cosmetic items that you can pick up with the release of the Warrior Priest? The Warrior Priest of Sigmar has some great cosmetic items. Console players have the cosmetics included in the Warrior Priest, meanwhile on PC players can pick them up through the Cosmetic Upgrade.
There is a new unique character skin and a recoloured option as well. New weapon skins, paintings and more are included.. everything you need to make your Warrior Priest of Sigmar unique.
Now, we all know that there are five characters, and that means that one has not gotten a new career. Anything you can tell us about the next career or when it’s going to be released. Maybe what hero will get the next career? A lot of players might have figured out by now who will get the next career, but let’s leave it at that. If you want to know more on who, what career, and when it will arrive you can always follow our social media and subscribe to our newsletter. Marketing will give us ice-cream for that answer – maybe even two scoops.

Will Arnett and Ashly Burch introduce the latest look at the upcoming fantasy looter shooter from Gearbox Software and 2K
During The Game Awards today, 2K and Gearbox Software debuted an all-new look at Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands®, the highly anticipated, fantasy-fuelled take on the looter shooter genre coming March 25, 2022. Appearing on stage from the all-star celebrity cast were Will Arnett (the Dragon Lord) and Ashly Burch (Tiny Tina), who introduced the trailer with nods to the epic characters they voice in-game.
Today’s trailer offered a sneak peek at the story of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, asthe utterly unpredictable Tiny Tina guides players through a game of the tabletop role-playing adventure Bunkers & Badasses. As the Fatemaker, you hold the story in your hands. Explore a fantastical land filled with outlandish monsters and loot-filled dungeons, all while trying to stop the tyrannical Dragon Lord and his skeleton army.
Additionally, fans got a closer look at the unforgettable cast of characters joining you on this adventure, including headstrong captain Valentine and rule-obsessed robot Frette. New details about key characters are now available on the Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Game Guide, including:
The Dragon Lord is a powerful necromancer and Tiny Tina’s most enduring evil creation. He has tried for eons to conquer the Wonderlands and eradicate the stain of heroism from the world. A lesser villain would have given up by now, but the Dragon Lord has devious plans to shatter the cycle and destroy the forces that have opposed him once and for all;
Valentine would tell you he’s a dashing rogue with a penchant for danger and a flair for heroism. Others would describe him as “a washed-up low-rent space pirate.” He loves Bunkers & Badasses, eager to play the gallant savior and immerse himself in the story. He’s quick on his feet but tends not to think about long-term consequences;
Frette was an office accounting bot for decades before a chance encounter with Valentine resulted in her employer filing for Bankruptcy While Currently On Fire (legally distinct from normal Bankruptcy). Rather than be liquidated at auction, she hitched a ride off-planet with Valentine and has functioned as his navigator ever since. She tries to keep Valentine out of trouble as much as possible, but one can only do so much;
Torgue is the founder of the Torgue Combustible Pistols Company. The screaming maniac has left behind his riches and castles and taken on the life of a wandering musician. Torgue is only a half-bard, but what he lacks in talent, he also lacks in knowledge. His magic lute allows him to cast spells, but since he lacks control one never knows what he might end up casting.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will launch on March 25, 2022 across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, and PC via the Epic Games Store exclusively at launch, and on other PC digital storefronts later in 2022. Pre-orders are now available across all launch platforms.
