Overview

I firmly believe that the more you wait for a video game, there’s more chance for it to be complete junk. I’ve seen that happen with Duke Nukem Forever, Star Citizen, and who knows what will happen with Beyond Good and Evil 2 – assuming it ever releases. Sometimes I just give up on hyping myself up, stop following the news, and be pleasantly surprised once I remember that something from “development hell” is finally out. Now, Diablo IV was far from ever being in development hell but we have been drip-fed over the years in the form of short trailers, artwork, and vague updates. And just like that, it’s finally out!

Story

Diablo IV takes place fifty years after the events of Diablo III. You play as The Wanderer, a little nobody caught in the war between Heaven and Hell. After being drugged by villagers corrupted by Lilith and fed petals of her blood, The Wanderer forms an unlikely connection with Lilith. But way before taking her on, we have to delve deeper into the dungeons all over Sanctuary and discover hidden areas with plenty of optional content. As we try to grapple with the power vacuum left after the defeat of antagonists from the previous game, we’re also caught in the fierce war between Lilith and Inarius, a fallen angel.

Gameplay

Despite the complexity that shows its face later in the game, Diablo IV is surprisingly easy to get into. At least combat-wise. The story might give you a slight headache if you haven’t been playing the previous entries in the series, but good old hack n slash is something you can always rely on.

As expected, at the start of the game you are considerably limited in how you dispatch the creatures of Hell. I played as a sorceress so in the first hour I had a measly staff in my inventory and some basic armor. As you level up, more and more skills are introduced but at the same time, the world of Diablo IV is carefully balanced as you go through the story and complete side quests. There is always a slight challenge as you play reminding you that you’re merely a cog in the machine, helplessly caught between the war of Heaven and Hell.

Visuals

Compared to the previous entry (and the fact that more than a decade has passed in between) the graphics received a significant upgrade. You won’t see much of it at the start, though. The game has a strange habit of hanging too much around the initial area of Kyovashad, where all the colors seem washed out and monochromatic. I get it, it’s supposed to portray the hopelessness of its denizens and the absolute despair of the Sanctuary but it ended up being a real slog to push through. However, past Act 2 you’ll see what the game engine of Diablo IV can really achieve. It is at the same time that you’ll be able to get your hands on better-looking armor sets and make your reputation out of little nobody to a Wanderer that brings fear into the (nonexistent) hearts of mobs.

Audio

I’m rarely a person that will hype myself up, even for some games that I’ve been waiting for quite some time. However, when it came to the soundtrack and sound design, I knew that Blizzard cannot disappoint. It is a mere joy exploring the outskirts of Kyovashad and around Yelesna as gloomy gothic notes follow you wherever you go. Some of the boss fights have such memorable themes that I was seriously considering dying once or twice to Astaroth just so I could hear his theme again. I died more than a dozen times though, but that was merely due to my incompetence.

Overall

If there was one game that could be described as “worth the wait”, it’s definitely this one. As expected from today’s gaming climate, the game also comes with a shop and microtransactions but none of it is aggressively thrown in your face. You can have enough armor sets, weapons, and whatnot to experiment with – without spending a dime on visual gimmicks. What I didn’t like is how the story of Act 3 seems really drawn out and artificially prolonged, like a season of some Netflix show that has enough content for 6 episodes, yet they somehow watered it down to 12. It is a game where you won’t find yourself saying “Just one more hour and I’m done” but more like “Just one more day and I’ll consider a break to finally eat something”.

Giving a hint of what’s to come gameplay-wise, two expansions will feature brand new missions, weapons and skills, and areas to explore. Haus will be the first expansion. How does a billionaire prepare for the zompocalypse? A techno-death cult with a healthy splash of debauchery and gore! Haus is slated for a Q4 2023 release.

The second expansion will welcome players to the SOLA festival, where LA’s party people can greenwash their way to ecstasy and save the planet, one rave at a time. So L.A! SOLA Festival, will launch in Q2 2024. Haus and SOLA Festival are included in the Expansion Pass and will be available to buy separately.

