LUCID Chain-Jumps and Crystal-Dashes onto PC, Consoles in 2024

Fast, Fluid “Celestoidvania” Joins Apogee Publishing Family

NEW YORK — Sept. 6, 2022 —LUCID, the crystal-hopping adventure platformer by Eric Manahan of The Matte Black Studio, jumps, pulses, and slashes its way onto Steam for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2024.

Published by Apogee Entertainment (Turbo OverkillDuke NukemPreyMax Payne), LUCID presents aheartfelt adventure in a crystalline fantasy. Venture across a massive overworld, solve challenging puzzle dungeons, and conquer white-knuckle combat to unlock powerful new abilities, revealing more secrets in previously explored areas. Tightly tuned for platforming perfection, LUCID embraces the flow-state fun of genre giants like Celeste while writing a love letter to the 2D golden age of Mega Man X, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid.

Explore Aedyn, an enigmatic land replete with crystals, in the wake of the apocalyptic Great Fall. The Lucid Giant has fallen and only the few remaining Sentinels, practitioners of the Crystal Arts, can stop the corruption soaking the land. Take up the fight as Oenn, a young, stone-skinned Junior Sentinel. Seek the shattered pieces of the Lucid Giant and confront the ancient, celestial entity which threatens Aedyn.

Expand Oenn’s mobility and enhance his combat arsenal with the five Crystal Arts—rewards for braving memorable dungeons like the icy climb of Onyx Ridge or the toxic gloom of Welltown. While Oenn can jump, dash, and pulse on his own, chain the Crystal Arts together to traverse impossible gap distances and unlock devastating combo attacks. Soften enemy armor from afar with the ranged Crystal Pulse before crushing their defenses with an overhead Crystal Axe slam. Fire the Crystal Spear to break open a pathway above or use its “down air” as a pogo to extend Oenn’s jump.

By equipping up to two Crystal Arts at once and fluidly swapping them mid-combo, lay bare the secrets of Aedyn. Solve devious puzzles in the deepest depths, defeat formidable bosses, and explore the overworld, aiding villagers and piecing together Aedyn’s history. Every item on Oenn’s journey possesses a world-building lore description, and translating runic language or defeating enough of one enemy will unfold a bigger narrative tapestry.

“With LUCID, I’m devoted to letting players tell as much of the story as they like, in precisely their own way,” said Eric Manahan, founder of The Matte Black Studio. “From the narrative threads you choose to tug on, to the Crystal Arts and movement tech you embrace the most, LUCID aims to let you write your own legend in a shattered world of platforming bliss.”

“Apogee got its start with some pretty famous platform games in the early ‘90s, like Commander Keen, Duke NukemCosmo’s Cosmic CanyonBio Menace, and Monster Bash,” said Scott Miller, Apogee’s original founder. “It makes total sense for us to get back into platformers and with LUCID, we finally found one that’s innovative, deep with story, and has a super fun lead character with a ton of tricks up his jacket sleeve.”

LUCID will debut in 2024 on all platforms of note. To take your first steps in Aedyn, follow @_theMatteBlack and @Apogee_Ent on Twitter, hang out with Eric on Instagram, subscribe to the Apogee Entertainment and Matte Black Studio Discord servers, and wishlist LUCID on Steam.

New Tales From The Borderlands – First Look at Extended Gameplay

Longform gameplay video and new character trailer gives fans a deeper look at the bombastic cinematic adventure led by a lovable cast of underdogs

During the Gearbox Showcase at PAX West, 2K and Gearbox Software unveiled a first look at extended gameplay for New Tales from the Borderlands, a standalone, choice-based interactive narrative adventure set in the Borderlands universe. An exciting character trailer also accompanied the unveil, providing a deeper look at the three loveable losers that players will control throughout their adventures.

New Tales from the Borderlands is developed by Gearbox Software, who partnered with key alumni of the original Telltale Games narrative team to craft the all-new story. This spiritual successor carries forward the same bold sense of adventure and storytelling with a standalone narrative full of heartwarming emotion, a new cast, and classic Borderlands humour.

Extended Look at Gameplay

In the newly revealed gameplay footage, fans get their first taste of the deep, raucous cinematic adventure where the ruthless corporations of the Borderlands, powerful universe-changing Vault technology, and three ordinary citizens collide. Highlights include:

  • Every Choice Matters. Every choice you make can impact how your story unfolds, often in unexpected ways. Only by playing through the game will you fully understand how your decisions can change the Borderlands;
  • Impact of Quick Time Events. Succeeding at or failing QTEs has a tangible impact on your adventure, sometimes leading to a premature conclusion and other times shaping your story in unexpected ways;
  • Immersive Visuals. In addition to stunning environments, New Tales from the Borderlands utilizes vastly improved movement and facial animations, using performance capture and facial mapping technology for the first time ever in a Borderlands title.

