Lazy Marmot Games brings the legendary board game to PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam, with a release planned for Q1 2027
Vienna, Austria. – October 29, 2026 – Lazy Marmot Games is thrilled to announce Sekigahara, an official digital adaptation of Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan, the celebrated 2-player historical block wargame designed by Matt Calkins and published by GMT Games.
Originally praised for its elegant rules, accessible mechanics, and deep historical tension, Sekigahara challenges players to take command of one of two major factions vying for control of a fractured 16th-century Japan. Its signature loyalty system mirrors the shifting allegiances that characterized the historical campaign, requiring matching clan cards to deploy troops and introducing dramatic betrayal mechanics via loyalty challenge cards. By eliminating dice and hiding block identities, the game replaces random chance with tactical uncertainty, rewarding strategic positioning, meticulous planning, and skillful bluffing.
The digital adaptation faithfully preserves the core tension and card-driven gameplay of the original game while introducing modern digital enhancements designed to streamline the experience and boost replayability. These include, among others:
- Scenario editor: allows players to create and share their own scenarios, from minor setup modifications to constructing mid/late-game scenarios and ahistorical what-if situations.
- Configurable AI: features a unique AI personality system that allows players to fine-tune opponent playstyles – including settings for aggressiveness, risk tolerance, resource control valuation, preferred stack sizes and others. This creates greater variety in AI matches and gives players a way to test their skills against different strategies and opponent styles.
- Game variants: options to tailor rules and setup to player preferences.
- Replay mode: helps to analyse completed games by providing quick turn summaries and showing all movements and combats at a glance.
- Quality-of-Life features: movement planning tools and combat impact hints to aid both newcomers and veterans.
“Our goal was to capture the brilliant strategic depth that made Sekigahara a tabletop classic while making it even more accessible and fun to play”, said Przemek Szalaj, Founder and Lead Developer at Lazy Marmot Games. “We’ve put a lot of thought into improving user experience and replayability, as well as into building strong and customizable AI.”
Sekigahara is slated for release on PC, Mac, and Linux in Q1 2027 on Steam. It will feature single player and cross-platform online multiplayer modes.
