Full steam ahead! World of Warships takes players on a journey around the world

Get a latitude adjustment by battling it out in the newly added Seychelles map alongside an Allied Heroes Collection, the addition of a Japanese Tier IX ship in the Dockyard and plenty of hololive production Commanders all introduced in its latest update

April 18thWargaming, the publisher and developer of the leading naval multiplayer World of Warships, is sailing all around the world in its latest update. Packed with content, this update sees Japanese Tier IX battleship Daisen in the Dockyard, an exotic new map of the Seychelles added into the game, plus a collection themed around the Allied powers of World War II. On top of this, hololive production makes a return to the game, with four new VTuber Commanders to take the lead in battle.

Daisen Drops Anchor in the Dockyard

A new challenge kicks off in the Kure Dockyard, with the construction of Japanese Tier IX Battleship Daisen. Sitting at the end of a 34-stage shipbuilding process, which includes plenty of combat missions, Daisen is a worthy prize to pursue. The vessel boasts high speeds, eight accurate 410mm guns, and four high-reach quadruple torpedo tubes to impart significant damage, all of which more than make up for the ship’s less robust armour and hit points. To make the construction site a bit more festive, the Kure Port has been decorated in celebration of this undertaking.

Sail into the Seychelles

Expanding the horizons of Warships’ waters, a new map of the tropical Seychelles Islands has been introduced in Update 12.3. Bearing strong resemblance to the mountainous islands of Praslin and La Digue, this new, leafy green map will be available for both Random and Co-op Battles. Ships spanning Tier V-IX can compete in Domination mode with four key areas, scattered across the map in two different variations.

A New Allied Heroes Collection

World of Warships also welcomes a themed “Allied Heroes” Collection in dedication to the end of World War II in Europe. With 12 different elements to collect, players who complete each section will be rewarded with corresponding Commanders for the allied nations, each equipped with 10 skill points. These elements can be found through new “Allied Heroes” containers, which are obtainable for credits and free XP in the Armory. Sitting at the end of the entire collection is a redeemable three-days of Warships Premium Account.

Say Hello to hololive production

Closing out Update 12.3’s content drop, hololive production characters make a return to the game. Four Japanese virtual bloggers (VTubers) join the ranks of Commanders. Choose from different commanders including Watson Amelia and Takanashi Kiara, who are each equipped with their own unique voiceover, to take the helm in battle. Alongside these new additions, this partnership also introduces a special expendable camouflage and a commemorative flag.

This update also brings a number of bug fixes, upgrades and balance changes across the game.

HOOK, LINE AND SINKER: ANOTHER FISHERMAN’S TALE REELS IN MAY 11th RELEASE DATE

The sequel to the 2019 VR Game of the Year will arrive on May 11th for the PS VR2, Meta Quest 2, and all PC VR platforms.

Sydney, Australia – April 18th, 2023 – Ahoy, sailor! Vertigo Games, the VR publishing and development arm of the PLAION Group, as well as developer InnerspaceVR have revealed Another Fisherman’s Tale, the sequel to the critically-acclaimed A Fisherman’s Tale, will launch on May 11th for the PS VR2, Meta Quest 2, and all PC VR platforms. To celebrate the announcement, Vertigo and InnerspaceVR have shared a brand-new gameplay video with developer commentary from Creative Director and Co-Founder Balthazar Auxietre and Game Director Alexis Moroz, showcasing the first portion of the game’s second chapter, including a daring escape and demonstrations of the game’s core body-augmenting mechanics. Check out the new video below!

Watch: Another Fisherman’s Tale Gameplay Developer Showcase HERE

Another Fisherman’s Tale was developed from the ground-up to maximise the capabilities of modern VR tech, completely revamping the gameplay of its predecessor: this time, the player’s own body is the key to solving the puzzles, creating unconventional mechanics based on dismantling and rebuilding their in-game form. Players take on the role of Nina—the daughter of the original game’s protagonist—as she discovers models, notes and photographs that document her father’s mysterious past, as well as her own childhood. Recollecting Bob the Fisherman’s grandiose stories of pirates, sunken ships, treasures and mystical locations, Nina begins re-enacting his adventures and dives head-first into an imaginative world of memory and fantasy. Will she be able to separate fact from fiction and uncover the hidden truth behind the Fisherman’s tale?

