Tactical Card Battler Floppy Knights Deals Out Greatness on Game Pass Q2 2022

Soundtrack Composed by Grahm Nesbitt Available Now

PORTLAND, OR – March 16, 2022 – Floppy Knights, the turn-based strategy deck-builder featuring a young inventor and her robot-arm bestie, saves the day on Xbox and PC Game Pass in Q2 2022 as revealed today at the /twitchgaming and ID@Xbox Showcase. Developer Rose City Games will bring the title simultaneously to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S (via backwards compatibility), and Steam for PC and Mac.

Embark on an adventure as the brilliant programmer Phoebe and her clever, trusted robot-arm–and her own invention!–Carlton. Experiment with the mighty Floppy Knights, floppy disks turned into tangible projections of plants, monsters, and other collectible battle creatures, before entering the annual Gadget Cup to snag the winner’s cash prize. Help townsfolk in need, earn some quick cash, and get Phoebe’s parents off her case about finding “real” employment by taking on odd jobs around town.

Engage in turn-based tactical combat with a deck filled with Phoebe’s creations, such as Succulent Kickers, skateboarding ghosts, and the fearsome Big Mad. Master main objectives to advance to the next level while completing secondary missions to win BigCoins and craft new cards. Upgrade cards in-battle to empower them with stronger attacks and expand the deck by unlocking new cards at Phoebe’s workshop.

Become a local hero by saving crops from starving Goblin Grunts, rescuing an Ogre trapped at the base of an active volcano, and preventing the postponement of the Science Fair. Craft a deck strong enough to battle no-good Troublemakers, monstrous BeheMoths, and gooey slimes. Face Alex, Phoebe’s archenemy and major copycat, as she tries to shake her down at every turn with her own snarky robot companion Snarlton.

Build Plant, Monster, and Hooligan decks by unlocking new categories of cards. Plants like Commander Vera are friendly and helpful in restoring units’ health with sunbathing boosts. Mean monsters like Jessica and the Quiver Kid make for great offensive cards capable of awesome damage combos with extra attacks or stronger blows at the cost of self-inflicted damage. Meanwhile, sneaky hooligans always have a buff card up their sleeves. Teen Spirits may be cute, but with the right card, they can hit all surrounding enemies at once and knock them back a few spots.

Enjoy the whimsical, leisurely card-building fun directed by Marlowe Dobbe (Dicey Dungeons). Feel the heat of each clash with retro, upbeat tunes composed by Grahm Nesbitt (Garden Story, Goodbye Doggy), fueling the passion behind each calculated move.

“From the catchy tunes and quirky story to playful art style, everything in Floppy Knights was designed to create a special gaming experience,” said Marlowe Dobbe, Floppy Knights Creative Director. “There’s drama, comedy, action, and lots of fun. We can only hope people enjoy the gameplay as much as we enjoyed creating it!”

Floppy Knights debuts on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S (via backwards compatibility), Xbox and PC Game Pass, and Steam for Windows and Mac users in Q2 2022 for USD $19.99. It will support the English language. The game’s soundtrack is now available for purchase for USD $7.99 and streaming via Bandcamp.

About Sweet Bandits Studios

Sweet Bandits Studios is an indie studio based in Quebec, Canada. The studio was created in 2016 by game developers from AAA studios who were tired of the profit-first mentality and dishonest work ethics they had experienced. Their belief is that to create the best games possible openness and transparency are keys. Therefore, in their studio, everyone can partake in the decision-making. Sweet Bandits Studios have been the recipient of prices and grants notably the Catapulte Program, Canada Media Fund, and Quebec City grant.

Fun fact, they are one of the very few studios to have shipped a title, Coffence, an online multiplayer game, using Amazon Lumberyard (and the talent of only 5 persons).  Now 17 team members strong, they plan on leveraging what they’ve learned to create a solid user experience for Deceive Inc, a game focusing on subterfuge, deduction, and ingenuity set in the groovy world of international espionage.

About Tripwire Interactive

Formed in 2005 as a humble independent developer founded by gamers who found success in the video game modding community, Tripwire Interactive has developed and self-published multiple critically acclaimed titles in the wildly popular Killing Floor and Rising Storm franchises, which have collectively sold over 20 million units to date. The studio’s latest project, Maneater, breaks new ground in the popular action RPG genre and finds players taking on the role of a deadly shark with the uncanny ability to evolve as it feeds.

