New Trailer for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Reveals First Gameplay at NACON Connect

New gameplay footage for Daedalic Entertainment’s story-driven adventure shows Gollum using all of his cunning to sneak past enemies and traverse the vertical environments on his journey to reclaim his ‘precious’

Hamburg, Germany, July 7th, 2022 – Daedalic Entertainment and NACON are excited to reveal the first gameplay footage of their story-driven adventure The Lord of the Rings: Gollum – Daedalic’s take on one of the most iconic characters in fantasy history arrives on PC, PlayStation®4, PlayStation®5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S on September 1st. The Nintendo Switch version is planned for later this year.

Gollum is perhaps the most maligned and misunderstood creature in all of Middle-earth, cursed with dueling personalities and a constant compulsion to find his Preciousss. The Lords of the Rings: Gollum takes players on an exceptional journey, sharing a perspective unique to Gollum. Whether creeping through tall grass or swimming in rivers, Gollum must adapt and move in the shadows if he is to evade enemies during his adventure. From the mountains of Mordor, to the Mines of Moria, and passing through Mirkwood Forest, players will explore a variety of diverse environments and experience an enthralling narrative adventure. Beginning  September 1st, explore this original story created by Daedalic Entertainment and officially licensed by Middle-earth Enterprises.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is based on the legendary The Lord of the Rings trilogy of books by J.R.R. Tolkien, and tells of Gollum’s experiences from behind-the-scenes in the first chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring. After losing his precious ring to Bilbo Baggins, Gollum decides to leave the Misty Mountains and embark on a perilous journey across Middle-earth, where he encounters well-known characters from the books as well as new potential allies and antagonists. It’s up to the players if they want Gollum to have the upper hand when making important decisions, or allow his Hobbit-self, Sméagol, to take over. To survive the dangers he encounters during his adventures, Gollum must use all of his cunning to distract and sneak past enemies while climbing and platforming across the vertically-designed environments.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is developed by Daedalic Entertainment in partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises and co-published by Daedalic Entertainment and NACON. The game will release on PC, PlayStation®4, PlayStation®5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. A physical edition for consoles will also be available.

Final Vendetta Review

Final Vendetta

Developer: Bitmap Bureau
Publisher: Numskull Games
Platforms: PC (Reviewed), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch
Release Date: 17 June 2022
Price: $24.99 USD / $35.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

Last month we saw the release of not one but two new beat ’em up games fresh from the oven and available on all current platforms. If you’re a fan of action games or have been following gaming news, the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game probably popped up in your mind but what about this second “mystery” game? It’s Final Vendeettaa! – sorry about that – It launched only two days after Ninja Turtles and without much fanfare. Final Vendetta is a brawler with the premise of being as mechanically simple as possible that anyone can pick up and start enjoying instantly. Final Vendetta is also a passionate labor of love that pays homage to its much older predecessors.

Story

A notorious gang known only as “Syndic8” is on the uprise in the London underworld. Business was all well and good until they committed a grave mistake: they decided to kidnap Claire Sparks’ sister. Syndic8 demands that Claire and her hot-headed friends run a job for them. Now, Claire and especially her friends don’t take too well to receiving orders from criminals, so they decide to put an end to Syndic8 instead. Who can save Syndic8 from these blood-thirsty freaks?

Nonsense aside, I like the callback to Final Fight’s intro. It’s brief and simple but kinda nostalgic at the same time. As for the rest of the plot, there’s none, and that’s a good thing.

Gameplay

The main blueprint for Final Vendetta’s gameplay comes from the older Streets of Rage games. Final Vendetta mixes and matches elements from all three SoR games, but it also has a bit of DNA from a variety of other beat ’em ups. For example you can kick fallen foes similarly to Konami’s Vendetta, juggle your enemies to death which is implemented similarly to how it works on Sengoku 3, among other little touches that vary depending on your character of choice.

The playable cast is composed of your typical martial artist superheroes of old. Claire Sparks is the nimble and technical fighter. “Duke” Sancho is the well-rounded street brawler. Miller Williams is the resident “slow” big guy with a focus on wrestling moves. Their play styles vary considerably. Regardless of who you choose, all three of them are fun to use.

