Word has been spreading around the internet about a supposed software hack that will allow you to play Xbox 360 games on your Xbox One console. A few people have been caught up only to find that the ‘hack’ is actually a hoax, and following the instructions will brick your Xbox One console.

The rumor originally started on the popular anonymous message board; 4chan, and has since spread like wildfire. A few media outlets have even reported on the hack as being legitimate, further spreading the potential damage it can cause. We have attached an image of the instructions that are currently circling the web, but seriously though, and I cannot stress this enough; do NOT follow these instructions. Following them will  IMMEDIATELY and IRREVERSIBLY brick your Xbox One, rendering it useless.

Seriously, don’t do this!

Microsoft’s Major Nelson who recently put up a video of some sweet Xbox One tips and tricks, also took to twitter to confirm that the “hack” is really a hoax and will damage your system:

So once again, please do NOT follow the instructions, no matter how convincing someone may be regarding their authenticity. We know how desperate many players are to play 360 games on the Xbox One, but the sad fact is we just can’t right now, so don’t buy into things like this. Hopefully Microsoft will release an update that removes user access to the developer menu so that nobody else will get caught up.
