The Last Hero of Nostalgaia

Developer: Over the Moon
Publisher: Coatsink
Platforms: Xbox Series XXbox OnePC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 19 Oct 2022

Overview

Have you ever imagined yourself being transported into a video game? Would you like to be given some skill points at the start that you could allocate properly? What about a character class? You definitely thought about it, we all had those moments of daydreaming. The Last Hero of Nostalgaia kind of toys with that idea. It wants to provide a fresh approach to the narrative and insert a critique of itself as you play. It does sound like a novel idea but so let’s see how it fares in the end.

Story

Nostalgaia, the world of video games, is collapsing backward into a mysterious pixelation, with every particle of fidelity bleeding away. I guess you could say it is blackholing itself (if that even is a proper word). As you might have guessed, you play as the absolute nobody while trying to connect all the puzzle pieces of the story with a bit of sword murdering sprinkled here and there. You’re also accompanied by the cynical narrator as you play through. He can be sometimes helpful while he is not criticizing your play style and making snide remarks regarding the world of Nostalgaia.

Gameplay

The first time you spawn into the world of Nostalgaia, you look like nothing much. Actually, less than nothing. A pixelated stick figure barely resembling a human. Your sword and shield seem to have more details and polygons than you. After a short tutorial evoking the similar steps you took if you played Dark Souls, we get to our first enemies. And it’s right there that you can see this game actually puts some effort when it comes to gameplay. The first few enemies can be a walk in the part, but everything past that requires a certain level of strategic combat. So no rushing in, backing yourself into a corner by accident, and getting overwhelmed from all sides.

I wanted to avoid a lot of (if any) comparisons to Dark Souls and soulslike games in general but there are some obvious shared things here when it comes to gameplay. Strong attacks, heavy attacks, blocking, evading, leveling up at the bonfire, weird NPCs being hidden in most obscure places, side quests, and so on. In any case, the combat system is anything but an afterthought. As you explore more and more, the world of Nostalgaia will seem more fleshed out, but the same could be said for you. After you grab some decent armor sets, you can say goodbye to looking like a pair of glowing sticks.

Visuals

The first hour of playing The Last Hero of Nostalgaia was a bit underwhelming. The monochromatic brown would follow me everywhere I go and only after I said goodbye to the starting area, I started to notice some slight diversity in level design. Emphasis on slight. Most of the areas you see in this game are derivative of something that is already seen, with minor changes or improvements. A bit more effort went into the enemy design and even weapons but the game doesn’t entice you to play much when you can just expect more of the same in terms of visuals and level design.

Audio

Luckily, there is our (un)reliable narrator to spice things up a little. The sound design in this game is good and above average but he is really the star of the show. I enjoyed his frustrating monologues, random jabs, and pokes at the world of Nostalgaia, the player, his critique of your play style, and much more. He never overstays his welcome, most become he is in that sweet spot of talking from time to time and not being needlessly talkative and annoying (shout out to my man Claptrap!)

Overall

The Last Hero Nostalgaia is a deceptive game. My first impression (before I got to actually play it) was of a game that was stitched in a week or two to exploit the soulslike fever way too late. Also, there is always a danger with these “meta” games using satire and self-awareness as some sort of cheap tactic to be excused from any criticism. Something like “it’s fine because we are totally in on the joke” even though the joke is pretty unfunny at times. But none of that is the case with The Last Hero of Nostalgaia.

While it could have used much more diversity when it comes to level design and color palette in general, the core of the game is surprisingly good. It is the voice acting and above-average combat system that makes this game a hidden gem and it is a good example of how you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.

Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN Esports – F1 Esports Series Pro Championship: Event 2

Hinwil, 15 October 2022 – Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN Esports saw its efforts being rewarded with points at the end of a rather successful Event Two of the F1 Esports Series Pro Championship. Drivers Nico Longuet, Dani Bereznay, and Tomek Poradzisz lined up in the newly unveiled Sauber Esports Arena, the brand-new home of the team’s Esports activities, for the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds of the 2022 championship.

Round Four, in Austria, saw Frenchman Longuet easily nailing qualifying and lining up in P6 on the grid, maintaining the great pace showed during the race, in which he ended in fifth place. Unfortunately, Dani Bereznay couldn’t go past Q1, and his misfortunes continued in the race, in which he ended in P17 after a penalty. Slightly different results followed for both drivers in Round Five, at the iconic Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps, with Longuet not managing to maximise his performances but still bringing home vital points for the team.