Final Vendetta uses a four button layout like in old Neo Geo games. These buttons comprise your basic punch, a jump, a block button and a special button. The first three buttons are self-explanatory with the outlier here being the special button; it’s used in more situational moments like when grabbing a foe or when your character is running. There are also moves accessed by pressing a combination of two buttons, such as a launcher and a super move that hits in all directions. I’ll leave the rest for you to try for yourself, or you can simply watch the video above to have a good idea of your options in Final Vendetta.

There are five stages in total. All of them are relatively short. The enemies lack variety and are mostly palette swaps with a few different moves. Final Vendetta’s main draws for me are its tight controls and overall fast pace. It’s like actually going to the arcades, you insert a coin in your machine of choice and press start. No cutscene between phases. No unnecessary BS. Just gaming in its purest form.

Four difficulty types are available in the game; casual is a walk in the park, while ultra will test your knowledge of the game, since there are only two lives and no prompts to warn you of incoming stage hazards. There are also extra modes that help prolong the game’s longevity such as boss rush and survival. These bonus modes are unlocked by beating the game on hard with certain characters and are very fun and challenging.

If the gameplay sounds too derivative, it’s because it is. Final Vendetta is supposed to be a very light-hearted “culmination” of classic beat ‘em ups up to this point in time. Despite that, Final Vendetta is never boring. The varied difficult modes, characters and extra modes will keep you occupied for hours. Mastering a given character on its own is already fun enough; it’s not hard to do since there are no difficult inputs or super short windows to link attacks in a combo.

At the time of this publishing, a new patch was released. That means that along with overall fixes, the game received a lot of tweaks. The combo system was slightly revamped, and some exploits were removed. As a result, the game feels even better. It’s a real pity that the developers weren’t able to launch the game like this from the start.

Visuals

Final Vendetta looks like a Neo Geo beat ‘em up from the nineties. It’s especially similar to Sengoku 3, only less detailed. The stages look overly simple, but the character’s sprites are well rendered and animated.

Audio

The soundtrack in this game is amazing. It features some known people from the hip hop and electronic music scene, such as Featurecast, Krafty Kuts and Utah Saints. The music is upbeat, dancey and adds a lot to the old school vibe of the game. The sound effects sound appropriate for the most part. Although I don’t understand how a punch can sound more impactful than a lead pipe to the head.

Overall

I really liked my time with this game. It doesn’t have the Ninja Turtles budget and appeal, but it’s equally as fun. While some may find that Bitmap Bureau went too far with Final Vendetta’s old school sensibilities, I welcome more games like it with open arms.

Cursed to Golf Tees Off On August 18th For PlayStation, Xbox, Switch And PC

Anticipated ‘Golf-Like’ introduces dungeon-like courses, otherworldly ACE CARDS, brilliant bosses
and a roguelite loop to the sport

Golfenburg, Sweden – July 7th, 2022 – Thunderful and Chuhai Labs are thrilled to announce that their heavily anticipated ‘Golf-Like’, Cursed to Golf, will be teeing off on August 18th. In addition to the previously announced PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch versions, Cursed to Golf will also arrive on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on the same day. Featuring on multiple “most anticipated lists” for 2022, including for the likes of Eurogamer and Polygon, Cursed to Golf is a genre-twisting 2D roguelite golfer that features outlandish special abilities, diverse biomes, challenging bosses and a soundtrack that slaps harder than any heard in a golf game before.

In Cursed to Golf, you play as a would-be golf champion who tragically dies just as he’s about to win a tournament. Instead of making it to heaven (or hell), you find yourself in Golf Purgatory. If you can golf your way through the ever-changing 18 hole course spread across four biomes (Purgatory, The Oasis, The Caverns and Hell), you’ll be able to ascend back to life. Prepare for dungeon-like holes, often with multiple paths to the flag, littered with Grave Grabbers, deadly spikes, explosive TNT boxes and all manner of other traps and hazards.

Fear not, cursed golfer. For all the hazards that stand in your path, consider Chuhai Labs your friendly caddy, handing you a host of helpful tools to give you a chance of overcoming them. Shot Idols are a blessing from the golf god, awarding you extra shots for smashing through them, teleporters will take you closer to the flag, even TNT boxes can sometimes hide shortcuts, should you detonate them  properly! On top of that, ACE CARDS offer you awesome single-use abilities that you could never use in real life. Rewind time with a Mulligan, freeze water with the Ice Ball, guide your ball to its target with the Rocket Ball, get out of sticky situations with a Portal and blast your ball into three with the Scattershot. These are just a few of the over 20 power ups you’ll have access to.

