Overview

When it comes to drawing attention to a new property, few things work quite as well as using a familiar face that fans love, especially those that grew up in the late ’80s and ’90s, as part of the game’s debut. Now, what happens when you take not just one familiar face but an entire star-studded cast of some of the most popular B movie actors of the age and build a game around them? Well, you get Crime Boss: Rockay City which looks to capitalize on its ‘90s crime filled setting and skilled cast of well-known actors and actresses to offer a fresh take on building a criminal empire only to stumble heavily for a number of reasons.

Story

The fictional Rockay City in Florida has been a hot-bed of crime making it a perfect place for someone looking to make their mark in the crime world to stake their claim and Travis Baker is ready to do just that. When the “King” of the criminal underground is suddenly removed from the picture, it creates a massive power vacuum just waiting for the right person to step up, even if it means taking on four other powerful gangs and dealing with an ever increasing police presence to do it.

Most of what Crime Boss: Rockay City has to offer in the way of storytelling comes from its primary gameplay mode, Baker’s Battle, that plays out in a sort-of roguelike manner. As players advance through the days they will encounter various events, first introducing many of the famous actors that appear throughout the game as well before focusing more on showcasing the criminal elements and rise to crime. Being a roguelike, players are expected to die and restart the story a bit better off each time while also experiencing different events and, for the most part, Crime Boss: Rockay City handles this well-enough after the initial introductions as players never quite know just quite how their rivals may act while playing through the campaign each time though there is a lot of recycling done throughout multiple events.

The biggest highlights of the missions and events players can undertake are the various side-stories that feature original characters that actually have mostly complete stories to experience that see players take on new types of missions ranging from a mercenary on the hunt for a certain briefcase, a soldier fighting battles in the Vietnam war, and more. These side-stories are time-limited and often have some solid semblance of storytelling on their own but unfortunately the actual story development of Baker’s crew and the writing itself is a massive letdown even when paired up with the way each playthrough unfolds. This is primarily thanks to the fact that the title squanders the star power it has as, outside of Michael Madsen’s handling of Baker, Michael Rooker as Touchdown, and perhaps Danny Glover as the aptly named Gloves nearly all of the other characters barely play a role in the game. Even Damion Poitier and Kim Basinger, who work as Baker’s close aides in his criminal schemes, are handled poorly with stiff cutscene interactions. Other crime bosses barely feel like they play a role other than having a celebrity face, with a few notable characters literally having no dialogue. Combine the squandered celebrities with a mostly generic rise to power filled with recycled scenes and awkwardly stilted cutscenes and players will find themselves struggling to find reasons to go through Baker’s Battle once they’ve succeeded.

Gameplay

Crime Boss: Rockay City offers a handful of gameplay modes though players will likely be spending the majority of their time playing through the story mode that is the previously mentioned Baker’s Battle. This is because the other two modes available in the game, Crime Time and Urban Legends are incredibly generic and simply place players in the same type of missions that they experience in the campaign mode. Crime Time allows players to team up with three other players online to complete heists or other operations while Urban Legends also allow players to play online with a team of other players or even bots in a small set of missions, also taken from the campaign, with a thin veneer of a story stringing them together.

Successfully becoming the new King of Rockay City’s criminal underground involves taking over all of the territory on the map and doing so will require a lot of cash and firepower. Players will obtain money daily from the various territories they own as well as from small-scale robberies such as robbing small stores, other gangs’ warehouses, and even lifting things from a police investigation but the biggest scores come from large scale targets. These missions involve breaking into a bank, smashing into an armored car, and many other lucrative opportunities. Regardless of the size of the heist, players can bring up to four team members with them on a mission though each member of the crew, outside of the boss himself, can only go on one mission a day and if they happen to die, they will be gone forever and if Baker himself dies then the entire run is finished.

All robberies play out in a mostly similar fashion as the crew arrives on the scene and must try their best to obtain their loot without raising too much of an alarm. Players will have three levels of suspicion before police are called with actions such as being seen on camera, caught picking a lock, and other acts raising it by one level a piece. Of course, shooting anyone will immediately trigger a fight but unfortunately stealth is often a complete non-starter in the game. Whether it is a stealth kill that fails to trigger properly, cameras that can see players through obstacles, an often ineffective “intimidate” command, or even the occasional instant fail due to a random event, players will almost always find themselves in a shootout with the police one way or another.