Featuring a total reinvention of its predecessor’s mechanics, Another Fisherman’s Tale imagines a world where YOU are the key:

DETACH limbs and hands from your body and physically control them remotely. Throw Bob’s hand across a ravine and then make it crawl to retrieve an object, or send your head elsewhere for a different view of things.

REPLACE any of your limbs with a variety of objects to unlock new skills. Pirate hook hands allow you to climb up walls, a crab’s claw can cut through a rope in a pinch, and a fish’s tail will improve your swimming ability.

CONTROL your environment with your puppeteering hands, picking up distant objects, items and tools and interacting with each level’s unique layout.

WWE 2K23 Review

WWE 2K23

Developer: Visual Concepts
Publisher: 2K
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 (Reviewed), Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Release Date: March 14, 2023 – Available Now
Price: $69.99 USD – Available Here – $119.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

It’s been over a year since Visual Concepts got the WWE titles back on track with WWE 2K22. While not perfect, the entry was a turning point, delivering something fans could enjoy after a long period of dark times for a franchise that had certainly had its better days in the past. WWE 2K23 is “Even Stronger” this time around, with promises to deliver even more refinement. Can John Cena and a fresh roster bring out the best in this installment? Let’s find out.

Story

The Story found in WWE 2K23 is about what you would expect, and mainly found within the two main modes, Showcase and MyRise. Showcase mode this year highlights the career of John Cena. This time however, players get the change things up a bit as it is focused on the WWE Legend’s losses over his career, where you will get to play as some of his famous opponents and defeat Cena, recreating standout moments that lead to his own defeat in these said matches. I love that we finally get to see a pivot in this mode to change it up and while I am still not a huge fan of the pre-choreopgraphed mannerisms, it was a refreshing change that did keep things more interesting this year.

MyRise also has some improvements, with the narrative being the most noticeable. Players take control of their own “up and comer” labeled “The Lock” – where they will rise up the ranks while trying to avoid their contract from changing who they are as a WWE Superstar. Basically, WWE has your career set out how they see fit this time around, and your choices to go against that will effect your road to be a top WWE Superstar. Its a better plot with more focus on the story this time, as minor details such as backstage segments and interaction all do a better job at keeping you on track with the plot without straying into “filler” territory like past entries.

Gameplay

The gameplay at first glance remains unchanged outside of a few nuances during matches. For those who enjoyed playiing last year’s competent release, this will be a breath of fresh air as there are less glitches and frustration to be found, as refining the old seems to be the mindset visual concepts went in with for WWE 2K23. Change is mostly found with the newly improved stamina system. Much like older entries, this mechanic puts more emphasis on stamina, where over-exertion can lead to slowdown as a character becomes winded and slow. Players must now try to balance their attacks and combos wisely, bringing some fresh strategy to the already solid performance the game brings with it.

The Payback system also got a slight change as well, allowing players to sacrifice their built “Special” meter in order to gain more opportunity to utilize match-defining abilities. Sure, it isn’t a huge change, but one that adds to re-balancing this product in the right direction. There are other changes such as match types with 8-man tags now online and the heavily anticipated “War Games” match that can be quite chaotic, but mostly, this is last year’s product packaged in a new skin. I think Visual Concepts seemed super focused on keeping things consistent and “safe” this year, and for the most part that works. This is still a far better game than the heavily criticized 2K20 and a jump above WWE 2K22 due to the balancing fixes. That said, there still are issues that are not quite addressed.

The Creation Suite is bigger and better than ever before, but minor issues such as parts not displaying correctly on saved characters and creation still feeling too heavy for the game to handle is still a problem that needs to be addressed. This mode is one of the most advanced creation suites in the entire games industry and I get there are a lot of moving parts, but fixes need to be implemented instead of having older problems carry over from game to game. The simulation vs arcade battle this franchise has always had is still present as well, as things as simple as pinning still have issues, even with applied changes this year. It isn’t the mini-games as much as it is the pacing of the mini-games during online interaction that shows the flaws of these mechanics. Players who have slower connections roam online, and the lag and input latency cause a lot of frustration to those who simply are trying to recreate their favorite moments of the squared circle.