Three Lovable Losers

For those looking to learn more about the protagonists of New Tales from the Borderlands, look no further than the new character trailer, featuring the altruistic scientist Anu, her ambitious, “streetwise” brother Octavio, and the fierce, frogurt-slinging Fran.

  • Anuradha Dahr: Although Anuradha (Anu) might be uncomfortable in social settings, she has no problem solving problems! Anu can see complex calculus, probabilities, and solve puzzles with her Tech Glasses. This do-gooder dreams of a world where no one has to kill to get ahead;
  • Octavio Wallace Dahr: Anu’s adopted brother, Octavio, can be a bit full of himself. According to him, he is Meridian City’s most popular citizen with a long list of contacts to back it up. His ability to access information is like no other! Octavio’s big break hasn’t come just yet but he desperately wants to own a business and make loads of cash;
  • Fran Miscowicz: Fran brings all the action from her gadget packed hover chair. Fran’s frogurt shop was hit by a Maliwan laser, and now is out for vengeance on the people that destroyed her shop. She’ll stop at nothing to protect her friends along the way and hopefully receive the much owed insurance payout, or the insurance company is going to have to deal with her directly.

Every choice players make, big or small, will determine the fate of each character in unexpected ways. Whether it’s Anu’s vision of a universe that markets more than weapons, Octavio’s dreams of fame and fortune, or Fran’s frosty plot for revenge, their success or failure depends on decisions made throughout gameplay. Only by playing will players fully understand how their decisions can change the Borderlands.

New Tales from the Borderlands will be available worldwide on October 21, 2022, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Pre-order now to get the Adventure Capital Pack, featuring cosmetics for Anu, Octavio, and Fran, 10,000 in-game currency and an in-game FL4K Vaultlander collectible!*

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection

Developer: Digital Eclipse
Publisher: Konami
Platforms: Switch, Xbox One, Playstation 4 (Reviewed), PC, Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $39.99 – Available Here

Overview

It has been a bit since Konami dived into their vault to release a hidden treasure – and they’re certainly making up for lost time. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection puts thirteen games in one collection, celebrating almost every title released during the 8 and 16-bit eras. With a lot of fan service and all the pizza you can eat, is this collection worth a shell? Let’s find out.

Story

There are thirteen games within this collection, so that means thirteen different narratives in total. Instead of listing the details of each, it’s much better to state that most consist of you either rescuing your pals or April from evil, with the usual pack of baddies playing their roles as antagonists. The games within the pack make up their own story, providing a history lesson of a franchise fighting to remain relevant as it traversed a decade where arcade titles were making the transition to consoles. The games also offer more dialogue and story as they progress over time, which was due to the upgrades in hardware and technology that evolved so quickly during the period.

All games included are as follows:

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (Arcade)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game (NES)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project (NES)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (NES)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (Super Nintendo)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (Super Nintendo)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist (Sega Genesis)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (Sega Genesis)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of The Foot Clan (Game Boy)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Il: Back From The Sewers (Game Boy)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Radical Rescue (Game Boy)

Gameplay

This is what matters, as even with 13 games, a bunch of duds could spoil the whole collection. I think it’s better to speak about what works versus what doesn’t for this review – as a few of these titles show their age in more ways than one. The original TMNT for the arcade is fantastic, and while the NES version doesn’t quite come with the same speed or quality, it does offer a couple of extra stages, as well as slight variance with bosses within. That is something that occurred a lot during this time, as arcade titles would transition to a platform in a weakened state – but deliver a few extra goods to make up for the shortcomings. At the time, that was ok, and it still is now, even if the arcade selection may have the greater replay value with friends overall.

In fairness, most of these titles are clones of other games that were original IPs. Nearly all of the titles here take notes from Double Dragon and other popular beat-em-up games from the era. Tournament Fighters, despite differences from the superior SNES version is a little bit leaning into the success of Street Fighter II, while the Game Boy titles were merely limited versions of all the lot. Sure, the Game Boy titles are fine and Radical Rescue is a nice change of pace due to its exploration bits (as it plays closer to something like Castlevania), but I personally found the handheld games to be a neat novelty or bonus, but nothing that really kept me glued in for too long due to their simplistic nature. Sure, I am elated for the inclusion, but I think most will be spending a good amount of time with Turtles in Time, Tournament Fighters, and Hyperstone Heist – which added a lot of speed and great quality of life improvements to the overall formula.