Since then, Tripwire Interactive has expanded its business with the publishing division, Tripwire Presents, turning its experience and resources to include publishing titles spanning multiple platforms and genres from other talented independent studios. Tripwire Presents aims to help like-minded independent studios bring their titles to market, including Chivalry 2 developed by Torn Banner Studios, Espire 1: VR Operative developed by Digital Lode, and Road Redemption developed by EQ Games and Pixel Dash Studios. Tripwire Presents continues to grow their portfolio, and are always on the lookout for the next great team and game.

Ed-0: Zombie Uprising Arrives in Early Access on April 4

D3PUBLISHER Revives the Edo Era filled with Zombie Annihilation in a New Japanese Rogue-like Action Title on PC via Steam

Oakland, CA – March 16, 2022 – D3PUBLISHER Inc., a leading Japanese games publisher, and developer Lancarse Ltd. are proud to reveal their newest title, Ed-0: Zombie Uprising. This survival rogue-like action title will arrive on PC on April 4, 2022 in Early Access, available for $19.99 / €19.99 /£19.99 and is currently “RP for Rating Pending” by the ESRB. Ed-0: Zombie Uprising will integrate community feedback to improve, optimize, and build a complete launch with frequent updates throughout the Early Access period.

Starting with the Early Access launch, players will be able to partake in the carnivorous combat and test their ability with different traditional Japanese characters, starting with the Samurai. With over 10 hours of core gameplay content at launch, Early Access is planned to last for six months—or more based on feedback—to provide additional content, polish, and balancing that will improve the experience for fans.

The Early Access launch will include:

  • Two playable characters, with a third coming later in Early Access.
  • 10+ hours of gameplay available right away.
  • Three main quests, five sub quests, and three main bosses.
  • 100+ of skills and items.
  • Everything is randomly generated for every run.
  • Adjustable high degree of difficulty.
  • Countless surprises and unpredictable adversaries.

Designed for brutal strategic battles in a rogue-like format, Ed-0: Zombie Uprising takes place in fictional Edo-era in Japan where hordes of hungry zombies have raided the isolated country. No dungeon run will be the same, so players’ judgment will be of the utmost importance, having to face “once-in-a-lifetime” challenges with a wide variety of random elements amid dangerous foes. Ed-0: Zombie Uprising includes various undead enemies, ranging from “newly interpreted” Japanese zombies to foreign invaders born after the “Zombie Industrial Revolution.” Players will unlock more as they play (and succeed) with an increasing number of options to customize builds to their liking—with the option to bump up the level of difficulty to test one’s capability.

Discover the Ages:

  • Zombie Industrial Revolution – This event induces zombie occupation in 90% of the world in the early 19th century.
  • Isolating the Country – The Edo Shogunate’s policy of seclusion completely cut off diplomatic relations with other countries. As a result, Japan was seen as one step behind civilization, but Japan succeeded in locking down against the threat of zombies.
  • Opening the Country – Japan was attacked by a foreign ship, arriving in Yokohama in 1853. The country had no choice but to end its 200+ years of seclusion.

Dawn of the Monsters Review

Dawn of the Monsters

Developer: 13AM Games
Publisher: WayForward
Platforms: Switch (Reviewed), Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC, Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $29.99 – Available Here

Overview

There are some niches that simply get left in the dust in the game industry. One of those niches involves almost anything to do with kaiju. Sure, we have had a few Godzilla and other monster titles come and go, but most are unoriginal and come in a rather bare-bones format. WayForward and 13AM Games are looking to satisfy that itch you didn’t know you had with Dawn of the Monsters. This brawler has the player take to the streets and control mechs as they control a set of their own giant beasts and bots, attempting to save the world and get some nice combat in the process. Does this title measure up, or is it yet another uninspired take? Let’s find out.