From today, players will be able to access the new Cosplay feature. This is unlocked during the Call The Cavalry quest, after which players can select cosplay via the main menu or by visiting any storage locker in the game. Cosplay houses a brand new collection of character skins to customise slayers:

  • Premium Character Packs: these include a unique skin for the slayer named in the pack and a weapon that can be used by any of the slayers, from the HELL-A Catwalk Collection. There are a total of 6 character packs, all available to purchase from digital stores today:

    • Four further character packs – Gaelic Queen Dani (included for owners of the Expansion Pass), Jungle Fantasy Ryan, Steel Horse Carla and Venice Vogue Bruno – are also available to further enhance your Slayer’s stylish look.
  • ‘Til Dawn’ Collection: features a brand new skin for each of the 6 slayers, free for all players. These will automatically appear in the cosplay section after the latest game update, once players reach the unlock point.

In addition, players will be able to get ‘From Dusk’ Collection skins through Prime Gaming Rewards (for Amazon Prime members) throughout 2023. From Dusk Dani is first and available from June 15th-July 17th. It includes the Legless FOMOrian skin which can be selected when playing as Dani, and the FOMOrian Claws, which can be used with any of the six slayers. GTA Online: San Andreas Mercenaries Now Available

GTA Online: San Andreas Mercenaries Now Available

Team up with some of Los Santos’ most daring guns-for-hire and take back the city in GTA Online: San Andreas Mercenaries. Lead the fight against Merryweather Security’s forces as one of the Los Santos Angels and engage in explosive guerilla operations while conducting high-stakes, high-flying raids all across the state.

Charlie Reed’s got an impressive résumé — beyond his work as an aircraft mechanic in the Hangar, he’s an ex-military operator with significant experience assisting in various Heists around Los Santos over the years. He’s also been working on a plan called Project Overthrow — a multipronged attack on Merryweather Security to knock them well and truly off their perch.

The way Charlie sees it, Merryweather have amassed enough defense contracts, illegal R&D, and good old-fashioned criminal rackets that ripping them off in a series of high-flying schemes is a win-win scenario for him and your smuggling operation. Project Overthrow features six new missions for 1–4 players that will put your mercenary skills to the ultimate test: conducting reconnaissance, recovering valuable equipment, performing audacious rescues, and fighting your way through the teeth of Merryweather’s well-oiled war machine.

Project Overthrow is launched from the new Operations Terminal upgrade for the Mammoth Avenger, available at Warstock Cache & Carry.

Also initiated from the new Operations Terminal, the Los Santos Angels can take on three private contracts in daring Los Santos Angels Operations. Each of these presents an opportunity to acquire an Outfit for first-time completion and rotate through optional bonus objectives with each replay for an additional pay bump.

These include jumping out of a chopper and onto the deck of an aircraft carrier under cover of darkness, calling in a bombing run, and using an EMP blast to knock out a government installation. LSA Operations can also be launched by calling Charlie directly from your iFruit after your Operations Terminal has been installed.

It’s a new day for smuggling operations, as Hangar properties are being upgraded to host a suite of new abilities and features. A fully equipped Hangar can now store and customize the Avenger, as well as upgrade your personal arsenal with an Mk II Weapons Workshop.

Charlie’s ex-military associates have also taken to hanging out around the Hangar: Ask dishonorably discharged helicopter pilot and recent Los Santos Angels recruit Rooster McCraw to source cargo for a small fee.

You’ll also find free Snacks and Weapon pickups around the property to help you prepare for any fight ahead, and those looking to sharpen their skills at Flight School will find a convenient access point added inside the Hangar.

Four new Source Missions have been added to the Free Trade Shipping Co. on the Hangar laptop alongside three new Sell Missions — all for smugglers who prefer the driver’s seat to the cockpit. Perform deep sea dives, oust private militaries, and more in this expansive update to the Air Freight Cargo business by choosing the Land option when launching.

New Avenger Upgrades

The utility of the Mammoth Avenger has expanded in a big way. Owning a Facility (or Hangar) is no longer required to own and operate an Avenger, which can be called out to your location via the Services section of the Interaction Menu. Those who do own a Hangar with a Workshop will be able to customize their sky fortress with new mil-spec upgrades, including front-facing machine guns and missiles, as well as a Stealth Module or a Missile Lock-On Jammer that can be activated while on autopilot.

