The Straw Hat Jolly Roger!

The Straw Hat Jolly Roger!

I just love when big Anime or Manga series’ infiltrate our everyday life by producing their own types of everyday items that all of us, or most of us, use. Evangelion did it with Schick not too long ago and One Piece is a big contributor to this type of deal, they seem to have One Piece everything nowadays, from themed coolers to an entire restaurant recreated to look like Baratie. The latest collaboration deal is one that I am extremely excited to SEE because I happen to use these things all the time: Glasses.

Yes, glasses, more specifically they are glasses designed to reduce the strain on your eyes while using a computer which happens to fit in very well with the stereotypical lifestyle of an Anime and Manga fan of this generation. It is a collaboration between the One Piece franchise and the eyewear manufacturer JINS.  They were released just over a week ago on the 10th of August. The themed glasses are the fourth entry in the “One Piece Limited by JINS” collaborative series. The designs that have been released are that of the nine crew Straw Hat Crew Members which you can see down below in the gallery section.

In addition to the base model of the glasses you can also purchase six colour variations that are available only online. The models based on Luffy, Chopper, Robin and Brook are suited with high-contrast lenses which reduce the damage to the eye by HEV light by at least 50 percent, while the others reduce the same type of eye-damaging light by only 35 percent. The glasses are sold for 4,990 yen each, which adds up to about US$51, and for double that price the basic lenses can be swapped out for better lenses which are more suited to heavy computer usage.

Each pair of glasses comes with a character-specific, soft case. Orders purchased from the JINS web store come with a small “Gum-Gum Fruit” keychain whereas orders purchased from JINS Amazon or JINS Rakuten web stores come with a specific One Piece character keychain that corresponds to the style you chose. (E.g. Choosing the Franky pair will get you the Franky keychain.)If you’re more of a collector than a user you may be interested in the limited edition box set which includes all nine of the models, their keychains, the Gum-Gum Fruit keychain and an incredibly stylish fol-out box to host all of the glasses in. Box designs will vary between stores though and the set will go for 44,910 yen (US$460).