Ally AI is thankfully rather intelligent as they will properly shoot at police and rival gangsters though they will often opt to leave loot behind rather than grab bags though this can be remedied by simply tossing bags at them and grabbing more yourself. As for the enemy AI, things are a bit of a mixed bag. Police come in waves of ever increasing power and can often feel like they are simply funneling into a kill zone without any challenge while, at other times and on lower threat levels, players will find themselves dropped with pinpoint accuracy from a distance away. As for the gunplay, players will find a wide-array of weapons available to them and each weapon, with the exception of a few pistols and one of the assault rifles, feel incredibly stiff and unresponsive when used in combat. Rapid fire guns are the worst in this regard with SMGs and LMGs feeling completely lackluster when fired though melee is also completely ineffective when not done as a stealth attack… when it properly registers.

Outside of the heists players will find themselves needing to take over and defend territories from rival gangs. Some locations can be completely empty and can be taken over at the cost of a few soldiers to defend the area though most will see players needing to lead a team to assault a location. Playing as Touchdown, they will take part in a Team Deathmatch style of gameplay where they must eliminate a certain number of enemies before taking down their Lieutenant to take over a location while defending simply sees players having to eliminate all attacking enemies. This deathmatch gameplay is simplistic at best and glitchy at worst as there were a couple of battles that saw enemies spawn directly in front of the character, riddling them with bullets instantly at the cost of a life. Along these same lines, ally AI can be rather iffy in territory battles with players often needing to do the lion’s share of the work even when bringing a surplus of soldiers with them.

Unfortunately, outside of the special missions that see players taking on the role of an original character in a side-story, that is all the gameplay boils down to, two separate modes that will be repeated ad nauseum throughout the game with only a little variation depending on the level. Players will never find themselves interacting with other crime bosses nor will they even interact with Chuck Norris as the detective outside of him appearing when the player either dies or is captured by the police at the end of a run. This lack of actual content from the celebrity cast is a shock considering the star power Crime Boss: Rockay City has at its fingertips or even mission variety is a massive disappointment that quickly begins to drag.

Being a roguelike, players will level up their Crime Boss as they make their way through the campaign. Every level players can choose from one of three perks that will carry over permanently, ranging from increased health and damage for Travis, earning more money from loot, having better starting gear or extra territories, and more. These little bonuses are a nice way to make sure every subsequent run is a little easier but, as mentioned before, the lack of standard mission variety is the biggest damper to rerunning through the game.

Visuals & Audio

With Crime Boss: Rockay City bringing so much star power to the table it only makes sense that the development team put as much effort as possible into creating authetic looking facial scans of the cast. The characters in the game look absolutely fantastic with cutscenes looking realistic as characters talk with one another. The city is also well-detailed with plenty of neon lights and fancy looking explosions though there is a lack of map variety that will quickly become apparent. Even the designs of the guns are nicely handled with some of the more powerful weapons having unique looking paint jobs or etchings to make them stand out from standard firearms.

Unfortunately for as impressive as the cutscenes and the characters in them look, the way they sound is often quite terrible. Despite having talented actors as part of their cast, most of the voice work must have been recorded in separate sessions and, especially in Chuck Norris’ case, awful sound booths. Madsen, Glover, and Rooker sound perfectly fine and fit their characters quite nicely even if they are playing their signature roles turned up to the max but the rest of the cast, if they talk at all, sound quite terrible with stilted conversations. Thankfully the soundtrack features a great collection of background music that fits perfectly with the ‘90s setting and criminal themes.

Overall

When Crime Boss: Rockay City was first shown off it highlighted its celebrity cast and ability to rise through the crime world in fantastic fashion and at its core it has that type of potential but it has fallen short in almost every regard here outside of some stellar looking facial captures. Perhaps due to a lack of time or money the game lacks polish in nearly every regard with repetitive gameplay, lackluster storytelling, and a near complete squandering of its celebrity cast. Crime Boss: Rockay City has potential in its bones to be something far better than it is now but unfortunately this crime boss is better left sleeping with the fishes.