Story

Dawn of the Monsters makes a weird first impression. At first, it feels like a paint-by-numbers beat-em up, with a little “save the world” plot beginning to unfold as large kaiju begin to attack a city. As you progress, the quality of writing and excellent production value comes forth, making for an engaging experience all around. In this tale, players are thrust into a fighting force known as Defense Alliance Worldwide Network, who utilize their own version of the Nephilim (the kaiju species attacking) to defend the planet. With the help of a couple of mechs, the player travels to several locations doing battle, getting fed some hefty bits of lore and a story that feels like an engrossing animation throughout. You can tell a lot of effort and love was applied by a team that enjoy the product through the writing, as even though the game runs rather long- it never gets stale or boring due to the amount of narrative shoved into the package. It’s futuristic fun that never lets up, and possibly one of the most enjoyable tales to come in a brawler in a good bit.

Gameplay

The gameplay is, as advertised, a brawler with big beasts. While some Nephilim feel a bit large and slow, they make up for that with power and special abilities. Other large machines are more agile, offering a nice change of pace for the player during the adventure. Instead of random drops, the player can utilize actual buildings as their arsenal, which also host health and power boosts to give an edge while in combat. Light and strong attacks, as well as super move of sorts make up the general mechanics for play.

Again, it kind of sounds like what most brawlers offer at first glance. The two elements that add a lot of depth, however, are the game’s usage of defense, and the AI of the monsters themselves. While attacking and mashing your way through may seem like the way to go from the start, the player will quickly learn that many of these foes are smart and must be defended against properly – so you do not meet your demise in brutal fashion. A fluid parry system is your first line, as watching for openings to counter can unleash a parry attack, which can protect your own health while creating a once non-existent place to quickly make work of a monster.

Players also must do this while dealing with an onslaught of other monsters, so they must learn to adapt. To further assist, bonuses known as augments can be gained to adjust stats for each stage. These augments range from defensive to offensive boosts and can be combined to create powerful combos and techniques to give the player the edge against some stressful situations. Up to three of these unlocks can be used and stacking cards while practicing some trial and error on the field can add to a lot of variety that keeps things fresh for each large protagonist.

It’s this well-balanced system that works well and makes Dawn of the Monsters feel distinct in its genre. The only thing I can possibly say that may add some frustration is that there are portions of the game that can get overly challenging and feel tedious after a bit, even with the amount of variation added through augments and the otherwise diverse gameplay mechanics. This is due to the length of the game. I enjoy seeing a long beat-em up, but there is a reason why most wrap within an hour or two, rather than in eight. There are only so many things such as narrative and combat variations that can give a player a sense of satisfaction during every level. After a while, it kind of felt like those little moments of accomplishment were asked to be repeated a few times too many as waves continued with that once “new hat” I just earned starting to feel a bit stale and beaten. The overall product is great – don’t get me wrong, but I do see some tackling the overall product in bursts rather than one long session due to the monotony.

Visuals

Visually, the art style is outstanding within Dawn of the Monsters. These 2D sprites look sharp and fluid, featuring heavy amounts of detail on every character and monster in the game. Animations are also sharp and never miss, despite having a screen full of chaos. Some of the environments could use a bit of change from time to time as after a while you almost feel eager to move on, but it still is easy to look around and get lost in the amount of depth and atmosphere found within every area you trek through.

Audio

The soundtrack is also stellar, but that is also matched by the voice actors as they add a lot of strength to an already top-tier tale that is a lot of fun to watch unfold. Monsters also add a lot to the sound with their roars and treachery as they plow through landscapes, all balancing together as the tunes in the background blare on.

Overall

Dawn of the Monsters is a special experience that comes around once in a generation. While there are some moments of tedium, it’s hard not to appreciate the level of work 13AM Games applied to the overall product, as there is a good time waiting here for anyone – kaiju fanatic or not. Is it the best kaiju game ever? Well, it certainly is up there, but that will be time to decide in the future. What Dawn of the Monsters can be looked at now is a title that was able to succeed most in making a niche subject accessible and thoroughly enjoyable, which will surely set bars for all titles alike that are to follow. Kaiju fans rejoice, your new fix is here.

SHARING IN THE SUCCESS: KOWLOON NIGHTS AND DEVELOPERS SURPASS $150MM IN REVENUE; SIGNS EIGHT NEW TITLES

[16 March 2022] – Today, Kowloon Nights announced a new milestone, having generated $150MM in revenue across their portfolio to date. The funding source also announced the addition of eight new titles to the roster from the likes of Aggro Crab, Kitfox Games and League of Geeks. The fund’s success highlights the foundational values of Kowloon Nights – fair terms, a developer-first approach, and focus on supporting studios in their self-publishing efforts.