The Operations Terminal is an interior upgrade that unlocks access to Project Overthrow and the Los Santos Angels Operations detailed above. This can be purchased directly from Charlie in the Hangar, or when customizing your Avenger in the Charlie Upgrades menu. If you’re down to join the fight but don’t yet own a Hangar, the Operations Terminal can be purchased when upgrading the Avenger on the Warstock Cache & Carry website.

Another exciting new upgrade available for the Avenger is the Mammoth Avenger Thruster. If you’ve left your mobile sky base on Autopilot high above the city but you’re stranded on the ground, simply call the Mammoth Avenger Thruster directly to your location using the Interaction Menu. When nearing the rear cargo bay of the Avenger, hit D-pad right to dock inside.

Grotti Itali GTO Stinger TT

The Grotti Itali GTO Stinger TT (Sports) comes equipped with an illustrious pedigree, built on a bedrock of exotic cool and decades of Italian innovation — it’s the next generation of imported luxury, and it’s available now from Legendary Motorsport and the Luxury Autos showroom.

Bring your Grotti Itali GTO Stinger TT up to code by visiting Imani in the Agency Vehicle Workshop and outfitting it with Armor Plating, Slick Mines, Remote Control Unit, and a Missile Lock-On Jammer.

Maibatsu MonstroCiti

The Maibatsu MonstroCiti’s (Off-Road) reputation already precedes it by several thousand miles. It’s a family-friendly SUV that leads a double life as a sporty competitor capable of summiting any and all terrain in its path. It was a cult classic in Japan for years, and now it’s destined to find its way into the hearts of local drivers in no time flat.

Pick up a Maibatsu MonstroCiti from Southern San Andreas Super Autos or at the Luxury Autos showroom and equip it with Imani Tech upgrades like the Remote Control Unit and a Missile Lock-On Jammer.

More New Vehicles

Additional new vehicles have been added with today’s update, ranging from the boxy off-road brawn of the Declasse Walton L35 and Vapid Ratel, to the stealth capable F-160 Raiju fighter jet, Mammoth Streamer216 propeller plane, and more.

And coming next week, look forward to the next generation of the Bravado Buffalo as the EVX hits showroom floors. Plus, all limited-time vehicles from Los Santos Drug Wars — the Weeny Issi Rally, Toundra Panthere, Karin Hotring Everon, and Willard Eudora — have now been added for general sale.

Meanwhile, many lesser-used vehicles have been removed from dealership websites to streamline the shopping experience … these will occasionally be made available in other ways, including at The Diamond Casino & Resort’s Lucky Wheel.

New Weapon: Tactical SMG

The new Tactical SMG is the pinnacle of sidearm technology: fully automatic, oversized magazine, drive-by capable, and devastatingly powerful. Pick one up from the Gun Van and feel the weight of the future in the palm of your hand.

And More…

This update also brings rebalances to the in-game economy, experiential upgrades based on extensive player feedback, expansive updates to the Creator, and the new Career tab in the Pause menu on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S used for charting your progress through GTA Online’s multitude of criminal pursuits. See the full title update notes to learn more.

Later this summer, keep an eye out for new vehicles and dynamic events unfolding in Freemode with the return of Armored Van robberies. Plus, take part in a large-scale battle on Cayo Perico in just a few short weeks.

GTA+

Join GTA+ and celebrate the launch of The Vinewood Club — offering premium services to the high rollers of Los Santos. Members can enjoy the following benefits through July 19:

  • New Maibatsu MonstroCiti Off-Road Vehicle
  • New Avenger Operations Terminal
  • Cream Pearl and Blue-Green Flip Chameleon Wheel Paints
  • 1.5X GTA$ and RP on Project Overthrow Missions
  • 40% off the Mammoth Thruster docking station, Front Machine Guns, and Missiles Upgrades for the Avenger

The new videos showcase a never-before-seen boss, companion characters, battle techniques, and more.