Round Six saw a line-up change, with young Pole Poradzisz replacing Bereznay. Despite a difficult qualifying session, Tomek fought his way up the grid, having already overtaken nine cars in the opening lap and ultimately grabbing his first ever point with a tenth place finish, and also being awarded Driver of the Day. Some great strategy calls during a wet race and some mega overtakes took Nico Longuet to fifth place at the chequered flag.

Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN Esports reaches the halfway point of the 2022 season in sixth place in the Constructors standings with 35 points. The team will return to racing on 2-4 November for Rounds Seven, Eight and Nine in Monza, Mexico, and Austin.

Round Four: Austria
Nico Longuet (car number 40): 5th
Dani Bereznay (car number 15): 17th

Round Five: Belgium
Nico Longuet (car number 40): 8th
Dani Bereznay (car number 15):14th

Round Six: The Netherlands
Nico Longuet (car number 40): 5th
Tomek Poradzisz (car number 37): 10th

Cameron Cowell, Team Principal: “Event Two marked a step in the right direction for our team. Competing from the brand-new Sauber Esports Arena, we showed our best performances to date, bringing home more points which moved us up to P6 in the Constructors standings. I am proud of Tomek, who showed great maturity to go from 20th to 10th place in a wet race, which was only his second one in the series. He managed to grab his first points ever – as well as being awarded Driver of the Day. Over the three days of competition, Nico showed his class in qualifying as he hit Q3 in every race, as well as consistently finishing in points. Mixed fortunes for Dani, who was just a little bit off the pace at times but showed promise with his race pace. I know that he will be back fighting in Event Three to show all his potential.”

Nico Longuet: “Qualifying in Event Two was extremely good for me, having lined up sixth, fifth and third on the grid. Austria was a really intense race, with many overtakes, defending, and extremely aggressive strategy calls from our side and it almost worked out, as I finished in P5. In Spa, I suffered the undercut because we didn’t pit at the right moment and from then onwards, I was just stuck in a DRS train and finished eighth. In Zandvoort, the race plan was looking extremely good to challenge for the win, but a Turn One incident put me in 12th place and from then on it became a recovery drive, managing to cross the finish line in fifth place. Congratulation to Tomek for the massive job in getting points from starting P20, that was very good for the team standings. Event Three is now coming up very fast and we have a lot of work to do in a little amount of time, to improve even more and grab more points.”

Dani Bereznay: “Austria was quite average from my side, a little mistake didn’t let me go past Q1 in qualifying and going wide at the start just made my race more difficult, ultimately finishing 17th due to a penalty. Spa has always been one of my best tracks, so logically I really hoped for a great performance from myself. I made it through Q2, but then again I had a difficult race and finished 14th because of another penalty. I am working really hard behind the scenes to improve myself in the live qualifying sessions. It’s nice to walk away with some progress, but still not as big of a progress as I wanted, so virtual helmet visors down and sweat, sweat, sweat for more performance on the rest of the season. Let’s go!”

Tomek Poradzisz: “I was never 100% comfortable driving in Zandvoort, but I always found good pace around the track in the past. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to show it this time with a really bad qualifying performance – finishing last in Q1. I thought all hope for a good performance was lost, but the race turned out to be a crazy one, and with great strategy decisions in the changing conditions I sneaked my way into the Top 10 and my first points finish, also walking away with a Driver of the Day award. I am absolutely buzzing. It might be just a single point, but it’s what I needed to get my season on track and to break that mental barrier of having zero points next to my name. I’m heading into Event Three with great motivation to do even better and bring more good points for the team, as Top Five in the Constructors Championship is still very much achievable.”

Overview

What makes a game scary? When is a movie a horror movie and when it is not? These are all broad questions with subjective answers. Things that I find scary in movies or video games might not be scary to you and vice versa. For some, it is the emphasis on violence, gore, and jump scares and some expect nothing but a well-created atmosphere, and nothing else is needed. When it comes to video games, pretty much everything today is lumped under the label of horror. Body horror and gratuitous gore are usually the cheapest shortcuts to that label but it is somewhat rare to find a horror game that advertises itself as having more emphasis on the atmosphere. It’s even rare to find horror games that are successful at it.