Gripes aside, the game feels more polished, clean, and even more fluid if you will. The roster updates are well thought out and the flow of matches are closer to anything we have gotten in years to resemble the actual product. Almost every major issue from last year as been cleaned up such as MyGM mode being more advanced and enjoyable, to advanced created entrances finally coming back. That said, this is still a WWE Game and longtime fans are sure to find the bumps in the road to be annoying, even if there is still a lot to respect with the direction Visual Concepts are going.

Visuals

In some ways, the graphics have never looked better for a wrestling game than what they do in WWE 2K23. Part of this is due to a better adaptation into the current generation, but a lot is due to refinement of older animations and arenas that make that product feel alive and real. Superstar entrances look fantastic and for the first time, created wrestlers appear to be on par with the default roster within the game, which is a major improvement. As addressed, there are some visual bugs and animation glitches, but most are more minor and take little away from the gameplay, with a lot less crashing and loading times occurring during sequences that utilize wrestlers and arenas from the creation suite.

Audio

I still am not a fan of the default soundtrack, but hey – that is just preference and I am sure there is an audience who will eat these licensed tracks up. The music for entrances is fantastic, and commentary is also decent enough this year to make these moments feel more impactful and genuine. The voice acting for MyRise is a bit of a mixed bag, but still on a better track as the talent seems to be much more involved with their parts, making the narrative feel more important overall.

Overall

WWE 2K23 isn’t a huge change from the last installment in most ways. What it does do right is improve just enough without taking major steps back. Sure, I miss this franchise taking risks and trying new things, but for the sake of getting yearly releases – what we have here is good enough for any fan to go into and have a good time with a lot less focus on navigating bugs and issues than ever before. That alone makes 2K23 one of the best installments in years, and one title that will hopefully continue to evolve as Visual Concepts moves forward. “Even Stronger” is a great tagline for a title that hits most the right notes without polarizing its own audience, and safe or not – is doing a great job at keeping this franchise on track back to greatness.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure Review

The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure

Developer: Falcom
Publisher: NIS America
Platforms: Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $49.99 USD – Available Here $79.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

There was once a time that the Crossbell arc of games from The Legend of Heroes franchise seemed forever locked to Japan with no official way to ever experience the two games that featured characters and events that would play into later events in the franchise but that all changed last year when NIS America brought over the HD release of the first game in the Crossbell arc, Trails from Zero. This time around, the publisher wasn’t about to let fans sit and wait for the conclusion to this story arc as six months later, we now have the release of Trails to Azure, looking to finish the story. With the first game offering a quality storyline and satisfying gameplay, has Trails to Azure managed to reach the same level of excellence?

Story

A few months have passed since the events of Trails from Zero and the members of the Special Support Section (SSS) have split up to focus on a number of important tasks that have fallen to them as the group has now become a household name, well respected by the residents of Crossbell and even the local guilds. Lloyd Bannings, the leader of the group, finds himself working alongside a number of important figures as he hunts down some loose ends from the previous game’s events. Once completed, he quickly finds himself joining back up with Elie, though the reunion with Randy and Tio will take just a bit longer.

In the meantime, Lloyd introduces two new members to the SSS, though they will be familiar faces for fans as Noel Seeker, the former sergeant of the Crossbell Guardian Force, and Wazy Hemisphere now join the team as permanent members. Noel serves as a great addition to the cast with her loyal but easy to confound personality, while Wazy continues his playful yet aloof interactions with the rest of the cast. This bit of extra breathing room allows players to get reacquainted with these two characters again and learn a bit more about them and witness their interactions with the townsfolk and fellow SSS members, as writers have already had an entire game to flesh out the original four party members. That being said, the original cast members still get plenty of love throughout the story with a number of major character arcs developing nicely as the game progresses. Of course, letting these character interactions and developments shine doesn’t stop Trails to Azure from being one of the best-paced and well-written storylines in the entire franchise as even the signature slower start of The Legend of Heroes games doesn’t quite apply here since this game hits the ground running.

