Overview

Before being called up to review Boyz n the Hood, I had never heard of it nor knew of its prominence. I’m a fan of television dramas such as The Wire and the recently released Luke Cage which both deal with life as working class/underclass African-Americans but somehow missed hearing about this film which was written and directed by John Singleton. In consideration for the recent political and social upheaval in the United States today, thanks in part due to movements such as ‘Black Lives Matter’ raising awareness of police injustice against African American citizens, a classic such as this deserves to be screened once more in a theatre. Not just as a celebration of its craftsmanship or its status as a cult film, but as a reminder of how little things had changed in regards to the lives of African Americans living in the United States in over two decades. I walked down to George St cinemas to watch the In the House screening.

The MCs for the evening were David ‘Quinny’ Quinn and Jason ‘Jabba’ Davis who started off the evening by having a quick game of ‘heads or tails’ with the entire audience. After a couple of rounds, the lucky winner walked away with tickets to go jetboating Darling Harbour. An unusual, but welcome, addition became introduced when Quinny and Jabba sat down to talk about the film. One of the audience members on the night was (I believe) a former journalist who was in the United States during the events of the Rodney King beating and the subsequent Los Angeles riots. He provided an interesting perspective on the themes and narrative elements of the film which I would not have otherwise experienced at a regular screening. An advantage I would not have experienced without the audience interaction which In the House facilitates.

Story

The film follows the life of protagonist Trey Styles (Cuba Gooding) from childhood to young adulthood as he grows up in South Central Los Angeles. Life in these rough and tumble neighbourhoods is far from ideal as we see Tre and his friends, Doughboy (Ice Cube), Ricky (Morris Chestnut), and Chris (Redge Green), as they navigate the dangers of living in this dangerous environment. Luckily, with the guidance and support of his father, Furious (Laurence Fishburne), Tre is able to grow up into a well-educated and conscientious young man. When tragedy strikes, however, Tre is forced to make a choice between the values that his father taught him and the values which he was exposed to while growing up in the hood.

boyz-n-the-hood-screenshot-05

I absolutely loved the script of this film. The narrative has all the hallmarks of a Classical Greek tragedy on the same level of Oedipus Rex. There is an overarching sense of inevitable doom which hangs over the heads of all the characters which evokes the destined downfalls of the protagonists of those classic stories. The dialogue itself was very naturalistic with characters engaging in the African-American street slang which I’ve gotten used to since my foray into The Wire. It grounds the characters and action in a sense of realism which heightens the emotional effect of the narrative. As characters talk about everything from women to sport to the gentrification of African-American neighbourhoods, it all feels like it has a greater purpose and an impact upon the wider plot. The personal drama we see in the hood becomes representative of the systemic inequality which African-Americans face.

The performances from the cast were strong throughout with a couple of actors standing out. Fishburne in particular does an amazing turn as Furious by giving him an intellectual gravitas which is still very much grounded in the reality of the street. Furious is equal parts street smart and politically astute as he gives Trey (and the audience) pearls of wisdom from his experience of growing up in the hood. Gooding also does a good turn in giving emotional depth to Trey as we seem him grapple with the conflicting facets of his personality. On the one hand, we see Trey as the ‘street’ side of his personality as he postures for his friends but we also see his vulnerability when he breaks down to his girlfriend. Both of these actors had the acting chops to create a strong onscreen presence which made for captivating cinema to watch.

Visuals

The visual style of director, John Singleton, is quite creative with his use of montage to create tension. The scene where the film’s penultimate tragedy unfolds in quick cuts between shots of the possible victims and their rescuers trying desperately to save them. The quick cuts followed by the slow motion as the anticipated event finally unfolds is a harrowing experience with tension ramping up to the sequence’s climax. It helps us to see these moments from multiple perspectives and give a sense of uncertainty which a more linear sequence would not have given.

boyz-n-the-hood-screenshot-02

Audio

The film’s score features an eclectic mix of jazz and more urban pieces. A lot of the diegetic music fits the tone of the misé-en-scene with the heavy use of Rhythmn and Blues, Rap, and Hip Hop. The films creates a soundscape for the street and the ‘hood’ by using these pieces as an audio cue for its audience as well as paying homage to the musical works which manifested in these environments. The rest of the score features a brooding jazz score to generally heighten the tension the audience feels as the story unfolds.

boyz-n-the-hood-screenshot-03

Overall

I very much enjoyed this film and was very glad to see it up on the big screen. The story may set itself in the poorer neighbourhoods of L.A., but its soul comes from the same tragic line as the works of Sophocles. The director’s visual style helps to reinforce the tension of the film’s narrative with montage. The film’s soundtrack similarly reinforces the tension and themes of the narrative through a mix of jazz and hip hop pieces. This film gives a confronting account of life in these marginalised, African-American communities but does so with great style and talent. This film is a masterclass on how politics and the cinematic art can come together to make a statement about the world we live in. It’s a film which I’ll definitely sing the praises of to my friends, and one that I have no problem recommending to anyone who wishes to watch drama which is a bit heavier. Kudos to the In the House for screening this film!

