In The Alters, you play as Jan Dolski, a simple worker attempting to outrun a deadly sunrise in a massive rolling base on a deadly planet. To survive, Jan extracts the quantum element Rapidium to forge “Alters” – cloned versions of himself rooted in the life choices he never made.
Along with the complete base game and 4 Deluxe Outfits, The Alters Complete Edition comes fully integrated with the new story expansion, Last Variable. This major story DLC focuses on the Jan Scientist alter, who can finally pursue his true calling (outside of just survival) – research.
The Variable Left Behind
Following the base campaign’s split ending where Jan Scientist stays behind on the hostile planet, The Last Variable expansion adds roughly 20 hours of story content centered around managing a static underground base and specialized scientist clones. Together, your team works to unlock a mysterious surface ecosystem called the Oasis, weathering 13-year heat phases via cryosleep while surface-bound Alters age and endure harsh environmental threats. But will they change once faced with the vulnerability of ageing?