Siege Your Way to Victory in KOEI TECMO’s NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening, Available July 20, 2023

Assess the Battlefield and Strike the Citadel with an Array of Weapons and Strategies!

BURLINGAME, Calif. — April 21, 2023 — Today, KOEI TECMO America and developer Kou Shibusawa revealed the latest battle details for their upcoming historical simulation NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening. The 16th entry in Kou Shibusawa’s famed franchise, NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening mixes military might with political diplomacy in a quest to conquer Japan’s Warring States. The title will be available digitally in North America on July 20, 2023 and is currently in development for PlayStation4, Nintendo Switch, and PC Windows via Steam.

In NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening, players will experience the troubled times of the Warring States Period, 16th century Japan through the virtual life of a daimyō, a powerful Japanese leader, land owner, and feudal lord. Leading their troops to battle can be tricky, however, as the daimyō must quickly assess every situation on a rapidly changing battlefield in order to successfully take control of the map. First order of business is the march. Look across the land and choose the marching route carefully, as certain routes may be beset with obstacles, including roads too narrow for large troop movements, or even an enemy fortress! By choosing the wrong route, you could lead your army into a devastating situation.

But that’s not the only danger you’ll face. If there are any small battles happening nearby a daimyō’s unit, then one major battle can be launched to settle the fight. Allies and enemies nearby will assemble at a single battlefield to determine the clan’s future, and the results could have significant impact on surrounding clans, truly testing the daimyō’s ability as a military leader and political negotiator.

In NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening, the key to conquering the map is the ability to master the military art of the siege. A siege takes place when you attack an enemy’s main base or defensive position. Each castle will have a totally different battlefield, while the surrounding domains and land holders will also be involved in these large-scale conflicts. The attacking side will need to break through defensive equipment to attack the citadel while fighting across a variety of terrains including mountain castles and flatlands. To achieve victory, the daimyō will need to consider how to attack or defend based on each castle’s terrain.

Historic sites and terrain captured in the game include: Nagashima, a stronghold of the Holy Rebellion at the mouth of the Kiso Three Rivers which had many branches and blocked Oda clan’s army; Kasugayama, the castle of Kenshin Uesugi that overlooks the Sekigawa River and the Sea of Japan; Tsukui, a castle at the entrance to Yamanashi Prefecture on the Kantō Plain; and Kameyama, a castle in Mie Prefecture, located between the Suzuka Mountains and Ise Bay.

The attacking side will win the siege if they destroy all enemy units or conquer the main citadel. However, they will lose when all of their allied units are destroyed or their total morale turns to zero. Total morale decreases over time, so it is important to attack quickly. The defending side will win if they withstand the onslaught until the enemy’s total morale turns to zero, or if they destroy all enemy units. On defense, it’s important to resist enemy’s attack while protecting equipment and troops to prevent the enemy’s total morale from rising. Winning a siege will enforce your “authority” throughout the area and help your daimyo secure their spot in history!

Humanity available Day 1 as a PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue title, out May 16

Move over “International Pickle Day,” May 16 has a new number one claim to fame: it’s the launch day for Humanity! Better yet, it’ll be available on Day 1 as part of the May PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue’s lineup, available at no additional cost to PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe members.

Whether players own a PS5 or PS4, are a PS VR2 or PS VR or TV-only gamer, want to craft their own levels or just sit back and enjoy some action-platforming and puzzle-strategizing, this year May 16 is going to mean more than just “National Piercing Day.”

Check out the gloriously quirky Launch Date Announcement video here.

What did I just watch?

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) wanted to announce Humanity’s launch date with a trailer that truly reflects the game: fun, a bit weird (in a good way) and starring an adorable lil’ Shiba Inu. Oh, and importantly: clearly, undeniably Japanese.

What better way to do that than to recreate the wild – and brilliant – Japanese PlayStation ad campaigns of the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 era?

