While the original Kinect might not have had the best movement tracking performance around, it managed pretty well as far as audio commands were concerned. However just like the improvements to the Kinect’s camera, the microphone which is actually part of the base of the new Kinect has gone through a number of improvements.

As said on Channel 9, Ivan Tashev, a Microsoft researcher who was the principal software architect and key contributor behind the audio technology for the new Kinect, has explained that the Kinect’s microphone now has the ability to remove echo from voice communication and distinguish between various environmental sounds and the person speaking, allowing for improved voice recognition.