This was a time where licensed IPs got away with copying, and that is perfectly ok here as it makes these titles better games because of it. There is still so much originality even with the similar stages and styling that most will not mind what feels like a theme dropped onto what was an already classic and fluid experience. The extras are simply phenomenal here. Each game has its own instruction manual with full color images and details for movesets and so on that most will appreciate. There is also a vault dubbed the “Turtle’s Lair”, which has comics, boxart, and so much else included that it can take a good time to sort through it all for hardcore fans of the franchise. As far as online play goes- well, that really is the only miss. With only four titles featuring compatibility, none felt very smooth during my attempts with input latency and frequent disconnects during my several sessions. That said, this is without a doubt the best non-Sega/Capcom compilation to date, a treasure trove for Turtles’ fans.

Visuals

I could write about variances between the console and arcade titles in this pack as there is a lot to speak about from a graphics standpoint that is yet another history lesson. That said, this is a review of the collection and not a Wikipedia article, so most of the focus really needs to be on how well they are optimized for current platforms. Not one title looks bad or grainy (by default), with each retaining their original speeds with silky smooth emulation. The filters are a nice touch as well, even if some feel more like an add-on that is trying to mimic the effects of past televisions and cabinets, rather than truly emulate it. I think Capcom have gotten better with this over time, and Konami and Digital Eclipse still did a great job capturing the original look, but still could take a lesson or two in mastering how to implement these filters into a crisper presentation.

Audio

Licensed or not, most of these soundtracks are legendary for a reason. Each title retains the quality of the original audio, sounding great as you dive back into every adventure. The sound effects are also great, and the game of course has a jukebox of sorts for players to mess around with, as well as a bevy of other audio options. That main theme is awesome as it is, and the remixed offerings from menus are equally endearing to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Overall

From top to bottom, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection may be the most lovingly created compilation to date. Despite a few odd quirks here are there and the actual quality of every title involved in this set, there is no doubt that this was made by fans, for fans. Sure, the turtles may not be as relevant on a mainstream level as they once were, but this game captures that era, allowing players to relive the good times and escape back to it. If you are looking for Turtle Power for a great price, look no further as outside of actual pizza, everything else can be found within this terrific collection.

PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC Review

PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC

Developer: NOW PRODUCTION
Publisher: Bandai Namco
Platforms: Xbox Series X Xbox OnePlayStation 4PlayStation 5Nintendo SwitchPC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 26 Aug 2022
Price: $29.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

A cynical gamer would say that the number of releases, remakes, and remasters would mean that most of the gaming industry is creatively bankrupt nowadays. And while there is some slight truth in that there is another angle to it that is barely mentioned. I get to relive my childhood again! Seriously, it feels great seeing a game I played 15-20 years ago finding its way to modern systems again. PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC is one of those games. A remake of Pac-Man World from 1999 with updated UI, improved visuals, and fine-tuned platforming.

Story

PAC-MAN arrives home on his birthday to find the Ghosts have kidnapped PAC-MAN’s family & friends and ruined his party. Saving all members of your family isn’t mandatory (if you’re heartless) but it has a significant impact on the game ending. There is also a big baddie known as Toc-Man shielded behind an army of bosses that you will have to take down to get to him. But the road to him will be anything but easy (and short). A myriad of mazes, collectibles, and ghosts will make sure that you fail on your path as much as possible.

Gameplay

As I played through PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC, it reminded me of another game and its series from my early years – the Crash Bandicoot trilogy. It actually has a lot in common with PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC. They both have a main hub where you can pick the order of levels that you want to play. After every couple of levels, there is also a boss fight that serves as a gatekeep to other areas and hubs.

Compared to the original, this game comes with a huge list of changes and improvements. Pac-Man now has a hover jump ability that lets him briefly hover in the air, making it easier to jump over large gaps. Eating a power pellet transforms Pac-Man into Mega Pac-Man, which turns him into a giant version of himself. While in this form, in addition to being able to eat ghosts, Pac-Man can destroy stage objects, and temporary platforms appear to help Mega Pac-Man cross large gaps. I also have to mention better swimming controls and the inclusion of easy mode. It adds more platforms known as “easy blocks” to specific areas, making it easier to progress; as well as Pac-Man’s hover jump ability being extended. The easy mode can be toggled through the pause menu.

