Ryo Hazuki RETURNS in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing

They said we’d never do it – but we did… Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing will feature

Ryo Hazuki

Ryo Hazuki, star of the Shenmue series returns in his first playable appearance since Shenmue 2 to join the ranks of the SEGA All-Stars as part of Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing.

Ryo, protagonist of the Shenmue series and one of the most requested SEGA characters to make an appearance in All-Stars Racing, will be riding his borrowed motorcycle around classic SEGA themed race tracks. And when a motorcycle just can’t cut it, Ryo unleashes his All-Star move and is able to swap vehicles to his iconic forklift truck to charge and barge opponents out of the way!

The Shenmue series, the story of a son’s quest for vengeance, began life in 1999 as the killer-app for the SEGA Dreamcast.  Originally developed by the legendary Yu Suzuki for SEGA, Ryo has yet to gain his revenge but he’s certainly no stranger to motorcycle racing and is sure to make a formidable adversary for Sonic, AiAi, Dr. Eggman and the other All-Stars.

Check out RYO in action in the video below

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jILxmTzZd5Q&feature=player_embedded]

I for one cannot wait to get my hands on this and play as RYO check out the details below on when the game will be coming out and on what platform.

More information about the game

In a frantic battle to the chequered flag, Sonic and friends speed around tracks set in mediaeval castle ramparts, lush rainforests and bustling cities, all taken from the visually rich and varied universes of Sonic and SEGA. Fan favourites such as Dr. Eggman, Tails, AiAi, Amigo and many more will join Sonic in their custom built vehicles, revving their engines and jostling to stay ahead of the pack. Each character will speed around the track in cars, planes, motorbikes, and in Aiai’s case – a banana mobile! Secret short cuts, swift handling and avoiding strategically placed obstacles are certainly the best way to get to the top of the podium…

But winning is only part of the fun in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing! Each character has a specific All Star move – such as Super Sonic, Banana Blitz and Tails Tornado – that allows a quick way for competitors to get back into the race! Power ups and weapons can also be collected around the tracks and used against the opposition to ensure they don’t become a threat to that number one position.
Battle it out in single or multiplayer mode, allowing up to four friends to race in frantic split-screen action, or up to eight players to compete online in the ultimate racing showdown.

Can Amigo scramble Dr. Eggman? Will AiAi say bye-bye to Tails? Are you gonna be faster than Sonic? The race will start in 2010…

Dark Void Interview with Senior Producer at Capcom – Morgan Gray

Capsule Computers recently interviewed Morgan Gray, Senior Producer at Capcom Entertainment Inc. the creators of the highly anticipated BLOCKBUSTER of 2010.  DARK VOID which will be available on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Games for Windows. Dark Void is one of the most creative, action packed and visually stunning games we have ever seen.  2009 could not come any quicker.  Especially after playing the demo at this years Tokyo Game Show.

Dark Void has everything you could imagine all jam packed into one superb 3rd person action / adventure game.

Check out the interview with Morgan and further down all links to the official website and community site where you could register to win some extremely cook prizes.

Enjoy the interview

Capsuple Computers Question 1 : What is your role at Capcom Entertainment / Airtight Games

Morgan : I am Morgan Gray, a Senior Producer at Capcom Entertainment Inc.

Capsule Computers Question 2 : Dark Void is being developed by Airtight Games, how long has Dark Void been in development ? And how many dedicated men and women are currently working on Dark Void.

Morgan : Dark Void has been in development, in its current incarnation, for about 2 – 2 ½ years. The Airtight development team was around 55 dedicated men and women, with an additional 50 others split across different outsourced art, music, marketing, etc.

It takes a village to make a game

Capsule Computers Question 3 : What do you believe have been your greatest challenges designing a game like Dark Void ?