With political turmoil brewing throughout the city and the surrounding nations, numerous dangerous organizations moving into the region, and threats from the past resurfacing, Trails to Azure’s storyline goes places that fans will definitely not be expecting, as it almost constantly keeps players guessing as to what can happen next. It also helps that there are a number of more personal stakes intertwined with these conflicts as well, with the writers taking full advantage of the bonds players have built up through the first game to pull at their heartstrings in this following release. It must be said that, outside of the introduction and a more slice of life intermission that gives fans a bit of breathing room, this storyline is one that keeps things interesting and well-paced throughout, with a number of unexpected twists, dramatic moments, and even a number of special appearances from familiar faces, both good and bad. Combine this with the character moments that the franchise is known for and Trails to Azure tells a gripping and emotional tale that players will adore.

When it comes to a game in The Legend of Heroes franchise the question that always comes up is whether this is a good place to start and when it comes to Trails to Azure the answer is certainly no. While the game does provide a summary of what happened in Trails from Zero as well as character profiles for nearly all of the important characters in the first game it really would do players a disservice to jump in here. Not only is it because Trails to Azure‘s storyline feels like a natural continuation to the events of the previous entry but it capitalizes on other games in the series as well, giving those who have been with the series since the Sky trilogy even more to enjoy as a result, though this amount of experience  isn’t required to get the most out of the game. Thankfully, with both Crossbell games being available on the same platforms and within a year of each other, those looking to experience this story can find themselves enjoying Trails from Zero just as much before diving into and understanding so much more of what Trails to Azure has to offer as a result.

Gameplay

In most ways Trails to Azure will be quite familiar for returning players as most of the gameplay elements remain the same. Dungeon exploration and combat remains mostly the same as fights still take place on a turn based grid where positioning can play a major role in determining how many targets the player can attack at a time as well as moving out of an incoming attack from an enemy’s AoE skill while also taking advantage of Arts that can interrupt Craft casting or delaying the turn of a target.

This time around though players will eventually see their standard four person party grow to a mostly permanent six character crew with two fighters set as reserves during battle, though even this can be adjusted a bit as various guest characters will also join from time to time. The reserve party members can be swapped in during the middle of combat but they will also occasionally jump in and make an attack of their own or provide a valuable buff to the team as a bonus and once again giving players plenty of tools and options for taking on the numerous types of enemies they come across. It is also worth noting that, since this is the second game in the story arc, players start around level 45, providing quite a few Arts to work with right off the bat.

Another element that has been modified a bit is the Orbment system and this is mostly thanks to the addition of a familiar element from more recent games in the series, a Master Quartz. Players will still use the combat orbments to determine what types of magic a character can cast as well as how many spells they have access to but with the addition of Master Quartz the party can now see some significant buffs and extra stats. To add to this, every Master Quartz has its own elemental property giving players a chance to take customization to another level by providing more ways to unlock additional Crafts for their characters or even going all in to unlock high-level elemental Crafts far earlier than usual. It is also worth noting that a Burst System which allows players to fill up a gauge that, when triggered, offers massive boosts to the party and lets them deal massive damage to the enemy, is also offered in key moments throughout the story as well as the entirety of the final chapter giving players something that can prove to be an extra leg up on some notably difficult boss encounters.

Exploration in Trails to Azure is mostly handled the same as well though it is worth noting that, unlike the first game, Crossbell opens up to players far faster than before. Along with this players will quickly gain access to a vehicle that allows for fast traveling between areas, mercifully reducing the amount of backtracking which comes as an extra boon thanks to the fact that players will be treading through mostly familiar areas most of the time though the option to speed up the game also returns. There are some new locations peppered throughout the game including many of the primary dungeons but players will be seeing a lot of reuse throughout their journey here. It is also nice to note that NIS America and the localization team they worked with has provided a lot of extra content throughout the game, including the always enjoyable easter eggs that are talking treasure chests that not only reward an exploring player with treasure but also some extra dialogue when inspected twice.

Visuals & Audio

Once again the art style chosen by Nihon Falcom has held up incredibly well as this PSP original game has seen a noticeable improvement with its release on the PlayStation 4, though once again this version of the game does not benefit the most from these improvements. While character portraits remain as bright and colorful as ever and the character sprites are handled incredibly well in and outside of combat, there are some noticeably blurry looking textures during exploration and other rougher areas that are apparently far better looking on the Switch and PC versions of the game. That being said, Trails to Azure still looks great here in 2023 even with the PlayStation 4 version being not quite up to snuff compared to other platforms thanks to the aforementioned quality of sprite work, character portraits, and details with Arts and Crafts in combat.