A few days ago I did some gameplay for Scorn. In the tweet for the gameplay video, I wrote about “what would happen if H. R. Giger and Zdzislaw Beksinski joined forces to make a video game”. So if you want to see some good horror imagery, hit up Google Images and check out his works. If you want to go the extra mile, well…….let me tell you about Scorn.

Story

Well, one of the sure ways to create a tense atmosphere is with the help of a well-written story. Or we can just make it to be as minimalistic as possible. The approach of “show, don’t tell”. And Scorn has such sights to show us (pats himself on the back for that sneaky Hellraiser reference). In any case, you start your journey by waking up and realizing you look like that guy from the cover of Tool’s album Lateralus. No time to find out who we are or what are we doing here, our first instinct is to escape (and perhaps even learn more about the world that we’re in).

Gameplay

Even though the devs point out that Scorn is not a first-person shooter I feel like there might be some inconsistency between them and most of the promotional videos showing the game. One might get the wrong impression that they are watching a horror FPS while in reality, the shooting is only a small part of the game. In fact, it feels like it was slapped onto the game as an afterthought. Shooting at enemies, evading and running around them is often clumsy as it is frustrating.

What you will be doing most of the game is exploring and solving puzzles. And oh my God, let me tell you about puzzles. There are a lot of them, they’re original, grotesque, and might often push you on the verge of a mental breakdown. But oh man, that catharsis once you finally figure it out is something that cannot be properly put into words. There is also a certain level of leeway when it comes to solving puzzles. One of the first puzzles in the game requires you to open a door that was two locks. After some exploration, you find one humanoid and deformed creature that can barely move. You can either guide it to one contraption that will kill him along with his shell so you can rip off the arm from his body and use it on the door lock. But there is also another one that can crack his shell and release it without killing him so you can slowly guide him to that lock. The first choice is somewhat faster so it all boils down to your level of patience and morality.

Visuals

What makes Scorn different and above the rest is, of course, its unique visual design. Everything just feels so…organic. The weapons, the pulsating machinery throughout the game, items you find along the way, even the walls. The atmosphere of the game manages to accomplish something that I have yet to encounter in horror games. The feeling of dread and fear is so overwhelming that the thought of being alone in that world is far worse than expecting some nasty creatures around every corner.

Scorn also comes with a clever level design. You might not notice it at first, but eventually, you’ll realize that pretty much everything is interconnected. That locked door at the start of the game? Play long enough and one of the areas might just loop you back to it once you get the tool to unlock it.

While enemy encounters are somewhat rare, you are not the only living thing in that universe. The overall design of enemies and other creatures is often reminiscent of Silent Hill. They tend to be erratic while moving, in constant pain, and usually missing big chunks of their skin. Just like you.

Audio

When it comes to sound, Scorn has a crafty approach. Not much music to expect but the unnerving atmosphere of the game is always amplified by the ominous ambient and background noise. The soundtrack is always tied to where you are in the game and it often changes and brings itself into focus based on your location. Whenever you come close to a major structure or machinery, the soundtrack will properly respond to it. Another thing worth pointing out is that most of the weapons (besides looking all fleshy and slimy and organic) also sound as if you’re carrying some pulsating organism that might have been ripped straight out of something else that was alive moments ago.

Overall

Scorn is a slow burn. A game that won’t pull any punches. It lures you in with the art but the real selling point is the atmosphere. The lingering feeling of insignificance and the menacing presence of cosmic horror are your only companions. Maybe the best compliment that I could give the game is that it is incomparable. The level of tension and dread that you feel as you play through it is something that any future games have yet to replicate.

Scorn Gameplay

Join us in a gross and grotesque adventure as we are forced to dismember someone to solve a puzzle, get ourselves a weapon and venture deeper into the creepiest wasteland you could possibly imagine.

Scorn is an atmospheric first-person horror adventure game set in a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry.

It is designed around the idea of “being thrown into the world”. Isolated and lost inside this dream-like world, you will explore different interconnected regions in a non-linear fashion. The unsettling environment is a character itself.

Every location contains its own theme (story), puzzles and characters that are integral in creating a cohesive world. Throughout the game you will open up new areas, acquire different skill sets, weapons, various items and try to comprehend the sights presented to you.