As the final heir to the last-standing demon hunters family, college freshman Faye finds more than she bargained for from her school experience. While most students are bogged down with assigned reading, she finds herself whisked away on supernatural investigations. Could these hellspawned creatures be the ones from her family’s lore?

As seen in the Guerrilla Collective Showcase, a sentient stack of CRT TVs interrupts her study sessions, electrifying the battlefield with a retro flair. This villian forecasts static discharge strikes and a 100% chance of television precipitation! The next demon on the docket, first shown during IGN Summer of Gaming, unleashes a bouquet of barbed tongues on a circular battlefield. Shake up a new strategy to defeat this ghoul before it swallows the world!

Survive a whole semester by strategizing study sessions, building up classmates skill sets, and setting schedules to fit combat training, side quests, and school activities. Blossom friendships and relationships with 15 characters to choose from. Revealed in this week’s showcases are two more champions: Ti, a professional powerlifter whose special attack knocks back enemies in all directions, and Kestrel, a fitting rival for Faye who passes through enemies and strikes their pressure points.

Enter a purgatory where 2D and 3D art collide in battles with armies of macabre beings. With grotesque visuals summoned from Japanese manga and Italian horror cinema of the 60s and 70s, paired with structure and color pigment of JRPG favorites like Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, a semester at university couldn’t get creepier.

“The message of working together to triumph against all odds shines through in Demonschool’s relationships.” said Brandon Sheffield, creative director of Necrosoft Games. “Of course, we couldn’t make it easy, now could we? Demonic televisions and terrible-tongued beasts are just perfect to mix it up and strengthen Faye’s friendships.”

Demonschool opens enrollment on PlayStation 5|4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, and Steam Deck later in 2023.

Genre-Bending Action RPG Everhood 2 Revealed

Carl Jung, Joan of Arc, Rasputin, and more board the Existential Soul Train

STOCKHOLM – June 13, 2023 – Everhood 2, the Unconventional Action RPG (UARPG) sequel to one of 2021’s best-reviewed indie games by developer Foreign Gnomes, revealed its true technicolor self at IGN’s Summer of Gaming. Everhood 2 will explore alternate realities on PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch in early 2025.

After awakening in the space between reality, a lost Soul finds themself at the center of a cosmic conflict. Recruited by a Raven who promises to return their voice, the Soul must enter interdimensional doors in hopes of gaining enough power to slay the fearsome Mind Dragon. Travel to strange worlds, meet peculiar characters, and engage in a refined, expanded battle system on an unforgettable journey of existential proportions challenging gaming conventions.

Grab a pair of Moon Blades (among other upgradeable weapons!) and groove to the action-based rhythm of an epic salsa through time and space. Dodge melodic onslaughts, absorb elemental attacks, and strike back by releasing stored energy to hit each enemy’s weakness. Fight to an expansive soundtrack of Electronic Psychedelic Power Rock tunes specially written for each musical encounter against Carrot Mages, time cops, interdimensional mutants, and just…so much more.

Earn experience from defeated foes, scour environments for weapon upgrade tokens, and seek out powerful new weapons while preparing for the trials awaiting the Soul. The Mind Dragon threatens to overtake time and space, with the potential to erase entire realities from existence. Master a dynamic battle system that requires timing and careful movement before facing off against the Mind Dragon and other strange beings lurking just beyond perception.

Hang out with a humorous cast of colorful characters in a mysterious neon-dark world and explore different dimensions to confront the inevitable end of time. Follow the advice of Raven, the Soul’s veritable spiritual spotter, to worlds like the wartorn Vegetable Kingdom and an omniscient being’s pocket dimension. Seek meaning in a narrative mambo of madness while chatting with Carl Jung, squaring off against Rasputin, and diving into philosophical discussions with Terrance McKenna as wayward souls search for absolute truths.

“Releasing Everhood in 2021 changed our lives, and we’re preparing to share a bigger and stranger world with everyone,” said Chris Nordgren, co-founder of Foreign Gnomes. “We’re aiming to make a super-polished experience for newcomers, but for fans of the original…we’ve got plenty of mysteries for you to uncover.”

Everhood 2 will be available on PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch in early 2025 with English, French, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), and Japanese language support.