Morgan : The biggest challenge making Dark Void is that there really isn’t a game that has done what we are doing before in terms of our mix of gameplay styles. There is no historic road map.  What makes us unique is our mix of on foot, jet pack dog fighting, and vertical combat, all happening at the same time, generally based on player tactical choice. These created many unique level design challenges that pushed the development team to grow and learn.

Capsule Computers Question 4 : Can you briefly describe what style of game Dark Void is ? And what players can expect in terms of  game play.

Morgan : Hmm, I believe , at its basic level, Dark Void is a third person action/adventure game with a strong emphasis on cover based combat and in air dog fighting. That is a pretty vanilla way to describe the game experience however. Where the game truly shines is in mixing these elements into levels that leave it up to the player to pick and choose their tactics. No other game has given the experience of being hunkered down behind cover, and then suddenly taking off into the air, to bring death from above on your enemies. It’s a very liberating take on third person shooters.

Capsule Computers Question 5 : Dark Void has been labeled as a groundbreaking combination of fast-paced vertical combat mixed with mid air and on foot action.  What games in the past have influenced the creation of Dark Void and what have you learnt from them to make Dark Void its own.

Morgan : I would imagine that most game developers are influenced by every game they have ever played in some way. But to be specific, here are a few notable games : Gears of War, Crimson Skies, The Rocketeer, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Tribes, Half-Life (1/2), Shadows of the Colossus, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, Rainbow Six, Megaman….

Just to name a few

Each has either taught valuable lessons about cover based combat, enemy design, air combat, pacing, unique enemies and visuals, etc.

Capsule Computers Question 6 : Where in the world/universe will most of action in Dark Void take place ? Who are the main threats in the game ? and why ?

Morgan : Dark Void focuses on an alien dimension known as The Void. It is the temporary home of a group of aliens called The Watchers, an evil enslaving race of beings banished from earth long ago. There they subjugate the ragtag group of humans that either had the misfortune of being born there, or like our hero Will, stumbled upon a gateway to The Void. Will, our hero, must work with the humans to find a way to escape back to our planet. The watchers obviously are less than pleased about this, especially since they are at the brink of hatching their own designs on returning to our world…

Capsule Computers Question 7 : Who’s idea was it to introduce and use a Jet Pack into Dark Void,  and what sort of research did your team do to make flying through the air on your own private jet a realistic as possible.

Morgan : The Airtight team wanted to have a flight focus in the game, but really wanted to do something other than planes. The jetpack was a no-brainer from that point on. We went back to all the famous jetpack heroes of the past, Commander Cody, The Rocketeer, Boba Fett, etc. As well as any game that used anything even remotely close to a jetpack. Airtight has such a strong flight background that they were able to bring their experience to bear on making sure things felt perfect in the air.

Capsule Computers Question 8 : Is Dark Void a single player only experience ?  Will there be any co-op campaign style mode or online multiplayer game play ?

Morgan : Not at all. Multiplayer should never just be tacked on to something to have it. We knew we had a lot of challenges ahead of us working on the brand new mix of gameplay experiences that Dark Void features, not to mention making a whole new IP,  Airtight making its first game as a company (although the crew is all very experienced). We did not want to make the game suffer, worst case we concerned about impacting the single player experience, and potentially not having time to make sure the multiplayer experience could stand on its own (games like Halo and CoD Modern Combat have set a new bar on what’s required to have something deep and fun beyond simple deathmatch). So we made the call to focus on getting the new IP off the ground with an awesome single player experience. If we have the chance to make a sequel, we’ll have the discussions all over again on what to focus on .

Capsule Computers Question 9 : Are you able to give us a sneak peak at any of the Xbox 360 Achievements  / Playstation 3 Trophies that players can look forward to obtaining.

Morgan : We have a good mix of progress based achievements/trophies  (level by level), and challenge based. I don’t want to spoil the fun of discovery, but here are a couple of cool ones

Float like a Butterfly – Escape from 10 melee attacks

Rocket Clothesline – Melee an enemy immediately after landing

Capsule Computers Question 10 : What will players be able to expect from Capcom/Airtight Games moving forward.  Are there already plans to develop Dark Void 2 or do you have anything else lined up ?