Sentai Filmworks Acquires the ‘Squid Girl’ Anime

Squid-Girl-06

Sentai Filmworks announced today that they have acquired the rights to the entire Squid Girl anime series. This includes seasons one and two and the OVAs. Sentai Filmworks’ license not only includes the right to distribute the series on home video, but also includes television broadcast rights as well. It has not been revealed if this means that the series will be broadcast on Adult Swim’s Toonami block.

Sentai Filmworks describes the series as follows:

The cutest little tentacle-haired invader from the sea, Squid Girl, has come to subdue humanity! Unfortunately, she’s in hot water with the Aizawa siblings after a demonstration of her squid powers destroys their restaurant, the Lemon Beach House. Now, she’s forced to work as a waitress for them until she pays off her damages. Between her aquatic puns, bickering with the Aizawa sisters, tiffs with customers, and the many misadventures that come with seaside life, Squid Girl has her hands, and her tentacles, full!

The original manga series was drawn by Masahiro Anbe. It was serialised in Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shounen Champion from 2007 to 2016. Tsutomu Mizushima directed the anime adaptation and Michiko Yokote handled the series composition. Mizushima and Yokote both worked on the original anime series Shirobako. Diomedea produced the animation for the series.

anno-2205-screenshot-12

The final piece of Anno 2205 DLC has launched. “Frontiers” introduces three new sectors. Madrigal Islands and Greentide Archipelago is a nod to the Anno franchise’s island roots. Both sectors are located on the temperate region. Man-Machine Synthetics are hidden away somewhere in the Madrigal Islands and the Greentide Archipelago. Savik Province is a continental type sector located in the Arctic region with geysers that can provide much needed heat for settlements. Additionally, “Frontiers” brings military conflicts to regular sectors to secure trade routes and a variety of cosmetic ornaments.

Anno 2205 “Frontiers” is available now via Uplay and other digital distributors. Ubisoft has opted to not make it part of the Season Pass and must be purchased separately for $11.99 USD.

Pokemon Sun & Moon Demo, Starter Evolutions & More

pokemon-sun-moon-promo-03

This is almost becoming routine but we once again have another huge information dump about Pokemon Sun & Moon and there are some really awesome features announced here as long as a demo with a decent reward for those who beat it. I’ll cover everything revealed in the latest video (which can be viewed in full at the bottom of this article) as well as any additional relevant information from the official website and other versions of the trailer.

pokemon-sun-moon-promo-01

First up we have our first look at each starters first evolutionary stage. Dartrix, Torracat and Brionne are the Grass, Fire and Water starters evolved form respectably and it doesn’t seem like any of their typing or ability has changed from their original forms.

pokemon-sun-moon-promo-02

New game modes up next. The big online initiative in this game is called Festival Plaza and is where trainers from all around the world gather to earn Festival Coins by completing missions. These missions seem to be created by players and can also be tackled in teams. There will also be global missions designed by the devs, with the first one revolving around catching lots of Pokemon. You can also battle and trade with other trainers you meet. Missions seen so far include a type match-up test and a mini game involving Tauros smashing through rocks.

pokemon-sun-moon-screenshot-01

Festival Coins can be spent on in all kinds of stores in Festival Plaza such as goody shops where you can get deals on items, bouncy houses for Pokémon to train in (which seems to be replacing Super Training from the previous game as the means of increasing your Pokemon’s EV’s outside of battle), and dye houses where you can dye your clothes new colors. You also have a Festival Rank which goes up based on the amount of coins you gather. This in turn gives you more things to do in Festival Plaza.

pokemon-sun-moon-screenshot-02

Now for the Poke Pelago, a mode that has been introduced to take advantage of all the Pokemon in your PC Boxes that you might never ever use. Basically what the Poke Pelago is a bunch of different islands that each have a different use, with more becoming available as you ‘develop them’. The first island is Isle Abeens and allows you to set beans down that will then attract wild Pokemon. If these Pokemon take a liking to you they may join your party instantly, seemingly without having to be captured.