Kowloon’s vision was to fundamentally change the way games are funded,” said Alexis Garavaryan, CEO of Kowloon Nights. “This milestone demonstrates the validity and sustainability of a model that offers fair terms to developers while also putting the creators first and ensuring that players remember the names of the incredibly talented developers behind the games.”

On top of a strong portfolio of released content, the slate of titles through Kowloon Nights continues to grow with the addition of eight new projects, all unique in voice, vision and scope. These talented creators are developing experiences that cover a wide variety of genres and play styles, from the first-person factory automation found in Techtonica (Fire Hose Games), to the music-action RPG stylings of Sword of Symphony (Stephen Ddungu).

Kowloon Nights has been an ideal partner for us. They’re easy to work with, offer developer-friendly terms, and we retain all creative control + IP ownership. If you’re an indie developer with ambitious plans, you’d have a tough time finding a better funding partner than Kowloon.” – Eitan Glinert, Fire Hose Games

Ever since my game’s early social media success, I’ve received a lot of good offers, but Kowloon Nights was the only one to present all the benefits of staying independent, but with the backing and support to allow me to continue working on the game full-time. It’s game-dev heaven.” – Stephen Ddungu, Sword of Symphony

The most recent additions to the Kowloon Nights roster include the following showcase studios and projects (in their own words):

Aggro Crab:  Aggro Crab is an unprofessional game studio and menace to the industry. Based in Seattle, WA, we make punchy stylized action games with a satirical twist. We previously released Going Under and are currently working on our secret second project!

Chasing Rats Games:  Chasing Rats Games is an indie studio based in Montreal developing games that stand out due to their audacious art-style, distinct gameplay and original multiplayer elements. We have recently launched Struggling and are currently hard at work on Worship, a cultist-themed take on the roguelike genre inspired by Pikmin!

Fire Hose Games:  Founded in 2008 in Boston, Fire Hose Games brings beauty and depth to the genres we love. Our current project is Techtonica, a factory building and automation game set in the bioluminescent, cavernous depths of an alien planet.

Kitfox Games:  Kitfox Games is a small indie studio in Montreal, Canada, who has released seven titles on Steam and consoles, sometimes as developer and sometimes as publisher. They’re probably best known right now as the developers of Boyfriend Dungeon and future publishers of the upcoming graphical version of Dwarf Fortress. Their work with Kowloon is on an unannounced title. All we can tell you is that it has simulation elements!

League of Geeks:  League of Geeks (you can call us LoG) is a ‘Triple-i’ videogame development studio and publisher in Melbourne, Australia. Most well-known for our seminal digital board-game, Armello, we’re now working on not one, but two new IP with our pals at Kowloon Nights.

Stephen Ddungu:  I’m a self-taught game-dev, musician and animator based in the UK. I’m currently solo-developing Sword Of Symphony; a musical action RPG where players fight with the power of music.

Webble Games:  Webble Games is an indie game studio based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. We are happily working on our passion project right now and cannot wait to share it with the world!

To further aid partners in their goals to self-publish, Kowloon Nights announced a suite of available support tools and services from Kepler Interactive, including: press distribution, influencer outreach, business development, and more. This partnership further expands the empowerment and control given to independent studios looking for a world-class and developer-centric alternative to the traditional publishing models that exist.
“It’s been a blast working with Kowloon Nights on bringing Sifu to life. Not only were they supportive of the vision from the beginning, but the team was hugely helpful throughout production, supporting the decision to delay the release, helping us a lot with Chinese cultural topics, and more. The way they fight for their developers and projects, they should be called Kowloon Knights!” – Pierre de Margerie, Sloclap

About Kowloon Nights
Founded in 2017, Kowloon Nights is a source of production funding that allows developers to chart a path towards complete independence. Kowloon Nights gives independent developers the ability to focus on making games while still holding on to power and influence. The team continues to seek more titles to add to its portfolio; for more information, please visit https://www.kowloonnights.com/