Visuals

In these kinds of remakes, the addition of stuff like widescreen support, 4K resolution, and polished visuals are a given. However, whatever visual progress you see in PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC is nothing to write home about. The best description of visual improvements is like going from a PS2 game to a PS3 one. Sure, the progress is there but it will hardly make you stop in your tracks as you play the game. I did notice a good number of enemies being repeated in later stages as well as the assets. Seriously, why can you find plenty of wooden boxes from pirate levels in later levels where they clearly don’t fit in?

Audio

Comparing this section with the original game, it is evident that some differences are there. How noticeable they are is entirely dependent on whether you have played the Pac-Man World at all. In any case, some sound effects are changed while the soundtrack is pretty much the same. Same and just as good, that is. All of the soundtracks are usually thematic depending on what hub or the world you’re playing in, although it might get a bit repetitive later on. Especially if you are as bad at platforming as I am so you get to repeat some sections over and over again (and thus listening to the same tune).

Overall

While PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC is a barebone remake and it hardly brings anything new to the table in terms of gameplay, it makes up for it in other areas of the game. Platforming is precise and the whole game has a finely tuned difficulty curved that’s accessible to everyone, all while being moderately challenging at later stages without seeming unfair.

The visual aspect of the game (especially if we take it in the context of a remake) leaves a lot to be desired, but all of that takes a back seat once you take the game for a spin. The core gameplay of PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC is something that hardly ever needs changing since it is all about fun and engagement. This might be one of the most accessible PAC-MAN games on PC and it is a perfect entry to anyone willing to dig deeper into this franchise.

Koumajou Remilia Scarlet Symphony Full Playthrough

0

Komajou Remilia was originally released in 2009 as one of the many fan games in the Touhou universe. This time, instead of a bullet hell game, we got a “Touhouvania” or a parody of the Castlevania games. Despite the many inspirations from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Komajou Remilia mixes the classic Castlevania formula with Touhou’s shooting game mechanics. As such, it is not a metroidvania. Komajou Remilia’s snappy controls, fast pace, nice Castlevania-ish music, and colorful cast makes for a fun and light-hearted experience in spite of all the bullets that are thrown at you.

Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony is an action side-scroller based on the world-famous 「Touhou Project」. The legendary 2009 title comes back with modern upgrades including HD remastered graphics and a number of bonus content, ready to give fans more convenient and pleasant gameplay experience.

Koumajou Remilia Scarlet Symphony
Developer: Frontier Aja, CFK Co., Ltd.
Publisher: CFK Co., Ltd.
Website: https://www.cfk.kr/
Platform: Windows
Release Date: 28 Jul, 2022
Price: $29.99 USD

Available now on Steam – https://store.steampowered.com/app/1229880/Koumajou_Remilia_Scarlet_Symphony/

Summary:

Recommended – Komajou Remilia is a blast to play from beginning to end. Its fresh take on the Classicvania formula should be explored more. It is short and a bit too simplistic, but still fun and charming.

Back 4 Blood Children of the Worm DLC Launch Trailer Shows Off New Story Campaign, Playable Cleaner, and Enemy Threat; Available Now

Warner Bros. Games and Turtle Rock Studios unveiled the launch trailer for Back 4 Blood – Expansion 2: Children of the Worm, the next major downloadable content (DLC) for the first-person co-op zombie shooter. The video showcases brand-new story campaign elements that put players into an epic showdown with a new adversary known as The Cultists, a deranged group of humans who fight for the rise of the Ridden. To help against this fierce enemy threat, the expansion introduces a new playable Cleaner, “Prophet” Dan – a gun toting, self-proclaimed preacher of the end times with reviving abilities to give teams a much-needed fighting chance. The new DLC also includes eight exclusive character skins and 12 exclusive weapon skins, along with new weapons, accessories, and cards. Children of the Worm is available now as part of the Back 4 Blood Annual Pass, Back 4 Blood: Deluxe Edition, Back 4 Blood: Ultimate Edition, or via standalone purchase.

Back 4 Blood – Expansion 2: Children of the Worm Launch Trailer

Children of the Worm follows the previously released Back 4 Blood – Expansion 1: Tunnels of Terror, which is available now.

Back 4 Blood is a first-person co-op zombie shooter from critically acclaimed developer, Turtle Rock Studios, available now for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles, and PC. The Back 4 Blood story takes place after a catastrophic outbreak where most of humanity has either been killed or infected by the parasitic Devil Worm. Hardened by unspeakable events and emboldened to fight for the last of humanity, a group of apocalypse veterans called the Cleaners have rallied to take on the infected horrors known as the Ridden and reclaim the world.