The second island is Isle Aphun and will allow your Pokemon to search for rare items such as evolution stones. Speaking of evolution stones, a brand new ice stone has been introduced, most likely allowing you to evolve Alolan Vulpix and Alolan Sandshrew into their new Alolan forms. Another Island is Isle Evelup which allows your Pokemon to drink special drinks that increase certain EV’s or can even level a Pokemon up. The final revealed island is one where you can grow berries and cultivate them like in past games.

ash-greninja-pokemon-01

In fantastic news Pokemon Sun & Moon will be receiving a demo. Launching exactly one month before the game on October 18th, the demo is a self contained story not found in the main games that you play through using a Pokemon in a special Poke Ball provided by a certain someone. This Pokemon seems to be none other than a level 37 Greninja that has the new ability of Battle Bond, allowing it to transform into Ash-Greninja from the anime once it defeats a Pokemon in battle! Even better news, when the full game releases you will be able to transfer Ash-Greninja to it once you complete the demo. The demo is 400MB large requiring 3100 blocks to download.

Pokemon-X-Y-Mega-01

In a surprise I didn’t expect personally Mega Evolution will be making a full fledged return in Sun & Moon. The Mega system will work the same way it did in previous games but it seems you just use the Z-Ring to activate it this time around. It is not clear if a player will be able to Mega Evolve and use a Z-Move in the same battle.

Using Mega Evolution as a segway, the full rule set for the Video Game Championship 2017 format was also unveiled today with the main rules being:

  • Double Battle format is limited to Pokémon that appear in the Alola Region Pokédex (excluding some Legendary and Mythical Pokémon).
  • Use of Mega Stones is not allowed.
  • Only Pokémon that can be obtained in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon may be entered.
  • Each player now gets 10 minutes of their own time in VGC 2017 rule battles. Players have a maximum of 60 seconds per turn but if you run out of time you lose the battle automatically.

pokemon-world-championships-2017-promo-02

These changes are sure to bring a lot of fresh strategies and new competitors to the Video Game Championships. The individual time rule in particular is very interesting and seems to be a way to get battles to be faster paced and eliminate the concept of timer-stall.

In another positive change, this format will be available to play online all year round as opposed to past games where it become the special rule set every other month or so. Unfortunately this announcement also semi-confirmed triple battles and rotation battles will not be returning in Sun & Moon, making this the first time they are absent since Pokemon Black & White.

pokemon-sun-moon-promo-04

Speaking of online, the Global Link features for Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire will cease to function on November 1st. This is to give time to update the service for Pokemon Sun & Moon. Features such as GTS, Wonder Trade and Free Battle on Battle Spot will however remain accessible.

One of these great new features is the ability to scan a QR code which allows you to ‘rent’ a players team based on that QR code. You can take part in Link Battles and certain Rating Battles using a Battle Team you’ve rented and special teams may even become available such as former World Championships!

pokemon-sun-moon-screenshot-03

Battle boxes have also received a huge upgrade. In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, you can register Pokémon that you often use in Battle Teams which replace the Battle Box. You can set up a maximum of six Battle Teams, and the same Pokémon can be registered to several Battle Teams simultaneously. That means the Battle Team is more of a copy of a Pokemon rather than the actual Pokemon itself and the Battle Team will remain valid as long as you have that Pokemon somewhere in your PC.

Pokemon Sun & Moon is sure looking to be the most ambitious Pokemon title ever created. Our coverage is not over yet though with another trailer being scheduled for October 14th at 22:00 Japan time. You can check here soon after that for all the latest news and be sure to check out our extensive backlog of Pokemon Sun & Moon coverage if you’ve missed anything or need a refresher. The new games release on November 18th exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS.

New Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Intro and Great Ape Fight Videos Released

dragon-ball-xenoverse-2-trailer-screenshot-01

With the Closed Beta for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 happening this weekend, some people have managed to get an early look at the games intro scene which is more of an introduction to the world of the Time Patrollers as opposed to a traditional anime game opening filled with fantasy fight match ups and another rendition of the series opening theme Cha-La Head Cha-La. You’ve seen some of this before in past trailers but now you can check out the whole thing below.

The other video was officially released by Bandai Namco and features a tutorial battle against a Giant Ape Nappa. The videos main purpose seems to be showing off the new mechanics introduced into giant battles, including getting sent to the Mind Control World to fight an evil copy of yourself and reflecting a giant ki blast.

Lastly some new information has been discovered about how clothing stats will work in this game. Many players we’re dissapointed with how the first Xenoverse kind of limited your clothing options if you wanted to optimise certain stats of your characters. That will no longer be a problem in Xenoverse 2 as each character has an accessory slot for an item called a QQ Bang. A QQ Bang is an item which can be made up of a mix of chosen clothes and items. The higher quality these clothes and items are the higher quality your QQ Bang will be, leading to bigger stat boosts. It is confirmed that a QQ Bang has the potential to grant greater stats than even the best clothing sets.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 releases on the PS4, Xbox One and PC in America on the 25th of October and on the 28th for Europe and Australia. Bandai Namco was kind enough to provide us with a key to the closed beta this weekend so expect an impressions piece once I get some good playtime with the game.
