Cursed to Golf Review

Cursed to Golf

Developer: Chuhai Labs
Publisher: Thunderful Games
Platforms: Switch (Reviewed), Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC, Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $19.99 – Available Here

Overview

There is nothing I appreciate more from this industry than an original idea. Cursed to Golf merges the sport of golf with a 2D rogue-like to create something truly unique for platforms. With an original story and a lot of charm, does this little title hold its own or does it prove some things are better left apart? Let’s find out.

Story

Cursed to Golf’s narrative plays out exactly like you would expect. After being struck by lightning right before a big game, our protagonist gets stuck in a place called Golf Purgatory and must golf their way out of a dark, whimsical world in order to regain his life. Yeah, it’s a bit of a dark story, but one told tongue-in-cheek to remain as chipper as its lovely art style. You’re joined by the ghost of a caddie and must golf like your life depended on it in a clever tale of revival. As joyous as it sounds on paper, I do feel that the story could have been a bit more satisfying as due to the rogue-like twists, it doesn’t evolve very much until you get much farther into the game. Despite that, there still is a lot to like here, as it still is very memorable and unique as a whole product.

Gameplay

This is where most of Cursed to Golf’s magic can be found due to some well-thought-out mechanics. Players are set within each stage and must get the ball in the hole to move forward. It sounds simple, but the player is limited to a set number of shots. To top that off, the difficulty in nailing these shots up the drama of the game, as without precise aim, you will be cursed to die and repeat the same holes repeatedly. Adding to the difficulty is the rogue-like element, which has the player focusing on utilizing special strategies such as smashing statues and examining the world ahead in order to continue.

To cure this difficulty, players can get power-ups that assist with shots, which are very useful and make use of in the form of cards. Abilities like the Rocketball can be used to get more momentum for your shot in tight spaces, while other power-ups can add more shots or more balls at once for a better chance of success. Simply finding and smashing statues or gaining cash can get more cards, which can deepen your techniques as you get closer to a hole.  There are a lot of holes (over 70), and the world is fun to explore – so most will enjoy the addictive and polished mechanics for what they are, as this title feels fit for fans of something a bit more pick-up and play.

That said, I did feel stuck back at the start a lot, as other than traveling through biomes, the game’s sense of progression is ultimately hurt by its core premise. There are some unique moments with bosses and such but getting to one can feel tedious due to the strict ball count and the reliance of trial and error. Again, this will be rewarding to most if they can overcome the obstacles ahead but may deter those looking for a more casual flow.

Visuals

Cursed to Golf feels like it would have been right at home on the Genesis or SNES with its 16-bit design. The stages are interesting and well designed, featuring fluid animations and sprites that are full of detail and personality. In a way, it feels like a perfect title to binge during the Halloween season, being reminiscent of Ghosts ‘n Goblins and the GBA Castlevania line. Sure, there could be a little more in terms of characters and such – but what is here works and no one should have any issue enjoying the sights to see within Purgatory.

Audio

The soundtrack is also great within this little gem. There is something special about hearing eerie howls during Cursed to Golf, as a lot of attention was paid to this area, and I think it will probably be just as memorable as the odd premise of the title for those that make the plunge. Sound effects are also on point, working with the music to create an atmosphere that captures the 16-bit art style well, giving this modern-day title some retro leanings for older gamers out there like myself.

Overall

Cursed to Golf isn’t perfect as I did have a couple of small hiccups with crashes during this review – but outside of the patchable, it may be one of the most difficult yet enjoyable titles to be released in a good while. Who knew being stuck golfing would be such a gnawing yet addictive experience? With a superb soundtrack and an original appeal, Cursed to Golf is one digital romp that is sure to capture a quick following due to its risky yet rewarding premise that proves some combinations are worth trying.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered Review

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

Developer: Insomniac Games, Nixxes Software
Publisher: Playstation PC
Platforms: PlayStation 4PlayStation 5PC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 12 August 2022
Price: $59.99 USD – Available Here $54.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

You know, if someone told me years ago that I would get to play the finest selection of AAA console exclusives on PC – I’d call them crazy. Especially if they’d tell me that they would all be home runs of releases, with great optimization and loads of bonus content. But that is exactly what’s happening right now. I had a chance to finally play Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, and God of War. So, now I have Marvel’s Spider-Man in my hands. It comes with a bunch of visual tweaks and improvements, a boatload of bonus costumes for our Spidey, and (saving the best for last) “The City That Never Sleeps” DLC collection of three parts. So let’s dig right into it.

Story

Compared to most movie adaptations, the story is a breath of fresh air. We don’t have to watch Uncle Ben dying for 5th time, Peter Parker discovering his powers, meeting Mary Jane, and so on. All of that already happened here. We play as young but experienced Spidey. Smart, well connected, and well acquainted with most of his villains. In any case, we are thrown in the eye of the storm as we are trying to take down Kingpin in the opening level (that also serves as a tutorial for the game).