Just like its predecessor, Trails from Azure features only the original Japanese voice track accompanied by an expertly handled English text localization that offers a massive amount of dialogue and flavor text that truly does this story justice. Speaking of expertly handled, the soundtrack found in Trails from Azure does just that as the game features some of the best background music that an RPG can ask for with impressive music tracks all around and a number of absolutely outstanding battle tracks used for boss battles.

Overall

It takes a lot of work to surpass something that was already seen as impressive but between Falcom’s development and NIS America’s work on localization The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure has done just that. Trails to Azure manages to improve upon nearly every aspect of Trails from Zero and while it still may have some shortcomings this RPG features an excellently paced storyline with great character arcs and an outstanding soundtrack that anyone that happens to be a fan of RPGs needs to try out, even if they have to start from Zero to do it.

Vivian the Military Scholar is well-versed in the affairs of the countries of Valisthea and gives Clive lectures at various points in the story. Players can talk to her in the Hideout as well.

DEAD ISLAND 2 AND BIG DADDY’S BURGER BAR INVITE YOU TO “DINE WITH THE DEAD”

It’s time to visit HELL-A!

Sydney, Australia, 14th April 2023 | Ahead of the Australian launch of the highly anticipated first-person action RPG, Dead Island 2, Deep Silver and PLAION Australia have announced Dine with the Dead, a gloriously gory takeover partnership with local burger chain favourite, Big Daddy’s Burger Bar.

Starting from today, fans of Dead Island 2 can experience a taste of HELL-A and Dine with the Dead at Big Daddy’s Burger Bar Newtown, Sydney, and feast on a specially curated menu designed for the hungriest of zombie slayers to sink their teeth into.

Watch the Dine With The Dead Sizzle Video here:

Big Daddy’s Burger Bar, has been re-imagined to reflect the iconic Burger ‘66 diner featured in Dead Island 2, with a dedicated menu inspired by the game’s slayers, Jacob, Amy, Dani, Bruno, Ryan and Carla, as well as returning, fan favourite HELL-A local, Sam B.

Diners can select from hellishly good, blood curdling options such as the signature Burger ‘66 burger, Amy’s California Chill, Carla’s Charred Chicken Burger, Bruno’s Chilli Dawg, Dani’s Rockabilly Grande, and Nachos Ryan’s Way. To give the burgers extra bite, Big Daddy’s Burger Bar has created two special sauces, Sam B’s Louisiana Style Hot Sauce and Fury Mode Hot Sauce. Amy’s California Chill will help cool things down thanks to the devilishly delicious vanilla bean ice-cream, peanut butter, chocolate syrup, strawberry syrup, whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Liz Alexander, Senior Marketing & PR Manager at PLAION Australia commented on the takeover: “Dead Island 2 is set in a hellish, yet vibrant, gore-drenched vision of LA – or ‘HELL-A’ as we call it! It offers plenty of exciting quests, a crazy cast of characters and a thrilling pulp story, and this takeover of Big Daddy’s Burger Bar celebrates all of these elements.”

Liz continued: “HELL-A can be a ravenous place and this specially curated gore-geous, Dead Island 2 menu is the perfect way to sink your teeth into it. We look forward to welcoming all zombies and slayers alike to hack and slash their way into the Dine with the Dead menu ahead of the official launch of the game on April 21st.”

On the Dead Island 2 takeover, Big Daddy’s Burger Bar Area Manager, Eddie Sidhom said: “At Big Daddy’s we like to do things differently and in a way that only adds to our diners’ experience. We are big gaming fans, so to be able to activate Dead Island 2 in our stores is a real coup for our regulars.”

Eddie continued: “Our chef has immersed himself in the world of zombie horror of Dead Island 2 in order to create a menu offering to die for and worthy of any zombie-slayer!”

For those unable to make it to Newtown, the Dine with the Dead menu is also available to order for home delivery from Big Daddy’s website.