In between holes, you’ll be able to drive around the map in your Golf Cart. You might discover some treasure chests, card packs, or come across a totally-not-shady-at-all guy who will meet you at forks in the road and help you choose a path to take. It’s always a good idea to stop by the Eterni-Tee shop to buy card booster packs, switch up your outfit, or store a few special cards in your binder so they can survive in between runs.

“We can’t wait for players to hit our dungeon-like course on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC this August 18th,” said Chuhai Labs’ Game Director Liam Edwards. “The reception to Cursed to Golf from players and media alike has been phenomenal so far and I’m really excited to see them unleashed onto our online leaderboards, good luck beating my scores!”

“If you like golf and you like being cursed, then boy do we have the game for you,” said Mark Lentz, Producer at Chuhai Labs. “In fact, if neither of those two things are up your alley, then Cursed to Golf will still blow your mind. Believe it!”

Sea of Stars, the Highly Anticipated Turn-based RPG from Sabotage Studio, Primed for PlayStation Consoles in 2023

Lauded team behind 2018’s The Messenger confirms that its sophomore title will hit PlayStation 4/PlayStation 5 when it launches in 2023

QUEBEC CITY  (July 7, 2022)  Hot on the heels of the Summer Solstice and freshly announced during PlayStation’s event spotlighting new indies, developer Sabotage Studio revealed that its turn-based RPG Sea of Stars will also come to PlayStation consoles when it launches next year.

Sea of Stars tells the story of two Children of the Solstice, uniting players with Valere and Zale, youths fated to become Solstice Warriors. Combining their Sun and Moon powers to perform Eclipse Magic, they are pledged to fight the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.  Set to a stunning soundtrack with original works by legendary composer Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger) who joins Sabotage Studio’s composer Eric W. Brown, Sea of Stars is poised to be one of 2023’s most anticipated games.

Today’s trailer, revealed during PlayStation’s event, showcased updated footage of the early chapters of the game. Sabotage Studio confirmed that development on Sea of Stars’ PlayStation version has been in production for many months at this point, with all footage from today’s announcement coming from PlayStation consoles. Taking inspiration from classics such as Chrono Trigger and utilizing stunning pixel art visuals, Sea of Stars promises to be well worth the wait until its launch next year.

Key Features

  • Engaging Turn-based Combat: Pressing the action button in sync with the animations increases damage output while reducing incoming damage. Along with timed hits, combat features combo attacks, boosting, and a strategic “locks” system offering options to play with different damage types in order to hinder enemies while they are channeling powerful attacks or spells, all in an immersive take on the genre; no random encounters, no transitions to separate battlefields, and no grinding.
  • Unshackled Traversal: Swim, climb, vault, jump off or hoist up ledges as you traverse seamlessly through the world with a navigation system based on platformer expertise that breaks free from the classic bound-to-the-grid tileset movement.
  • A Story Rich Adventure: Dozens of original characters and story arcs will take you on a captivating journey. Sometimes epic, sometimes silly, and other times emotional, Sea of Stars does its RPG duty of exploring classic themes of adventure and friendship, while also being chock-full of the unexpected twists and events you’d expect from a Sabotage Studio production.
  • All Fun, No Tedium: Enjoy combat without fear of hitting a wall and having to grind for experience or items; in Sea of Stars, defeat requires a change in battle plans, not hours of repetition to better the odds in a rematch.
  • A World You Can Touch: There are many ways to hang out in the world of Sea of Stars if you feel inclined to change the pace during your adventures. Sailing, cooking, fishing, stopping by a tavern to listen to a song or play the infamous tabletop game known as “Wheels” … every system has been designed to deliver an experience that pays respect to retro classics, while rethinking in some areas to offer a smooth and modernized experience.
  • Radiant Lighting: Dynamic light effects pairs with a world-influencing day/night cycle to make every area feel truly alive, pushing the traditional visual limits of classically-styled 2D pixel-art games; the only way to properly tell the story of heroes conjuring the powers of the Sun and the Moon.