Ok, but what type of game is it?

In Humanity, players control that glowing Shiba Inu, placing commands on the ground for a giant marching horde of people to follow. Make them turn, jump, float through the air, swim, climb, etc., all to reach the goal (or goals) in each stage. The game gradually introduces these mechanics and more, combining them with each other and new elements to ramp up the challenge the further players go.

Curious to know more? Be sure to check out the gameplay trailer from February’s State of Play.

So why the doggo?

Well, why not? The dev team explored a couple of different interface approaches, from a more simple, generic cursor to having one of the humans take the lead. But considering the relationship between dogs and humans in real life and the story the developers wanted to tell, it just felt natural. If the humans in the game have lost their own will, mind, and soul, who would they want to follow without questioning it? A dog! When the devs tried it out, everything clicked.

What’s the pupper’s name?

It doesn’t have one – the shiba in the game is the player! They wake up as a Shiba Inu with no memory of what happened before, including their name.

Why PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe?

Of course SIE want as many folks as possible to enjoy Humanity’s 90-plus stage single-player Story Mode, but the most exciting part of launching into PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue is it guarantees a massive audience for the game’s robust user-generated content features: a tonne of players will be out there creating, sharing, and playing each other’s custom-built stages, right from day one.

Whoa, is that a boss fight?

That’s right. Humanity’s Story Mode stages run the gamut along the action-puzzle spectrum, from lean-forward platformer-style “action” levels that will test players reflexes, to lean-back “puzzle” head-scratchers where players might even put the controller down to think something through – and everything in-between. The game is constantly introducing new mechanics, and mixing and matching them with everything learned so far to make it always feel like a fresh, new challenge.

So what is next?

There’s a lot more Humanity to talk about – the narrative-based single-player Story Mode, optional VR compatibility (PS VR2 or PS VR), unlockable rewards, details on the super-intuitive Stage Creator, and all the crazy-amazing stuff people made and shared in User Stages during the limited-time demo, etc.

So keep an eye out for more info and videos in the coming days leading up to May 16, which this year is not just “National Barbeque Day,” but Humani-Tuesday!

This Week in GTA Online: New Deathmatches with Dynamic Loadouts, 4/20 Celebrations, and More

Fight It Out in All New Deathmatches With Dynamic LoadoutsEnjoy the Highest Holiday of Them All This Week by Embarking on Short Trips, Collecting Rare Clothing and Paraphernalia, and More

The competitive chaos in Los Santos intensifies this week as two new Deathmatches test players’ abilities with changing weaponry. Meanwhile, locals are celebrating 4/20 while distributors stand to gain from bonuses on Weed Farms. Plus, double rewards for completing Short Trips, a selection of new Community Series Jobs, and lots more.

Shake Up

Experience Shake Up — a new Free-for-All Deathmatch where each time you kill an opponent or respawn, you get given a different random weapon. Melee weapons (including fists) inflict one-hit kills, so going bare-knuckle could also be a legitimate strategy in a pinch.

Top Marks
Introducing Top Marks — an all-new Team Deathmatch where you’ll be given a unique loadout — and different radar blip behavior — depending on if your team is tied, winning, or losing. Try not to spend the whole time losing.

Both new Deathmatches are paying out 3X GTA$ and RP all week long.

CELEBRATE 4/20 WITH THESE BONUSES

It’s all going up in smoke this week as reefer madness reaches new highs in Los Santos. Have an out-of-body experience in Short Trips, stack product at your Weed Farm, and collect special accessories and other forms of assorted paraphernalia.

2X GTA$ and RP on Short Trips

Take a hit in the back room of Record A Studios and embark on Short Trips — play as Franklin and Lamar to earn 2X GTA$ and RP.

Weed Farm Bonuses

Professional growers and sellers can take advantage of doubled production speeds at Weed Farms and 2X Supplies paid out for completing Biker Resupply Missions to keep your stash stocked.

Those looking to join the green rush can shop for Weed Farm locations and upgrades (including Equipment, Staff, and Security) for their MC Business — all are 30% off as part of the 4/20 festivities.