Morgan : Well, all our focus is on finishing up Dark Void…but…that’s not to say that we don’t have designs on where the story can go from here…I guess the phrase would be…the sky’s the limit!

-===-

Capsule Computers would once again like to thank Morgan for his time in answering these questions for all the fans of Dark Void.

Sniper Vs. Sniper Online Preview with Peter Huh in Tokyo

I was very fortunate to meet with Com2us Producer of Sniper Vs. Sniper on the Apple iPhone/iTouch, Peter Huh in Tokyo for Tokyo Game Show 2009.

Peter explained the development cycle of Sniper Vs. Sniper.  What’s new and how it all works along with some cool tips on making you the best sharp shooter in the game. After reviewing the game, it is clear that Com2uS has made the best online Sniper game for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Initially Sniper Vs. Sniper was a relatively small project with only a 3-4 month time limit.  Development started in March of 2009 and by June it was ready for beta testing.  The first build of Sniper Vs. Sniper only had two modes :  1v1 single player and 1v1 multiplayer.  The testers beta testing wanted more.

From hearing the feedback, Sniper Vs. Sniper went back into development and everything started all over again from scratch.  New modes were added such as :

Single Player Campaign : Consisting of 6 beautifully designed maps where players attempt to take out AI controller snipers and following a storyline plot.  As players progress and pass missions they are also able to take part in the Special Missions.

Special Missions : Consist of a number of objective based missions within each of the 6 high quality maps/levels of the game. For example, a simple objective in one level would be to shoot all 20 flower pots within a specific time limit.  Completing all the missions within a specific level will open up an upgrade that you can use to your advantage in multiplayer or in single player.  Such upgrades / perks are better scope for greater visibility and stronger bullets for more damage. I won’t ruin the surprise on the other upgrades, so you will need to find them out for yourself.   Special Missions is a great addition to Sniper Vs. Sniper and it has the feel of a mini-achievement style / mini-game type of mode.

Online Multiplayer  1v1 : This is where the real fun takes place.   The online multiplayer 1v1 mode is where you can pit yourself against the world’s best snipers.  There is a ranking system and also a “Call Of Duty” style Medal system that players strive to achieve.  Players can challenge one another by simply sending each other requests.  Once both parties accept they are thrown into the action and .. well you know what happens next 😉  1v1 online mode also has a chat room style lobby where players from across the globe can chat and challenge one another from there as well.   It’s also a great place to sit back and exchange tips and tactics and strategies as well.

Alliance Attack : This mode is really cool  this as the name of the mode states, has you team up with a human controlled partner against AI controlled opponents online.  This is a really fun and a casual type of online experience where you can enjoy working as a team to get the job done.  World rankings are not calculated in Alliance attack so you can enjoy a casual online experience without the stress and pressure of dropping ranks.  This is recommended to anyone starting up playing online to get an understanding on how the game plays in multiplayer mode.

Peter advised that his favourite level / map is Building and City .. so if you happen to play against him on those BE AWARE 😉 he knows the levels like the back of his hand.  The Temple level is possibly the most beautifully designed map inspirations taken from the Ankor Wat temples in Cambodia.  And the 360 degree panorama views available from the forest map/level are truly amazing.

In terms of difficulty Peter suggests you go through the Campaign mode first to get a good understanding of the game and its mechanics, once you’ve completed the game try your hand at the 1v1 and alliance modes online.  Then once you’re a true sharpshooter take on the challenge of the special missions to gain yourself the extra perks and abilities that will most certainly be very useful online. After you feel like you’ve mastered the game, try your hand against the producer of the game, codename Crazylife.

Development of Sniper Vs. Sniper went from June to September including a public beta which was very successful and accepted by the testers.  Sniper Vs. Sniper has since been sent to Apple for approval and should be available in the App Store around the 8th of October.