While we succeed in doing so, captured Kingpin warns Spidey that his imprisonment will create a power vacuum on the streets of New York. And what do you know, he’s right. New villains emerge (some having a personal vendetta against Kingpin), new alliances are formed and this game also shows us the origin story of some of the most acclaimed Spider-man supervillains.

Gameplay

I know there is something that you all want to know. Web swinging. How is it? Two words: insanely amazing. I have completed the game twice by now and every once in a while, I fire it up just to swing across the rooftops of New York. Just because it’s so damn fun. But let’s talk Spidey. Even when you start the game with zero skills and gadgets, you still have a nice selection of combat moves and tactics. You can use parts of the environment to hurl into enemy faces and dodging hits and gunfire is crucial for higher difficulties. I’d split Spidey’s skills into two sections. some are essential for combat and some for web swinging and traversal.

You gain EXP for defeating enemies, completing challenges, and doing main and side missions and whenever you hit a level up you might get a stat boost (such as faster swinging, more health) or unlock a new Spider-Man costume. Although, you only unlock it. To actually craft it you have to earn enough currency from random events around New York, find collectibles, solve research station puzzles, and such. It is a pretty clever way for a game to force you into doing every single piece of content while being subtle about it. The combat system in general reminds me of freeflow combat from the Batman Arkham series, although it might feel a bit stiff in comparison. Nevertheless, the freedom of combat air juggling enemies while zipping from one to the other never stops being fun.

A notable mention goes to Spidey gadgets, that can completely change the dynamics of combat later on. Clever use of trip mines, web bombs, and impact web in closed areas can instantly clear the room of any enemies. I call them my “one hit kill” gadgets.

Visuals

When it comes to this, I usually focus on level design, and art style and talk about them like there’s no tomorrow. But Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered manages to impress me with something that rarely stands out. The visual reinvention of characters. Although he is only for a short while in the game, what they did with Electro is nothing short of amazing. For example, the big star-shaped scar on his forehead is also an homage to his classic design. The visual transformation of Doc Ock as the story goes on is as subtle as it is degenerative in how it changes his mannerism, appearance, and (former) friendship with Peter Parker.

Audio

I said above that I’ll never get tired of web-swinging in this game. Do you know what else never gets old? That joy when orchestral music kicks in whenever I dive from a skyscraper or start web swinging. Also, if you pay close attention you might notice there are two modes of dialogue for our Spidey. Throughout the game, Spider-Man is often in touch with either Mary Jane or Yuri Watanabe through voice communication, and his dialogue and shortness of breath are dependent on his web swinging. Like, if you just spent the last 5 minutes zipping from one end of the city to another and Mary Jane calls you, you might notice Spidey has trouble catching his breath and talking. Simply amazing!

Overall

I saved the best for last aka the answer to “what exactly I get in this remastered release”? Aside from insane visuals and optimization (folks at Nixxes Software really outdid themselves), you get a bunch of free costumes for Spidey that you don’t have to craft. They were released on console gradually via updates but you now have them all from the start. There is also an incredibly fun photo mode (check the last linked screenshot to see my creative genius there) and as I mentioned before – “The City That Never Sleeps” DLC collection. It is a three-part campaign set after the events of the main game that introduces new enemies, achievements, villains, and outfits.

This is the part where I would close this review with “what more could you ask for”? but the only real answer here is “nothing”. You really can’t ask for anything else. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is the fullest of all full packages and the only regret I have after sinking close to 50 hours into the game and completing it twice is that I cannot erase my memory to experience it all over again.

Quantum Matrix Technology powered by Quantum Mini LED enables ultra-fine and precise control of the densely packed LEDs with newly added 14-bit processing, enhanced by 16,384 black levels and a million-to-one static contrast ratio which showcases every detail in amazing clarity.

The Odyssey Ark is the ultimate Samsung entertainment screen, made possible by Samsung’s proprietary Matte Display and Sound Dome Technology. The Odyssey Ark is equipped with all the necessary features to deliver premium gaming, entertainment and lifestyle experiences. Smart Hub integrates essential IoT devices and functionality, allowing users to monitor and adjust settings such as temperature and humidity through the SmartThings app. Plus, a simple Wi-Fi connection enables a full Smart TV experience, giving access to popular streaming apps and free live content with no downloads or sign-ups made possible by Samsung TV Plus.[1]

Furthermore, Odyssey Ark is equipped with Ark Dial, a solar-powered controller which is exclusive to the Ark screen, allowing the quick and easy control of settings such as Flex Move Screen, Multi View, Quick Settings and Game Bar[2]. In addition to being equipped with a solar panel, the Ark Dial can also be charged by a USB Type-C connection.