Put together a heady outfit by completing any of this week’s objectives to collect rare clothing and accessories that boost your stoner cred, including a selection of refreshing Sprunk gear to satisfy your thirst for merch.

  • Log in to receive the High Flyer Chute Bag, Sprunk Chute Bag, and Pastel Green Smoking Jacket
  • Complete any Biker Sell Mission to receive the Sprunk Varsity Jacket
  • Become an Associate or Bodyguard to receive the Sprunk cap

3X GTA$ and RP on Lamar Contact Missions

Lamar Davis is an OG of the Los Santos gang scene. Help the living legend out by getting in touch with him using your iFruit — or the Rockstar Created section of the Jobs menu — to complete Lamar Contact Missions and earn 3X the GTA$ and RP all week long.

2X GTA$ and RP on RC Bandito Races

Take the carnage of monster-truck racing and shrink it down to curb height. All RC Bandito Races are paying out 2X GTA$ and RP through April 26.

Premium Deluxe Motorsport Showroom

Simeon Yetarian’s Premium Deluxe Motorsport showroom is jam-packed with coveted rides this week:

  • Karin Sultan Classic (Sports)
  • Vulcar Nebula Turbo (Sports Classic, 30% off)
  • Progen T20 (Super)
  • Dinka Blista Kanjo (Compact)
  • Declasse Mamba (Sports Classic)

Take any or all the above for a spin around the block, compare their specs, and cut out the middleman by making a purchase directly from Simeon.

Luxury Autos Showroom
Once you’ve visited Record A Studios, why not venture across the street? Luxury Autos has the Lampadati Tigon (Super, 30% off) and Progen Emerus (Super) available to view up close, compare their stats, and buy one – or both – on the spot.

On The Diamond Casino Podium: Übermacht Revolter
Spin the Lucky Wheel in the lobby of The Diamond Casino & Resort, and if you’re fortunate, you’ll get an Übermacht Revolter (Sports) delivered to a garage of your choice.

Leave your opponents choking on your smoke by winning any of the Races in the LS Car Meet Series for three days in a row to earn the Dominator GTT (Muscle) as a prize. The LS Car Meet’s Test Track is the perfect place to try out your latest tune-ups, as well as the Pfister Neon (Sports, 30% off), Übermacht Cypher (Sports), and Karin Previon (Coupe) sitting nearby.

Only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S

Premium Test Ride: Übermacht Sentinel XS (Coupe)

HSW Time Trial: East Vinewood — Vespucci Beach

3X GTA$ and RP on Community Series

Check out some of the most original and inventive Jobs made using GTA Online’s Creator by members of the community, including a rollercoaster inspired Stunt Race, a vehicle Deathmatch for the Weaponized Tampa, and a chaotic football-inspired Capture mode. Earn Triple Rewards in the Community Series, and take a look at the full list of new Jobs below:

Steele Rollercoaster by Rick-420

A Stunt Race that simulates the thrills and spills of a high-speed roller coaster ride on a citywide scale.

THE RED ROOM by SevensSecret

This racetrack from prolific Job Creator SevensSecret is a love letter to the crimson hue. Beat out your foes to leave them seeing red.

DRT Big Fish Canal by Dirtrash

Weave your way through the Vespucci Canals in this creative high-speed circuit Race. Creator Dirtrash even partially submerged blimps in the canals, their fins poking above the surface of the water like oversized fish.

{Dog} Vehicle deathmatch by Underdogwalker

Shoot it out or climb behind the wheel in this intense Deathmatch set inside a custom-built soccer arena.

GTA Football by Chill_FX

If you’re in the mood for a more traditional football experience, though, protect your goal and score on your opponents at all costs in this custom Capture mode. No referees, no fouls, no cards, no rules.

DM Maze by Karnanake

Mind your corners as you navigate the labyrinth in this high-pressure Deathmatch at close quarters.

Black And Yellow by EggsAndJam

There are several viable strategies in this Deathmatch: Using the map’s verticality to find a perch; swimming underwater to flank your foes; using cover to spring surprise attacks.
